Activation of human auditory cortex during speech perception: effects of monaural, binaural, and dichotic presentation

Behavioral and Cortical Activation Changes in Children Following Auditory Training for Dichotic Deficits

We report changes following auditory rehabilitation for interaural asymmetry (ARIA) training in behavioral test performance and cortical activation in children identified with dichotic listening deficits. In a one group pretest-posttest design, measures of dichotic listening, speech perception in noise, and frequency pattern identification were assessed before and 3 to 4.5 months after completing an auditory training protocol designed to improve binaural processing of verbal material. Functional MRI scans were also acquired before and after treatment while participants passively listened in silence or to diotic or dichotic digits. Significant improvements occurred after ARIA training for dichotic listening and speech-in-noise tests. Post-ARIA, fMRI activation increased during diotic tasks in anterior cingulate and medial prefrontal regions and during dichotic tasks, decreased in the left precentral gyrus, right-hemisphere pars triangularis, and right dorsolateral and ventral prefrontal cortices, regions known to be engaged in phonologic processing and working memory. The results suggest that children with dichotic deficits may benefit from the ARIA program because of reorganization of cortical capacity required for listening and a reduced need for higher-order, top-down processing skills when listening to dichotic presentations.

Auditory cortical plasticity after cochlear implantation in asymmetric hearing loss is related to spatial hearing: a PET H215O study

In asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), the normal pattern of contralateral hemispheric dominance for monaural stimulation is modified, with a shift towards the hemisphere ipsilateral to the better ear. The extent of this shift has been shown to relate to sound localization deficits. In this study, we examined whether cochlear implantation to treat postlingual AHL can restore the normal functional pattern of auditory cortical activity and whether this relates to improved sound localization. The auditory cortical activity was found to be lower in the AHL cochlear implanted (AHL-CI) participants. A cortical asymmetry index was calculated and showed that a normal contralateral dominance was restored in the AHL-CI patients for the nonimplanted ear, but not for the ear with the cochlear implant. It was found that the contralateral dominance for the nonimplanted ear strongly correlated with sound localization performance (rho = 0.8, P < 0.05). We conclude that the reorganization of binaural mechanisms in AHL-CI subjects reverses the abnormal lateralization pattern induced by the deafness, and that this leads to improved spatial hearing. Our results suggest that cochlear implantation enables the reconstruction of the cortical mechanisms of spatial selectivity needed for sound localization.

Effect of Contralateral Noise on Speech Intelligibility

In patients with strong asymmetric hearing loss, standard clinical practice involves testing speech intelligibility in the ear with the higher hearing threshold by simultaneously presenting noise to the other ear. However, psychoacoustic and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies indicate that this approach may be problematic as contralateral noise has a disruptive effect on task processing. Furthermore, fMRI studies have revealed that the effect of contralateral noise on brain activity depends on the lateralization of task processing. The effect of contralateral noise is stronger when task-relevant stimuli are presented ipsilaterally to the hemisphere that is processing the task. In the present study, we tested the effect of four different levels of contralateral noise on speech intelligibility using the Oldenburg sentence test (OLSA). Cortical lateralization of speech processing was assessed upfront by using a visual speech test with fMRI. Contralateral OLSA noise of 65 or 80 dB SPL significantly reduced word intelligibility irrespective of which ear the speech was presented to. In participants with left-lateralized speech processing, 50 dB SPL contralateral OLSA noise led to a significant reduction in speech intelligibility when speech was presented to the left ear, i.e. when speech was presented ipsilaterally to the hemisphere that is mainly processing speech. Thus, contralateral noise, as used in standard clinical practice, not only prevents listeners from using the information in the better-hearing ear but may also have the unintended effect of hampering central processing of speech.

Left hemispheric deficit in the sustained neuromagnetic response to periodic click trains in children with ASD

BACKGROUND

Deficits in perception and production of vocal pitch are often observed in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the neural basis of these deficits is unknown. In magnetoencephalogram (MEG), spectrally complex periodic sounds trigger two continuous neural responses-the auditory steady state response (ASSR) and the sustained field (SF). It has been shown that the SF in neurotypical individuals is associated with low-level analysis of pitch in the 'pitch processing center' of the Heschl's gyrus. Therefore, alternations in this auditory response may reflect atypical processing of vocal pitch. The SF, however, has never been studied in people with ASD.

METHODS

We used MEG and individual brain models to investigate the ASSR and SF evoked by monaural 40 Hz click trains in boys with ASD (N = 35) and neurotypical (NT) boys (N = 35) aged 7-12-years.

RESULTS

In agreement with the previous research in adults, the cortical sources of the SF in children were located in the left and right Heschl's gyri, anterolateral to those of the ASSR. In both groups, the SF and ASSR dominated in the right hemisphere and were higher in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulated ear. The ASSR increased with age in both NT and ASD children and did not differ between the groups. The SF amplitude did not significantly change between the ages of 7 and 12 years. It was moderately attenuated in both hemispheres and was markedly delayed and displaced in the left hemisphere in boys with ASD. The SF delay in participants with ASD was present irrespective of their intelligence level and severity of autism symptoms.

LIMITATIONS

We did not test the language abilities of our participants. Therefore, the link between SF and processing of vocal pitch in children with ASD remains speculative.

CONCLUSION

Children with ASD demonstrate atypical processing of spectrally complex periodic sound at the level of the core auditory cortex of the left-hemisphere. The observed neural deficit may contribute to speech perception difficulties experienced by children with ASD, including their poor perception and production of linguistic prosody.

Evidence of a functional reorganization in the auditory dorsal stream following unilateral hearing loss

Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) generates a disruption of binaural hearing mechanisms, which impairs sound localization and speech understanding in noisy environments. We conducted an original study using fMRI and psychoacoustic assessments to investigate the relationships between the extent of cortical reorganization across the auditory areas for UHL patients, the severity of unilateral hearing loss, and the deficit in binaural abilities. Twenty-eight volunteers (14 UHL patients) were recruited (twenty-two females and six males). The brain imaging analysis demonstrated that UHL induces a shift in aural dominance favoring the better ear, with a cortical reorganization located in the non-primary auditory areas, ipsilateral (same side) to the better ear. This reorganization is correlated not only to the hearing loss severity but also to spatial localization abilities. A regression analysis between brain activity and patient's performance clearly showed that the spatial hearing deficit was linked to a functional alteration of the posterior auditory areas known to process spatial hearing. Altogether, our study reveals that UHL alters the dorsal auditory stream, which is deleterious to spatial hearing.

Combined Brain-Perfusion SPECT and EEG Measurements Suggest Distinct Strategies for Speech Comprehension in CI Users With Higher and Lower Performance

Cochlear implantation constitutes a successful therapy of inner ear deafness, with the majority of patients showing good outcomes. There is, however, still some unexplained variability in outcomes with a number of cochlear-implant (CI) users, showing major limitations in speech comprehension. The current study used a multimodal diagnostic approach combining single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the mechanisms underlying speech processing in postlingually deafened CI users (N = 21). In one session, the participants performed a speech discrimination task, during which a 96-channel EEG was recorded and the perfusions marker 99mTc-HMPAO was injected intravenously. The SPECT scan was acquired 1.5 h after injection to measure the cortical activity during the speech task. The second session included a SPECT scan after injection without stimulation at rest. Analysis of EEG and SPECT data showed N400 and P600 event-related potentials (ERPs) particularly evoked by semantic violations in the sentences, and enhanced perfusion in a temporo-frontal network during task compared to rest, involving the auditory cortex bilaterally and Broca's area. Moreover, higher performance in testing for word recognition and verbal intelligence strongly correlated to the activation in this network during the speech task. However, comparing CI users with lower and higher speech intelligibility [median split with cutoff + 7.6 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the Göttinger sentence test] revealed for CI users with higher performance additional activations of parietal and occipital regions and for those with lower performance stronger activation of superior frontal areas. Furthermore, SPECT activity was tightly coupled with EEG and cognitive abilities, as indicated by correlations between (1) cortical activation and the amplitudes in EEG, N400 (temporal and occipital areas)/P600 (parietal and occipital areas) and (2) between cortical activation in left-sided temporal and bilateral occipital/parietal areas and working memory capacity. These results suggest the recruitment of a temporo-frontal network in CI users during speech processing and a close connection between ERP effects and cortical activation in CI users. The observed differences in speech-evoked cortical activation patterns for CI users with higher and lower speech intelligibility suggest distinct processing strategies during speech rehabilitation with CI.

Language beyond the language system: Dorsal visuospatial pathways support processing of demonstratives and spatial language during naturalistic fast fMRI

Spatial demonstratives are powerful linguistic tools used to establish joint attention. Identifying the meaning of semantically underspecified expressions like "this one" hinges on the integration of linguistic and visual cues, attentional orienting and pragmatic inference. This synergy between language and extralinguistic cognition is pivotal to language comprehension in general, but especially prominent in demonstratives. In this study, we aimed to elucidate which neural architectures enable this intertwining between language and extralinguistic cognition using a naturalistic fMRI paradigm. In our experiment, 28 participants listened to a specially crafted dialogical narrative with a controlled number of spatial demonstratives. A fast multiband-EPI acquisition sequence (TR = 388 m s) combined with finite impulse response (FIR) modelling of the hemodynamic response was used to capture signal changes at word-level resolution. We found that spatial demonstratives bilaterally engage a network of parietal areas, including the supramarginal gyrus, the angular gyrus, and precuneus, implicated in information integration and visuospatial processing. Moreover, demonstratives recruit frontal regions, including the right FEF, implicated in attentional orienting and reference frames shifts. Finally, using multivariate similarity analyses, we provide evidence for a general involvement of the dorsal ("where") stream in the processing of spatial expressions, as opposed to ventral pathways encoding object semantics. Overall, our results suggest that language processing relies on a distributed architecture, recruiting neural resources for perception, attention, and extra-linguistic aspects of cognition in a dynamic and context-dependent fashion.

The impact of task difficulty on the lateralization of processing in the human auditory cortex

Perception of complex auditory stimuli like speech requires the simultaneous processing of different fundamental acoustic parameters. The contribution of left and right auditory cortex (AC) in the processing of these parameters differs. In addition, activity within the AC can vary positively or negatively with task performance depending on the type of task. This might affect the allocation of processing to the left and right AC. Here we studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging the impact of task difficulty on the degree of involvement of the left and right AC in two tasks that have previously been shown to differ in hemispheric involvement: categorization and sequential comparison of the direction of frequency modulations (FM). Task difficulty was manipulated by changing the speed of modulation and by that the frequency range covered by the FM. To study the impact of task‐difficulty despite covarying the stimulus parameters, we utilized the contralateral noise procedure that allows comparing AC activation unconfounded by bottom‐up driven activity. The easiest conditions confirmed the known right AC involvement during the categorization task and the left AC involvement during the comparison task. The involvement of the right AC increased with increasing task difficulty for both tasks presumably due to the common task component of categorizing FM direction. The involvement of left AC varied with task difficulty depending on the task. Thus, task difficulty has a strong impact on lateralized processing in AC. This connection must be taken into account when interpreting future results on lateralized processing in the AC.

Effect of sequential comparison on active processing of sound duration

Previous studies on active duration processing on sounds showed opposing results regarding the predominant involvement of the left or right hemisphere. Duration of an acoustic event is normally judged relative to other sounds. This requires sequential comparison as auditory events unfold over time. We hypothesized that increasing the demand on sequential comparison in a task increases the involvement of the left auditory cortex. With the current fMRI study, we investigated the effect of sequential comparison in active duration discrimination by comparing a categorical with a comparative task. During the categorical task, the participant had to categorize the tones according to their duration (short vs long). During the comparative task, they had to decide for each tone whether its length matched the tone presented before. We used the contralateral noise procedure to reveal the degree of participation of the left and right auditory cortex during these tasks. We found that both tasks more strongly involve the left than the right auditory cortex. Furthermore, the left auditory cortex was more strongly involved during comparison than during categorization. Together with previous studies, this suggests that additional demand for sequential comparison during processing of different basic acoustic parameters leads to an increased recruitment of the left auditory cortex. In addition, the comparison task more strongly involved several brain areas outside the auditory cortex, which may also be related to the demand for additional cognitive resources as compared to the more efficient categorization of sounds. Asymmetric interaural generalization of learning gains in a speech-in-noise identification task

The pattern of generalization of learning gains to untrained conditions in adult human perceptual skill learning has been used as an effective behavioral probe for studying the functional organization of the learning system. Learning gains were previously reported to generalize symmetrically between the ears for tonal stimuli. However, given the open question concerning the specialization of the hemispheres in the processing of speech sounds, it is not clear whether symmetrical interaural generalization will follow training on such stimuli. Here the effect of monaural single-session training on the identification of consonant-vowel stimuli in noise was examined. Participants showed similar robust gains in performance at 24 h post-training in both trained ears. There was, however, an asymmetrical generalization of the learning gains from the trained to the untrained ear, with more transfer from the right-trained to the left-untrained ear than vice versa. Training and transfer gains were retained for both ears over an interval of several months, although for the untrained ear a brief exposure was necessary to relearn the task. These results provide first-time evidence for an asymmetry in interaural generalization for speech sounds following training and provide further support to the lateralization of speech sounds along the auditory system.

The processing of chimeric and dichotic emotional stimuli by connected and disconnected cerebral hemispheres

Hemispheric asymmetries have been widely explored in both the visual and the auditory domain, but little is known about hemispheric asymmetries in audio-visual integration. We compared the performance of a partially callosotomized patient, a total split-brain patient and a control group during the evaluation of the emotional valence of chimeric faces and dichotic syllables (an emotional syllable in one ear and white noise in the other ear) presented unimodally (only faces or only syllables) or bimodally (faces and syllables presented simultaneously). Stimuli could convey happy and sad expressions and participants were asked to evaluate the emotional content of each presentation, using a 5-point Likert scale (from very sad to very happy). In unimodal presentations, the partially callosotomized patient's judgments depended on the emotional valence of the stimuli processed by the right hemisphere, whereas those of the total split-brain patient showed the opposite lateralization; in these conditions, the control group did not show asymmetries. Moreover, in bimodal presentations, results provided support for the valence hypothesis (i.e., left asymmetry for positive emotions and vice versa) in both the control group and the partially callosotomized patient, whereas the total split-brain patient showed a tendency to evaluate the emotional content of the right hemiface even when asked to focus on the acoustic modality. We conclude that partial and total hemispheric disconnections reveal opposite patterns of hemispheric asymmetry in auditory, visual and audio-visual emotion processing. These results are discussed in the light of the right-hemisphere hypothesis and the valence hypothesis.

Enhanced activation of the left hemisphere promotes normative decision making

Previous studies have reported that enhanced activation of the left cerebral hemisphere reduces risky-choice, attribute, and goal-framing effects relative to enhanced activation of the right cerebral hemisphere. The present study sought to extend these findings and show that enhanced activation of the left hemisphere also reduces violations of other normative principles, besides the invariance principle. Participants completed ratio bias (Experiment 1, N = 296) and base rate neglect problems (Experiment 2, N = 145) under normal (control) viewing or with the right or left hemisphere primarily activated by imposing a unidirectional gaze. In Experiment 1 we found that enhanced left hemispheric activation reduced the ratio bias relative to normal viewing and a group experiencing enhanced right hemispheric activation. In Experiment 2 enhanced left hemispheric activation resulted in using base rates more than normal viewing, but not significantly more than enhanced right hemispheric activation. Results suggest that hemispheric asymmetries can affect higher-order cognitive processes, such as decision-making biases. Possible theoretical accounts are discussed as well as implications for dual-process theories.

Compensatory changes in cortical resource allocation in adults with hearing loss

Hearing loss has been linked to many types of cognitive decline in adults, including an association between hearing loss severity and dementia. However, it remains unclear whether cortical re-organization associated with hearing loss occurs in early stages of hearing decline and in early stages of auditory processing. In this study, we examined compensatory plasticity in adults with mild-moderate hearing loss using obligatory, passively-elicited, cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP). High-density EEG elicited by speech stimuli was recorded in adults with hearing loss and age-matched normal hearing controls. Latency, amplitude and source localization of the P1, N1, P2 components of the CAEP were analyzed. Adults with mild-moderate hearing loss showed increases in latency and amplitude of the P2 CAEP relative to control subjects. Current density reconstructions revealed decreased activation in temporal cortex and increased activation in frontal cortical areas for hearing-impaired listeners relative to normal hearing listeners. Participants' behavioral performance on a clinical test of speech perception in noise was significantly correlated with the increases in P2 latency. Our results indicate that changes in cortical resource allocation are apparent in early stages of adult hearing loss, and that these passively-elicited cortical changes are related to behavioral speech perception outcome.

Left auditory cortex is involved in pairwise comparisons of the direction of frequency modulated tones

Evaluating series of complex sounds like those in speech and music requires sequential comparisons to extract task-relevant relations between subsequent sounds. With the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we investigated whether sequential comparison of a specific acoustic feature within pairs of tones leads to a change in lateralized processing in the auditory cortex (AC) of humans. For this we used the active categorization of the direction (up vs. down) of slow frequency modulated (FM) tones. Several studies suggest that this task is mainly processed in the right AC. These studies, however, tested only the categorization of the FM direction of each individual tone. In the present study we ask the question whether the right lateralized processing changes when, in addition, the FM direction is compared within pairs of successive tones. For this we use an experimental approach involving contralateral noise presentation in order to explore the contributions made by the left and right AC in the completion of the auditory task. This method has already been applied to confirm the right-lateralized processing of the FM direction of individual tones. In the present study, the subjects were required to perform, in addition, a sequential comparison of the FM direction in pairs of tones. The results suggest a division of labor between the two hemispheres such that the FM direction of each individual tone is mainly processed in the right AC whereas the sequential comparison of this feature between tones in a pair is probably performed in the left AC.

Mathematical modeling of human glioma growth based on brain topological structures: study of two clinical cases

Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors and yet almost incurable due mainly to their great invasion capability. This represents a challenge to present clinical oncology. Here, we introduce a mathematical model aiming to improve tumor spreading capability definition. The model consists in a time dependent reaction-diffusion equation in a three-dimensional spatial domain that distinguishes between different brain topological structures. The model uses a series of digitized images from brain slices covering the whole human brain. The Talairach atlas included in the model describes brain structures at different levels. Also, the inclusion of the Brodmann areas allows prediction of the brain functions affected during tumor evolution and the estimation of correlated symptoms. The model is solved numerically using patient-specific parametrization and finite differences. Simulations consider an initial state with cellular proliferation alone (benign tumor), and an advanced state when infiltration starts (malign tumor). Survival time is estimated on the basis of tumor size and location. The model is used to predict tumor evolution in two clinical cases. In the first case, predictions show that real infiltrative areas are underestimated by current diagnostic imaging. In the second case, tumor spreading predictions were shown to be more accurate than those derived from previous models in the literature. Our results suggest that the inclusion of differential migration in glioma growth models constitutes another step towards a better prediction of tumor infiltration at the moment of surgical or radiosurgical target definition. Also, the addition of physiological/psychological considerations to classical anatomical models will provide a better and integral understanding of the patient disease at the moment of deciding therapeutic options, taking into account not only survival but also life quality.

Hemispheric differences in the effects of context on vowel perception

Listeners perceive speech sounds relative to context. Contextual influences might differ over hemispheres if different types of auditory processing are lateralized. Hemispheric differences in contextual influences on vowel perception were investigated by presenting speech targets and both speech and non-speech contexts to listeners' right or left ears (contexts and targets either to the same or to opposite ears). Listeners performed a discrimination task. Vowel perception was influenced by acoustic properties of the context signals. The strength of this influence depended on laterality of target presentation, and on the speech/non-speech status of the context signal. We conclude that contrastive contextual influences on vowel perception are stronger when targets are processed predominately by the right hemisphere. In the left hemisphere, contrastive effects are smaller and largely restricted to speech contexts.

Lateralized goal framing: how selective presentation impacts message effectiveness

We tested whether framing a message as a gain or loss would alter its effectiveness by using a dichotic listening procedure to selectively present a health related message to the left or right hemisphere. A significant goal framing effect (losses > gains) was found when right, but not left, hemisphere processing was initially enhanced. The results support the position that the contextual processing style of the right hemisphere is especially sensitive to the associative implications of the frame. We discussed the implications of these findings for goal framing research, and the valence hypothesis. We also discussed how these findings converge with prior valence framing research and how they can be of potential use to health care providers.

Functional reorganization of the auditory pathways following late callosotomy

Injuries at various levels of the auditory system have been shown to lead to functional reorganization of the auditory pathways. In particular, it has recently been shown that such reorganization can occur in callosal agenesis. The pattern of cortical activity following callosotomy is however still unknown, but behavioral results suggest that it could be significantly different from that observed in callosal agenesis. We aimed to confirm this hypothesis by investigating fMRI responses to complex sounds presented binaurally and monaurally in a callosotomized patient. In the binaural condition, the callosotomized subject showed patterns of auditory cortical activation that were similar to those of neurologically intact individuals. However, in both monaural conditions, the callosotomized individual showed a significant increase of the asymmetries favoring the contralateral pathways. Such patterns of cortical responses are only partially consistent with the results obtained from callosal agenesis subjects using the exact same procedure. Indeed, the latter show differences compared with normals in both binaural and monaural conditions. These findings provide neurological evidence that callosotomy could lead to distinctive functional reorganization of the human auditory pathways.

O Efeito da lateralidade em teste de fala no ruído em normo-ouvintes

OBJETIVO: verificar o efeito da lateralidade em teste monoaural, na presença de ruído competitivo, que utiliza sentenças como estímulo em indivíduos normo-ouvintes. MÉTODO: 81 indivíduos normo-ouvintes, com idades entre 18 e 44 anos, divididos em 2 grupos de acordo com a lateralidade - 45 indivíduos destros e 36 canhotos -, foram avaliados por meio do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português (LSP), e obtida a relação sinal-ruído (S/R) para cada orelha. RESULTADOS: os valores médios obtidos para as relações S/R na orelha direita, para os indivíduos destros e canhotos, foram, respectivamente, -6,5 dB e -4,5 dB. Para a orelha esquerda, foram -7,0 dB e -7,5 dB. As orelhas direitas apresentaram resultados significantemente piores, tanto nos indivíduos destros, como nos canhotos. No entanto a orelha direita dos canhotos foi sensivelmente pior em comparação a dos destros. CONCLUSÃO: existe diferença quanto ao reconhecimento de fala, na presença de ruído competitivo, em indivíduos destros e canhotos. A orelha direita apresentou pior desempenho em ambos os grupos, sendo que esse resultado negativo é mais acentuado nos canhotos.

Factor structure of paediatric timed motor examination and its relationship with IQ

Brain systems supporting higher cognitive and motor control develop in a parallel manner, dependent on functional integrity and maturation of related regions, suggesting neighbouring neural circuitry. Concurrent examination of motor and cognitive control can provide a window into neurological development. However, identification of performance-based measures that do not correlate with IQ has been a challenge. Method Timed motor performance from the Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs and IQ were analysed in 136 children aged 6 to 16 (mean age 10y 2.6mo, SD 2y 6.4mo; 98 female, 38 male) attending an outpatient neuropsychology clinic and 136 right-handed comparison individuals aged 6 to 16 (mean age 10y 3.1mo, SD 2y 6.1mo; 98 female, 38 male). Timed activities--three repetitive movements (toe tapping, hand patting, finger tapping) and three sequenced movements (heel-toe tap, hand pronate/supinate, finger sequencing) each performed on the right and left--were included in exploratory factor analyses. Results Among comparison individuals, factor analysis yielded two factors--repetitive and sequenced movements--with the sequenced factor significantly predictive of Verbal IQ (VIQ) (DeltaR(2)=0.018, p=0.019), but not the repetitive factor (DeltaR(2)=0.004, p=0.39). Factor analysis within the clinical group yielded two similar factors (repetitive and sequenced), both significantly predictive of VIQ, (DeltaR(2)=0.028, p=0.015; DeltaR(2)=0.046, p=0.002 respectively). Interpretation Among typical children, repetitive timed tasks may be independent of IQ; however, sequenced tasks share more variance, implying shared neural substrates. Among neurologically vulnerable populations, however, both sequenced and repetitive movements covary with IQ, suggesting that repetitive speed is more indicative of underlying neurological integrity.

The effects of background noise on dichotic listening to consonant-vowel syllables: An fMRI study

The present fMRI study attempts to identify brain areas that may underlie the effect of different background noises on functional brain asymmetry in a dichotic listening task. Previous studies have shown that the prominent right ear advantage in dichotic listening to consonant-vowel syllables is affected by background noise. To explore the underlying neuronal processes, haemodynamic brain responses using fMRI were recorded while participants performed the dichotic listening task in two different noisy backgrounds (conversational "babble" and traffic noise). The behavioural results showed a reduction of the right ear advantage in the background noise conditions, especially in the traffic noise condition. The behavioural results are discussed in terms of alertness-attentional mechanisms. The effects of background noise on brain activation involved significant activations in a speech-processing network. Specifically the changes in activations in the peri-Sylvian region of the superior temporal gyrus and in the temporo-parietal junction part in the left hemisphere, as well as in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus area in the right hemisphere may mirror the effects of noise on behavioural performance. The effects of noise on brain activation are discussed with regard to pre-activation mechanisms.
