A study protocol for the modified interactive screening program plus MINDBODYSTRONG© RCT: A mental health resiliency intervention for nurses

BACKGROUND

Nurses, the largest workforce in healthcare, are at high risk of depression, anxiety, burnout, and suicidal ideation. Suicide among nurses is higher than the general population. This randomized controlled trial pairs the MINDBODYSTRONG© cognitive-behavioral skills building program with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) Modified Interactive Screening Program (mISP) to reduce depression, suicidal ideation, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and burnout, and improve healthy lifestyle beliefs, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and job satisfaction in nurses with moderate to high risk of suicide.

AIMS

This study aims to determine the effects of the mISP combined with the digitized MINDBODYSTRONG© program versus the mISP alone on depression, suicidal ideation, burnout, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, healthy lifestyle beliefs, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and job satisfaction in 364 U.S. nurses.

METHODS

A digitized version of MINDBODYSTRONG© combined with the mISP screening and referral platform will be compared to the AFSP mISP alone through a two-arm randomized controlled trial. Follow-up post-intervention data will be collected at week eight and months three, six, and 12.

DISCUSSION

If successful, this study's findings could assist nurses who are hesitant to use conventional mental health resources by providing them with confidential aid and learning opportunities to reduce suicidality, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and burnout and improve healthy lifestyle beliefs, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and job satisfaction.

Psychometric Properties of the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale in Portuguese Pregnant Women

BACKGROUND

Pregnancy provides a privileged and opportune moment to implement interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors and significantly improving perinatal outcomes. The Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBES) can be used to assess health promoting behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and mental health.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the HLBES in Portuguese pregnant women.

METHODS

A methodological study was conducted on a convenience sample of 192 pregnant women receiving prenatal care. After cross-cultural adaptation, an exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency assessment were carried out to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale. Data collected included the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale to assess the HLBES' criterion validity.

RESULTS

Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation yielded 2 subscales that explained 45.23% of the total variance. The scale revealed an overall internal consistency of 0.78 and a good criterion validity with the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale (r = 0.65, P < .01).

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that the HLBES is an instrument for reporting healthy lifestyle behaviors in Portuguese pregnant women; however, further studies are recommended. This scale can be used to not only describe healthy lifestyle behaviors in pregnant women but also to determine the effects of health promoting interventions.

The impact of social media addiction on healthy lifestyle beliefs in adolescents

OBJECTIVE

This study was designed to examine the impact of social media addiction on healthy lifestyle beliefs in adolescents.

METHOD

The study is a descriptive correlational study. The study was conducted with 722 students at middle and high school levels in a city in the eastern part of Turkey. Data were collected using the Socio-Demographic Information Form, Short Form of Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents, Adolescent Healthy Lifestyle Belief Scale. The data were reported using numbers, percentages, means, standard values, linear and hierarchical regression.

RESULTS

The mean age of adolescents was 14.44 ± 2.62 and their body mass index was 20.16 ± 3.72. Adolescents scored 14.43 ± 2.63 on the social media addiction scale and 55.23 ± 16.80 on the healthy lifestyle belief scale. Social media addiction explains 8.9% of the total variance in healthy lifestyle beliefs. An increase in social media addiction was found to have a statistically significant effect on healthy lifestyle beliefs. The model established for the impact of age, weight, height, and BMI added to social media addiction on healthy lifestyle beliefs was significant, and the explanatory power of the model was 11.6%.

CONCLUSION

It was concluded that social media addiction has an impact on healthy lifestyle beliefs in adolescents and that creating awareness, maintaining balance, promoting alternative activities, and fostering family-school cooperation are important in this regard.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

In order to increase healthy lifestyle beliefs in adolescents, it is necessary to reduce social media addiction levels. Nursing interventions to be implemented for this purpose are important in improving and protecting adolescent health.

A cognitive-behavioral skills building program improves mental health and enhances healthy lifestyle behaviors in nurses and other hospital employees

BACKGROUND

Mental health outcomes in nurses have historically indicated a greater prevalence of anxiety, depression, and suicide than the general population. It is vital to provide programming for healthcare workers to gain the necessary skills to reduce burnout and improve their mental and physical health.

AIMS

The aims of this study were to evaluate mental health outcomes and healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors among nurses and other hospital employees who completed MINDBODYSTRONG, a cognitive-behavioral skill building program.

METHODS

A pre-experimental, pre- and poststudy design was used to examine mental health and well-being outcomes among 100 hospital personnel who participated in MINDBODYSTRONG, a program designed to improve coping and resiliency and decrease stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Outcomes measured included healthy lifestyle behaviors, healthy lifestyle beliefs, anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout.

RESULTS

One hundred hospital personnel, including 93 nurses, completed the pre- and post-survey. Among all participants, post- MINDBODYSTRONG scores for healthy lifestyle beliefs (p = .00; Cohen's d = 0.52) and healthy lifestyle behaviors (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.74) increased significantly with medium effects, while depression (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.51), anxiety (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.54), stress (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.33), and burnout (p = .00; Cohen's d = -0.37) decreased significantly with small and medium effects. The program produced even stronger positive effects on mental health outcomes for participants who started the study with higher levels of depression and anxiety.

LINKING EVIDENCE TO PRACTICE

Anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout decreased significantly postintervention. Participants also significantly improved their healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors with the MINDBODYSTRONG program. MINDBODYSTRONG is an effective program that reduces anxiety, depression, burnout, and stress and improves healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors in hospital-based clinicians. It is of utmost importance to provide evidence-based programs to improve mental resiliency and decrease stress, anxiety, burnout, and depressive symptoms, which will ultimately improve the safety and quality of health care.

Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale: Psychometric properties in Portuguese pregnant women

Healthy lifestyle during pregnancy influences the pregnant woman's and child's physical and mental health, impacting perinatal outcomes. Healthy lifestyle beliefs are predictors of lifestyle behaviors, requiring a valid and reliable instrument to assess them during prenatal care. The 16-item Healthy Lifestyle Belief Scale (HLBS) measures a person's beliefs about their ability to live a healthy lifestyle. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a Portuguese version of the HLBS among pregnant women. A methodological study was developed in two phases: cross-cultural adaptation and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version in a nonprobability sample of 192 Portuguese pregnant women. The exploratory factor analysis suggested three subscales, which explained 53.8% of the total variance. Cronbach's α was 0.83 for the overall scale and for the subscales ranged between 0.71 and 0.81. The HLBS is a reliable and valid instrument to assist health professionals in assessing the ability of Portuguese pregnant women to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Assessing healthy lifestyle beliefs potentially contributes to the development of health behavior interventions in pregnant women and consequently improves perinatal outcomes through evidence-based practices.

Predicting the effect of healthy lifestyle belief on attitude toward nutrition, exercise, physical activity, and weight-related self-efficacy in Turkish adolescents

OBJECTIVES

This study was conducted to examine the effect of healthy lifestyle beliefs on their attitudes toward physical activity, nutrition, exercise, and weight-related self-efficacy lifestyles in Turkish adolescents.

METHODS

This study used a methodological and descriptive design. The study was conducted with 445 adolescents aged 13-18 years. The data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form, the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale for Adolescents, the Nutrition Exercise Attitudes Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Physical Activity Scale. Mean and percentage values, t-test, ANOVA test, and linear regression analysis were used in the analysis of the research data.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference was found between adolescents' obesity status, paternal educational level, maternal educational level, income status, and the mean scores obtained for healthy lifestyle beliefs, nutrition and exercise attitudes, physical activity attitudes, and weight-related self-efficacy, as well as between sex and mean scores for attitudes toward nutrition, exercise, and physical activity. In the model created with regression analysis, it was found that the adolescents' healthy lifestyle beliefs and sociodemographic variables explained 96.3% of their attitudes toward nutrition and exercise, 93.6% of physical activity attitudes, and 96.5% of weight-related self-efficacy levels, with statistical significance.

CONCLUSION

According to the results of the study, healthy lifestyle beliefs are an important predictor of adolescents' attitudes toward nutrition, exercise, and physical activity as well as their weight-related self-efficacy. We recommend that school nurses consider healthy lifestyle beliefs when creating intervention programs for adolescents .
