Digital health intervention on patient safety for children and parents: A scoping review

AIM

To explore digital health interventions on patient safety for children and their parents.

DESIGN

A scoping review.

METHODS

The PCC 'Participants, Concepts, and Contexts' guided the selection of studies that focused on children under 19 years of age or their parents, patient safety interventions for children, and digital health technology for patient safety interventions. This study was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework's five steps. We reported the review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane were searched for articles published up to November 2022.

RESULTS

A total of 13 articles were included and categorized according to the following criteria to describe the results: intervention characteristics, type of digital technology, and outcome characteristics. Regarding intervention characteristics, we identified two categories, prevention and risk management. Additionally, we identified four types of digital technology, mobile applications, web-based technologies, computer kiosks and electronic health records. Finally, in studies focussing on child safety, parental safety behaviours were used to assess injury risk or detect changes related to prevention.

CONCLUSION

Patient safety interventions provided through appropriate digital technologies should be developed to enhance continuum of care for children from hospitalization to home after discharge.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE

Digital health interventions can bolster the role of healthcare providers in patient safety in and out of hospitals, thus improving children's safety and quality of care.

Although the various advantages of digital health technology have been demonstrated, the potential role of digital technology in patient safety interventions for children has not been explored. What were the main finding? Preventive patient safety interventions and risk management for children have been developed. Where and on whom will the research have an impact? Digital health interventions on patient safety can improve children's safety and quality of care by promoting non-face-to-face engagement of children and parents after discharge and expanding healthcare providers' roles.

Educational technologies for accident prevention due to falls in childhood: a scoping review

OBJECTIVES

to map evidence on educational technology use for accident prevention due to falls in childhood.

METHODS

a scoping review, carried out in October and November 2022, in the MEDLINE, Web of Science, BDENF and CINAHL databases and LILACS bibliographic index. There was no delimitation of language or time. Data were extracted and analyzed descriptively by two independent researchers. The research protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework.

RESULTS

twenty-six studies were selected. Booklets, pamphlets and leaflets were the most used technologies, presenting health services as the most frequent environment to develop research on fall prevention. The technologies developed were important outcomes: increased knowledge of children, family members, caregivers, health and education professionals.

CONCLUSIONS

educational technology use makes it possible to increase knowledge, adopt safe practices and reduce falls.

Comparing the Effects of Mobile-Based Education and Booklet-Based Education on Iranian Mothers' Perception on Antibiotics: A Quasi-Experimental Study

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mobile-based education in comparison with booklet-based education on mothers' perception on antibiotics.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was performed on 160 mothers of children aged 1 to 6 years (80 in the experimental group and 80 in the control group) who referred to the urban community health centers in Iran. Both groups were taught about the proper use of antibiotics. The experimental group was taught using a mobile application and the control group was taught using a booklet. The Parental Perception on Antibiotics (PAPA) scale was used to collect data at the beginning and two to four weeks after the educational intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 19.

RESULTS

The results showed that 91.9% of mothers used the knowledge of nurses or other health care providers and 86.3% used their previous experience as the source of information about antibiotics. Also, mothers' perceptions about antibiotics in the subscales of knowledge and beliefs, behaviors, adherence and awareness about antibiotics resistance in the experimental group improved significantly compared to the control group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Mobile-based education was more effective in improving mothers' perception on antibiotics than booklet-based education.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Health care providers can use mobile-based educational method for different groups of society to promote health in various fields.

Effectiveness of mHealth-Safe Kids Hospital for the prevention of hospitalized children safety incidents: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Preschool-age children in hospitals are at a high risk of unexpected incidents. Safety incidents in hospitals can cause serious damage to the children.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the effectiveness of the mobile-type mHealth Safe Kids Hospital (SKH) application (app) for the prevention of hospitalized child safety incidents.

DESIGN

This study used a three-group, randomized controlled trial pre-post design.

SETTING(S)

This study was conducted in the pediatric ward of three general hospitals in Korea.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 124 eligible hospitalized children and their caregivers were enrolled in the study from June to December 2018. Of these, 116 finally participated in the study, and 8 were excluded because they were discharged before the intervention.

METHODS

Hospitalized preschool-age children and their caregivers were randomly allocated into three groups: experimental group I (n = 39), experimental group II (n = 39), and the control group (n = 38). Experimental group I received the SKH app intervention, the experimental group II received a paper-based intervention, whereas the control group received the usual intervention. Participants' outcomes of awareness, knowledge, and behavior related to hospital safety, were assessed at two time points: baseline and 24 h after the intervention.

RESULTS

Hospital safety awareness had a higher increase after intervention in experimental groups I and II than in the control group. Among the four subdomains of hospital safety awareness, there was a significant increase in the scores of experimental group I on three subdomains after the intervention: falls (F = 8.19, p < 0.001), burns (F = 6.73, p = 0.002), and medical devices (F = 6.81, p = 0.002). In hospital safety knowledge and safety behavior, experimental group I had the highest average score after the intervention compared with experimental group II and the control group; however, there was no statistically significant difference in the average score of the three groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Using the SKH app is easy to attract the interest of preschool-age children and is also easy for nurses to use in clinical trials; thus, it is considered to be a useful educational intervention to prevent safety incidents in clinical fields in future.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

It is thought to contribute to the prevention of preschool-age children's safety incidents in pediatric wards.

YouTube's growth in use among children 0-5 during COVID19: The Occidental European case

YouTube has become an educational and entertainment tool among Western European families, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study monitored the main channels for children aged 0-5 years by using the social media analysis (SNA) methodology from March 24, 2020 to August 24, 2020. The software used has been FanpageKarma, which allows the collection and interpretation of data. The results indicate not only a growth in the use of such channels during confinement, but also how their expansion is related to the evolution of the COVID-19, reflecting, in turn, the consequences of the government policies adopted. Social distancing generated a greater consumption of recreational content, but not a greater growth in educational content regardless of the country or culture.

An Educational Intervention to Improve Staff Collaboration and Enhance Knowledge of Fall Risk Factors and Prevention Guidelines

BACKGROUND

Magnet®-designated hospitals are seeking to reduce the frequency of falls that lead to injury, which is considered a hospital-acquired condition. Patients with cancer are at high risk to fall, due to multiple factors. Synthesis of the literature supports team efforts and shared learning sessions for patient-care staff as part of the fall prevention process. The purpose was to improve collaboration between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Senior Nurse Aides (SNAs), as well as to enhance their knowledge of fall risk factors and evidence-based prevention guidelines for pediatric oncology patients.

METHODS

An evidence-based practice project was implemented using a quality improvement pilot based on the Magnet® framework. Oncology RNs and SNAs at a large pediatric hospital were invited to attend one of five educational sessions. Pre-and post-session learning was assessed based on an adapted fall risk knowledge assessment tool.

FINDINGS

Thirty participants attended an educational session with 27 (25 RNs and 2 SNAs) matched pre- and post-session assessments. Median post-session assessment scores were statistically significantly higher than pre-session scores (Z =  -3.11, p = 0.001). Overall knowledge scores increased for 63% of participants.

DISCUSSION

An educational intervention focused on pediatric oncology nursing enhanced knowledge of patient-care roles and fall prevention efforts, leading to improved fall outcomes.

APPLICATION TO PRACTICE

Ensuring that RNs and SNAs fully embrace their shared role in harm prevention is vital when considering the complexity of delivering nursing care in our current healthcare environment.
