DMMAN: A two-stage audio-visual fusion framework for sound separation and event localization

Videos are used widely as the media platforms for human beings to touch the physical change of the world. However, we always receive the mixed sound from the multiple sound objects, and cannot distinguish and localize the sounds as the separate entities in videos. In order to solve this problem, a model named the Deep Multi-Modal Attention Network (DMMAN), is established to model the unconstrained video datasets for further finishing the sound source separation and event localization tasks in this paper. Based on the multi-modal separator and multi-modal matching classifier module, our model focuses on the sound separation and modal synchronization problems using two stage fusion of the sound and visual features. To link the multi-modal separator and multi-modal matching classifier modules, the regression and classification losses are employed to build the loss function of the DMMAN. The estimated spectrum masks and attention synchronization scores calculated by the DMMAN can be easily generalized to the sound source and event localization tasks. The quantitative experimental results show the DMMAN not only separates the high quality of the sound sources evaluated by Signal-to-Distortion Ratio and Signal-to-Interference Ratio metrics, but also is suitable for the mixed sound scenes that are never heard jointly. Meanwhile, DMMAN achieves better classification accuracy than other contrast baselines for the event localization tasks.

Independent components analysis (ICA) at the "cocktail-party" in analytical chemistry

Independent components analysis (ICA) is a probabilistic method, whose goal is to extract underlying component signals, that are maximally independent and non-Gaussian, from mixed observed signals. Since the data acquired in many applications in analytical chemistry are mixtures of component signals, such a method is of great interest. In this article recent ICA applications for quantitative and qualitative analysis in analytical chemistry are reviewed. The following experimental techniques are covered: fluorescence, UV-VIS, NMR, vibrational spectroscopies as well as chromatographic profiles. Furthermore, we reviewed ICA as a preprocessing tool as well as existing hybrid ICA-based multivariate approaches. Finally, further research directions are proposed. Our review shows that ICA is starting to play an important role in analytical chemistry, and this will definitely increase in the future.

On extending the complex FastICA algorithms to noisy data

Independent component analysis (ICA) methods are widely applied to modern digital signal processing. The complex-valued FastICA algorithms are one type of the most significant methods. However, the complex ICA model usually omits the noise. In this paper, we discuss two complex FastICA algorithms for noisy data, where the cost functions are based on kurtosis and negentropy respectively. The nc-FastICA and KM-F algorithms are modified to separate noisy data. At the same time, we also give the stability conditions of cost functions. Simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.
