Abstract
Vitamin E is classified into tocopherol (Toc) and tocotrienol (T3) based on its side chains. T3 generally has higher cellular uptake than Toc, though the responsible mechanism remains unclear. To elucidate this mechanism, we hypothesized and investigated whether serum albumin is a factor that induces such a difference in the cellular uptake of Toc and T3. Adding bovine serum albumin (BSA) to serum-depleted media increased the cellular uptake of T3 and decreased that of Toc, with varying degrees among α-, β-, γ-, and δ-analogs. Such enhanced uptake of α-T3 was not observed when cells were incubated under low temperature (the uptake of α-Toc was also reduced), suggesting that Toc and T3 bind to albumin to form a complex that results in differential cellular uptake of vitamin E. Fluorescence quenching study confirmed that vitamin E certainly bound to BSA, and that T3 showed a higher affinity than Toc. Molecular docking further indicated that the differential binding energy of Toc or T3 to BSA is due to the Van der Waals interactions via their side chain. Overall, these results suggested that the affinity of Toc and T3 to albumin differs due to their side chains, causing the difference in their albumin-mediated cellular uptake. Our results give a better mechanistic insight into the physiological action of vitamin E.

Abstract
The delivery of curcumin (CUR) using the solid dispersion system (CUR solid dispersions; C-SDs) has been shown to improve CUR bioavailability. However, it is unclear how different particle sizes of C-SDs affect the bioavailability and biological activities of CUR. Hence, we prepared C-SDs in different sizes using food-grade excipients and evaluated their bioavailability and biological activities. By pulverizing large particle sizes of C-SDs using zirconia beads, we successfully prepared C-SDs I-IV (particle size: (I) 120, (II) 447, (III) 987, (IV) 1910 nm). When administrated orally in rats, the bioavailability of CUR was increased with decreasing C-SDs size, most likely by improving its solubility in micelles. When administrated intravenously in rats, blood concentrations of CUR were increased with increasing particle size, suggesting that larger C-SDs presumably control the metabolic conversion of CUR. In RAW264 cells, more CUR was taken up by cells as their sizes reduced, and the more potent their anti-inflammatory activities were, suggesting that smaller C-SDs were taken up through a number of cellular uptake pathways. Altogether, the present study showed an evident effect of C-SDs size on their bioavailability and anti-inflammatory activities—information that serves as a basis for improving the functionality of CUR.

Abstract
Curcumin, a curcuminoid present in the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa has multiple pharmacological effects including anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. This work evaluates the anthelmintic effect of the curcumin molecule (98% pure) on Taenia crassiceps cysticerci viability in vitro. Cysticerci incubated in the presence of increasing concentrations of curcumin showed a dose-dependent mortality correlated with a significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species and a partial inhibition of thioredoxin-glutathione reductase, the only disulfide reductase present in these parasites. At 500 μM curcumin, a 100% of cysticerci lethality was obtained after 2 h of treatment. These results suggest the curcumin-induced oxidative stress could be in the origin of the anthelminthic effect of curcumin. Mice with cysticerci were injected intraperitoneally with 20, 40, or 60 mM curcumin daily for 30 days. A decrease in the burden of cysticerci (46%) was observed with a 60 mM dose of curcumin, supporting this compound as a potential anthelmintic drug.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects the elderly and is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration caused by different pathologies. The most significant challenges in treating AD include the inability of medications to reach the brain because of its poor solubility, low bioavailability, and the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Additionally, current evidence suggests the disruption of BBB plays an important role in the pathogenesis of AD. One of the critical challenges in treating AD is the ineffective treatments and their severe adverse effects. Nanotechnology offers an alternative approach to facilitate the treatment of AD by overcoming the challenges in drug transport across the BBB. Various nanoparticles (NP) loaded with natural products were reported to aid in drug delivery for the treatment of AD. The nano-sized entities of NP are great platforms for incorporating active materials from natural products into formulations that can be delivered effectively to the intended action site without compromising the material's bioactivity. The review highlights the applications of medicinal plants, their derived components, and various nanomedicinebased approaches for the treatment of AD. The combination of medicinal plants and nanotechnology may lead to new theragnostic solutions for the treatment of AD in the future.

Abstract
Based on the free drug hypothesis, we hypothesized that food compounds that bind stronger to BSA than CUR inhibit the binding between BSA and CUR, and that this results in an increase of the cellular uptake and physiological activities of CUR. To verify this hypothesis, food compounds that bind stronger to BSA than CUR were identified. When THP-1 monocytes were co-treated with the identified compounds (e.g., piperine) and CUR, cell viability significantly decreased, suggesting that the physiological activity of CUR was enhanced. Also, when THP-1 macrophages were co-treated with CUR and the identified compounds following LPS + IFNγ treatment, the decrement of TNF-α was higher compared to treatment with CUR only. Furthermore, the cellular uptake of CUR was increased during this co-treatment. Such results verify our hypothesis, and provide insights into the development of ways to enhance the physiological activities of various food compounds via focusing on their interaction with albumin.

Abstract
Surfactants, whose existence has been recognized as early as 2800 BC, have had a long history with the development of human civilization. With the rapid development of nanotechnology in the latter half of the 20th century, breakthroughs in nanomedicine and food nanotechnology using nanoparticles have been remarkable, and new applications have been developed. The technology of surfactant-coated nanoparticles, which provides new functions to nanoparticles for use in the fields of nanomedicine and food nanotechnology, is attracting a lot of attention in the fields of basic research and industry. This review systematically describes these "surfactant-coated nanoparticles" through various sections in order: 1) surfactants, 2) surfactant-coated nanoparticles, application of surfactant-coated nanoparticles to 3) nanomedicine, and 4) food nanotechnology. Furthermore, current progress and problems of the technology using surfactant-coated nanoparticles through recent research reports have been discussed.

Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection has posed a serious threat to public health, therefore, the development of new antibacterial drugs is imperative. Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) is a curcumin analog that exists in nature and possesses extensive pharmacological actions. This review focuses on investigating the antibacterial activity of BDMC alone or in combination with three antibiotics against MRSA. We determined the minimal inhibitory concentration of BDMC, with a broth microdilution assay, and the value against all six strains was 7.8 μg/mL. The synergistic effect of BDMC combined with the antibiotics was determined using a checkerboard dilution test and a time–kill curve assay. The results showed that the antimicrobial effect of BDMC combined with antibiotics was superior to treatment with that of a single agent alone. We examined the antibacterial activity of BDMC in the presence of a membrane-permeabilizing agent and an ATPase-inhibiting agent, respectively. In addition, we analyzed the mecA transcription gene and the penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) level of MRSA treated with BDMC by quantitative RT-PCR or Western blot assay. The gene transcription and the protein level were significantly inhibited. This study demonstrated that BDMC has potent antibacterial activity, and proved that BDMC may be a potential natural modulator of antibiotics.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A mixture of curcuminoids: curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) are named natural curcumin. It is a lipophilic photosensitizer (PS) highly soluble in an organic solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Curcumin is a PS used for microbial inactivation using photodynamic action. However, this solvent has high cytotoxicity and is unavailable in formulations for clinical use. This study aimed to investigate the interactions of curcuminoids syrup with Streptococcus sp., a gram-positive coccus and one of the major pharyngeal pathogens, responsible for diseases such as pharyngitis. METHODS Bacteria were incubated with curcuminoids (natural curcumin, synthetic, DMC, BDMC) at 37 °C in formulations: 1) syrup (water + sucrose) 2) solution alcohol + DMSO. Was centrifuged, and the supernatant collected for absorbance analysis. The results obtained correlating the absorbance with the supernatant to the absorbance of the default concentration. A study of microbial metabolism by growth curve was carried out to justify the result. RESULTS The incorporation of curcumin in syrup is superior to alcohol/DMSO solution by microorganisms. Curcumin incorporation by S. mutans, S. pyogenes, isolated bacteria was 24, 26, 27 % in syrup and 10, 13, 5 % in alcohol/DMSO, respectively. Also, the presence of carbohydrate in a solution can activate the bacterial metabolism, getting better uptake results and photodynamic inactivation to natural curcumin and DMC. Such finds care optimizes the use of curcumin without complications generated by the solvent.
