The dual journey: The development of twins' relationships throughout childhood

Twin bonds, likely the most enduring of human relationships, provide both solace and rivalry for twins. Using an evolutionary psychology perspective, this chapter scrutinizes twins' bonds from prenatal stages to childhood to better understand their unique relationships. Twins' interactions, which begin in the womb, establish patterns of cooperation and competition. The initial years pose parenting challenges that shape the twins' experiences of dependency and rivalry. As twins grow, five dimensions-closeness, dependence, conflict, rivalry, and dominance-emerge, evolving distinctly between monozygotic twins (MZ: sharing close to 100% of their genes) and dizygotic twins (DZ: sharing on average 50% of their genetic variance). The chapter notes the closer relationship MZ twins share compared to DZ twins. While the closeness and dependence among DZ twins decline throughout childhood, these elements remain stable in MZ twins. The effect of zygosity on conflict and rivalry is less clear. For both MZ and DZ twins, conflict stays steady, while rivalry intensifies with school entry, probably driven by external comparisons, but lessens as twins develop into late childhood. Unlike singletons, where birth order dictates dominance dynamics, in twins, this dynamic is more variable and becomes more defined by around 6.5 years of age. Several factors are presented as impacting the nature of the twins' relationships: the evolvement of 'twin language', the parenting style and the differential parenting they receive. This exploration into the development of twins' relationships underlines the importance of tailored caregiving and invites further research into the genetic and environmental factors that shape close bonds.

Genetics, not the uterine environment, drive the formation of trophoblast inclusions: Insights from a twin study

INTRODUCTION

Trophoblast inclusions (TIs) are associated with aneuploidy and pregnancy loss and have thus been considered to be a marker of genetic abnormality. However, to date, no study has specifically explored whether TIs are a manifestation of fetal genetics or, rather, the result of the intrauterine environment. The goal of this study was to compare the frequency of TIs in the placentas of monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs in order to determine whether the formation of TIs is genetically driven or not.

METHODS

We performed a retrospective case series of placentas from 48 twin pairs. The placentas were grouped based on zygosity: MZ, DZ, or unknown (UZ). The average number of total TIs per slide was calculated for each twin individual and the mean absolute difference in the total TIs per slide between the twin pairs was calculated for each zygosity group and compared.

RESULTS

The mean difference in the total TIs per slide for DZ twins was significantly greater than the mean difference in the total TIs per slide for MZ twins (p = 0.003). The mean difference in the total TIs per slide for the UZ group was also significantly greater than the mean difference in total TIs per slide between MZ twin pairs (p = 0.028).

DISCUSSION

Our finding that MZ twins were significantly more concordant than DZ twins for the average number of TIs per slide supports the conclusion that TIs are intrinsic to the genetics of the fetus, not the uterine environment.

Fullerton Virtual Twin Project: Overview and 2019 Update

Virtual twins (VTs) are defined as same-age unrelated siblings raised together from early infancy. This special class of adoptive siblings replays the rearing situation of twins, absent genetic relatedness. The first such pair was identified and studied in 1990 at the University of Minnesota, leading to the creation of the Fullerton Virtual Twin Study (FVTS) at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) the following year. The registry currently includes 169 VT pairs, mostly children, with new pairs identified on a regular basis. These sibling sets provide a direct estimate of environmental influences on developmental traits and, as such, offer informative comparisons with ordinary monozygotic and dizygotic twins, full siblings and adoptive brothers and sisters. The sample characteristics, assessment battery and findings to date are summarized in this 2019 update.

The Yorùbá of Nigeria are well known for their high twinning rate and the statues they create to commemorate deceased twins. An impressive collection of this artwork was displayed at the University of California's Fowler Museum in Los Angeles between October 13, 2013 and March 2, 2014. An overview of this exhibit is provided. Next, twin research on maternal education and conception, diurnal preference, inherited eye diseases, and ultrasound counseling for couples with conjoined twins are briefly summarized. This article concludes with a discussion of media-based items related to twins. The topics include an award-winning twin film, a rare pregnancy, a diet test, and the separation and chance reunion of monozygotic female twins.

Fullerton Virtual Twin Study: an update

Virtual twins (VTs) are same-age unrelated siblings reared together from early infancy. These unique sibling sets replicate twinship, but without the genetic link. The first VT pair was identified and studied at the University of Minnesota in 1990, launching the development of the Fullerton Virtual Twin Study at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in 1991. The registry currently includes 151 pairs, mostly children, with new pairs identified on a continuous basis. Research with VTs includes studies of general intelligence, body size, interpersonal trust, social coordination, social networks, and parenting. In some cases, VTs have been studied in conjunction with pairs of monozygotic twins, dizygotic twins, full siblings, and friends as part of TAPS (Twins, Adoptees, Peers and Siblings), a collaborative project conducted between CSUF and the University of San Francisco, 2002-2006. VTs will also serve as a comparison group for epigenetic analyses of young Chinese twins reared apart and together.

What Virtual Twins Reveal About General Intelligence and Other Behaviors

The Fullerton Virtual Twin Study has been assessing the behaviors of an unusual sibship since 1982. Virtual twins (VTs) are same-age, unrelated siblings reared together since infancy. They replicate the rearing situation of twins but without the genetic link, enabling direct assessment of shared environmental effects on behavior. An updated analysis of IQ data, based on an increased sample of 142 VT pairs (7.87 years, SD=8.22), is presented. Intraclass correlations of .28 (IQ) and .11 (subtest profile) indicated modest shared environmental influences on intelligence. Findings from the Twins, Adoptees, Peers and Siblings (TAPS) project that studies virtual twins and other kinships are described.
