A Neural-Network-Based Watermarking Method Approximating JPEG Quantization

We propose a neural-network-based watermarking method that introduces the quantized activation function that approximates the quantization of JPEG compression. Many neural-network-based watermarking methods have been proposed. Conventional methods have acquired robustness against various attacks by introducing an attack simulation layer between the embedding network and the extraction network. The quantization process of JPEG compression is replaced by the noise addition process in the attack layer of conventional methods. In this paper, we propose a quantized activation function that can simulate the JPEG quantization standard as it is in order to improve the robustness against the JPEG compression. Our quantized activation function consists of several hyperbolic tangent functions and is applied as an activation function for neural networks. Our network was introduced in the attack layer of ReDMark proposed by Ahmadi et al. to compare it with their method. That is, the embedding and extraction networks had the same structure. We compared the usual JPEG compressed images and the images applying the quantized activation function. The results showed that a network with quantized activation functions can approximate JPEG compression with high accuracy. We also compared the bit error rate (BER) of estimated watermarks generated by our network with those generated by ReDMark. We found that our network was able to produce estimated watermarks with lower BERs than those of ReDMark. Therefore, our network outperformed the conventional method with respect to image quality and BER.

Robust 3D object watermarking scheme using shape features for copyright protection

This article utilizes the discrete wavelet transformation to introduce an advanced 3D object watermarking model depending on the characteristics of the object's vertices. The model entails two different phases: integration and extraction. In the integration phase, a novel technique is proposed, which embeds the secret grayscale image three times using both the encrypted pixels and the vertices' coefficients of the original 3D object. In the extraction phase, the secret image is randomly extracted and recaptured using the inverse phase of the integration technique. Four common 3D objects (Stanford bunny, horse, cat figurine, and angel), with different faces and different vertices, are used in this model as a dataset. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated using different metrics to show its superiority in terms of execution time and imperceptibility. The results demonstrated that the proposed method achieved high imperceptibility and transparency with low distortion. Moreover, the extracted secret grayscale image perfectly matched the original watermark with a structural similarity index of 1 for all testing models.

Feature ghost imaging for color identification

On the basis of computational ghost imaging (CGI), we present a new imaging technique, feature ghost imaging (FGI), which can convert the color information into distinguishable edge features in retrieved grayscale images. With the edge features extracted by different order operators, FGI can obtain the shape and the color information of objects simultaneously in a single-round detection using one single-pixel detector. The feature distinction of rainbow colors is presented in numerical simulations and the verification of FGI's practical performance is conducted in experiments. Furnishing a new perspective to the imaging of colored objects, our FGI extends the function and the application fields of traditional CGI while sustaining the simplicity of the experimental setup.

WatMIF: Multimodal Medical Image Fusion-Based Watermarking for Telehealth Applications

Over recent years, the volume of big data has drastically increased for medical applications. Such data are shared by cloud providers for storage and further processing. Medical images contain sensitive information, and these images are shared with healthcare workers, patients, and, in some scenarios, researchers for diagnostic and study purposes. However, the security of these images in the transfer process is extremely important, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper proposes a secure watermarking algorithm, termed WatMIF, based on multimodal medical image fusion. The proposed algorithm consists of three major parts: the encryption of the host media, the fusion of multimodal medical images, and the embedding and extraction of the fused mark. We encrypt the host media with a key-based encryption scheme. Then, a nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT)-based fusion scheme is employed to fuse the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan images to generate the fused mark image. Furthermore, the encrypted host media conceals the fused watermark using redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT) and randomised singular value decomposition (RSVD). Finally, denoising convolutional neural network (DnCNN) is used to improve the robustness of the WatMIF algorithm. The simulation experiments on two standard datasets were used to evaluate the algorithm in terms of invisibility, robustness, and security. When compared with the existing algorithms, the robustness is improved by 20.14%. Overall, the implementation of proposed watermarking for hiding fused marks and efficient encryption improved the identity verification, invisibility, robustness and security criteria in our WatMIF algorithm.
