Epilepsy identification based on EEG signal using RQA method

PURPOSE

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases and its cause is not unequivocal. Thus, additional methods and searches that may help to diagnose the disease are used in the clinical practice. In this study, we tested the possibility of using the Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) method to identify epilepsy and present the analysis of EEG signals of healthy patients and epileptic patients by the RQA method.

MATERIALS/METHODS

The recordings of signals belong to 13 patients, which were divided into 2 groups: Group A (5 epileptic patients) and Group B (8 healthy patients). In this study Fp1, Fp2, T3 and T4 electrodes were considered in the analysis using the RQA method.

RESULTS

It is difficult to explore the dynamics of signals by linear methods. In this study, another way of analyzing the dynamics of signals by the RQA method is presented. The RQA method revealed differences in the dynamics between the epileptic and normal signals, which seemed important in an organoleptic way. It was found that the dynamics of epileptic signals is more periodic than normal signals. To confirm the correctness of the statements issued for the RQA data the Principal Component Analysis mapping was applied. This method showed more clearly the differences in the dynamics of both signals.

CONCLUSIONS

The RQA method can be used to identify nonlinear biomedical signals such as EEG signals.

Identification of preterm birth based on RQA analysis of electrohysterograms

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Common methods for data analysis are mainly based on linear concepts, but in recent years nonlinear dynamics methods have been introduced. It is a well-known fact that In typical biological systems lack of stationarity and rather sudden changes of state are the properties distinguishing them from each other. There is an urgent need to better understand the mechanical activity of the myometrium (its contractility) to find a solution for preterm delivery problem, the largest cause of neonatal deaths and morbidity. The electrohysterographic signal (EHG) is a good non-linear, bioelectrical indicator for the detection and identification of term and preterm birth.

METHODS

The material of the study consists of EHG signals, obtained from 20 patients between the 24th and the 28th week of pregnancy with threatened preterm labor. The women were divided into two groups: those delivering after more than 7 days - group A (n = 10) and women delivering within 7 days - group B (n = 10). In this paper, an analysis of bioelectrical signals was performed by recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) and principal component analysis (PCA) to distinguish particular patterns for term and preterm birth. To date, these methods have not been used for the evaluation of bioelectrical activity in the uterus. To train novel classifiers for the EHG signals Support Vectors Machine classifications (multiclass SVM) was used. Statistical analysis was performed by means of non-parametric Mann-Whitney test.

RESULTS

From among eleven parameters obtained from recurrence quantification analysis, five most appropriate were chosen: Recurrence Rate, Determinism, Laminarity, Entropy and Recurrence Period Density Entropy. Significant increase (p < .001) of Recurrence Rate was found in patients from group B, while increase of parameters, besides Laminarity, was found in patients from group A. The accuracy of classification obtained as a result of the analysis increased to 83,32%.

CONCLUSION

We showed that the respectively selected recurrence quantificators obtained for that time series could be used to classify all those signals to the appropriate group. The proposed analysis could help in detecting preterm labor based on the EHG signal dynamics.

Subject-based discriminative sparse representation model for detection of concealed information

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

The use of machine learning approaches in concealed information test (CIT) plays a key role in the progress of this neurophysiological field. In this paper, we presented a new machine learning method for CIT in which each subject is considered independent of the others. The main goal of this study is to adapt the discriminative sparse models to be applicable for subject-based concealed information test.

METHODS

In order to provide sufficient discriminability between guilty and innocent subjects, we introduced a novel discriminative sparse representation model and its appropriate learning methods. For evaluation of the method forty-four subjects participated in a mock crime scenario and their EEG data were recorded. As the model input, in this study the recurrence plot features were extracted from single trial data of different stimuli. Then the extracted feature vectors were reduced using statistical dependency method. The reduced feature vector went through the proposed subject-based sparse model in which the discrimination power of sparse code and reconstruction error were applied simultaneously.

RESULTS

Experimental results showed that the proposed approach achieved better performance than other competing discriminative sparse models. The classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the presented sparsity-based method were about 93%, 91% and 95% respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Using the EEG data of a single subject in response to different stimuli types and with the aid of the proposed discriminative sparse representation model, one can distinguish guilty subjects from innocent ones. Indeed, this property eliminates the necessity of several subject EEG data in model learning and decision making for a specific subject.

Analysis of Gamma-Band Activity from Human EEG Using Empirical Mode Decomposition

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether gamma-band activity detection is improved when a filter, based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD), is added to the pre-processing block of single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) signals. EMD decomposes the original signal into a finite number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). EEGs from 25 control subjects were registered in basal and motor activity (hand movements) using only one EEG channel. Over the basic signal, IMF signals are computed. Gamma-band activity is computed using power spectrum density in the 30-60 Hz range. Event-related synchronization (ERS) was defined as the ratio of motor and basal activity. To evaluate the performance of the new EMD based method, ERS was computed from the basic and IMF signals. The ERS obtained using IMFs improves, from 31.00% to 73.86%, on the original ERS for the right hand, and from 22.17% to 47.69% for the left hand. As EEG processing is improved, the clinical applications of gamma-band activity will expand.
