Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and acute myocardial infarction (MI) are significant vascular events that impact patient health and mortality. Both conditions share common risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. This study investigated the potential connection between RVO and MI, particularly among younger individuals, to improve preventive measures and management protocols. METHOD A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, adhering to the PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. Multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and ClinicalTrials.gov, were exhaustively searched until August 24, 2024. Studies were selected based on their reports of the association between RVO and MI risk. Quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale, and data were pooled using a random-effects model with hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULT Twelve studies comprising 371,817 participants were included. Meta-analysis revealed a pooled hazard ratio of 1.324 (95% CI, 1.238-1.415), indicating a significant association between RVO and increased MI risk (p = 0.0001). Subgroup analysis for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) showed a hazard ratio of 1.691 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.142, 2.502, p = 0.009) with moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 36%), whereas branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) yielded a non-significant hazard ratio of 1.167 (95% CI 0.843, 2.106, p = 0.444; I2 = 33%). Publication bias was identified (Egger's test, p = 0.036) and addressed through trim-and-fill adjustment, maintaining statistical significance. CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis shows a strong association between CRVO and a 69.1% increased risk of MI, while BRVO shows no significant correlation. Overall, RVO is linked to a 32.4% elevated risk of MI. Despite slight publication bias, adjusted analyses confirm reliability, indicating that improved cardiovascular monitoring for RVO patients, especially those with CRVO, is essential to mitigate MI risk. Abstract
PURPOSE To characterize hemi-retinal vein occlusion (HRVO) in patients presenting to a multi-tier ophthalmology hospital network. METHODS This retrospective, hospital-based study analyzed 2,834,616 new patients between August 2010 and June 2021. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of HRVO in at least one eye were included as cases. Data were collected using an electronic medical record system. Data were compared to the findings noted in branch RVO (BRVO) and central RVO (CRVO) patients. RESULTS HRVO constituted 0.9% ( n = 191) of all the retinal vein occlusions (RVOs), with the mean age being 60.55 ± 10.14 years. Most patients were male (125, 65.45%) with unilateral (92.67%) affliction. Majority presented during the sixth (31.41%) or seventh (32.46%) decade of life. Most patients reported mild (37.07%) or moderate (27.32%) visual impairment, with vision < 20/200 being less common in HRVO (25.8%) and BRVO (17.2%) compared to CRVO (44.1%) ( P < 0.00001). Glaucoma was diagnosed and treated in 49 (23.90%) eyes, which was much higher than CRVO (11.45%) and BRVO (5.04%) ( P < 0.001), though neovascular glaucoma was much less than CRVO (2.9% vs. 9.2%) ( P = 0.0037). On follow-up, HRVO eyes (12.2%) had lesser vision loss compared to CRVO eyes (13.7%) (this difference does not look very significant to me), though BRVO had the least (9.1%) vision loss. CONCLUSION HRVO is a rare RVO, presenting more in males. It causes less-severe visual impairment compared to CRVO. Large majority of patients with HRVO do not have identifiable systemic risk factors other than age. Preexisting glaucoma was more associated with HRVO compared to other RVOs.

Abstract
Retinal vessels have been good predictive and prognostic imaging biomarkers for systemic or eye diseases. Numerous studies have shown that the two retinal vein occlusion entities may correlate with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events or primary open-angle glaucoma. This study aims to investigate if there is a disparity in the correlations between branch RVO (BRVO) and central RVO (CRVO) with systemic disorders or POAG, thus explaining the pathogenic difference between BRVO and CRVO. This retrospective case-control study enrolled 59 RVO subjects (118 eyes), including 25 CRVO and 34 BRVO subjects, who received routine eye and brain MRI examinations. The geometric characteristics of the caliber of the retinal and cerebral blood vessels and the optic nerve subarachnoid space width (ONSASW) were measured. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that ONSASW at 3 mm behind the globe (p = 0.044) and the relative retinal venular calibers (p = 0.031) were independent risk factors for the CRVO-affected eyes group in comparison with the BRVO-affected eyes group after adjusting for age, duration of hypertension, BMI, and IOP. In the CRVO-affected eyes, narrower relative retinal arteriolar calibers (p = 0.041) and wider relative venular calibers (p = 0.011) were independent risk factors compared with the CRVO-contralateral normal eyes when adjusting for IOP. We concluded that BRVO may be more associated with cerebrovascular diseases, and CRVO may be correlated with primary angle glaucoma. The geometric characteristics difference between the retinal and cerebrovascular may explain the pathological difference between CRVO and BRVO.

Abstract
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis (SOVT) are rare diseases in the pediatric population; however, the ophthalmic and neurologic morbidity are significant. As published data are scarce for these conditions, we present our experience with pediatric ocular venous thrombosis in four patients, and discuss recommended management for evaluation and treatment. We suggest performing thrombophilia workup for all pediatric patients with RVO or SOVT. In patients with thrombophilia risk factors or patients with additional thrombi, we highly recommend initiating anticoagulation therapy. There is a need for more research in order to determine the optimal management strategy.

Abstract
ObjectiveTo evaluate the risk factors and outcomes of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in young patients (< 40 years).MethodsIn this retrospective monocentric case series, we included young patients (<40 years) with CRVO. Patients’ medical files were analyzed focusing on demographic characteristics, suspected risk factors, ophthalmic work-up, visual acuity (VA), treatment, and outcomes.ResultsA total of 54 eyes of 52 patients were included. Central retinal vein occlusion was considered idiopathic in 13 patients (25%). The main risk factors identified were ocular hypertension (20.4%), inflammation (20.4%), high blood pressure (14.8%), and coagulation abnormality (11.1%). Final VA was lower in patients with high blood pressure and inflammation when compared to patients with no risk factor (p = 0.03 and 0.04, respectively). Intravitreal injections were needed in 23 eyes (42.6%) and 19 eyes (35.2%) received panretinal photocoagulation treatment.ConclusionCentral retinal vein occlusion is frequently associated with risk factors in young patients (75% of patients). In addition to the usual factors found in older patients, such as ocular hypertension and high blood pressure, coagulation abnormality and inflammation were also among the risk factors identified. Young patients with CRVO should be evaluated for the presence of risk factors and patients with high blood pressure or inflammatory findings should be followed carefully since they have a worse outcome.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of Mingmu Xiaoyao granules (MMXY) on the morphology and function of the retina and the mechanism of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway-related proteins in rats with anxiety and depression induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Methods: Fifty-two male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated to either a control (n = 14) or a simulated CUMS group (n = 38). The CUMS model was established successfully at 4 weeks. Six rats in each group were randomly selected to be sacrificed and their retinas isolated for histological examination. At 5 weeks, rats in the CUMS group were randomly allocated to the following groups: Model (CUMS + pure water), MMXY-H (CUMS + MMXY 7.2 g/kg/d), MMXY-L (CUMS + MMXY 3.6 g/kg/d), and CBZ (CUMS + Carbamazepine 20 mg/kg/d), with eight rats in each group. All rats were given the relevant intervention once a day. At 12 weeks, sucrose preference and open field tests were performed to evaluate the anxiety and depression status of rats. In live rats, optical coherence tomography angiography was used to measure retinal thickness and blood flow, while electroretinograms (ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were used to evaluate retinal function. The next day, the specimens were sacrificed for serological, histological, immunofluorescence, Western blot and transmission electron microscopy examinations to explore the mechanism of MMXY in CUMS rats. Results: MMXY improved the anxiety and depression-like behavior of rats. Results of optical coherence tomography angiography showed that MMXY improved retinal inner thickness and blood flow in CUMS rats. MMXY improved the amplitude of a- and b-waves in the scotopic and photopic ERG, as well as N2 and P2 peak time and amplitude in the flash-VEP in CUMS rats. Retinal histological staining and transmission electron microscopy showed that MMXY reversed retinal morphology and ultrastructure in CUMS rats. MMXY reduced the expression of Beclin1 and LC3I/II proteins, regulated the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, inhibited autophagy, and had a protective effect on the retina in CUMS rats. Conclusion: MMXY may effectively improve retinal morphology and function as well as anxiety and depression-like behaviors in CUMS rats by regulating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.
