Untapped potential of non-conventional rubus species: bioactivity, nutrition, and livelihood opportunities

Rubus species holds promise as a valuable source of polyphenols and bioactive compounds, offering significant potential as functional food ingredients with both nutraceutical and pharmaceutical benefits. However, many edible species within this genus remain under-explored and their importance is largely unrecognized. This review aims to provide an overview of the nutritional and bioactive components of both explored and under-explored Rubus species, highlighting their potential health advantages, value addition, and recent advancements. The economic exploitation of Rubus is currently limited to a few cultivated species, while numerous non-conventional and wild edible species are overlooked. Recognizing the economic and nutritional significance of exploited Rubus species, it is imperative to explore the untapped potential of these underutilized plants. By doing so, these species can be preserved from endangerment and contribute to nutritional and livelihood security for communities having access to them. This review emphasizes the importance of understanding the exceptional characteristics of Rubus species as "superfoods" and encourages the promotion and cultivation of these unexplored species. By expanding the cultivation and utilization of under-explored Rubus species, we can unlock their full potential and support sustainable nutritional and economic benefits.

Combination Anticancer Therapies Using Selected Phytochemicals

Cancer is still one of the most widespread diseases globally, it is considered a vital health challenge worldwide and one of the main barriers to long life expectancy. Due to the potential toxicity and lack of selectivity of conventional chemotherapeutic agents, discovering alternative treatments is a top priority. Plant-derived natural products have high potential in cancer treatment due to their multiple mechanisms of action, diversity in structure, availability in nature, and relatively low toxicity. In this review, the anticancer mechanisms of the most common phytochemicals were analyzed. Furthermore, a detailed discussion of the anticancer effect of combinations consisting of natural product or natural products with chemotherapeutic drugs was provided. This review should provide a strong platform for researchers and clinicians to improve basic and clinical research in the development of alternative anticancer medicines.

Anthocyanins Potentially Contribute to Defense against Alzheimer's Disease

Anthocyanins (ANTs) are plant pigments that belong to a flavanol class of polyphenols and have diverse pharmacological properties. These compounds are primarily found in fruits and vegetables, with an average daily intake of 180 mgd-1 of these compounds in the developed world. ANTs are potent antioxidants that might regulate the free radical-mediated generation of amyloid peptides (Abeta-amyloids) in the brain, which causes Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study presents a literature review of ANTs from different berries and their potential therapeutic value, with particular emphasis on neurodegenerative AD, which owing to oxidative stress. This review also highlights reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through energy metabolism, nitrogen reactive species, the role of transition metals in generating ROS, and the radical-quenching mechanisms of natural antioxidants, including ANTs. The current status of the bioavailability, solubility, and structure activity relationship of ANTs is discussed herein.

Assessment of unloaded polymeric nanocapsules with different coatings in female rats: Influence on toxicological and behavioral parameters

The unloaded polymeric nanocapsules (NCs) present incredible characteristics as drug carriers. However, the toxicity caused by NCs with different coatings is still a challenge for contemporary toxicology. Allied to this, preclinical studies are performed in males, disregarding possible gender-dependent toxicity. Thus, the aim of present study was to evaluate the influence of different NCs coatings on toxicological and behavioral parameters in female rats. The physicochemical characterization of NCs with different surface coatings: NC1 (Polysorbate 80), NC2 (PEG), NC3 (Eudragit®RS 100) and NC4 (Chitosan) were performed. Female rats were treated with saline, NC1, NC2, NC3 or NC4 daily for 14 days, p.o. After 24 h of last treatment, animals were submitted to behavioral tests. Only after behavioral tests, female rats were euthanized, organs were removed and weighted. After, histopathological, biochemical and oxidative stress analysis were performed. All NCs-coatings did not cause alterations in behavioral tests. For markers of hepatic, renal damage and lipid profile, the different coatings showed a low toxicity. NCs did not alter weight of organs and histopathological analysis. Also, all NCs-coatings did not modify redox balance in organs studied, only NC2 induced a increase of FRAP levels in intestine. This study demonstrated that the different NCs-coatings did not cause behavioral changes and showed a low toxicity in female rats.
