Fundamental investigation of photoacoustic signal generation from single aerosol particles at varying relative humidity

Unexpected concentration dependence of the mass accommodation coefficient of water on aqueous triethylene glycol droplets

The mass accommodation coefficient αM of water on aqueous triethylene glycol droplets was determined for water mole fractions in the range xmol = 0.1-0.93 and temperatures between 21 and 26 °C from modulated Mie scattering measurement on single optically-trapped droplets in combination with a kinetic multilayer model. αM reaches minimum values around 0.005 at a critical water concentration of xmol = 0.38, and increases with decreasing water content to a value of ≈0.1 for almost pure triethylene glycol droplets, essentially independent of the temperature. Above xmol = 0.38, αM first increases with increasing water content and then stabilises at a value of ≈0.1 at the lowest temperatures, while at the highest temperature its value remains around 0.005. We analysed the unexpected concentration and temperature dependence with a previously proposed two-step model for mass accommodation which provides concentration and temperature-dependent activation enthalpies and entropies. We suggest that the unexpected minimum in αM at intermediate water concentrations might arise from a more or less saturated hydrogen-bond network that forms at the droplet surface.

Accurate Measurement of the Optical Properties of Single Aerosol Particles Using Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy

New approaches for the sensitive and accurate quantification of aerosol optical properties are needed to improve the current understanding of the unique physical chemistry of airborne particles and to explore their roles in fields as diverse as chemical manufacturing, healthcare, and atmospheric science. We have pioneered the use of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), with concurrent angularly resolved elastic light scattering measurements, to interrogate the optical properties of single aerosol particles levitated in optical and electrodynamic traps. This approach enables the robust quantification of optical properties such as extinction cross sections for individual particles of known size. Our measurements can now distinguish the scattering and absorption contributions to the overall light extinction, from which the real and imaginary components of the complex refractive indices can be retrieved and linked to chemical composition. In this Feature Article, we show that this innovative measurement platform enables accurate and precise optical measurements for spherical and nonspherical particles, whether nonabsorbing or absorbing at the CRDS probe wavelength. We discuss the current limitations of our approach and the key challenges in physical and atmospheric chemistry that can now be addressed by CRDS measurements for single aerosol particles levitated in controlled environments.

Optical-Trapping Laser Techniques for Characterizing Airborne Aerosol Particles and Its Application in Chemical Aerosol Study

We present a broad assessment on the studies of optically-trapped single airborne aerosol particles, particularly chemical aerosol particles, using laser technologies. To date, extensive works have been conducted on ensembles of aerosols as well as on their analogous bulk samples, and a decent general description of airborne particles has been drawn and accepted. However, substantial discrepancies between observed and expected aerosols behavior have been reported. To fill this gap, single-particle investigation has proved to be a unique intersection leading to a clear representation of microproperties and size-dependent comportment affecting the overall aerosol behavior, under various environmental conditions. In order to achieve this objective, optical-trapping technologies allow holding and manipulating a single aerosol particle, while offering significant advantages such as contactless handling, free from sample collection and preparation, prevention of contamination, versatility to any type of aerosol, and flexibility to accommodation of various analytical systems. We review spectroscopic methods that are based on the light-particle interaction, including elastic light scattering, light absorption (cavity ring-down and photoacoustic spectroscopies), inelastic light scattering and emission (Raman, laser-induced breakdown, and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopies), and digital holography. Laser technologies offer several benefits such as high speed, high selectivity, high accuracy, and the ability to perform in real-time, in situ. This review, in particular, discusses each method, highlights the advantages and limitations, early breakthroughs, and recent progresses that have contributed to a better understanding of single particles and particle ensembles in general.

Shining New Light on the Kinetics of Water Uptake by Organic Aerosol Particles

The uptake of water vapor by various organic aerosols is important in a number of applications ranging from medical delivery of pharmaceutical aerosols to cloud formation in the atmosphere. The coefficient that describes the probability that the impinging gas-phase molecule sticks to the surface of interest is called the mass accommodation coefficient, α_M. Despite the importance of this coefficient for the description of water uptake kinetics, accurate values are still lacking for many systems. In this Feature Article, we present various experimental techniques that have been evoked in the literature to study the interfacial transport of water and discuss the corresponding strengths and limitations. This includes our recently developed technique called photothermal single-particle spectroscopy (PSPS). The PSPS technique allows for a retrieval of α_M values from three independent, yet simultaneous measurements operating close to equilibrium, providing a robust assessment of interfacial mass transport. We review the currently available data for α_M for water on various organics and discuss the few studies that address the temperature and relative humidity dependence of α_M for water on organics. The knowledge of the latter, for example, is crucial to assess the water uptake kinetics of organic aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere. Finally, we argue that PSPS might also be a viable method to better restrict the α_M value for water on liquid water.

Photoacoustic studies of energy transfer from ozone photoproducts to bath gases following Chappuis band photoexcitation

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is a sensitive technique for the detection of trace gases and aerosols and measurements of their absorption coefficients. The accuracy of such measurements is often governed by the fidelity of the PAS instrument calibration. Gas samples laden with O3 of a known or independently measured absorption coefficient are a convenient and commonplace route to calibration of PAS instruments operating at visible wavelengths (λ), yet the accuracy of such calibrations remains unclear. Importantly, the photoacoustic detection of O3 in the Chappuis band (λ ∼ 400-700 nm) depends strongly on the timescales for energy transfer from the nascent photoproducts O(3P) and O2(X, v > 0) to translational motion of bath gas species. Significant uncertainties remain concerning the dependence of these timescales on both the sample pressure and the bath gas composition. Here, we demonstrate accurate characterisation of microphone response function dependencies on pressure using a speaker transducer to excite resonant acoustic modes of our photoacoustic cells. These corrections enable measurements of photoacoustic response amplitudes (also referred to as PAS sensitivities) and phase shifts with variation in static pressure and bath gas composition, at discrete visible wavelengths spanning the Chappuis band. We develop and fit a photochemical relaxation model to these measurements to retrieve the associated variations in the aforementioned relaxation timescales for O(3P) and O2(X, v > 0). These timescales enable a full assessment of the accuracy of PAS calibrations using O3-laden gas samples, dependent on the sample pressure, bath gas composition and PAS laser modulation frequency.
