Abstract
Semantic Variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (svPPA) has often been considered as a loss of knowledge stored in semantic memory, but might also be due to a general disruption of mechanisms allowing the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of semantic memories. In order to assess any parallelism in svPPA patients between loss of semantic knowledge and inability to acquire new semantic information, we administered a battery of semantic learning tasks to healthy individuals and svPPA patients, where they were requested to learn new conceptual representations and new word forms, and to associate the former with the latter. A strong relation was found between loss of semantic knowledge and disruption of semantic learning: (a) patients with severe svPPA had the lowest scores in the semantic learning tasks; (b) significant correlations were found between scores obtained in semantic learning tasks and scores obtained in semantic memory disorders in svPPA patients.

Abstract
Allochiria refers to the mislocation of stimuli to the corresponding position on the opposite side of the body or hemispace. It is most often, although not exclusively, reported in the tactile modality and typically in association with unilateral neglect. We describe a patient presenting with a 2-year history of topographical disorientation without other cognitive complaints. We conducted a systematic exploration of his topographical problems to identify their cognitive substrate. Standard neuropsychological examination revealed no abnormalities. Notably, he performed well on perceptual, spatial, and constructional tasks. No signs of neglect were elicited. A tailored battery of tests was administered, involving road maps and landmarks, and designed to replicate the situations in which he experienced symptoms. The experimental tests showed no evidence of topographical agnosia or amnesia for landmarks and their spatial relationships and no hemispatial neglect. Nevertheless, the patient exhibited a systematic tendency to translocate topographical landmarks sited on the left to the right side. The phenomenon, consistent with representational allochiria, occurred exclusively for topographical landmarks, and was present along both personally familiar and new learned routes. Over the next two years more widespread visuoperceptual and spatial deficits emerged, with Balint and Gerstmann syndromes. Functional imaging revealed hypoperfusion of the occipito-parietal regions and amyloid PET the presence of amyloid plaques. A diagnosis was made of posterior cortical atrophy, the visual variant of Alzheimer's Disease. To our knowledge this is the first case of topographical disorientation presenting with selective representational allochiria and the first report of allochiria as an early sign of posterior cortical atrophy. The case sheds light on the cognitive basis of allochiria and on a puzzling clinical presentation of neurodegenerative brain disease.

Abstract
The mechanisms and brain regions underlying error monitoring in complex action are poorly understood, yet errors and impaired error correction in these tasks are hallmarks of apraxia, a common disorder associated with left hemisphere stroke. Accounts of monitoring of language posit an internal route by which production planning or competition between candidate representations provide predictive signals that monitoring is required to prevent error, and an external route in which output is monitored using the comprehension system. Abnormal reliance on the external route has been associated with damage to brain regions critical for sensory-motor transformation and a pattern of gradual error 'clean-up' called conduite d'approche (CD). Action pantomime data from 67 participants with left hemisphere stroke were consistent with versions of internal route theories positing that competition signals monitoring requirements. Support Vector Regression Lesion Symptom Mapping (SVR-LSM) showed that lesions in the inferior parietal, posterior temporal, and arcuate fasciculus/superior longitudinal fasciculus predicted action conduite d'approche, overlapping the regions previously observed in the language domain. A second experiment with 12 patients who produced substantial action CD assessed whether factors impacting the internal route (action production ability, competition) versus external route (vision of produced actions, action comprehension) influenced correction attempts. In these 'high CD' patients, vision of produced actions and integrity of gesture comprehension interacted to determine successful error correction, supporting external route theories. Viewed together, these and other data suggest that skilled actions are monitored both by an internal route in which conflict aids in detection and correction of errors during production planning, and an external route that detects mismatches between produced actions and stored knowledge of action appearance. The parallels between language and action monitoring mechanisms and neuroanatomical networks pave the way for further exploration of common and distinct processes across these domains.

Abstract
Apraxia following left hemisphere stroke disrupts pantomimed tool use (PTU), a task that requires the integrity of a number of cognitive and motor processes. Although previous studies have identified that apraxics have deficits in (1) the integrity of/access to stored tool-use gesture representations, (2) deficits in intrinsic (body-based) coordinate control, and (3) abnormal reliance on visual feedback, no study to date has simultaneously tested the relative contribution of these three deficits to poor PTU performance. In this study we assessed 38 chronic left hemisphere stroke survivors on tests of PTU and the 3 component processes. We then attempted to predict PTU with the component scores using hierarchical regression to control for overall stroke severity and the possibility of correlated component scores. Results showed that over half of the variability in PTU was predictable, with the strongest independent predictor being a test of intrinsic coordinate control without visual feedback. A test of the integrity of/access to stored representations also predicted PTU. These results confirm and extend previous claims that conceptual- and production-related factors affect PTU, even after considering that deficits in both factors are commonly observed to varying degrees in apraxic patients.

Abstract
The issue of whether arithmetic knowledge is invariably spared or impaired in semantic dementia is still under debate. The corpus of data mainly relies on single case-report descriptions. Relative to this issue, only one paper, by Julien et al. (Neuropsychologia 44(10): 2732-2744, 2008) explored in a systematic way arithmetic knowledge in an SD patient group. The present study is aimed to explore calculation in a group of eight patients affected by early semantic dementia (SD) using a neuropsychological battery devised to examine arithmetic knowledge (arithmetic signs recognition, arithmetic facts and written and mental calculation). These SD patients showed problems in recognition of arithmetic signs, difficulty in arithmetic facts and procedural errors in calculation. Still, the pattern of answers that the SD patients showed was not completely homogeneous and some individual variations were present. In contrast with most literature, the present study provides evidence for impairment of arithmetic knowledge in patients with early semantic dementia and contributes to the recent evidence that arithmetic knowledge cannot be considered an independent domain within the semantic system.

Abstract
The present study aims to investigate the potential clinical utility of applause sign in Alzheimer's disease (AD), exploring whether it is consequent to the severity of cognitive impairment or to specific neuropsychological profiles. According to the current debate, the role of apraxia is also investigated. A total of 105 patients with AD were enrolled and classified on the basis of the severity of the disease: 37 had mild AD, 38 moderate AD, and 30 severe AD. They were compared to 42 normal subjects. The applause sign was detected using the three clap test. All patients underwent a broad neuropsychological examination and 95 AD patients were tested for the presence of apraxia with a detailed praxis battery. Applause sign was present in all AD patient groups, which showed a significant difference with respect to normal controls, but not between each other. No significant difference was reported between apraxic and non-apraxic patients. Applause sign correlated with measures of frontal lobe dysfunction. No correlations were found between the applause sign and other cognitive functions examined.
