Exploring Sex Differences and Force Level Effects on Grip Force Perception in Healthy Adults

This study aimed to explore the effect of sex and force level on grip force reproduction in healthy adults by conducting a force reproduction task. Participants (n = 28) were instructed to replicate a range of reference grip force levels (10-130 N in 10 N increments). We found that women (absolute error: 16.2 ± 8.7 N) replicated these force levels more accurately than men (absolute error: 23.1 ± 9.5 N) at higher force levels (90-130 N). Furthermore, the force reproductions were most accurate at the 30-50 N range for men and the 50-60 N range for women. These results may offer significant insights into the higher rates of musculoskeletal disorders among women, enabling researchers and clinicians to design novel interventions and tools that can improve grip force perception and reduce hand injury rates in both men and women.

Features of Index-Ring Finger Pair’s Force Contribution in Multi-Finger Force-Following Tasks

New types of cylindrical handles such as pushrims with force signal sensors under four fingers (excluding the thumb) enable real-time gripping-status assessment. The mirrored change phenomenon of the index and ring fingers observed in linear grip tasks offers a new perspective on finger grouping. To evaluate the force contribution of index-ring finger pair in multi-finger force, 10 right-handed male participants with similar hand sizes were recruited to participate in sinusoidal function force-following tasks involving a cylindrical handle. The real-time signal of the grip force and individual finger force were recorded to analyze real-time changes in the finger force contribution (FC). Subsequently, the time-FC curves of individual and paired fingers were analyzed. Results show are as follows: (1) When the FC of the index-ring finger pair exceeded that of the middle-little finger pair, the gripping load was relatively low, and a smaller difference between the FCs of the index-ring finger pair and the middle-little finger pair indicated a smaller following error. (2) The FC of index-ring finger pair is a better (higher-linearity) parameter to assess gripping status. These findings show that the paired-finger FC is an adequate parameter for the gripping-status assessment.

Comparing intensities and modalities within the sensory attenuation paradigm: Preliminary evidence

It is well-documented that the intensity of a self-generated somatosensory stimulus is perceived to be attenuated in respect to an identical stimulus generated by others. At present, it is not clear whether such a phenomenon, known as somatosensory attenuation, is based not only on feedforward motor signals but also on re-afferences towards the body. To answer this question, in the present pilot investigation on twelve healthy subjects, three types of stimulations (sensory non-nociceptive electrical – ES, nociceptive electrical – NES, and vibrotactile – VTS) and intensities (1 = sensory threshold ∗ 2.5 + 2 mA, 2 = sensory threshold ∗ 2.5 + 3 mA, 3 = sensory threshold ∗ 2.5 + 4 mA for ES and NES; 1 = sensory threshold ∗ 2 Hz, 2 = sensory threshold ∗ 3 Hz, 3 = sensory threshold ∗ 4 Hz for VTS) have been directly compared in a somatosensory attenuation paradigm. The results show that the attenuation effect emerged only with electrical stimuli and that it increased with higher intensities. These pilot findings suggest that, depending on the type and the intensity of stimulation, re-afferences can have a role in somatosensory attenuation. Additionally, it is possible to speculate the effect is present only with electrical stimuli because those stimuli are prospectively judged as potentially dangerous. This, in turn, would optimize planning successful reactions to incoming threatening stimuli.

Grasp quality measures: review and performance

The correct grasp of objects is a key aspect for the right fulfillment of a given task. Obtaining a good grasp requires algorithms to automatically determine proper contact points on the object as well as proper hand configurations, especially when dexterous manipulation is desired, and the quantification of a good grasp requires the definition of suitable grasp quality measures. This article reviews the quality measures proposed in the literature to evaluate grasp quality. The quality measures are classified into two groups according to the main aspect they evaluate: location of contact points on the object and hand configuration. The approaches that combine different measures from the two previous groups to obtain a global quality measure are also reviewed, as well as some measures related to human hand studies and grasp performance. Several examples are presented to illustrate and compare the performance of the reviewed measures.

Quantification of perceived exertion during isometric force production with the Borg scale in healthy individuals and patients with chronic stroke

BACKGROUND

The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale is widely used for many patient populations, but the ability of patients to accurately report their RPE without visual feedback has not been studied.

OBJECTIVE

The objective was to determine whether the Borg scale could be used as a measure of perceived isometric exertion in healthy subjects and patients with stroke.

METHODS

In experiment 1, young healthy subjects (n = 15) were instructed to perform spontaneous pushes (ie, self-selected effort) without visual feedback and to produce and hold self-determined isometric finger flexion at 5 Borg levels without visual feedback. In experiment 2, subjects with chronic stroke (n = 10) were instructed to produce self-determined isometric elbow flexion at 4 perceptual levels on the impaired and nonimpaired sides.

RESULTS

In experiment 1, young healthy subjects, asked to self-select without visual feedback (spontaneous push), tended to exert at a "somewhat hard" level, about 12% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Self-selection of forces ranged from 2% of MVC (ie, very light) to 39% of MVC (ie, very hard). In experiment 2, subjects with stroke were able to distinguish different levels of perceived exertion among light (19% MVC), somewhat hard (33% MVC), and hard (63% MVC) levels; this ability was not different for the impaired and nonimpaired limbs.

CONCLUSION

Both healthy subjects and subjects with stroke are able to differentiate distinct levels of perceived exertion during isometric force when prompted with the Borg scale. Efforts at lower percentages of MVC are perceived by subjects with stroke as greater-than-normal Borg RPE levels.

Asymmetry in grasp force matching and sense of effort

While asymmetries in upper limb force matching have been observed, the mechanisms underlying asymmetry in the sense of effort have not been conceptualized. The aim of this study was to investigate asymmetries in the perception and reproduction of grasp force. Forty-two young adults, 22 right-handed (RH) and 20 left-handed (LH), were, respectively, divided into three groups according to differences between their right and left-hand strength (left stronger than right, right stronger than left and right & left equivalent). A reference force, representing 20% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) produced by the right or left hand, was matched with same hand (Ipsilateral Remembered--IR) or opposite (Contralateral Remembered--CR) hand. The matching relative error was 92% (for RH) and 46% (for LH) greater in the CR than IR condition. Asymmetries in matching were significant for RH participants only in the CR condition and were dependent on right/left differences in hand strength as shown by the constant error (CE). For this RH population, right-hand overshoot of the left-hand reference and left-hand undershoot of the right-hand reference were significant when the right hand was stronger than the left. Asymmetry remained significant when CE was normalized (%MVC). Asymmetry was reduced when the strength of each hand was equivalent or when the left hand was stronger than the right. These findings suggest that effort perception is asymmetric in RH but not in LH individuals. The hand x strength interaction indicates that asymmetry in force matching is a consequence of both a difference in the respective cortical representations and motor components, which confer a different "gain" (input-output relationship) to each system. The similarity with position sense asymmetry suggests that the gain concept may be generalized to describe some functional/performance differences between the two hand/hemisphere systems. The more symmetrical performance of the LH than RH group underlines that context specific influence of handedness, hemisphere dominance and hemispheric interactions modulate performance symmetries/asymmetries.

Human Perception Test of Discontinuous Force and a Trial of Skill Transfer Using a Five-Fingered Haptic Interface

In the transferring of expert skills, it takes a great deal of time and effort for beginners to obtain new skills, and it is difficult to teach the skills by using only words. For those reasons, a skill transfer system that uses virtual reality (VR) and a haptic interface technique is very attractive. In this study, we investigated the human perception of fingertip force with respect to the following changes: (1) the spatial change of the presented force, and (2) the change of the time to present the force. Based on the results of the perception experiments, we considered the skill transfer to a person's five fingers by using a five-fingered haptic interface robot.

Finger force perception during ipsilateral and contralateral force matching tasks

The aims of the present study were to compare matching performance between ipsilateral and contralateral finger force matching tasks and to examine the effect of handedness on finger force perception. Eleven subjects were instructed to produce reference forces by an instructed finger (index-I or little-L finger) and to reproduce the same amount force by the same or a different finger within the hand (i.e., ipsilateral matching task), or by a finger of the other hand (i.e., contralateral matching task). The results of the ipsilateral and contralateral tasks in the present study commonly showed that (1) the reference and matching forces were matched closely when the two forces were produced by the same or homologous finger(s) such as I/I task; (2) the weaker little finger underestimated the magnitude of reference force of the index finger (I/L task), even with the higher level of effort (relative force), but the two forces were matched when considering total finger forces; (3) the stronger index finger closely matched the reference force of the little finger with the lower level of relative force (i.e., L/I task); (4) when considering the constant errors, I/L tasks showed an underestimation and L/I tasks showed an overestimation compared to I/I tasks. There was no handedness effect during ipsilateral tasks. During the contralateral task, the dominant hand overestimated the force of the non-dominant hand, while the non-dominant hand attempted to match the absolute force of the dominant hand. The overall results support the notion that the absolute, rather than relative, finger force is perceived and reproduced during ipsilateral and contralateral finger force matching tasks, indicating the uniqueness of finger force perception.

Perception of finger forces within the hand after index finger fatiguing exercise

The effect of fatigue on finger force perception within a hand during ipsilateral finger force matching was examined. Thirteen subjects were instructed to match a reference force of an instructed finger using the same or different finger within the hand before and after index finger fatigue. Absolute reference force targets for the index or little finger were identical during pre- and post-fatigue sessions. Fatigue was induced by a 60-s sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the index finger. Index finger MVC decreased approximately 29%, while there was a non-significant (about 5%) decrease in the little finger MVC. The results showed that: (1) the absolute reference and matching forces of the instructed fingers were not significantly changed after fatigue, while the total forces (sum of instructed and uninstructed finger forces) were increased after fatigue. (2) The relative forces (with respect to corresponding pre- and post-fatigue MVCs) of the index finger increased significantly in both reference and matching tasks, while the relative forces of the little finger remained unchanged after fatigue. (3) Matching errors remained unchanged after fatigue when the fatigued index finger produced the reference force, while the errors increased significantly when the fatigued index finger produced the matching force. (4) Enslaving (difference between total and instructed finger forces) increased significantly after fatigue, especially during force production by the fatigued index finger and when the little finger produced matching forces at higher force levels. (5) Enslaving significantly increased matching errors particularly after fatigue. Taken together, our results suggest that absolute finger forces within the hand are perceived within the CNS during ipsilateral finger force matching. Perception of absolute forces of the fatigued index finger is not altered after fatigue. The ability of the fatigued index finger to reproduce little finger forces is impaired to a certain degree, however. The impairment is likely to be attributable to altered afferent/efferent relationships of the fatigued index finger.

Error compensation during finger force production after one- and four-finger voluntarily fatiguing exercise

The effect of muscle fatigue on error compensation strategies during multi-finger ramp force production tasks was investigated. Thirteen young, healthy subjects were instructed to produce a total force with four fingers of the right hand to accurately match a visually displayed template. The template consisted of a 3-s waiting period, a 3-s ramp force production [from 0 to 30% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)], and a 3-s constant force production. A series of 12 ramp trials was performed before and after fatigue. Fatigue was induced by a 60-s maximal isometric force production with either the index-finger only or with all four fingers during two separate testing sessions. The average percent of drop was 38.2% in the MVC of the index finger after index-finger fatiguing exercise and 38.3% in the MVC of all fingers after four-finger fatiguing exercise. The ability of individual fingers to compensate for each other's errors in order for the total force to match the preset template was quantified as the error compensation index (ECI), i.e., the ratio of the sum of variances of individual finger forces and the variance of the total force. By comparing pre- and post-fatigue performance during four-finger ramp force production, we observed that the variance of the total force was not significantly changed after one- or four-finger fatiguing exercise. The ECI significantly decreased after four-finger fatiguing exercise, especially during the last second of the ramp; while the ECI remained unchanged after index finger single-finger fatiguing exercise. These results suggest that the central nervous system is able to utilize the abundant degrees of freedom to compensate for partial impairment of the motor apparatus induced by muscle fatigue to maintain the desired performance. However, this ability is significantly decreased when all elements of the motor apparatus are impaired.
