Abstract
BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been recently proposed as a promising alternative therapy for Denture Stomatitis (DS). The present systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the current available evidence regarding the efficacy of PDT in the management of DS. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQuest were searched up to June 7, 2023. All relevant clinical trials were included. RevMan software was used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS Elven randomized clinical trials (460 DS patients) were included. Eight studies assessed the efficacy of PDT vs. topical antifungal therapy, while three studies assessed the adjunctive use of PDT (PDT + antifungal therapy) vs. topical antifungal therapy alone. The results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and conventional antifungal therapy on candida colonization at 15 days (MD: 0.95, 95% CI: -0.28, 2.19, p = 0.13) and at the end of follow-up (MD: -0.17, 95% CI: -1.33, 0.98, p = 0.77). The pooled two studies revealed relatively better efficacy of adjunctive use of PDT with antifungal therapy on candida colonization compared to antifungal therapy alone at 15 days (MD: -6.67, 95% CI: -15.15, 1.82, p = 0.12), and at the end of follow-up (MD: -7.14, 95% CI: -19.78, 5.50, p = 0.27). Additionally, the results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and topical antifungal therapy on the clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS PDT might be considered a viable option for DS either as an adjunct or as an alternative to the topical antifungal medications. Further studies with adequate sample sizes and standardized PDT parameters are warranted.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking (CS) is a crucial modifiable risk of developing several human diseases and cancers. It causes lung, bladder, breast, and esophageal cancers, respiratory disorders, as well as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Because of these adverse health effects, continual efforts to decrease the prevalence and toxicity of CS are imperative. Until the past decades, the impacts of natural compounds have been under investigation on the harmful effects of CS. Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, is the main source of curcumin. This review is an attempt to find out the current knowledge on CS's harmful effects and protective potential of curcumin in the pulmonary, liver, brain, gastrointestinal, and testis organs. According to the present review, simultaneous consumption of curcumin and CS can attenuate CS toxicities including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal toxicity, metabolic diseases, testis injury, and neurotoxicity. Moreover, curcumin suppresses carcinogenesis in the skin, liver, lungs, breast, colon, and stomach. Curcumin mediates these protective effects through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-carcinogenicity properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus that causes superficial and deep infections, which can be minor to life-threatening. Recently, P. aeruginosa has gained significant relevance due to the increased incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains that complicate antibiotic treatment. Due to MDR strains, alternative therapies, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT), are presented as a good option to treat nonsystemic infections. PDT combines a photosensitizer agent (PS), light, and oxygen to generate free radicals that destroy bacterial structures such as the envelope, matrix, and genetic material. This work aimed to identify the development stage of the PDT applied to P. aeruginosa to conclude which research stage should be emphasized more. METHODS Systematic bibliographic search in various public databases was performed. Related articles were identified using keywords, and relevant ones were selected using inclusion and exclusion criteria according to the PRISMA protocol. RESULTS We found 29 articles that meet the criteria, constituting a good body of evidence associated with using PDT against P. aeruginosa in vitro and less developed for in vivo research. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that PDT could become an effective adjunct to antimicrobial therapy against P. aeruginosa. This effectiveness depends on the PS used and the location of the infection. Many PS already demonstrated efficacy in PDT, but the evidence is supported significantly by in vitro and very few in vivo studies. Therefore, we conclude that further research efforts should focus on demonstrating the safety and efficacy of these PSs in vivo in animal infection models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct or alternative to traditional antifungal drugs in the treatment of oral candidiasis, and to provide evidence-based medical evidence for its use in the treatment of oral candidiasis. METHODS Computer combined with manual retrieval of China Academic Journals Full-text Database (CNKI), China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), Wanfang Database, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus retrieval for articles published before January 2023, basic information and required data were extracted according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the Revman V5.4 software was used to conduct Meta-analysis of the included literature. RESULTS A total of 11 articles were included, 7 of which used nystatin as an antifungal drug, 2 of which were combined treatment of PDT and nystatin, 2 of the remaining 4 articles were treated with fluconazole, and 2 were treated with miconazole. Meta results showed that PDT was superior to nystatin in reducing the number of oral candida colonies in the palate of patients MD = -0.87, 95%CI = (-1.52,-0.23), P = 0.008, the difference was statistically significant, and the denture site MD = -1.03, 95%CI = (-2.21, -0.15), P = 0.09, the difference was not statistically significant; compared with the efficacy of fluconazole, RR = 1.01, 95%CI = (0.56,1.83), P = 0.96; compared with miconazole RR = 0.55, 95%CI = (0.38, 0.81), P = 0.002; PDT combined with nystatin RR = 1.27, 95%CI = (1.06, 1.52), P = 0.01; recurrence rate RR = 0.28, 95%CI = (0.09, 0.88), P = 0.03. CONCLUSIONS PDT was effective in the treatment of oral candidiasis; PDT was more effective than nystatin for the treatment of denture stomatitis in the palate, while there was no significant difference between the two for the denture site; The efficacy of PDT for oral candidiasis was similar to that of fluconazole; PDT was less effective than miconazole for oral candidiasis; Compared with nystatin alone, the combination of PDT and nystatin is more effective in treating oral candidiasis with less risk of recurrence.

Abstract
Oral infection is a common clinical symptom. While antibiotics are widely employed as the primary treatment for oral diseases, the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria has necessitated the exploration of alternative therapeutic approaches. One such modality is antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), which utilizes light and photosensitizers. Indeed, aPDT has been used alone or in combination with other treatment options dealing with periodontal disease for the elimination of biofilms from bacterial community to achieve bone formation and/or tissue regeneration. In this review article, in addition to factors affecting the efficacy of aPDT, various photosensitizers, the latest technology and perspectives on aPDT are discussed in detail. More importantly, the article emphasizes the novel design and clinical applications of photosensitizers, as well as the synergistic effects of chemical and biomolecules with aPDT to achieve the complete eradication of biofilms and even enhance the biological performance of tissues surrounding the treated oral area.

Abstract
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used for thousands of years for the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases. Curcumin is just one of >200 ingredients in turmeric. Almost 7000 scientific papers on turmeric and almost 20,000 on curcumin have been published in PubMed. Scientific reports based on cell culture or animal studies are often not reproducible in humans. Therefore, human clinical trials are the best indicators for the prevention and treatment of a disease using a given agent/drug. Herein, we conducted an extensive literature survey on PubMed and Scopus following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The keywords "turmeric and clinical trials" and "curcumin and clinical trials" were considered for data mining. A total of 148 references were found to be relevant for the key term "turmeric and clinical trials", of which 70 were common in both PubMed and Scopus, 44 were unique to PubMed, and 34 were unique to Scopus. Similarly, for the search term "curcumin and clinical trials", 440 references were found to be relevant, of which 70 were unique to PubMed, 110 were unique to Scopus, and 260 were common to both databases. These studies show that the golden spice has enormous health and medicinal benefits for humans. This Review will extract and summarize the lessons learned about turmeric and curcumin in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases based on clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present report assessed the efficacy of curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy (CUR-mediated PDT) as an adjunct to antifungal gel treatment by evaluating the salivary interleukin-6 (IL-6) and matrix metalloproteinases-8 (MMP-8) levels together with Candida species counts in denture stomatitis (DS) patients. METHODS In total, 50 DS subjects were randomly categorized into 2 groups: Group-1: subjects who received the antifungal gel treatment and Group-2: participants who received CUR-mediated PDT. The Sabourad Dextrose Agar and CHROMAgar were utilized for evaluating Candida species counts, while the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay was employed to estimate the salivary levels of IL-6 and MMP-8. All clinical evaluations were performed at the baseline, 1 month, and 2 months. RESULTS In total, group-2 subjects showed a significant decrease in Candida albicans (C. albicans) counts on both follow-ups (i.e., 1-month and 2-month) than group-1 participants. C. krusei count also reduced in group-2 subejcts than group-1 participants at the 2nd follow-up as compared to the baseline, nevertheless, a slight increase in C. krusei count was noticed in group-2 subjects at the 2nd follow-up than the 1st follow-up. The salivary IL-6 and MMP-8 levels in both groups reduced significantly at both follow-ups than the baseline. According to the stepwise logistic regression analysis, no statistically significant correlation was observed between Candida species count and other parameters such as age and gender of the patient, duration of DS, and frequency of treatment(s). CONCLUSION CUR-mediated PDT is an efficaciousness therapeutic modality for alleviating Candida species counts on the surface of denture and the palatal mucosa, as well as improving the salivary IL-6 and MMP-8 levels in DS patients.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to assess the bond integrity of curcumin photosensitizer (CPS) Photodynamic therapy (PDT) on fiber post disinfection bonded to radicular dentin in comparison to the conventional fiber post sterilant used. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty human permanent single-rooted premolars were utilized with the crown part sectioned using up to the cementoenamel junction. Root canal preparation was performed followed by canal obturation with gutta-percha (GP) and resin-based sealer. The post space was prepared using peso reamers leaving 4 mm at the apical part of the post space. Fifty glass fiber posts (GFP) were divided into five groups based on the surface disinfectant (n = 10). group 1: Autoclave sterilization (AS) group 2: chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX dig), group 3: CPS solution, group 4: 35% phosphoric acid (PA) gel, and group 5: No disinfection. Cementation was performed using dual-cure self-etch resin cement. Each tooth was sectioned and placed on the universal testing machine. Failure mode was analyzed using a stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests. (p = 0.05). RESULTS Intragroup comparison analysis demonstrated that group 2 in which 2% CHX dig was used as a post-surface disinfectant revealed the highest bond integrity at all three levels. Group 5 where no disinfectant was used to decontaminate the post surface exhibited the lowest bond values. In all the investigated groups, PBS values showed a downward trend from coronal to the apical third of the post space. Group 1 in which AS was used to sterilize the fiber post and group 3 in which CPS was smeared to decontaminate the GFPs surface-displayed comparable outcomes of PBS to group 5 specimens at all three levels. (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION CHX dig and PA post-surface disinfection displayed a positive impact on bond strength with the radicular dentin. However, CPS and AS do not reveal any effect on the PBS when used for post-decontamination.

Abstract
AIM To assess and equate the efficacy of different disinfection protocols autoclave, chlorhexidine (CHX), PDT utilizing Rose Bengal (RB), chitosan, and Er, Yag laser and their effect on fracture strength of PMMA denture-based polymer (DBP) colonized with C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 50 (n = 10) PMMA DBP were manufactured and adulterated with the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) of diverse microbial colonies inhabited by C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli. The specimens were subjected to different denture disinfection approaches by randomly distributing in into five groups i.e., Er, Yag laser, RB, autoclave, CHX, and Chitosan, respectively for appraising antimicrobial effectiveness. PMMA fracture load was also assessed and statistical analysis was performed for CFU/mL (log10) of exposed C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test at a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS Intergroup comparison disclosed that denture disinfection with Er, Yag laser, autoclave, Chitosan, and CHX (control) validated comparable antimicrobial efficacy to denture against all inspected CFU/mL (log10) (p>0.05). The intragroup comparison revealed that DBP sanitization with Er, Yag laser, autoclave, Chitosan, RB, and CHX substantiated equivalent effective antimicrobial efficacy in plummeting CFU/mL (log10) of S. mutans and E. coli (p>0.05) but in consideration to S.aureus and C.albicans, all groups resulted in declining their count except 5µm RB activated by PDT(p < 0.05). No significant difference was perceived in fracture load of PMMA denture base among Er, Yag laser, RB, chitosan, and CHX (control) (p > 0.05) except autoclave decontamination procedure that indicated the least fracture strength of DBP when disinfected (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Er, Yag laser, and Chitosan activated by PDT have the potential to be used as an alternative to chlorhexidine for disinfecting Polymethyl methacrylate denture base as they demonstrated the highest antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, C. Albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans with optimal fracture load.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis is the most common opportunistic fungal infection caused by commensal Candida species. Since there are various local and systemic predisposing factors for the disease, the treatment also varies from topical to systemic antifungal agents. Nystatin is a common antifungal agent used topically. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of different antifungal agents and the safety of nystatin in the treatment of oral candidiasis. Three electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials comparing nystatin with other anti-fungal therapies or placebo. Clinical and/or mycological cure was the outcome evaluation. A meta-analysis and descriptive study on the efficacy, treatment protocols, and safety of nystatin was also conducted. The meta-analysis included five studies, which compared the efficacy of nystatin suspensions with photodynamic therapy. A significant difference in the colony-forming units per milliliters (CFU/mL) of Candida species was observed at 60 days intervals for both palatal mucosa and denture surfaces, with both groups favoring nystatin with low heterogeneity at a 95% confidence interval. Nystatin and photodynamic therapy were found to be equally effective for the clinical remission of denture stomatitis as well as a significant reduction of CFU/mL of Candida species from dentures and palatal surfaces of the patients.

Abstract
The influence of chitosan (CS) and amphiphilic polymers (AP: pluronic F108 and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)) on the photocatalytic activity of rose bengal (RB) in a model reaction of tryptophan photo-oxidation in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was studied. It was shown that in the presence of CS, the effective rate constant keff of tryptophan photo-oxidation catalyzed by RB in PBS solution decreases by a factor of two. This is due to the ionic interaction of the RB with the chitosan. Rose bengal in a slightly acidic environment (pH 4.5) passes into a neutral lactone form, which sharply reduces the photosensitizing properties of the dye. It was demonstrated that the introduction of AP into a solution containing RB and CS prevents direct interaction between RB and CS. This is evidenced by the presence of photocatalytic activity of the dye in the RB-AP-CS systems, as well as bathochromic shifts of the main absorption bands of the dye, and an increase in the optical density and luminescence intensity of the RB when AP is introduced into a buffer solution containing RB and chitosan. The presence of RB-CS and RB-AP interaction in aqueous and PBS media is confirmed by the increase in the degree of fluorescence anisotropy (r) of these binary systems. In an aqueous solution, the value of r for the RB-F108-CS system decreases by a factor of 3.5 (compared to the value of r for the RB-CS system), which is associated with the localization of the dye in pluronic micelles. In PBS, the fluorescence anisotropy is practically the same for all systems, which is related to the stability of the dye structure in this medium. The presence of interaction between RB and AP in aqueous solutions was confirmed by the proton NMR method. In addition, the formation of RB-F108 macromolecular complexes, which form associates during solution concentration (in particular, during evaporation), was shown by AFM. Such RB-AP-CS systems may be promising for practical application in the treatment of local foci of infections by aPDT.

Abstract
In order, to understand the antimicrobial action of photodynamic therapy and how this technique can contribute to its application in the control of pathogens. The objective of the study was to employ a proteomic approach to investigate the protein profile of S. aureus after antimicrobial photodynamic therapy mediated by rose bengal (RB-aPDT). S. aureus was treated with RB (10 nmol/l) and illuminated with green LED (0.17 J/cm2 ) for cell viability evaluation. Afterward, proteomic analysis was employed for protein identification and bioinformatic tools to classify the differentially expressed proteins. The reduction of S. aureus after photoinactivation was ~2.5 log CFU/ml. A total of 12 proteins (four up-regulated and eight down-regulated), correspond exclusively to alteration by RB-aPDT. Functionally these proteins are distributed in protein binding, structural constituent of ribosome, proton transmembrane transporter activity, and ATPase activity. The effects of photodamage include alterations of levels of several proteins resulting in an activated stress response, altered membrane potential, and effects on energy metabolism. These 12 proteins required the presence of both light and RB suggesting a unique response to photodynamic effects. The information about this technique contributes valuable insights into bacterial mechanisms and the mode of action of photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Objectives: Tobacco consumption is of major concern for public health. Compromised oral hygiene accentuated by tobacco leads to alteration in the oral mucosa and microbiome, including Candida, and its species can be identified rapidly using CHROMagar. Curcumin, a naturally available compound possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-carcinogenic, anti-fungal, and immunomodulatory properties. Hence, a comprehensive study was planned. Aim: To evaluate and compare cytomorphometric analysis and Candida colonization and speciation in tobacco users before and after the use of curcumin gel. Materials and Methods: The study comprised a total of 120 participants (the study (tobacco habit) group, n = 60 and control (healthy) group, n = 60). The intervention was the application of curcumin gel over the lesion area three times daily for 2 months. All participants’ oral health status was assessed, followed by cytomorphometric analysis and Candida colonization and speciation using CHROMagar. Results: Cytomorphometric analysis showed statistically significant differences in the control and study group for cell diameter (CD), nuclear diameter (ND), CD:ND ratio, and micronuclei (p = 0.0001). Candida colonization had a significantly higher number of colonies in the habit group when compared to the control group. Candida tropicalis was predominant in the study group, whereas Candida albicans was predominant in the control group. In the study group, after intervention with curcumin, a statistically significant difference was seen in nuclear diameter, CD:ND ratio, and micronuclei. There was a reduction in the number of Candida colonies, and Candida albicans was the predominant species observed in the study group after the intervention of curcumin and discontinuation of habit. Conclusion: Curcumin was found to reduce the number of micronuclei and also decreased Candida colonization, along with the discontinuation of habit in tobacco users.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to assess the effect of PDT, herbal and chemical disinfectants on the dental pathogen adherence to soft denture liner colonized with E. coli, C. Albicans, S.aureus, and S. mutans. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 20 samples of soft-lined removable acrylic complete dentures were fabricated and subjected to the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) for the inoculation of E.coli, C.albicans, S.mutans and S.aureus in an in-vitro setup. The samples were then randomly divided into four groups and immersed in group 1: 5 µm of Rose Bengal (RB), group 2: Neem extract, group 3: Tea tree oil (TTO), and group 4: 0.12% CHX solutions respectively. Statistical analysis was accomplished by the SPSS 10 statistical software for Windows at a significance level p< 0.05. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test were used to analyze the data and compare the means and standard deviation values of CFU/mL (log10) for exposed E. coli, C. albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans. RESULTS Intragroup comparison indicated E.coli and C.albicans did not unveil a decrease in reduction CFU/mL (log10) when SDL irradiated with RB 5 µm. Whereas, CFU/mL (log10) values of S.aureus; 2.62±0.68 CFU/mL and S.mutans: 3.41±0.13 CFU/mL plunged significantly (p<0.05). Likewise, S. aureus and S. mutans CFU/mL (log10) strain values display reduction when treated with all four disinfectants while the count of C.albicans unveiled a significant plunge with CHX, TTO and neem extract except RB (p<0.05) CONCLUSION: 0.12% CHX and TTO have enhanced antimicrobial efficacy in reducing adhered bacterial colonies of E.coli, C.albicans, S.aureus, and S.mutans (CFU)/mL on a denture soft liner.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to appraise the effect of Diode laser (DL), riboflavin, and curcumin on the bond strength of adhesive restorative material and the effects of pretreatment on microleakage scores. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety caries-free human permanent premolars were obtained and disinfected. All specimens were mounted till CEJ. To provide standardization, a 2 × 2 mm flat non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) dentin surface was exposed. This was followed by dentin surface roughening/cervical groove preparation with a round bur. After tooth surface preparation, ninety specimens were divided arbitrarily into three groups. Group 1: NCCL exposed to DL; group 2: NCCL pretreated with riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP) and group 3 pretreated with curcumin photosensitizer (CP). All the three groups were further divided into two subgroups A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 based on the restorative material used (n=15). Subgroup A1, B1, and C1 were restored with composite resin (CR). Subgroup A2, B2, and C2 were restored with RMGIC. Ten samples from each subgroup were evaluated for shear bond strength (SBS) testing under a universal testing machine (UTM). Five from each subgroup were evaluated for microleakage assessment. Bond strength and microleakage analysis were performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Post-hoc test (Tukey's post hoc test) at a significance level (p=0.05). RESULTS The group A1, DL-CR shows the highest SBS (16.41± 0.4 MPa). However, CP-RMGIC groups demonstrated the lowest bond integrity. RFP-CR and the DL-CR group displayed comparable outcomes of SBS (p>0.05). The highest microleakage was observed with CP-RMGIC. The least microleakage was displayed by DL-CR. CONCLUSION Noncarious cervical lesions pretreated with diode laser and riboflavin photosensitizer showed better shear bond strength and reduced microleakage when bonded to composite resin than non-carious cervical lesions pretreated with curcumin.

Abstract
Purpose This meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) compared to conventional nystatin therapy (NYT) in reducing Candida colony count in patients with Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS) and critically appraised the available literature.Methods This meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) updated guidelines. A literature search was performed in four electronic databases to identify relevant articles up to 15 August 2021. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy of aPDT compared to NYT in reducing Candida colony count in patients with CADS were investigated. The weighted mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval were calculated. The I2 statistic was used to determine heterogeneity at the level of α = 0.10. The Cochrane risk of bias (RoB 2) tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Certainty of the evidence was determined using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) ranking system.Results Only three eligible RCTs with 141 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Based on the pooled results, NYT compared to aPDT generally performed better in reducing Candida colony count (Log10 CFU/mL) in patients' palate and patients' denture. The included studies had a moderate risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence was low.Conclusion Although still inconclusive, based on the current evidence, aPDT may be effective in reducing Candida colony count and treating CADS. Nonetheless, it does not appear to be more effective than conventional NYT in this regard. According to the limited number of included studies, more well-designed RCTs with larger sample sizes and standardised methodology should be conducted to validate this conclusion.

Abstract
AIM To assess the effectiveness of chemical, ultrasonic and photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated disinfection against in-vitro biofilms colonized with C. albicans, S. oralis, and S. aureus on surfaces of PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) denture base material. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty plates of PMMA were prepared with two different surface topography (rough and polished) analyzed by profilometry. Provenance culture (ATCC) of C. albicans, S. oralis, and S. aureus were inoculated on specimens and exposed to disinfection. The disinfection included Rosebengal (RB) 5 μM activated by a red LED, 2% glutaraldehyde, 70% Isopropyl alcohol, ultrasonic disinfection, and saline solution as a control. The antimicrobial efficacy was assessed by subsequently calculating viable counts after disinfection. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Post Hoc test. RESULTS The unpolished surface demonstrated the highest average surface roughness As 5.32±0.36 (μm) and root mean square roughness Rr 7.22±0.81 (μm) compared to the polished surface. Intergroup comparison demonstrated polished and rough PMMA plate disinfected with rose bengal, glutaraldehyde and alcohol-based disinfection exhibited comparable reduction against C. albicans and S. oralis CFU/mL (log10) (p>0.05). Whereas, this reduction was significantly higher on the rough and polished surface of PMMA when disinfected using ultrasounds for 30 sec (p<0.05). Rose Bengal was the most effective method of disinfection against S. aureus both on polished (0.17±0.13) and rough (0.44±0.22) denture plates (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The ultrasonic disinfection was most effective in reducing viable microbial counts. RB mediated PDT exhibited a more substantial reduction of the colonies of S.aureus.
