Photoacoustic imaging plus X: a review

Significance

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI) represents an emerging modality within the realm of biomedical imaging technology. It seamlessly blends the wealth of optical contrast with the remarkable depth of penetration offered by ultrasound. These distinctive features of PAI hold tremendous potential for various applications, including early cancer detection, functional imaging, hybrid imaging, monitoring ablation therapy, and providing guidance during surgical procedures. The synergy between PAI and other cutting-edge technologies not only enhances its capabilities but also propels it toward broader clinical applicability.

Aim

The integration of PAI with advanced technology for PA signal detection, signal processing, image reconstruction, hybrid imaging, and clinical applications has significantly bolstered the capabilities of PAI. This review endeavor contributes to a deeper comprehension of how the synergy between PAI and other advanced technologies can lead to improved applications.

Approach

An examination of the evolving research frontiers in PAI, integrated with other advanced technologies, reveals six key categories named "PAI plus X." These categories encompass a range of topics, including but not limited to PAI plus treatment, PAI plus circuits design, PAI plus accurate positioning system, PAI plus fast scanning systems, PAI plus ultrasound sensors, PAI plus advanced laser sources, PAI plus deep learning, and PAI plus other imaging modalities.

Results

After conducting a comprehensive review of the existing literature and research on PAI integrated with other technologies, various proposals have emerged to advance the development of PAI plus X. These proposals aim to enhance system hardware, improve imaging quality, and address clinical challenges effectively.

Conclusions

The progression of innovative and sophisticated approaches within each category of PAI plus X is positioned to drive significant advancements in both the development of PAI technology and its clinical applications. Furthermore, PAI not only has the potential to integrate with the above-mentioned technologies but also to broaden its applications even further.

Atomically Smooth Gold Microflake-Enabled Fiber-Tip Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Temperature and Pressure Sensing

Fiber-tip sensors based on the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) are one of the most widely used devices for temperature and pressure measurements in space-confined scenarios. However, the deposited metal films with a polycrystalline structure tend to form microcracks under strain, which can undermine the optical quality factor and thus sensing performance of these fiber-tip sensors. Here, we demonstrate an atomically smooth gold microflake (GMF)-enabled fiber-tip FPI sensor with a Q factor as high as 628. Benefiting from the high reflectivity and flexibility of GMFs and the elasticity of the PDMS spacer, the fiber-tip FPI can maintain stable sensing performance under large deformation. For temperature sensing, the fiber-tip sensor exhibits a linear response to the temperature in the range 28-40 °C with a sensitivity as high as 1.74 nm °C^-1. To realize linear and sensitive pressure sensing, we design and fabricate a PDMS clamped-beam structure on the fiber tip using a soft lithography technique, achieving a sensitivity of 11.48 nm kPa^-1. Moreover, simultaneous measurement of the temperature and pressure is also demonstrated using the wavelength demodulation method. The simple and cost-effective fabrication of the clamped beam and the transferable GMFs allow for the facile integration of high-quality FP cavities on fiber tips, opening new opportunities for developing optical sensors with miniaturized sizes.

Sensitivity-enhanced Fabry-Perot interferometric fiber-optic microphone using hollow cantilever

Transducer components are crucial in optimizing the sensitivity of microphones. Cantilever structure is commonly used as a structural optimization technique. Here, we present a novel Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometric fiber-optic microphone (FOM) using a hollow cantilever structure. The proposed hollow cantilever aims to reduce the effective mass and spring constant of the cantilever, thereby enhancing the sensitivity of the FOM. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed structure outperforms the original cantilever design in terms of sensitivity. The sensitivity and minimum detectable acoustic pressure level (MDP) can reach 91.40 mV/Pa and 6.20 µPa/Hz at 1.7 kHz, respectively. Notably, the hollow cantilever provides an optimization framework for highly sensitive FOMs.
