Common principles in the lateralisation of auditory cortex structure and function for vocal communication in primates and rodents

This review summarises recent findings on the lateralisation of communicative sound processing in the auditory cortex (AC) of humans, non-human primates, and rodents. Functional imaging in humans has demonstrated a left hemispheric preference for some acoustic features of speech, but it is unclear to which degree this is caused by bottom-up acoustic feature selectivity or top-down modulation from language areas. Although non-human primates show a less pronounced functional lateralisation in AC, the properties of AC fields and behavioral asymmetries are qualitatively similar. Rodent studies demonstrate microstructural circuits that might underlie bottom-up acoustic feature selectivity in both hemispheres. Functionally, the left AC in the mouse appears to be specifically tuned to communication calls, whereas the right AC may have a more 'generalist' role. Rodents also show anatomical AC lateralisation, such as differences in size and connectivity. Several of these functional and anatomical characteristics are also lateralized in human AC. Thus, complex vocal communication processing shares common features among rodents and primates. We argue that a synthesis of results from humans, non-human primates, and rodents is necessary to identify the neural circuitry of vocal communication processing. However, data from different species and methods are often difficult to compare. Recent advances may enable better integration of methods across species. Efforts to standardise data formats and analysis tools would benefit comparative research and enable synergies between psychological and biological research in the area of vocal communication processing.

EEG and behavioral correlates of attentional processing while walking and navigating naturalistic environments

The capacity to regulate one's attention in accordance with fluctuating task demands and environmental contexts is an essential feature of adaptive behavior. Although the electrophysiological correlates of attentional processing have been extensively studied in the laboratory, relatively little is known about the way they unfold under more variable, ecologically-valid conditions. Accordingly, this study employed a 'real-world' EEG design to investigate how attentional processing varies under increasing cognitive, motor, and environmental demands. Forty-four participants were exposed to an auditory oddball task while (1) sitting in a quiet room inside the lab, (2) walking around a sports field, and (3) wayfinding across a university campus. In each condition, participants were instructed to either count or ignore oddball stimuli. While behavioral performance was similar across the lab and field conditions, oddball count accuracy was significantly reduced in the campus condition. Moreover, event-related potential components (mismatch negativity and P3) elicited in both 'real-world' settings differed significantly from those obtained under laboratory conditions. These findings demonstrate the impact of environmental factors on attentional processing during simultaneously-performed motor and cognitive tasks, highlighting the value of incorporating dynamic and unpredictable contexts within naturalistic designs.

The effects of sleep on objective measures of gap detection using a time-efficient multi-deviant paradigm

Auditory temporal resolution, measured through gap detection, is critical for the perception of speech. A time-efficient multi-deviant paradigm has previously been developed for gap detection. The purpose of the present study was to determine if this multi-deviant paradigm could be used for gap detection during NREM sleep. ERPs were recorded in 10 young adults while awake and during the first two hours of NREM sleep. A multi-deviant paradigm was employed with six different deviants varying in gap duration, ranging from 2 to 40 ms. During waking, a DRN was observed for the 10, 20, 30 and 40 ms gaps. The DRN was absent during sleep. A P2 was present in NREM for the 20, 30 and 40 ms gaps followed by a P3a to the 30 and 40 ms gaps. An N350 was observed following the 10, 20, 30 and 40 ms gaps. Previous studies have reported significant ERPs to gaps having shorter durations than the present study. The multi-deviant paradigm may not be suitable for the determination of gap threshold during sleep. Nevertheless, it provides an exquisite means to determine perceptibility and the extent of processing of longer duration, supra-threshold gaps during sleep.

Acoustics versus linguistics? Context is Part and Parcel to lateralized processing of the parts and parcels of speech

The purpose of this review is to provide an accessible exploration of key considerations of lateralization in speech and non-speech perception using clear and defined language. From these considerations, the primary arguments for each side of the linguistics versus acoustics debate are outlined and explored in context of emerging integrative theories. This theoretical approach entails a perspective that linguistic and acoustic features differentially contribute to leftward bias, depending on the given context. Such contextual factors include stimulus parameters and variables of stimulus presentation (e.g., noise/silence and monaural/binaural) and variances in individuals (sex, handedness, age, and behavioural ability). Discussion of these factors and their interaction is also aimed towards providing an outline of variables that require consideration when developing and reviewing methodology of acoustic and linguistic processing laterality studies. Thus, there are three primary aims in the present paper: (1) to provide the reader with key theoretical perspectives from the acoustics/linguistics debate and a synthesis of the two viewpoints, (2) to highlight key caveats for generalizing findings regarding predominant models of speech laterality, and (3) to provide a practical guide for methodological control using predominant behavioural measures (i.e., gap detection and dichotic listening tasks) and/or neurophysiological measures (i.e., mismatch negativity) of speech laterality.

Mismatch Negativity and Ear Laterality in Alzheimer's Disease and in Mild Cognitive Impairment

BACKGROUND

Cortical auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were studied in order to measure mismatch negativity (MMN). Three groups of subjects were studied: patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 32), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 44), and subjective memory complaints without cognitive decline (SMC, n = 27). A bottom up strategy was applied, and the right and left ears were stimulated monaurally.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate MMN in AD and MCI, and in a clinical reference group.

METHODS

ERPs were carried out with 500 tone pulses at 80 dBnHL. Each sequence included 80% standard tones (500 Hz) (f), and 20% deviant tones (1000 Hz) (r). MMN measurements were carried out by comparing the amplitudes of (f) and (r) recordings and to calculate the amplitude difference in μV for each group. The right and the left ears were analyzed separately.

RESULTS

A left ear advantage (LEA) of MMN amplitude was demonstrated in the two groups with better cognition (the MCI and the SMC groups), but not in the AD group.

DISCUSSION

The absence of MMN asymmetry in the AD group is possibly caused by a dysfunction to apprehend changes of tonal stimuli.

Modulation of pre-attentive spectro-temporal feature processing in the human auditory system by HD-tDCS

The present study examined the functional lateralization of the human auditory cortex (AC) for pre-attentive spectro-temporal feature processing. By using high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), we systematically modulated neuronal activity of the bilateral AC. We assessed the influence of anodal and cathodal HD-tDCS delivered over the left or right AC on auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) in response to temporal as well as spectral deviants in 12 healthy subjects. The results showed that MMN to temporal deviants was significantly enhanced by anodal HD-tDCS applied over the left AC only. Our data indicate a left hemispheric dominance for the pre-attentive processing of low-level temporal information.

Differential auditory-oculomotor interactions in patients with right vs. left sided subjective tinnitus: a saccade study

Subjective tinnitus (ST) is a frequent but poorly understood medical condition. Recent studies demonstrated abnormalities in several types of eye movements (smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, fixation, and vergence) in ST patients. The present study investigates horizontal and vertical saccades in patients with tinnitus lateralized predominantly to the left or to the right side. Compared to left sided ST, tinnitus perceived on the right side impaired almost all the parameters of saccades (latency, amplitude, velocity, etc.) and noticeably the upward saccades. Relative to controls, saccades from both groups were more dysmetric and were characterized by increased saccade disconjugacy (i.e., poor binocular coordination). Although the precise mechanisms linking ST and saccadic control remain unexplained, these data suggest that ST can lead to detrimental auditory, visuomotor, and perhaps vestibular interactions.
