Abstract
Medicines from natural products can not only treat neurodegenerative diseases but also improve the cognitive dysfunction caused by treatments with western medicines. This study reviews the literature related to the regulation of mitochondrial participation in cognitive function by natural products. In this study, we focused on English articles in PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, from 15 October 2017, to 15 October 2022. Fourteen studies that followed the inclusion criteria were integrated, analyzed, and summarized. Several studies have shown that natural products can improve or reduce cognitive dysfunction by ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction. These results suggest that natural products may serve as new therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a tangle-shaped accumulation of beta-amyloid peptide fragments and Tau protein in brain neurons. The pathophysiological mechanism involves the presence of Aβ-amyloid peptide, Tau protein, oxidative stress, and an exacerbated neuro-inflammatory response. This review aims to offer an updated compendium of the most recent and promising advances in AD treatment through the administration of phytochemicals. The literature survey was carried out by electronic search in the following specialized databases PubMed/Medline, Embase, TRIP database, Google Scholar, Wiley, and Web of Science regarding published works that included molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways targeted by phytochemicals in various experimental models of Alzheimer’s disease in vitro and in vivo. The results of the studies showed that the use of phytochemicals against AD has gained relevance due to their antioxidant, anti-neuroinflammatory, anti-amyloid, and anti-hyperphosphorylation properties of Tau protein. Some bioactive compounds from plants have been shown to have the ability to prevent and stop the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Abstract
Sepsis-associated encephalopathy is a common neurological complication of sepsis. Despite advances in pathological and diagnostic investigations, its treatment remains a major challenge. In sepsis-associated encephalopathy, neuroinflammatory overactivation and mitochondrial damage are thought to contribute to cognitive and behavioral impairments. In this study, we found that administration of (−)-Epicatechin, a dietary flavonoid of the flavan-3-ol subgroup, improves memory deficits and behavior performance by ameliorating neuroinflammation, regulating mitochondria function, enhancing synaptic plasticity, and reducing neuronal loss in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide-induced sepsis. We further show that the AMPK signaling pathway might be among the mechanisms involved in the beneficial memory effects. Our data demonstrated the potential of (−)-Epicatechin as a new drug candidate for the treatment of sepsis-associated cognitive impairment by targeting AMPK.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and associated dementia typically originate with altered protein folding and aggregation of their β structures in the neurons. This self-aggregation leads to glial activation in the brain, causing neuroinflammation and leads to neuronal death. According to statistics provided by WHO, there are around 50 million people with dementia worldwide and every year, 10 million more cases are projected to increase. Also, around 5-8 percentage of people who are aged above 60 globally has dementia or associated disorders. Over 82 million in 2030 and 152 in 2050 are expected to have dementia. Most of these patients fall into low-middle-income countries which makes it even more essential to find an affordable and effective treatment method. Polyphenols of different origin are studied for their potential role as anti-neuro-inflammatory molecules. This review would summarize recent advances in three widely researched dietary polyphenols projected as potential therapeutic agents for disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. They are Resveratrol, Catechins, and Tannins. The review would discuss the recent advances and challenges in using these polyphenols using specific examples as potential therapeutic agents against neuroinflammation associated disorders. Abstract
(-)-Epicatechin (EC) is a flavanol easily obtained through the diet and is present in tea, cocoa, vegetables, fruits, and cereals. Recent studies have shown that EC protects human health and exhibits prominent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, enhances muscle performance, improves symptoms of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, prevents diabetes, and protects the nervous system. With the development of modern medical and biotechnology research, the mechanisms of action associated with EC toward various chronic diseases are becoming more apparent, and the pharmacological development and utilization of EC has been increasingly clarified. Currently, there is no comprehensive systematic introduction to the effects of EC and its mechanisms of action. This review presents the latest research progress and the role of EC in the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases and its protective health effects and provides a theoretical basis for future research on EC.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder associated with the aggregation of the amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) into large oligomers and fibrils that damage healthy brain cells. The predominant peptide fragments in the plaques are mainly formed by the Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42 peptides, albeit the eleven-residue Aβ25-35 segment is largely used in biological studies because it retains the neurotoxic properties of the longer Aβ peptides. Recent studies indicate that treatment with therapeutic steroid hormones reduces the progress of the disease in AD models. Particularly, treatment with 17β-aminoestrogens (AEs) has shown a significant alleviation of the AD development by inhibiting oxidative stress and neuronal death. Yet, the mechanism by which the AE molecules exhibit their beneficial effects remains speculative. To shed light into the molecular mechanism of inhibition of the AD development by AEs, we investigated the possibility of direct interaction with the Aβ25-35 peptide. First, we calculate various interacting electronic properties of three AE derivatives as follows: prolame, butolame, and pentolame by performing DFT calculations. To account for the polymorphic nature of the Aβ aggregates, we considered four different Aβ25-35 systems extracted from AD relevant fibril structures. From the calculation of different electron density properties, specific interacting loci were identified that guided the construction and optimization of various complexes. Interestingly, the results suggest a similar inhibitory mechanism based on the direct interaction between the AEs and the M35 residue that seems to be general and independent of the polymorphic properties of the Aβ aggregates. Our analysis of the complex formation provides a structural framework for understanding the AE therapeutic properties in the molecular inhibitory mechanism of Aβ aggregation.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by dementia and the aggregation of the amyloid beta peptide (Aβ). Aβ25-35 is the most neurotoxic sequence, whose mechanism is associated with the neuronal death in the Cornu Ammonis 1 (CA1) region of the hippocampus (Hp) and cognitive damage. Likewise, there are mechanisms of neuronal survival regulated by heat shock proteins (HSPs). Studies indicate that pharmacological treatment with flavonoids reduces the prevalence of AD, particularly epicatechin (EC), which shows better antioxidant activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of EC on neurotoxicity that causes Aβ25-35 at the level of spatial memory as well as the relationship with immunoreactivity of HSPs in the CA1 region of the Hp of rats. Our results show that EC treatment reduces the deterioration of spatial memory induced by the Aβ25-35, in addition to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the Hp of the animals treated with EC + Aβ25-35. Likewise, the immunoreactivity to HSP-60, -70, and -90 is lower in the EC + Aβ25-35 group compared to the Aβ25-35 group, which coincides with a decrease of dead neurons in the CA1 region of the Hp. Our results suggest that EC reduces the neurotoxicity induced by Aβ25-35, as well as the HSP-60, -70, and -90 immunoreactivity and neuronal death in the CA1 region of the Hp of rats injected with Aβ25-35, which favors an improvement in the function of spatial memory.

Abstract
In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds in baobab (Adansonia digitata) seeds was optimised using RSM. Based on the single factor experiment results, the effect of four parameters, extraction time (10-20 min), temperature (40-60 °C), % amplitude (30-50) and solvent to solid ratio (20-30, mL/g) on Total Flavonoids Content (TFC) were investigated and optimised using a central composite design (CCD). The predicted optimal conditions with the highest desirably (0.874) were: 20 min, 30% amplitude, 60 °C temperature and 30 mL/g solvent to solid ratio. Under these conditions, the experimental TFC value (1633.84 ± 10.75 mg RE/100 g DW) was highly correlated with the predicted value (1631.77 mg RE/100 g DW). Moreover, a comparative study confirmed that the recovery of TFC, TPC and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP) was significantly higher in UAE than maceration and Heat Assisted Extraction (HAE) extraction methods in addition to a shorter extraction time. HPLC analysis of the UAE optimised sample extract revealed the presence of 10 phenolic compounds with the highest concentration of D-(+) catechin (87.18 ± 14.57 µg/g). This study is the first attempt to optimise UAE parameters for the extraction of phenolic compounds in baobab seeds.

Chemical characterization, antioxidant, genotoxic and in vitro cytotoxic activity assessment of Juniperus communis var. saxatilis. Food Chem Toxicol 2017; 112:118-125. Abstract
Chemical composition and antioxidative, genotoxic and cytotoxic potential of essential oil (EO) and post-distillation waste (PDW) of Serbian Juniperus communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. was studied in human lung carcinoma (A549) and normal lung fibroblast (MRC-5) cells. GC-MS analysis identified 93.95% of total EO content and determined α-pinen as a dominant component (23.61%). LC-MS/MS analysis of PDW pointed at rutin (12.2 mg g-1) and quinic acid (11.1 mg g-1) as the most abundant. Antioxidativity of PDW was strong in DPPH (IC50 was 5.27 μg mL-1), and moderate in TBA and FRAP assays. Both substances were more cytotoxic to A549 than to MRC-5 cells. Obtained IC50 values were 69.4 μg mL-1 and 120 μg mL-1 for EO, and 1.27 mg mL-1 and 2.86 mg mL-1 for PDW, respectively. PDW was genotoxic (0.3 mg mL-1 and 1 mg mL-1 in A549 and MRC-5 cells, respectively) and induced apoptosis and arrested cell cycle in G2/M phase in A549 cells (0.3 mg mL-1). In mixtures with doxorubicin cytotoxicity of EO and PDW increased, and combination index values (0.12-0.18) revealed clear synergistic effect, stronger in cancer cells. This indicates that J. communis var. saxatilis could decrease the chemotherapeutic doses of doxorubicin, potentially reducing its side effects.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a serious public health problem, which can promote neuronal alterations in cognitive regions related to learning and memory processes, such as the hippocampus. However, up to now there has been information of a regional segregation of this damage. In this study, we evaluate the MS effect on the neuronal morphology of the hippocampus. Our results demonstrate that 90days of a high-calorie diet alters the metabolic energy markers causing the MS and causes memory impairments, evaluated by the recognition of novel objects test (NORT). In addition, MS animals showed significant differences in dendritic order, total dendritic length and density of dendritic spines in CA1, CA3 and the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampal area, compared with rats fed with a normocaloric diet (vehicle group). Furthermore, the immunoreactivity to synaptophysin (Syp) decreased in the hippocampus of the MS animals compared to the vehicle group. These results indicate that metabolic alterations induced by the MS affect hippocampal plasticity and hippocampal dependent memory processes.
