Abstract
Background/Objectives: Changes in muscle mass and bone density are common in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) offers precise, non-invasive insights into a patient's physical condition before autologous stem cell transplantation (autoHSCT). This study examines how pre-transplant body composition impacts treatment outcomes and early complications in MM patients undergoing autoHSCT. Methods: This study is a single-center, retrospective analysis of patients with MM who were treated with first or second autoHSCT and underwent DXA pre-transplant between 11 August 2019 and 12 June 2024. Results: We conducted a study of pre-transplant body composition in 127 patients with MM. Among them, 108 (85%) qualified for first autoHSCT, while 19 (15%) qualified for a second. The median age of the patients was 64 years (range 50-73). In the Cox proportional hazards regression conducted in the group of women, Total Body %Fat was a statistically significant predictor for progression-free survival (PFS) (HR = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.01,0.6, p = 0.0157). In the Mann-Whitney U test conducted on males, Lean Mass/Height2 and Appen. Lean Height2 were statistically significant predictors of early infections after autoHSCT (Z = 1.98, p = 0.0473 and Z = 2.32, p = 0.0204, respectively). In males, Fat Mass/Height2 was a significant predictor of non-infectious toxicity related to treatment (Z = -1.98, p = 0.0476). Conclusions: In women, higher levels of adipose tissue initially appear to exert a protective effect; however, this benefit diminishes over time, with greater fat mass eventually correlating with an increased risk of disease progression. In men, muscle mass has been identified as a significant predictor of early infection risk post-autoHSCT. Furthermore, our findings indicate that an increased amount of adipose tissue in men is statistically associated with a higher risk of non-infectious treatment-related toxicity. These conclusions highlight the critical need for further investigation into the role of body composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The newly released Asian Working Group for Cachexia (AWGC) criteria share similar diagnostic items with the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. This study aims to compare the AWGC cachexia and GLIM malnutrition in patients with gastric cancer and investigate whether one diagnosis continues to be a prognostic factor in individuals diagnosed with the other condition. METHODS Data of patients who underwent radical gastrectomy for gastric adenocarcinoma were prospectively collected from 2013 to 2019. The AWGC and GLIM criteria were applied to diagnosis cachexia and malnutrition, respectively. Univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox regression were used to verify the effect of relevant factors on postoperative complications and overall survival. RESULTS A total of 1420 patients were included, among whom 174 (12.3 %) were diagnosed with AWGC-cachexia alone, 85 (6.0 %) were diagnosed with GLIM-malnutrition alone, and 324 (22.8 %) had both AWGC-cachexia and GLIM-malnutrition. Both AWGC-cachexia and GLIM-malnutrition were independent risk factors for complications and overall survival. When they coexisted, the odds ratios (OR) and hazard ratios (HR) tended to be higher. In the AWGC-cachexia subset, GLIM-malnutrition remained an independent risk factor (HR = 1.544, 95 % CI = 1.098-2.171, P = 0.012) for overall survival after the adjustment of confounding factors. Similarly, in the GLIM-malnutrition subset, AWGC-cachexia remained an independent risk factor for overall survival (HR = 1.697, 95 % CI = 1.087-2.650, P = 0.020). Patients with both cachexia and malnutrition had the worst overall survival. CONCLUSION AWGC-cachexia and GLIM-malnutrition criteria were two non-redundancy tools in reflecting mortality risk in preoperative nutritional assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Loss of muscle mass (MM) is common in advanced stages of cancer, with an impact on worsening quality of life (QoL). In the current study the relationship of a previously proposed simple grade system to assess MM phenotypes with QoL was investigated to strengthen its clinical significance. AIM To verify whether the MM phenotypes, which were evaluated by using a grading system, are associated with the quality of life (QoL) of patients with incurable cancer. METHODS Secondary data from a cohort of patients with incurable cancer in palliative care were analyzed. The grade system considers measurements of the muscle area arm and handgrip strength. Based on these measurements, patients are classified as probably non-sarcopenic (NSarc), probably sarcopenic (PSarc), and sarcopenic (Sarc). The outcome measure was QoL domains assessed by the EORTC QoL Questionnaire Core-15. Logistic regression models were used to verify the association of the domains of QoL with the MM phenotypes. RESULTS A total of 770 patients were included, median age of 62 years and 56.6% females. The PSarc group had significantly worse scores in the QoL domains when compared to the NSarc group (physical p = 0.001, emotional p = 0.018, fatigue p < 0.001, nausea p = 0.017, insomnia p = 0.001, appetite loss p = 0.002, and global health p = 0.043). Adjusted logistic regression analysis showed an increased risk of worse QoL in the PSarc and Sarc, when compared to NSarc, respectively (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI]): physical (OR: 2.54, CI: 1.78-3.62 and OR: 7.18, CI: 4.24-12.17), emotional (OR: 1.61, CI: 1.15-2.24 and OR: 1.49, CI: 1.01-2.20), fatigue (OR: 1.89, CI: 1.35-2.64 and OR: 1.83, CI: 1.23-2.71), insomnia (OR: 2.01, CI: 1.43-2.83 and OR: 3.11, CI: 2.04-4.75), while appetite loss domain was associated with the PSarc (OR: 1.40, CI: 1.02-1.96), together with global health in the Sarc group (OR: 1.56, CI: 1.06-2.29). CONCLUSION The severity of the MM phenotype was associated with a worse QoL domains. Our results highlight the importance of MM preserving to affecting QoL status. The grading system can be useful for predicting the QoL in those patients, and its usefulness can potentially impact clinical and therapeutic decision-making.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore the possible association between low skeletal muscle mass (SMM)-assessed by computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US)-and hematologic toxicity in cancer patients. A prospective cohort study was conducted in cancer patients who received anthracycline-based chemotherapy between 2018 and 2020 and who had baseline abdominal CT including L3 level for measuring SMM. Regional muscle measurements were carried out using US. A total of 65 patients (14 males, 51 females) were included. ROC (receiver operating characteristic) analysis identified threshold values of 18.0 mm [AUC (area under the curve) = 0.765] for females and 20.0 mm (AUC = 0.813) for males, predicting severe neutropenia. Using these cut-offs, females with low rectus femoris (RF) thickness (<18.0 mm) had a significantly higher incidence of grade ≥3 neutropenia (50.0% vs. 10.8%, p = 0.005), and males with low RF values (<20.0 mm) had a higher incidence (80.0% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.063). A regression analysis, irrespective of age, gender, and body mass index, revealed that only low RF muscle thickness increased the risk of grade 3-4 neutropenia by 9.210 times (95% CI = 2.401-35.326, p = 0.001). Utilizing US to measure RF muscle thickness aids in identifying cancer patients at an elevated risk of developing neutropenia. Needless to say, US can serve as a convenient and easily accessible tool for assessing low SMM, providing repeat point-of-care evaluations in clinical practice.

Abstract
This research introduces a conceptual framework designed to enhance worker safety and well-being in industrial environments, such as oil and gas construction plants, by leveraging Human Digital Twin (HDT) cutting-edge technologies and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. At its core, this study is in the developmental phase, aiming to create an integrated system that could enable real-time monitoring and analysis of the physical, mental, and emotional states of workers. It provides valuable insights into the impact of Digital Twins (DT) technology and its role in Industry 5.0. With the development of a chatbot trained as an empathic evaluator that analyses emotions expressed in written conversations using natural language processing (NLP); video logs capable of extracting emotions through facial expressions and speech analysis; and personality tests, this research intends to obtain a deeper understanding of workers' psychological characteristics and stress levels. This innovative approach might enable the identification of stress, anxiety, or other emotional factors that may affect worker safety. Whilst this study does not encompass a case study or an application in a real-world setting, it lays the groundwork for the future implementation of these technologies. The insights derived from this research are intended to inform the development of practical applications aimed at creating safer work environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parameters to adapt individual treatment strategies for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are urgently needed. The present study aimed to evaluate body composition parameters as predictors of overall survival (OS) in PDAC patients. METHODS Measurements of body composition parameters were performed on computed tomography scans at diagnosis. Height-standardized and Body Mass Index- and sex-adjusted regression formulas deriving cut-offs from a healthy population were used. The Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test was performed for survival analysis. Independent prognostic factors were identified with uni- and multivariable Cox regression analyses. RESULTS In total, 354 patients were analyzed. In a multivariable Cox model, besides tumor stage and resection status, only myosteatosis (HR 1.53; 95% CI 1.10-2.14, p = 0.01) was an independent prognostic factor of OS among body composition parameters. Subgroup analyses revealed that the prognostic impact of myosteatosis was higher in patients ≤68 years of age, with advanced tumor stages and patients without curative intended resection. CONCLUSIONS The analysis of one of the largest Caucasian cohorts to date, demonstrated myosteatosis to be an independent prognostic factor of OS in PDAC. To improve outcomes, prospective trials aiming to investigate the utility of an early assessment of myosteatosis with subsequent intervention by dieticians, sports medicine physicians, and physiotherapists are warranted.

Abstract
Obesity and sarcopenia, i.e., decreased skeletal muscle mass and function, are global health challenges. Moreover, people with obesity and sedentary lifestyles often have sleep disorders. Despite the potential associations, metabolic disturbances linking obesity, sarcopenia, and sleep disorders with cancer are neither well-defined nor understood fully. Abnormal levels of adipokines and adipomyokines originating from both adipose tissue and skeletal muscles are observed in some patients with obesity, sarcopenia and sleep disorders, as well as in cancer patients. This warrants investigation with respect to carcinogenesis. Adipokines and adipomyokines may exert either pro-carcinogenic or anti-carcinogenic effects. These factors, acting independently or together, may significantly modulate the incidence and progression of cancer. This review indicates that one of the possible pathways influencing the development of cancer may be the mutual relationship between obesity and/or sarcopenia, sleep quantity and quality, and adipokines/adipomyokines excretion. Taking into account the high proportion of persons with obesity and sedentary lifestyles, as well as the associations of these conditions with sleep disturbances, more attention should be paid to the individual and combined effects on cancer pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Factors associated with the concomitant occurrence of low muscle mass and low muscle radiodensity are unclear. This study investigated whether different skeletal muscle phenotypes are associated with functional impairment, serum inflammatory markers, and survival in patients with incurable cancer. METHODS Three hundred and twenty-six patients (median age, 60 years; 67.5% female) who had abdominal or pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans up to 30 days before the initial assessment were enrolled in the study. CT images were used for the assessment of skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD). Optimal stratification analysis was used to derive cohort-specific cutoff points to define SMI and SMD groups with a higher risk for mortality (SMI, males <45.0 cm2 /m2 and females <44.0 cm2 /m2 ; SMD, males <34 Hounsfield units [HU] and females <30 HU). Based on these cutoffs, participants were classified into four phenotypes: low-risk SMI + low-risk SMD, high-risk SMI + low-risk SMD, low-risk SMI + high-risk SMD, and high-risk SMI + high-risk SMD. RESULTS Phenotypes with high-risk SMI or high-risk SMD, especially when combined, were associated with low handgrip strength, poor performance status, higher C-reactive protein, and lower serum albumin levels. The phenotypes with high-risk SMD, regardless of low-risk SMI (hazard ratio [HR], 1.74; 95% CI, 1.05-2.88) or high-risk SMI (HR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.29-3.05) were associated with higher 90 days' mortality risk. CONCLUSION In patients with incurable cancer, phenotype groups with high-risk SMI and high-risk SMD, particularly when combined, were associated with worse functional impairment and inflammation. Moreover, high-risk SMD was associated with increased mortality risk.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to investigate the association between fat mass to lean body mass ratio (RFL), percentage of body fat (PBF), and fat mass (FM) with mortality among middle-aged and elderly cancer patients without obesity. Methods This prospective hospital-based cohort study comprised 3,201 patients with stage I to IV cancer aged 40 years or above (mean age: 58 years for female patients and 61 years for male patients; mean length of follow-up was 1.67 years; the maximal follow-up length was 6.42 years). FM and PBF were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Cox proportional hazard models were used, and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated. Results We revealed a significant association between RFL and all-cause mortality among men aged ≥60 years after adjusting for confounders. Compared with those in the lowest tertile of RFL, elderly men in the medium and highest tertile had a 35 and 34% lower hazard of death from any cause, respectively. After additionally adjusted for C-reaction protein (CRP), HRs of medium and high tertile of RFL became short of statistical significance [medium tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.74 (0.46, 1.20); highest tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.84 (0.53, 1.33)]. Among elderly women, RFL was significantly related to all-cause mortality only when the additional adjustment for CRP [medium tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 2.08 (1.08, 4.01); highest tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.90 (0.45, 1.81)]. No significant association between RFL and all-cause mortality was observed among female participants or male participants aged less than 60 years. Conclusion Our findings showed a significant non-linear association between RFL and all-cause mortality, which was observed only in elderly men, and might be attenuated by their inflammation state.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to develop and validate a distinct method to evaluate muscle mass phenotype in patients with incurable cancer based on a combination of mid-upper arm muscle area (MUAMA) and handgrip strength (HGS). METHODS This prospective cohort study was conducted with patients with incurable cancer who were enrolled at the palliative care unit of a cancer institute. The 1,660 patients were randomized into two data sets: training (70%; n = 1162), used to determine the muscle mass phenotype groups, derived from a combination of MUAMA and HGS cutoff points related to 180-days mortality; and validation (30%; n = 498), used to evaluate the relationship of the proposed muscle phenotype grading system with performance status, body composition, nutrition status, and mortality. RESULTS The training data set resulted in three distinct groups formed by combining the cutoff points of MUAMA and HGS, with the best muscle mass phenotype being group 1, the group with any impairment of muscle mass being the 2, and the worst muscle mass phenotype being group 3. In the validation data set, lower performance status (both sexes p < 0.001), worse skeletal muscle index (both sexes p < 0.001), muscle radiodensity (men, p = 0.001; women, p = 0.008), and nutritional status (men, p = 0.003; women, p < 0.001) were observed as MUAMA and HGS values diminished. Patients in group 3 presented significantly higher risk of 180-day mortality (both sexes p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The muscle mass phenotype grading system proved to be able to identify patients with lower performance status, worse body composition measurements and nutritional status, and higher risk of death in 180 days.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Muscle mass and muscle quality assessed by computed tomography (CT) have been associated with poor prognosis in oncology and surgery patients, but the relevant evidence was limited in older patients. We hypothesized that muscle mass and muscle quality indicators derived from opportunistic chest CT images at the 12th thorax vertebra level (T12) could predict in-hospital death, length of hospital stay (hospital LOS), and hospital costs among older patients in acute care wards. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study. Older patients admitted to the acute geriatric wards of a teaching hospital were continuously recruited. Chest CT images were analysed using SliceOmatic software. The skeletal muscle area, skeletal muscle radiodensity, and intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) at the T12 level were measured. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated using skeletal muscle area divided by body height squared. RESULTS We included 1135 older patients with a median age of 80 years (interquartile range, 73 to 85 years), 498 (44%) were women, 148 (13%) patients died during hospitalization. The SMI and SMD were negatively correlated to age (ρ = -0.11, P < 0.001, ρ = -0.30, P < 0.001, respectively), whereas the IMAT was positively correlated to age (ρ = 0.27, P < 0.001). Compared with survivors, dead patients had significantly lower SMI in men (P < 0.001) but not in women (P = 0.760). After adjusting for sex and other potential confounders, the SMI [increased per 1 cm2 /m2 , odds ratio (OR) 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93 to 0.99] and SMD (increased per 1 Hounsfield unit, OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.90 to 0.96) were negatively and independently associated with in-hospital death, whereas the IMAT (increased per 1 cm2 , OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.14) was independently and positively associated with in-hospital death. None of the SMI, SMD, or IMAT was significantly related to long hospital LOS or increased hospital costs. CONCLUSIONS Chest CT-derived muscle mass indicator (T12 SMI) and muscle quality indicators (T12 SMD and T12 IMAT) may serve as prognostic factors for predicting in-hospital death among older inpatients. Opportunistic chest CT images might be an overlooked resource for measuring muscle mass and muscle quality and for predicting short-term prognosis in older inpatients.

Abstract
RATIONALE Cancer is associated with muscle wasting. However, optimal protein intake has not been determined, limiting the efficacy of nutritional interventions. This systematic review aims to assess the effect of protein intake on muscle mass of patients with cancer types with high prevalence of sarcopenia during treatment, in longitudinal studies. METHODS MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were searched following PRISMA guidelines. Longitudinal studies written in English, including adults with high sarcopenia prevalence cancer diagnosis, submitted to (chemo)radiotherapy, with assessment of protein intake and muscle changes during treatment, published until 4 October 2020 were included. Studies including supplementation with substances, such as n-3 fatty acids, specific amino acids, or proteins, were excluded. Study appraisal was independently conducted by two reviewers, and a qualitative research synthesis was performed. RESULTS Overall, 575 records were identified, of which, eight studies were included (one randomized clinical trial and seven uncontrolled before and after studies). Patients with head and neck (n = 5), lung (n = 2), and esophageal cancer (n = 1) were included, comprising a total of 554 participants. The studies presented heterogeneous methodologies, objectives, and methods to assess body composition. Overall, participant groups with a mean protein intake below 1.2 g/kg presented muscle wasting, with one exception, while those reporting a mean intake above 1.4 g/kg, maintained muscle during treatment. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that protein intakes below 1.2 g/kg, even when within the recommendations, have been associated with muscle wasting during treatment. Only intakes above 1.4 g/kg have been associated with muscle maintenance. High-quality research is needed to establish an optimal dose response.

Abstract
Calf circumference (CC) has been established as a marker of muscle mass (MM) with good performance for predicting survival in individuals with cancer. The study aims to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) criteria and to evaluate the accuracy of sarcopenia using low CC relative to MM assessment by computed tomography (CT) at third lumbar vertebra level (L3) as a reference. Cross-sectional study with cancer patients aged ≥ 60 years. Data included socio-demographic, clinical and anthropometric variables. MM was assessed by CC and by CT images at the L3. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the EWGSOP2 criteria: a) low handgrip strength (HGS) + reduced MM evaluated by CT; and b) low HGS + low CC. Pearson's correlation, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive and negative predictive value were analyzed. A total of 108 patients were evaluated, age of 70.6 ± 7.4 years (mean ± standard deviation). The prevalence of sarcopenia was of 24.1% (low MM) and 25.9% (low CC). The Kappa test showed a substantial agreement (K = 0.704), 81% sensitivity, and 92% specificity. Although the EWGSOP2 advises that we should use CC measures in the algorithm for sarcopenia when no other MM diagnostic methods are available, the findings allow the use of CC instead of MM by CT in cancer patients.

Abstract
Background: Fat-free mass (FFM) depletion can be masked by a stable body weight or weight gain in the presence of a normal or high body mass index (BMI). This study investigated the prognostic value of low fat-free mass index (FFMI) in cancer patients with normal or high BMI. Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 1,602 cancer patients with normal/high BMI. The association of FFMI with patients' overall survival (OS) was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method and a Cox model. Results: In this analysis, there were 974 (60.8%) females and 628 (39.2%) males. Low FFMI was associated with worse OS when compared with those patients with normal FFMI. After multivariate adjustment, low FFMI was demonstrated to be an independent unfavorable prognostic factor (HR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.28, 2.23; P < 0.001) in cancer patients with normal/high BMI. For specific tumor type, low FFMI was found to be associated with worse prognosis in patients with lung cancer, breast cancer and upper gastrointestinal cancer. In subgroup analysis, the association of low FFMI with worse survival was significantly modified by weight loss (P for interaction = 0.012), and those patients with concurrent low FFMI and weight loss showed the worst prognosis (HR: 3.53; 95% CI: 2.04, 6.11; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Low FFMI was associated with worse prognosis in cancer patients with normal/high BMI. This study highlights the usefulness of FFMI for prognostic estimation in these patients.

Abstract
Simple Summary Cancer cachexia is a debilitating syndrome, caused by both tumor growth and chemotherapy. The skeletal muscle is one of the main tissues affected during cachexia, presenting with altered metabolism and function, leading to progressive tissue wasting. In the current study we aimed at counteracting cachexia by pharmacologically improving metabolic function with the mitochondria-targeted compound SS-31. Experimental cancer cachexia was obtained using C26-bearing mice either receiving chemotherapy (oxaliplatin plus 5-fluorouracil) or not. SS-31 proved effective in rescuing some of the metabolic impairments imposed by both tumor and chemotherapy in the skeletal muscle and the liver, improving systemic energy control. Unfortunately, such effects were no longer present at late disease stages when refractory cachexia ensued. Overall, we provide evidence of potential new treatments targeting mitochondrial function in order to counteract or delay cancer cachexia. Abstract Objective: Cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome frequently occurring in cancer patients and exacerbated by chemotherapy. In skeletal muscle of cancer hosts, reduced oxidative capacity and low intracellular ATP resulting from abnormal mitochondrial function were described. Methods: The present study aimed at evaluating the ability of the mitochondria-targeted compound SS-31 to counteract muscle wasting and altered metabolism in C26-bearing (C26) mice either receiving chemotherapy (OXFU: oxaliplatin plus 5-fluorouracil) or not. Results: Mitochondrial dysfunction in C26-bearing (C26) mice associated with alterations of cardiolipin fatty acid chains. Selectively targeting cardiolipin with SS-31 partially counteracted body wasting and prevented the reduction of glycolytic myofiber area. SS-31 prompted muscle mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity and rescued intracellular ATP levels, although it was unable to counteract mitochondrial protein loss. Progressively increased dosing of SS-31 to C26 OXFU mice showed transient (21 days) beneficial effects on body and muscle weight loss before the onset of a refractory end-stage condition (28 days). At day 21, SS-31 prevented mitochondrial loss and abnormal autophagy/mitophagy. Skeletal muscle, liver and plasma metabolomes were analyzed, showing marked energy and protein metabolism alterations in tumor hosts. SS-31 partially modulated skeletal muscle and liver metabolome, likely reflecting an improved systemic energy homeostasis. Conclusions: The results suggest that targeting mitochondrial function may be as important as targeting protein anabolism/catabolism for the prevention of cancer cachexia. With this in mind, prospective multi-modal therapies including SS-31 are warranted.

Abstract
Low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) is increasingly recognized for its predictive value for adverse events in cancer patients. In specific, the predictive value of LSMM has been demonstrated for anti-cancer drug toxicity in a variety of cancer types and anti-cancer drugs. However, due to the limited sample size and study populations focused on a single cancer type, an overall predictive value of LSMM for anti-cancer drug toxicity remains unknown. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the predictive value of LSMM and perform a meta-analysis to analyse the overall effect. A systematic search was conducted of MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, and Cochrane. Inclusion criteria were skeletal muscle mass (SMM) evaluated with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), articles published in English, SMM studied in humans, SMM measurement normalized for height, and patients did not receive an intervention to treat or prevent LSMM. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model and expressed in odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity was assessed using χ2 and I2 statistics. The search yielded 907 studies. 31 studies were included in the systematic review. Sample sizes ranged from 21 to 414 patients. The occurrence of LSMM ranged from 12.2% to 89.0%. The most frequently studied cancer types were oesophageal, renal, colorectal, breast, and head and neck cancer. Patients with LSMM had a higher risk of severe toxicity (OR 4.08; 95% CI 2.48-6.70; p < 0.001) and dose-limiting toxicity (OR 2.24; 95% CI 1.28-3.92; p < 0.001) compared to patients without LSMM. To conclude, the predictive value of LSMM for anti-cancer drug toxicity can be observed across cancer types. This information increases the need for further research into interventions that could treat LSMM as well as the possibility to adapt treatment regimens based on the presence of LSMM.

Abstract
Lung cancer (LC) represents the most commonly diagnosed neoplasm worldwide for both sexes and is the leading cause of cancer mortality. Malnutrition is a comorbidity frequently found in neoplastic patients, but it remains often underestimated and thus undertreated. In this review, we aimed to investigate the incidence of malnutrition among LC patients according to different screening and assessment tools, to evaluate the impact of weight loss and body composition on survival, and to analyze the efficacy of different nutritional interventions in this setting. Although malnutrition, weight loss, and body composition changes can affect survival and other clinical outcomes in LC patients, the role of nutritional interventions is not yet strongly proven, and further studies are recommended. Nevertheless, screening, assessing, and eventually treating malnutrition in LC patients are strongly recommended, according to the most recent nutritional intervention guidelines for oncology patients.
