A novel multi-feature fusion attention neural network for the recognition of epileptic EEG signals

Epilepsy is a common chronic brain disorder. Detecting epilepsy by observing electroencephalography (EEG) is the main method neurologists use, but this method is time-consuming. EEG signals are non-stationary, nonlinear, and often highly noisy, so it remains challenging to recognize epileptic EEG signals more accurately and automatically. This paper proposes a novel classification system of epileptic EEG signals for single-channel EEG based on the attention network that integrates time-frequency and nonlinear dynamic features. The proposed system has three novel modules. The first module constructs the Hilbert spectrum (HS) with high time-frequency resolution into a two-channel parallel convolutional network. The time-frequency features are fully extracted by complementing the high-dimensional features of the two branches. The second module constructs a grayscale recurrence plot (GRP) that contains more nonlinear dynamic features than traditional RP, fed into the residual-connected convolution module for effective learning of nonlinear dynamic features. The third module is the feature fusion module based on a self-attention mechanism to assign optimal weights to different types of features and further enhance the information extraction capability of the system. Therefore, the system is named HG-SANet. The results of several classification tasks on the Bonn EEG database and the Bern-Barcelona EEG database show that the HG-SANet can effectively capture the contribution degree of the extracted features from different domains, significantly enhance the expression ability of the model, and improve the accuracy of the recognition of epileptic EEG signals. The HG-SANet can improve the diagnosis and treatment efficiency of epilepsy and has broad application prospects in the fields of brain disease diagnosis.

Exploring the potential of pretrained CNNs and time-frequency methods for accurate epileptic EEG classification: a comparative study

Prompt diagnosis of epilepsy relies on accurate classification of automated electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Several approaches have been developed to characterize epileptic EEG data; however, none of them have exploited time-frequency data to evaluate the effect of tweaking parameters in pretrained frameworks for EEG data classification. This study compares the performance of several pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) namely, AlexNet, GoogLeNet, MobileNetV2, ResNet-18 and SqueezeNet for the localization of epilepsy EEG data using various time-frequency data representation algorithms. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT), empirical Fourier decomposition (EFD), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), empirical wavelet transform (EWT), and variational mode decomposition (VMD) were exploited for the acquisition of 2D scalograms from 1D data. The research evaluates the effect of multiple factors, including noisy versus denoised scalograms, different optimizers, learning rates, single versus dual channels, model size, and computational time consumption. The benchmark Bern-Barcelona EEG dataset is used for testing purpose. Results obtained show that the combination of MobileNetV2, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Adam optimizer at a learning rate of 10-4, coupled with dual-data channels, provides the best performance metrics. Specifically, these parameters result in optimal sensitivity, specificity, f1-score, and classification accuracy, with respective values of 96.06%, 96.15%, 96.08%, and 96.10%. To further corroborate the efficacy of opted pretrained models on exploited Signal Decomposition (SD) algorithms, the classifiers are also being simulated on Temple University database at pinnacle modeling composition. A similar pattern in the outcome readily validate the findings of our study and robustness of deep learning models on epilepsy EEG scalograms.The conclusions drawn emphasize the potential of pretrained CNN-based models to create a robust, automated system for diagnosing epileptiform. Furthermore, the study offers insights into the effectiveness of varying time-frequency techniques and classifier parameters for classifying epileptic EEG data.

Seizure detection using nonlinear measures over EEG frequency bands and deep learning classifiers

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes patients to suffer from convulsions, which affects their behavior and way of life. Epilepsy can be detected with electroencephalograms (EEGs), which record brain neural activity. Traditional approaches for detecting epileptic seizures from an EEG signal are time-consuming and annoying. To supersede these traditional methods, a myriad of automated seizure detection frameworks based on machine learning techniques have recently been developed. Feature extraction and classification are the two essential phases for seizure detection. The classifier assigns the proper class label after feature extraction lowers the input pattern space while maintaining useful features. This paper proposes a new feature extraction method based on calculating nonlinear features from the most relevant EEG frequency bands. The EEG signal is first decomposed into smaller time segments from which a vector of nonlinear features is computed and supplied to machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) classifiers. Experiments on the Bonn dataset reveals an accuracy of 99.7% reached in classifying normal and ictal EEG signals; and an accuracy of 98.8% in the discrimination of ictal and interictal EEG signals. Furthermore, a performance of 100% is achieved on the Hauz Khas dataset. The classification results of the proposed approach were compared to those from published state of the art techniques. Our results are equivalent to or better than some recent studies appeared in the literature.

V2IED: Dual-view learning framework for detecting events of interictal epileptiform discharges

Interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) as large intermittent electrophysiological events are associated with various severe brain disorders. Automated IED detection has long been a challenging task, and mainstream methods largely focus on singling out IEDs from backgrounds from the perspective of waveform, leaving normal sharp transients/artifacts with similar waveforms almost unattended. An open issue still remains to accurately detect IED events that directly reflect the abnormalities in brain electrophysiological activities, minimizing the interference from irrelevant sharp transients with similar waveforms only. This study then proposes a dual-view learning framework (namely V2IED) to detect IED events from multi-channel EEG via aggregating features from the two phases: (1) Morphological Feature Learning: directly treating the EEG as a sequence with multiple channels, a 1D-CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) is applied to explicitly learning the deep morphological features; and (2) Spatial Feature Learning: viewing the EEG as a 3D tensor embedding channel topology, a CNN captures the spatial features at each sampling point followed by an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memories) to learn the evolution of these features. Experimental results from a public EEG dataset against the state-of-the-art counterparts indicate that: (1) compared with the existing optimal models, V2IED achieves a larger area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve in detecting IEDs from normal sharp transients with a 5.25% improvement in accuracy; (2) the introduction of spatial features improves performance by 2.4% in accuracy; and (3) V2IED also performs excellently in distinguishing IEDs from background signals especially benign variants.

Parameterized aperiodic and periodic components of single-channel EEG enables reliable seizure detection

Although it is clinically important, a reliable and economical solution to automatic seizure detection for patients at home is yet to be developed. Traditional algorithms rely on multi-channel EEG signals and features of canonical EEG power description. This study is aimed to propose an effective single-channel EEG seizure detection method centered on novel EEG power parameterization and channel selection algorithms. We employed the publicly available multi-channel CHB-MIT Scalp EEG database to gauge the effectiveness of our approach. We first adapted a power spectra parameterization algorithm to characterize the aperiodic and periodic components of the ictal and inter-ictal EEGs. We selected four features based on their statistical significance and interpretability, and developed a ranking approach to channel selection for each patient. We then tested the effectiveness of our approaches to channel and feature selection for automatic seizure detection using support vector machine (SVM) as the classifier. The performance of our algorithm was evaluated using five-fold cross-validation and compared to those methods of comparable complexity (using one or two channels of EEG), in terms of accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision and F1 score. Some channels of EEG signals show strikingly different distributions of PSD features between the ictal and inter-ictal states. Four features including the offset and exponent parameters for the aperiodic component and the first and second highest total power (TPW1 and TPW2) form the basis of channel selection and the input of SVM classifier. The selected channel is found to be patient-specific. Our approach has achieved a mean sensitivity of 95.6%, specificity of 99.2%, accuracy of 98.6%, precision of 95.5%, and F1 score of 95.5%. Compared with algorithms in previous studies that used one or two channels of EEG signals, ours outperforms in specificity and accuracy with comparable sensitivity. EEG power spectra parameterization to feature extraction and feature ranking-based channel selection are found to enable efficient and effective automatic seizure detection based on single-channel EEG signal.

Advanced framework for epilepsy detection through image-based EEG signal analysis

Background

Recurrent and unpredictable seizures characterize epilepsy, a neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide. Epilepsy diagnosis is crucial for timely treatment and better outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) time-series data analysis is essential for epilepsy diagnosis and surveillance. Complex signal processing methods used in traditional EEG analysis are computationally demanding and difficult to generalize across patients. Researchers are using machine learning to improve epilepsy detection, particularly visual feature extraction from EEG time-series data.

Objective

This study examines the application of a Gramian Angular Summation Field (GASF) approach for the analysis of EEG signals. Additionally, it explores the utilization of image features, specifically the Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) techniques, for the purpose of epilepsy detection in EEG data.

Methods

The proposed methodology encompasses the transformation of EEG signals into images based on GASF, followed by the extraction of features utilizing SIFT and ORB techniques, and ultimately, the selection of relevant features. A state-of-the-art machine learning classifier is employed to classify GASF images into two categories: normal EEG patterns and focal EEG patterns. Bern-Barcelona EEG recordings were used to test the proposed method.

Results

This method classifies EEG signals with 96% accuracy using SIFT features and 94% using ORB features. The Random Forest (RF) classifier surpasses state-of-the-art approaches in precision, recall, F1-score, specificity, and Area Under Curve (AUC). The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve shows that Random Forest outperforms Support Vector Machine (SVM) and k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) classifiers.

Significance

The suggested method has many advantages over time-series EEG data analysis and machine learning classifiers used in epilepsy detection studies. A novel image-based preprocessing pipeline using GASF for robust image synthesis and SIFT and ORB for feature extraction is presented here. The study found that the suggested method can accurately discriminate between normal and focal EEG signals, improving patient outcomes through early and accurate epilepsy diagnosis.

Sneaky emotions: impact of data partitions in affective computing experiments with brain-computer interfacing

Brain-Computer Interfacing (BCI) has shown promise in Machine Learning (ML) for emotion recognition. Unfortunately, how data are partitioned in training/test splits is often overlooked, which makes it difficult to attribute research findings to actual modeling improvements or to partitioning issues. We introduce the "data transfer rate" construct (i.e., how much data of the test samples are seen during training) and use it to examine data partitioning effects under several conditions. As a use case, we consider emotion recognition in videos using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Three data splits are considered, each representing a relevant BCI task: subject-independent (affective decoding), video-independent (affective annotation), and time-based (feature extraction). Model performance may change significantly (ranging e.g. from 50% to 90%) depending on how data is partitioned, in classification accuracy. This was evidenced in all experimental conditions tested. Our results show that (1) for affective decoding, it is hard to achieve performance above the baseline case (random classification) unless some data of the test subjects are considered in the training partition; (2) for affective annotation, having data from the same subject in training and test partitions, even though they correspond to different videos, also increases performance; and (3) later signal segments are generally more discriminative, but it is the number of segments (data points) what matters the most. Our findings not only have implications in how brain data are managed, but also in how experimental conditions and results are reported.

EEG seizure detection: concepts, techniques, challenges, and future trends

A central nervous system disorder is usually referred to as epilepsy. In epilepsy brain activity becomes abnormal, leading to times of abnormal behavior or seizures, and at times loss of awareness. Consequently, epilepsy patients face problems in daily life due to precautions they must take to adapt to this condition, particularly when they use heavy equipment, e.g., vehicle derivation. Epilepsy studies rely primarily on electroencephalography (EEG) signals to evaluate brain activity during seizures. It is troublesome and time-consuming to manually decide the location of seizures in EEG signals. The automatic detection framework is one of the principal tools to help doctors and patients take appropriate precautions. This paper reviews the epilepsy mentality disorder and the types of seizure, preprocessing operations that are performed on EEG data, a generally extracted feature from the signal, and a detailed view on classification procedures used in this problem and provide insights on the difficulties and future research directions in this innovative theme. Therefore, this paper presents a review of work on recent methods for the epileptic seizure process along with providing perspectives and concepts to researchers to present an automated EEG-based epileptic seizure detection system using IoT and machine learning classifiers for remote patient monitoring in the context of smart healthcare systems. Finally, challenges and open research points in EEG seizure detection are investigated.

Epileptic Seizure Detection Using Machine Learning: Taxonomy, Opportunities, and Challenges

Epilepsy is a life-threatening neurological brain disorder that gives rise to recurrent unprovoked seizures. It occurs due to abnormal chemical changes in our brains. For many years, studies have been conducted to support the automatic diagnosis of epileptic seizures for clinicians’ ease. For that, several studies entail machine learning methods for early predicting epileptic seizures. Mainly, feature extraction methods have been used to extract the right features from the EEG data generated by the EEG machine. Then various machine learning classifiers are used for the classification process. This study provides a systematic literature review of the feature selection process and classification performance. This review was limited to finding the most used feature extraction methods and the classifiers used for accurate classification of normal to epileptic seizures. The existing literature was examined from well-known repositories such as MDPI, IEEE Xplore, Wiley, Elsevier, ACM, Springer link, and others. Furthermore, a taxonomy was created that recapitulates the state-of-the-art used solutions for this problem. We also studied the nature of different benchmark and unbiased datasets and gave a rigorous analysis of the working of classifiers. Finally, we concluded the research by presenting the gaps, challenges, and opportunities that can further help researchers predict epileptic seizures.

EEG-Based Epileptic Seizure Detection via Machine/Deep Learning Approaches: A Systematic Review

Epileptic seizure is one of the most chronic neurological diseases that instantaneously disrupts the lifestyle of affected individuals. Toward developing novel and efficient technology for epileptic seizure management, recent diagnostic approaches have focused on developing machine/deep learning model (ML/DL)-based electroencephalogram (EEG) methods. Importantly, EEG's noninvasiveness and ability to offer repeated patterns of epileptic-related electrophysiological information have motivated the development of varied ML/DL algorithms for epileptic seizure diagnosis in the recent years. However, EEG's low amplitude and nonstationary characteristics make it difficult for existing ML/DL models to achieve a consistent and satisfactory diagnosis outcome, especially in clinical settings, where environmental factors could hardly be avoided. Though several recent works have explored the use of EEG-based ML/DL methods and statistical feature for seizure diagnosis, it is unclear what the advantages and limitations of these works are, which might preclude the advancement of research and development in the field of epileptic seizure diagnosis and appropriate criteria for selecting ML/DL models and statistical feature extraction methods for EEG-based epileptic seizure diagnosis. Therefore, this paper attempts to bridge this research gap by conducting an extensive systematic review on the recent developments of EEG-based ML/DL technologies for epileptic seizure diagnosis. In the review, current development in seizure diagnosis, various statistical feature extraction methods, ML/DL models, their performances, limitations, and core challenges as applied in EEG-based epileptic seizure diagnosis were meticulously reviewed and compared. In addition, proper criteria for selecting appropriate and efficient feature extraction techniques and ML/DL models for epileptic seizure diagnosis were also discussed. Findings from this study will aid researchers in deciding the most efficient ML/DL models with optimal feature extraction methods to improve the performance of EEG-based epileptic seizure detection.

Review on Epileptic Seizure Prediction: Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches

Epileptic seizures occur due to brain abnormalities that can indirectly affect patient's health. It occurs abruptly without any symptoms and thus increases the mortality rate of humans. Almost 1% of world's population suffers from epileptic seizures. Prediction of seizures before the beginning of onset is beneficial for preventing seizures by medication. Nowadays, modern computational tools, machine learning, and deep learning methods have been used to predict seizures using EEG. However, EEG signals may get corrupted with background noise, and artifacts such as eye blinks and physical movements of muscles may lead to "pops" in the signal, resulting in electrical interference, which is cumbersome to detect through visual inspection for longer duration recordings. These limitations in automatic detection of interictal spikes and epileptic seizures are preferred, which is an essential tool for examining and scrutinizing the EEG recording more precisely. These restrictions bring our attention to present a review of automated schemes that will help neurologists categorize epileptic and nonepileptic signals. While preparing this review paper, it is observed that feature selection and classification are the main challenges in epilepsy prediction algorithms. This paper presents various techniques depending on various features and classifiers over the last few years. The methods presented will give a detailed understanding and ideas about seizure prediction and future research directions.

Scalp EEG recordings of pediatric epilepsy patients: A dataset for automatic detection of interictal epileptiform discharges from routine EEG

Interictal Epileptiform Discharges (IEDs) in routine EEG is crucial evidence of epilepsy in one patient. Though some studies have reported on automated detection of IEDs, the availability of open benchmark datasets for evaluating these methods is limited. This article presents a scalp EEG dataset of pediatric epilepsy patients. The dataset contains 19 channel EEG recordings of 21 subjects who are advised to undergo routine EEG tests to diagnose epilepsy. Among these 21 subjects, IEDs are found in EEG recordings of 11 subjects as confirmed by neurologists. The routine EEG recordings of the remaining 10 subjects are free from IEDs. A 32 channel EEG machine is used to record the routine EEG, and an international 10-20 electrode placement system is used to place the electrodes on the subject's scalp. A longitudinal bipolar montage channel configuration is used to collect the signals. IEDs present in routine EEG of epileptic patients are annotated by a neuro-technician and are provided with the dataset. The raw EEG data is further segmented into 10 s epochs based on the annotations for easy analysis and validation in automated IED detection systems. These 10 s epochs are also included in the dataset. The dataset is very useful for modeling novel automated IED detection systems that reduce the burdens of neurologists or neurophysiologists. In addition, the usability of the proposed dataset has also been experimented on a model based on exponential energy and support vector machine. The classification performance of the model indicates that the proposed dataset can be used as a benchmark dataset for automated IED detection.

Development of single-channel electroencephalography signal analysis model for real-time drowsiness detection : SEEGDD

Drowsiness detection is essential in some critical tasks such as vehicle driving, crane operating, mining blasting, and so on, which can help minimize the risks of inattentiveness. Electroencephalography (EEG) based drowsiness detection methods have been shown to be effective. However, due to the non-stationary nature of EEG signals, techniques such as signal transformation and sub-band extraction are increasingly being used to automatically classify awake and drowsy states. Most of these procedures require high computation time. In this paper, analytical and single-feature computation are used to propose a single-channel EEG-based drowsiness detection method to overcome this. Physionet sleep dataset and the simulated virtual driving dataset were used to test the proposed model. When compared to existing work, the proposed approach yields better results.

A Recent Investigation on Detection and Classification of Epileptic Seizure Techniques Using EEG Signal

The benefits of early detection and classification of epileptic seizures in analysis, monitoring and diagnosis for the realization and actualization of computer-aided devices and recent internet of medical things (IoMT) devices can never be overemphasized. The success of these applications largely depends on the accuracy of the detection and classification techniques employed. Several methods have been investigated, proposed and developed over the years. This paper investigates various seizure detection algorithms and classifications in the last decade, including conventional techniques and recent deep learning algorithms. It also discusses epileptiform detection as one of the steps towards advanced diagnoses of disorders of consciousness (DOCs) and their understanding. A performance comparison was carried out on the different algorithms investigated, and their advantages and disadvantages were explored. From our survey, much attention has recently been paid to exploring the efficacy of deep learning algorithms in seizure detection and classification, which are employed in other areas such as image processing and classification. Hybrid deep learning has also been explored, with CNN-RNN being the most popular.

Selection of optimal wavelet features for epileptic EEG signal classification with LSTM

Epilepsy remains one of the most common chronic neurological disorders; hence, there is a need to further investigate various models for automatic detection of seizure activity. An effective detection model can be achieved by minimizing the complexity of the model in terms of trainable parameters while still maintaining high accuracy. One way to achieve this is to select the minimum possible number of features. In this paper, we propose a long short-term memory (LSTM) network for the classification of epileptic EEG signals. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is employed to remove noise and extract 20 eigenvalue features. The optimal features were then identified using correlation and P value analysis. The proposed method significantly reduces the number of trainable LSTM parameters required to attain high accuracy. Finally, our model outperforms other proposed frameworks, including popular classifiers such as logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) and decision tree (DT).

Expert Hypertension Detection System Featuring Pulse Plethysmograph Signals and Hybrid Feature Selection and Reduction Scheme

Hypertension is an antecedent to cardiac disorders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people affected with hypertension will reach around 1.56 billion by 2025. Early detection of hypertension is imperative to prevent the complications caused by cardiac abnormalities. Hypertension usually possesses no apparent detectable symptoms; hence, the control rate is significantly low. Computer-aided diagnosis based on machine learning and signal analysis has recently been applied to identify biomarkers for the accurate prediction of hypertension. This research proposes a new expert hypertension detection system (EHDS) from pulse plethysmograph (PuPG) signals for the categorization of normal and hypertension. The PuPG signal data set, including rich information of cardiac activity, was acquired from healthy and hypertensive subjects. The raw PuPG signals were preprocessed through empirical mode decomposition (EMD) by decomposing a signal into its constituent components. A combination of multi-domain features was extracted from the preprocessed PuPG signal. The features exhibiting high discriminative characteristics were selected and reduced through a proposed hybrid feature selection and reduction (HFSR) scheme. Selected features were subjected to various classification methods in a comparative fashion in which the best performance of 99.4% accuracy, 99.6% sensitivity, and 99.2% specificity was achieved through weighted k-nearest neighbor (KNN-W). The performance of the proposed EHDS was thoroughly assessed by tenfold cross-validation. The proposed EHDS achieved better detection performance in comparison to other electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmograph (PPG)-based methods.

Automated epilepsy detection techniques from electroencephalogram signals: a review study

Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition which contemplates as top 5 reasons for avoidable mortality from ages 5-29 in the worldwide. The avoidable deaths due to epilepsy can be reduced by developing efficient automated epilepsy detection or prediction machines or software. To develop an automated epilepsy detection framework, it is essential to properly understand the existing techniques and their benefit as well as detriment also. This paper aims to provide insight on the information about the existing epilepsy detection and classification techniques as they are crucial for supporting clinical-decision in the course of epilepsy treatment. This review study accentuate on the existing epilepsy detection approaches and their drawbacks. This information presented in this article will be helpful to the neuroscientist, researchers as well as to technicians for assisting them in selecting the reliable and appropriate techniques for analyzing epilepsy and developing an automated software system of epilepsy identification.

Detection of Focal and Non-Focal Electroencephalogram Signals Using Fast Walsh-Hadamard Transform and Artificial Neural Network

The discrimination of non-focal class (NFC) and focal class (FC), is vital in localizing the epileptogenic zone (EZ) during neurosurgery. In the conventional diagnosis method, the neurologist has to visually examine the long hour electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which consumes time and is prone to error. Hence, in this present work, automated diagnosis of FC EEG signals from NFC EEG signals is developed using the Fast Walsh-Hadamard Transform (FWHT) method, entropies, and artificial neural network (ANN). The FWHT analyzes the EEG signals in the frequency domain and decomposes it into the Hadamard coefficients. Five different nonlinear features, namely approximate entropy (ApEn), log-energy entropy (LogEn), fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn), sample entropy (SampEn), and permutation entropy (PermEn) are extracted from the decomposed Hadamard coefficients. The extracted features detail the nonlinearity in the NFC and the FC EEG signals. The judicious entropy features are supplied to the ANN classifier, with a 10-fold cross-validation method to classify the NFC and FC classes. Two publicly available datasets such as the University of Bonn and Bern-Barcelona dataset are used to evaluate the proposed approach. A maximum sensitivity of 99.70%, the accuracy of 99.50%, and specificity of 99.30% with the 3750 pairs of NFC and FC signal are achieved using the Bern-Barcelona dataset, while the accuracy of 92.80%, the sensitivity of 91%, and specificity of 94.60% is achieved using University of Bonn dataset. Compared to the existing technique, the proposed approach attained a maximum classification performance in both the dataset.

Epileptic seizure recognition using EEG wavelet decomposition based on nonlinear and statistical features with support vector machine classification

Epileptic seizure (ES) is a neurological brain dysfunction. ES can be detected using the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. However, visual inspection of ES using long-time EEG recordings is a difficult, time-consuming and a costly procedure. Thus, automatic epilepsy recognition is of primary importance. In this paper, a new method is proposed for automatic ES recognition using short-time EEG recordings. The method is based on first decomposing the EEG signals on sub-signals using discrete wavelet transform. Then, from the obtained sub-signals, different non-linear parameters such as approximate entropy (ApEn), largest Lyapunov exponents (LLE) and statistical parameters are determined. These parameters along with phase entropies, calculated through higher order spectrum analysis, are used as an input vector of a multi-class support vector machine (MSVM) for ES recognition. The proposed method is evaluated using the standard EEG database developed by the Department of Epileptology, University of Bonn, Germany. The evaluation is carried out through a large number of classification experiments. Different statistical metrics namely Sensitivity (Se), Specificity (Sp) and classification accuracy (Ac) are calculated and compared to those obtained in the scientific research literature. The obtained results show that the proposed method achieves high accuracies, which are as good as the best existing state-of-the-art methods studied using the same EEG database.

A review of epileptic seizure detection using machine learning classifiers

Epilepsy is a serious chronic neurological disorder, can be detected by analyzing the brain signals produced by brain neurons. Neurons are connected to each other in a complex way to communicate with human organs and generate signals. The monitoring of these brain signals is commonly done using Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrocorticography (ECoG) media. These signals are complex, noisy, non-linear, non-stationary and produce a high volume of data. Hence, the detection of seizures and discovery of the brain-related knowledge is a challenging task. Machine learning classifiers are able to classify EEG data and detect seizures along with revealing relevant sensible patterns without compromising performance. As such, various researchers have developed number of approaches to seizure detection using machine learning classifiers and statistical features. The main challenges are selecting appropriate classifiers and features. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the wide varieties of these techniques over the last few years based on the taxonomy of statistical features and machine learning classifiers-'black-box' and 'non-black-box'. The presented state-of-the-art methods and ideas will give a detailed understanding about seizure detection and classification, and research directions in the future.

Epileptic seizure classifications using empirical mode decomposition and its derivative

BACKGROUND

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders associated with disruption of brain activity. In the classification and detection of epileptic seizures, electroencephalography (EEG) measurements, which record the electrical activities of the brain, are frequently used. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and its derivative, ensemble EMD (EEMD) are recently developed methods used to decompose non-stationary and nonlinear signals such as EEG into a finite number of oscillations called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Our main objective in this study is to present a hybrid IMF selection method combining four different approaches (energy, correlation, power spectral distance, and statistical significance measures), and investigate the effect of selected IMFs extracted by EMD and EEMD on the classification. We have applied the proposed IMF selection approach on the classification of EEG signals recorded from epilepsy patients who are under treatment at our collaborator hospital. Multichannel EEG signals collected from epilepsy patients are decomposed into IMFs, and then IMF selection was performed. Finally, time- and spectral-domain, and nonlinear features are extracted and feature sets are created for the classification.

RESULTS

The maximum classification accuracies obtained using various combinations of IMFs were 94.56%, 95.63%, 96.8%, and 96.25% for SVM, KNN, naive Bayes, and logistic regression classifiers, respectively, by using EMD analysis; whereas, the EEMD approach has provided maximum classification accuracies of 96.06%, 97%, 97%, and 96.25% for SVM, KNN, naive Bayes, and logistic regression, respectively. Classification performance with the same features obtained using direct EEG signals instead of the decomposed IMFs was worse than the aforementioned 2 approaches for every combination.

CONCLUSION

Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IMF selection approach affects the classification results. Also, EEMD provides a robust method for feature extraction from EEG signals in order to classify pre-seizure and seizure segments.
