Artificial intelligence optimized image segmentation techniques for renal cyst detection

The vast number of image modalities available nowadays has given rise and access to a number of medical images. These images perhaps suffer issues such as low contrast, noise, ill-defined boundaries and poor visualisation. Therefore, a need for effective segmentation arises. Medical image segmentation plays a significant role in identifying a disorder, treatment planning, routine follow ups and computer-guided surgery respectively. The paper presents automatic medical image segmentation to overcome the imaging concerns and demarcate each notch & boundary in an image. The proposed algorithm identifies the existing kidney cyst precisely as they may be related to extreme disorders that may affect kidney function. The algorithm has been further tested on automatic segmentation using Genetic Algorithm, Ant Colony Optimisation and Fuzzy C Means Clustering. In terms of visualisation of valuable pathology, GA stands out and further helps in better assessment of the extent of the disease providing with better representation of the kidney cysts thereby giving a better diagnostic assurance and understanding of the nature of any disorder helping the medical practitioners as well as the patients. Experimental results on segmentation of kidney CT images conclusively demonstrate that the Genetic Algorithm is much more effective and robust.

Emerging Applications of Bio-Inspired Algorithms in Image Segmentation

Image processing is one example of digital media. It consists of a set of operations to handle an image. Image segmentation is among its main important operations. It involves dividing the image into several parts or regions to extract vital information or identify relevant objects. Many techniques of artificial intelligence, including bio-inspired algorithms, have been used in this regard. This article collected the state-of-the-art studies presenting image-segmentation techniques combined with four bio-inspired algorithms including particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithms (GA), ant colony optimization (ACO), and artificial bee colonies (ABC). This research work aimed at showing the importance of image segmentation and its combination with these algorithms. This article provides insights on how these algorithms are adapted to image-segmentation combinatorial problems, which assist researchers to start the first hands-on application. It also discusses their setting parameters and the highly used algorithms such as PSO, GA, ACO, and ABC. The article presents new research directions in image segmentation based on bio-inspired algorithms.

Deep Learning Application in Plant Stress Imaging: A Review

Plant stress is one of major issues that cause significant economic loss for growers. The labor-intensive conventional methods for identifying the stressed plants constrain their applications. To address this issue, rapid methods are in urgent needs. Developments of advanced sensing and machine learning techniques trigger revolutions for precision agriculture based on deep learning and big data. In this paper, we reviewed the latest deep learning approaches pertinent to the image analysis of crop stress diagnosis. We compiled the current sensor tools and deep learning principles involved in plant stress phenotyping. In addition, we reviewed a variety of deep learning applications/functions with plant stress imaging, including classification, object detection, and segmentation, of which are closely intertwined. Furthermore, we summarized and discussed the current challenges and future development avenues in plant phenotyping.

A Survey on Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Brain Disorders through MRI Based on Machine Learning and Data Mining Methodologies with an Emphasis on Alzheimer Disease Diagnosis and the Contribution of the Multimodal Fusion

Computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems use machine learning methods that provide a synergistic effect between the neuroradiologist and the computer, enabling an efficient and rapid diagnosis of the patient’s condition. As part of the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is a major public health problem, the CAD system provides a neuropsychological assessment that helps mitigate its effects. The use of data fusion techniques by CAD systems has proven to be useful, they allow for the merging of information relating to the brain and its tissues from MRI, with that of other types of modalities. This multimodal fusion refines the quality of brain images by reducing redundancy and randomness, which contributes to improving the clinical reliability of the diagnosis compared to the use of a single modality. The purpose of this article is first to determine the main steps of the CAD system for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Then to bring together some research work related to the diagnosis of brain disorders, emphasizing AD. Thus the most used methods in the stages of classification and brain regions segmentation are described, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Secondly, on the basis of the raised problem, we propose a solution within the framework of multimodal fusion. In this context, based on quantitative measurement parameters, a performance study of multimodal CAD systems is proposed by comparing their effectiveness with those exploiting a single MRI modality. In this case, advances in information fusion techniques in medical imagery are accentuated, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. The contribution of multimodal fusion and the interest of hybrid models are finally addressed, as well as the main scientific assertions made, in the field of brain disease diagnosis.

An IoT Based Predictive Modelling for Predicting Lung Cancer Using Fuzzy Cluster Based Segmentation and Classification

In this paper, we propose a new Internet of Things (IoT) based predictive modelling by using fuzzy cluster based augmentation and classification for predicting the lung cancer disease through continuous monitoring and also to improve the healthcare by providing medical instructions. Here, the fuzzy clustering method is used and which is based on transition region extraction for effective image segmentation. Moreover, Fuzzy C-Means Clustering algorithm is used to categorize the transitional region features from the feature of lung cancer image. In this work, Otsu thresholding method is used for extracting the transition region from lung cancer image. Moreover, the right edge image and the morphological thinning operation are used for enhancing the performance of segmentation. In addition, the morphological cleaning and the image region filling operations are performed over an edge lung cancer image for getting the object regions. In addition, we also propose a new incremental classification algorithm which combines the existing Association Rule Mining (ARM), the standard Decision Tree (DT) with temporal features and the CNN. The experiments have been conducted by using the standard images that are collected from database and the current health data which are collected from patient through IoT devices. The results proved that the performance of the proposed prediction model which is able to achieve the better accuracy when it is compared with other existing prediction model.
