Abstract
Cannabis use is a worldwide issue with the development of legalization. Prenatal exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of cannabis, is related to affect fetal nervous system development. In our present study, we administered THC to pregnant mice from gestational day 5.5-12.5. Differences in neuronal cell composition and organization between the two groups were found by staining sections of the offspring hippocampus at PND21. In addition, RNA-seq of hippocampal tissue also suggested differences in gene expression due to THC treatment, especially significant enrichment to neurogenesis and neural differentiation. Subsequently, the effect of THC treatment on the proliferation and differentiation capacity of neural stem cells (NSCs) was confirmed. Based on the RNA-seq results, we selected the differentially expressed transcription factor MEF2C for validation. The effect of THC treatment on NSCs differentiation was found to be regulated by knocking down the expression of MEF2C in NSCs. Considering that THC is an agonist of cannabinoid receptor (CB1R), the differentiation outcome of NSC after THC treatment was significantly rescued, by pretreating with the CB1R inhibitor Rimonabant. Notably, pretreatment with Rimonabant restored the expression of MEF2C. Taken together, the present results suggested that THC regulated the MEF2C pathway through CB1R and had an impact on hippocampal neurodevelopment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand reproductive-aged women's marijuana use beliefs and attitudes. METHODS Qualitative research (10 focus groups and 2 bulletin boards) with 95 Washington State women, aged 18 to 44 years, segmented by marijuana-using pregnant/breastfeeding; marijuana-using not-pregnant/breastfeeding; and nonmarijuana users. Participants completed up to 10 survey questions. We used deductive and inductive coding to analyze findings. RESULTS Marijuana-using pregnant/breastfeeding participants use marijuana to manage physical/mental pain and because of stigma, feel guilty, and sometimes hide use. Medicines have failed to address symptoms. Participants perceived marijuana safer than alcohol, tobacco, and illicit substances. Participants believed in the legitimacy of marijuana for health maintenance and want others to take their personally experienced benefits seriously. Participants interpreted lack of conclusive research as marijuana use not being unsafe. They want more information. All segments preferred hearing from other women about marijuana use experiences, with the marijuana-using pregnant/breastfeeding segment feeling strongest about this. CONCLUSIONS Personal experiences with, and anecdotes from family/friends about, the effects of marijuana use during pregnancy/breastfeeding influence marijuana-using participants' decision making. NURSING IMPLICATIONS It is important to speak with perinatal patients in a nonjudgmental/nonthreatening manner that acknowledges why reproductive-aged women may use marijuana and that conveys validation of patients' positive experiences with marijuana and a harm-reduction goal.

Abstract
Introduction: There is widespread acceptance of cannabis for medical or recreational use across the society, including pregnant women. Concerningly, numerous studies find that the developing central nervous system (CNS) is vulnerable to the detrimental effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In contrast, almost nothing on the consequences of perinatal cannabidiol (CBD) exposure. In this study, we used mice to investigate the adult impact of perinatal cannabinoid exposure (PCE) with THC, CBD, or a 1:1 ratio of THC and CBD on behaviors. Furthermore, the lasting impact of PCE on fluoxetine sensitivity in the forced swim test (FST) was evaluated to probe neurochemical pathways interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Methods: Pregnant CD1 dams were injected subcutaneously daily with vehicle, 3 mg/kg THC, 3 mg/kg CBD, or 3 mg/kg THC +3 mg/kg CBD from gestational day 5 to postnatal day 10. Mass spectroscopic (MS) analyses were conducted to measure the THC and CBD brain levels in dams and their embryonic progenies. PCE adults were subjected to a battery of behavioral tests: open field arena, sucrose preference test, marble burying test, nestlet shredding test, and FST. Results: MS analysis found substantial levels of THC and CBD in embryonic brains. Our behavioral testing found that PCE females receiving THC or CBD buried significantly more marbles than control mice. Interestingly, PCE males receiving CBD or THC+CBD had significantly increased sucrose preference. While PCE with THC or CBD did not affect FST immobility, PCE with THC or CBD prevented fluoxetine from decreasing immobility in both males and females. Excitingly, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibition with a dose of URB597 that was behaviorally inactive in the FST rescued fluoxetine efficacy in PCE mice of both sexes. Conclusions: Our data suggest that PCE with either THC, CBD, or THC+CBD alters repetitive and hedonic behaviors in a phytocannabinoid and sex-dependent manner. In addition, PCE with THC or CBD prevents fluoxetine from enhancing coping behavior. The restoration of fluoxetine responsiveness in THC or CBD PCE adults by inhibition of FAAH suggests that PCE causes a lasting reduction of the ECS and that enhancement of anandamide signaling represents a potential treatment for behavioral deficits following PCE.

Abstract
Plants of the genus Cannabis have been gaining attention in medicine. The most outstanding treatments include antispasmodic, analgesic, antiemetic, neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory actions. The aim of the study was to describe patents associated with cannabis and cannabinoids as a treatment for pregnant women. A search was carried out on four patent bases: National Institute of Industrial Property, Latipat, Espacenet and Patentscope. The used search keys were "Cannabis", "Cannabidiol", "Cannabinoids", "CBD" and "THC" associated with "pregnant women". Patents in any language and year were considered. A total of 1,402 patents were found in all the used databases. After reading the title and abstract, patents were excluded if they did not meet the eligibility criteria and/or if they were duplicates, thus leaving 11 patents on the use of cannabis and/or cannabinoids as treatment in pregnant women. A critical analysis was carried out. All selected patents were from the Asian continent (China), focusing on traditional Chinese medicine for treating various possible changes during pregnancy and also for diseases prevention in the postpartum period. It was found that the main causes for the need of such treatments were related to spleen deficiencies, inability and/or moisture stagnation. Finally, the vast majority of treatments used Cannabis fruits associated with other plants. Given the above, patents related to cannabis and cannabinoids for the treatment of pregnant women in the peri and postnatal periods were found to be associated with traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract
Cannabis is the world's most widely abused illicit drug and consumption amongst women during and surrounding the period of pregnancy is increasing. Previously, we have shown that cannabinoid exposure via lactation during the early postnatal period disrupts early developmental trajectories of prefrontal cortex maturation and induces behavioral abnormalities during the first weeks of life in male and female rat progeny. Here, we investigated the lasting consequences of this postnatal cannabinoid exposure on synaptic and behavioral parameters in the adult offspring of ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-treated dams. At adulthood, these perinatally THC-exposed rats exhibits deficits in social discrimination accompanied by an overall augmentation of social exploratory behavior. These behavioral alterations were further correlated with multiple abnormalities in synaptic plasticity in the prefrontal cortex, including lost endocannabinoid-mediated long-term depression (LTD), lost long-term potentiation and augmented mGlu2/3-LTD. Finally, basic parameters of intrinsic excitability at prefrontal cortex pyramidal neurons were similarly altered by the perinatal THC exposure. Thus, perinatal THC exposure via lactation induces lasting deficits in behavior and synaptic function which persist into adulthood life in male and female progeny.

Abstract
Marijuana use for medical purposes dates back to ancient times. Despite its high therapeutic potential, its adverse effects have raised important legal restrictions. However, this situation in Spain may soon undergo significant changes, without anyone so far having studied the knowledge and/or the level of acceptance of medical marijuana by future healthcare professionals. The aim of the present study was to determine nursing students’ knowledge of and attitudes towards medical marijuana. A cross-sectional design was used. A total of 578 nursing students from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), ≥18 years old and of both sexes, were invited to complete the Spanish version of the questionnaire “Medical Marijuana” between January and May 2019. A total of 364 students decided to participate in the study. More than 75% of the students agreed with the legalization of medical marijuana, although their knowledge and confidence levels regarding efficacy, safety and drug interactions of medical marijuana were low. Nursing students showed a clear lack of knowledge about medical marijuana and thus, in light of possible regulatory changes, it would be necessary to strengthen the training of nurses with respect to medical marijuana in order to make responsible use of it.

Abstract
Nowadays, cannabis is the most consumed illicit drug. The global prevalence of the use of cannabis in 2017 was estimated in 188 million of people, 3.8% of worldwide population. Importantly, the legalization of cannabis in different countries, together with the increase in the apparent safety perception, may result in a great variety of health problems. Indeed, an important concern is the increase in cannabis use among pregnant and breastfeeding women, especially since the content of delta9-tetrahidrocannabinol (THC) is currently around 2-fold higher than it was 15-20 years ago. The purpose of this study was to review cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding including epidemiological aspects, therapeutic or preventive strategies, and experimental considerations and results from animal models of perinatal cannabis exposure to analyze the underlying neurobiological mechanisms and to identify new therapeutic approaches. A recent report revealed that among pregnant women aged 15-44, last month cannabis use prevalence was over 4.9%, raising to 8.5% in the 18-25-year-old age range. Pre- and post-natal exposure to cannabis may be associated with critical alterations in the newborn infants that are prolonged throughout childhood and adolescence. Briefly, several reports revealed that perinatal cannabis exposure was associated with low birth weight, reduction in the head circumference, cognitive deficits (attention, learning, and memory), disturbances in emotional response leading to aggressiveness, high impulsivity, or affective disorders, and higher risk to develop a substance use disorder. Furthermore, important neurobiological alterations in different neuromodulatory and neurotransmission systems have been associated with cannabis consumption during pregnancy and lactation. In spite of the evidences pointing out the negative behavioral and neurobiological consequences of cannabis use in pregnant and breastfeeding women, there are still limitations to identify biomarkers that could help to establish preventive or therapeutic approaches. It is difficult to define the direct association specifically with cannabis, avoiding other confusing factors, co-occurrence of other drugs consumption (mainly nicotine and alcohol), lifestyle, or socioeconomic factors. Therefore, it is necessary to progress in the characterization of short- and long-term cannabis exposure-related disturbances.

Abstract
Cannabis exposure during the perinatal period results in varied and significant consequences in affected offspring. The prevalence of detrimental outcomes of perinatal cannabis exposure is likely to increase in tandem with the broadening of legalization and acceptance of the drug. As such, it is crucial to highlight the immediate and protracted consequences of cannabis exposure on pre- and postnatal development. Here, we identify lasting changes in neurons' learning flexibility (synaptic plasticity) and epigenetic misregulation in animal models of perinatal cannabinoid exposure (using synthetic cannabinoids or active components of the cannabis plant), in addition to significant alterations in social behavior and executive functions. These findings are supported by epidemiological data indicating similar behavioral outcomes throughout life in human offspring exposed to cannabis during pregnancy. Further, we indicate important lingering questions regarding accurate modeling of perinatal cannabis exposure as well as the need for sex- and age-dependent outcome measures in future studies.

Abstract
Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs worldwide. In addition, use of synthetic cannabinoids is increasing, especially among adolescents and young adults. Although human studies have shown that the use of marijuana during pregnancy leads to adverse behavioral effects, such as deficiencies in attention and executive function in affected offspring, the rate of marijuana use among pregnant women is steadily increasing. Various aspects of human behavior including emotion, learning, and memory are dependent on complex interactions between multiple neurotransmitter systems that are especially vulnerable to alterations during the developmental period. Thus, exploration of neurotransmitter changes in response to prenatal cannabinoid exposure is crucial to develop an understanding of how homeostatic imbalance and various long-term neurobehavioral deficits manifest following the abuse of marijuana or other synthetic cannabinoids during pregnancy. Current literature confirms that vast alterations to neurotransmitter systems are present following prenatal cannabinoid exposure, and many of these alterations within the brain are region specific, time-dependent, and sexually dimorphic. In this review, we aim to provide a summary of observed changes to various neurotransmitter systems following cannabinoid exposure during pregnancy and to draw possible correlations to reported behavioral alterations in affected offspring.

Abstract
Depression, violence, and infant complications are recognized risk factors for negative birth experiences. Substance use, which often co-occurs with these risk factors, is unexplored for its role upon the birth experience. The frequency of these risk factors among childbearing adolescents suggests a need for research in this area. This study revealed direct and indirect effects by all risk factors on the adolescent's birth experience. Implications for nursing practice suggest collaboration between maternal child health and mental health nurses in prenatal, hospital, and follow-up healthcare settings to provide essential assessment of risk factors and resources and referrals across the perinatal period.

Abstract
Recreational and medicinal marijuana uses have become more prevalent in recent years. Women's health nurses are increasingly likely to encounter pregnant women who use or have used marijuana. Research has found that inadequate screening for substance use, inadequate knowledge about the effects of marijuana use, and punitive counseling are barriers to women's understanding of the importance of seeking treatment for substance use. Provision of evidence-based counseling, education, and resources support women and strengthen the patient-provider relationship. Women's health nurses can gain a basic understanding of the effects of perinatal marijuana use and create a plan for women who have positive screening results. This article reviews two recent studies that examine marijuana use during pregnancy and suggest interventions that women's health nurses can implement.
