Abstract
This is a case report of a patient with vulvar condyloma acuminatum associated with hyperkeratosis and folliculitis, which had been refractory to two previous therapies. The patient had been successfully treated using a combination of promising techniques: the ultrasonic scalpel and MAL photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Aminolaevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) is increasingly applied for the treatment of condyloma acuminata (CA). However, the determinants for the sessions and end points of ALA-PDT treatment remains unclear. Here, we recorded HPV screening, evaluated the frequency and efficacy of ALA-PDT in different types of CA, in order to individualize ALA-PDT treatment to CA. METHODS A total of 227 CA patients with HPV infection and visible warts were recruited. Prior to PDT, visible lesions were removed by radio frequency or microwave. HPV DNA detection were performed before each PDT treatment and at follow-up. Treatment was ended after two consecutive negative HPV DNA detection. RESULTS Of the 227 patients, 119 patients received ALA-PDT and 116 patients completed all treatments. We found that CA patients with multiple-site infection, intra-luminal infection or multiple-type of HPV infection required more sessions of ALA-PDT. The recurrence rate was 8.62% (10/116). Viral load was significantly lower after six PDT treatments compared to viral load after three PDT treatments. Gender, HPV subtypes and warts location had no significant effect on the recurrence rate. CONCLUSION Comprehensive evaluation of HPV infection state helps to individualize ALA-PDT treatment scheme for CA patients and predict the therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Condylomata acuminata, or genital warts (GW), are exceedingly prevalent, with human papilloma virus infection accounting for 90% of cases. It can be treated in a variety of methods, but the high recurrence rate and cervical scars make it difficult to choose the best treatment option. Hence, the study aims to find the effect of laser combined with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) photodynamic therapy for condyloma acuminata in the vulva, vagina, and cervix. METHODS A total of 106 female patients with GW of the vulva, vagina, and cervical condyloma acuminata were treated in the Dermatology Department of Subei People's Hospital in Yangzhou from May 2020 to July 2021. All these patients were treated with laser combined with 5-ALA photodynamic therapy to observe the therapeutic effect. RESULTS About 84.9% of patients responded to the first session of ALA-photodynamic treatment. Five patients relapsed in the 2nd week, two patients relapsed in the 4th week, one relapsed in the 8th week, one relapsed in the 12th week, and the relapsed patients were given 1-3 times of photodynamic therapy again, and no recurrence was seen in the 24th week. After four courses of treatment in 106 patients, the wart clearance rate was 100%. CONCLUSION Laser combined with 5-ALA photodynamic therapy for female vulva, vagina, and cervix condyloma acuminata has a reliable curative effect, low recurrence rate, few adverse reactions, and less pain. It is worth promoting in female vulva, vagina, and cervical condyloma acuminata.

Abstract
Oral proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is a potentially malignant disorder with high rates of recurrence and malignant transformation. Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is often refractory to various treatments, including topical drugs, surgical resection, cryotherapy, and laser therapy. Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy is an innovative and effective treatment for potentially malignant oral disorders and has the potential to control the recurrence of precancerous lesions and cancer. Various pre-treatments or combined therapies have been proposed to increase the efficacy of topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy, especially for large, thick, or highly keratinised lesions. We report a case of refractory proliferative verrucous leukoplakia in a 58-year-old female patient who showed rapid recurrence within 1 week of topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy despite pre-treatment with microneedle puncture, combined intralesional injection of 5-aminolevulinic acid, and shortened treatment interval. We applied three sessions of topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy combined with diode laser drilling pre-treatment at 1-week intervals, which successfully eradicated the lesions without any adverse effects and without any signs of recurrence at the 10-month follow-up. Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy combined with diode laser drilling pre-treatment is safe and well-tolerated and could have synergistic efficacy against refractory oral proliferative verrucous leukoplakia.

Abstract
Oral leukoplakia (OL), a predominantly white change to the oral mucosa, is the most common potentially malignant lesion. Elimination of this condition, especially high risk OL, is advisable, even necessary as an attempt to avoid malignant transformation. Here we present three cases of OL successfully treated by ALA photodynamic therapy (PDT) following pretreatment with CO2 laser. After a series of one to three sessions the patients were monitored for 12 months. All lesions showed remission, but one recurred during follow-up. Side effects included mild edema, erosion and burning sensation. No severe side effects were observed. In summary, the combination of PDT and CO2 laser is safe and effective in the treatment of OL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and condyloma acuminatum (CA) in the genital area often exist in extensive and multi-point fashion. Laser ablation combined with topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a feasible approach for genital CA but its effectiveness and limitations need to be evaluated. METHODS This single-arm prospective study consisted of 100 newly diagnosed CA cases of both sexes. All patients underwent laser ablation and then three times aminolaevulinic acid-based photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT). The outcomes were evaluated and analyzed 3 months after the treatment. RESULTS A total of 98 patients completed the study. Except for 6 patients (4 males and 2 females) showed some residual lesions other 92 patients (93.8%) showed complete cure. However, there were 18 patients (10 males and 8 females) showed new lesions near the treated areas. Although the HPV types of 18 patients before and after treatment were not completely consistent, 94.4% percent of patients (17/18) had the same HPV type as the primary lesion, which suggested that these late-onset CA might have latent infection or subclinical infection in the early stage of the disease but the length of the incubation period was longer. CONCLUSION Combination approach is effective in treating genital CA and preventing CA recurrence. But its limitations need to be recognized as the late-onset CA might occur near the treated area. The treatment plan needs to be optimized for multiple genital CA lesions.

Abstract
The microorganisms that cause infections are increasing their resistance to antibiotics. In this context, alternative treatments are necessary. The antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a therapeutic modality based on photosensitizing molecules that end up generating reactive oxygen species that induce the destruction of the target cells when are irradiated with light of a suitable wavelength and at a proper dose. The cells targeted by aPDT are all types of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and parasites) including viruses and has been proven effective against representative members of all of them. In the field of dermatology, aPDT has been tested with promising results in different infections such as chronic ulcers, acne, onychomycosis and other cutaneous mycoses, as well as in leishmaniasis. Therefore, it is presented as a possible treatment option against the agents that cause skin and/or mucous infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy on keratinocyte proliferation and apoptosis in condyloma acuminatum tissues was evaluated. METHODS An immunohistochemical method and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling were performed to detect the positive expression of the keratinocyte proliferation-related gene Ki-67 and apoptosis, respectively, in condyloma acuminatum tissues. RESULTS Of 52 cases, 44 showed positive expression of Ki-67 in condyloma acuminatum keratinocytes before the treatment, with a positive expression rate of 84.62% (44/52), an expression strength of mostly ++ - +++, and a Ki-67 proliferation index of 80.26±5.07%. After treatment, 22 cases showed positive expression of Ki-67 in condyloma acuminatum keratinocytes, with a positive expression rate of 42.31% (22/52), an expression strength of mostly - - ++, and a proliferation index of 42.67±3.06%. The differences in the positive expression rate, expression strength, and proliferation index in the before- and after-treatment groups were statistically significant (χ2=20.070, P<0.001). For visible apoptotic cells in condyloma acuminatum keratinocytes before the 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic treatment, the expression strength was mostly + - ++, and the average apoptotic index was 13.94±2.35%; after treatment, the expression strength was mostly ++ - +++, and the average apoptotic index was 73.88±7.65%; the difference in the apoptotic index between the before and after treatment groups was statistically significant (P<0.001). CONCLUSION 5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy can inhibit the proliferation and promote the apoptosis of keratinocytes, and represents an effective mechanism for treating condyloma acuminatum.

Abstract
Objective. To assess the efficiency and tolerability of the Mardil Zinc Max, solution for external application, in topical therapy of patients with anogenital warts. Materials and methods. The study involved 58 women and 12 men at the age of 18 to 57 years old, suffering from anogenital warts. the diagnosis was confirmed by identification of human papillomavirus by the polymerase chain reaction in real time. All the patients were treated by the chemical destruction of anogenital warts with the 1.5% solution of zinc chloropropionate in 50% 2-chloropropionic acid (Mardil Zinc Max) by a single application of the solution on the pathological eruptions. The results of treatment were assessed in 2 weeks, in 1, 3, 6 and 9 months after the destructive therapy. Results. In 2 weeks 62 (88.6%) patients showed a clinical cure with complete tissue regeneration in the lesions, in 8 (11,4%) cases in areas of the preparation erosions were visualized in the epithelialization phase, and they completely resolved within 1 week. recurrences of anogenital warts were detected in 1 (1,4%) patient in the observation period up to 3 months and in 2 (2,8%) patients during 9 months after carrying out the destruction. Adverse drug events have not been identified in the course of therapy and follow-up. Conclusions. As a result of the treatment of anogenital warts with the Mardil Zinc Max high rate of performance and security was set (100%), as well as the low percentage (4,2%) of development of relapses.

Abstract
Sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS) is a newly identified photosensitizer that was isolated from Photofrin. Experimental and clinical results have demonstrated that repeated application of PDT greatly improved the therapeutic efficacy. Here, we comparatively studied two kinds of photodynamic therapy (PDT) strategies by using DVDMS (2mg/kg) in murine breast cancer 4T1 xenograft model to provide evidence which strategy exerts a better antitumor effect. Regimen (1): DVDMS was injected one time into tumor-bearing mice, which were then repeatedly exposed to 50J/cm(2) light 24h, 30h and 36h later. Regimen (2): DVDMS was injected 3 times and mice exposed to 50J/cm(2) light 24h after each injection, with 5days intervals between each DVDMS injection. On day 21 after the tumor cell injection, in regimen (1) the tumor volume inhibition ratio was reached to 85.75±7.60%. While at the same day the inhibition ratio was 65.74±8.64% of regimen (2). Additionally, regimen (1) appeared to more effectively initiate tumor tissue destruction and cancer cell apoptosis, inhibit lung metastasis, suppress cancer cell proliferation and angiogenesis. Moreover, no obvious effect on body weight and other side effects were observed in the treated mice. These results suggest that regimen (1) might be a potentially efficient strategy against breast cancer.

Abstract
The most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) is infection by human papillomavirus. There are more than 100 types of human papillomavirus, and over 30 of them involve the genital area. Urethral involvement is uncommon and usually limited to the distal 3 cm of the meatus. There are various treatments for urethral condylomas; as a rule, they are limited by a difficult approach, by recurrences, and by potential complications, the most significant of which is urethral stenosis. The purpose of the treatments is to remove the warts and induce lesion-free periods. Such treatments do not eliminate the infection nor do they prevent continued transmission of the virus. We retrospectively evaluated 123 patients diagnosed and treated for condylomas in the genital area at our Institution between April 2009 and April 2012. The patients’ mean age was 28.7 years (range 19–51). Of the 123 patients included, 48 (39%) had a history of previous STIs, most frequently gonococcal urethritis. Three of them had a urethral malformation in the form of hypospadias, and another three reported a previous urologic manipulation (catheterisation). Meatal/urethral condylomas are rare, cryotherapy is simple, easy to apply, and has a very low risk of complications in patients with externally accessible warts.
