Effect of a two-year fluoride decay protection protocol on titanium brackets

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of metallic ion release of orthodontic brackets in three different pH conditions - An invitro study

Background

Fluoridated mouth rinses improve anti-cariogenic environment but decrease oral pH below critical value, affecting orthodontic bracket surface topography and causing corrosive changes over prolonged use. This invitro study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the surface topography and metallic ion release of the stainless steel (SS) brackets at varying acidic and alkaline pH.

Materials and methods

Forty unused SS brackets were divided into four groups (Group A, B, C, D) and immersed for 48- hours in solutions of artificial saliva and sodium fluoride (0.2 %) mouth rinse at varying pH of 5.5,6.7,7 and 8. The surface morphologic changes were analyzed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 50×, 150×, and 500× magnification. The changes in slot area were scored using the customized scale. The Energy Dispersive Xray Spectroscopy Analysis (EDAX) was used to estimate the probed elements' atomic and weight percentage.

Results

The mean score of the scale was 3.4 for the brackets immersed in the acidic solution which was statistically significant (p = 0.00)and for alkaline and neutral solutions (p = 0.00). Chromium was found to be significantly higher in the alkaline solution (p = 0.016) followed by the neutral solution. Carbon was found excess in acidic solution than the neutral and alkaline solution.

Conclusion

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ion release in stainless steel brackets using SEM and EDAX revealed the corrosive effect of fluoride ion causing maximum surface changes in acidic medium and chromium release in alkaline pH.

Bond strength of commercial veneering porcelain to experimental cast Ti-Cr alloy

This study evaluated bond strengths of three commercial veneering porcelains to experimental cast titanium-chromium (Ti-Cr) alloy and commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) via three-point bending test. After the bending test, the fractured specimens were analyzed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The Ti-Cr specimens showed lower bond strengths than the cp-Ti specimens, irrespective of the layering porcelain material; however, all the strengths exceeded the minimum requirement of ISO 9693-1:2012 (>25 MPa). EPMA revealed that titanium and/or chromium elements were detected on the debonded porcelain surface of the Ti-Cr and cp-Ti specimens in the case of the higher bond strength. Contrastingly, the residual porcelain was retained on the metallic surface in the case of the lower bond strength. Although porcelain bonding to the titanium alloy is influenced by porcelain type, the Ti-Cr alloy could be feasible for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations.

Effect of 0.05% Sodium Fluoride Mouthwash on Surface Roughness and Friction between Ceramic Brackets and Rhodium-Coated and Uncoated Stainless Steel Wires

Objectives:

This study aimed to assess the effect of 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) mouthwash on the surface roughness and friction between ceramic brackets and rhodium-coated (RC) and uncoated stainless steel (SS) wires.

Materials and Methods:

This experimental study was performed on 48 maxillary premolar ceramic brackets. Twenty-four pieces of RC-SS wires were used. Samples were divided into four groups. Groups 1 and 2 were immersed in artificial saliva, and groups 3 and 4 were immersed in a solution consisting of artificial saliva (9%) and mouthwash (91%). To assess surface roughness, images were obtained from the surface of wires and brackets with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after the intervention. To assess friction, the wires were ligated into brackets, and friction was measured at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 0.05 significance level.

Results:

Friction during sliding in RC wires was significantly less than that in SS wires (P<0.05). Increase in the friction in SS wires by mouthwash was significantly greater compared to RC wires (P<0.05). Surface roughness coefficients of the wires before the intervention were not significantly different. The surface roughness of the wires significantly increased after the intervention and it was greater in SS wires than in RC wires (P<0.05).

Conclusion:

Considering the lower friction and surface roughness of SS-RC wires compared to SS wires, SS-RC wires may be a better alternative for use with ceramic brackets.
