Chimera states in neuronal networks: A review

A soluble model for synchronized rhythmic activity in ant colonies

Synchronization is one of the most striking instances of collective behavior, occurring in many natural phenomena. For example, in some ant species, ants are inactive within the nest most of the time, but their bursts of activity are highly synchronized and involve the entire nest population. Here we revisit a simulation model that generates this synchronized rhythmic activity through autocatalytic behavior, i.e., active ants can activate inactive ants, followed by a period of rest. We derive a set of delay differential equations that provide an accurate description of the simulations for large ant colonies. Analysis of the fixed-point solutions, complemented by numerical integration of the equations, indicates the existence of stable limit-cycle solutions when the rest period is greater than a threshold and the event of spontaneous activation of inactive ants is very unlikely, so that most of the arousal of ants is done by active ants. Furthermore, we argue that the persistent oscillations observed in the simulations for colonies of finite size are due to resonant amplification of demographic noise.

Emergence of chimeralike oscillation modes in excitable complex networks with preferentially cutting-rewiring operation

In this paper, the preferentially cutting-rewiring operation (PCRO) consisting of the cutting procedure and the rewiring procedure is proposed and is applied on an excitable Erdös-Rényi random network (EERRN), by which the structure of the initially homogeneous network changes dramatically, and lots of common leaves (CLs) are formed between the two hubs. Subsequently, besides the single-mode oscillations that can be usually observed in homogeneous excitable systems, a new kind of multi-mode oscillations composed of synchronous and asynchronous parts can self-organize to emerge, which are similar to the coherent and incoherent clusters in traditional chimera states and are consequently named as the chimeralike oscillation modes (CLOMs). Importantly, by utilizing the dominant phase-advanced driving method, both the mechanisms for the formation and the emergence of CLOMs in EERRNs with PCRO are well explained, among which the CL is exposed to play a key role in forming the CLOMs. Furthermore, the PCRO-induced CLOM phenomena can also be observed in other paradigmatic network models or with other paradigmatic excitable dynamics, which definitely confirms that the PCRO is an universal method in inducing the CLOMs in excitable complex networks. Our contributions may shed lights on a new perspective of the emergence of CLOMs in complex systems and would have great impacts in related fields.

Amplitude responses of swarmalators

Swarmalators are entities that swarm through space and sync in time and are potentially considered to replicate the complex dynamics of many real-world systems. So far, the internal dynamics of swarmalators have been taken as a phase oscillator inspired by the Kuramoto model. Here we examine the internal dynamics utilizing an amplitude oscillator capable of exhibiting periodic and chaotic behaviors. To incorporate the dual interplay between spatial and internal dynamics, we propose a general model that keeps the properties of swarmalators intact. This adaptation calls for a detailed study, which we present in this paper. We establish our study with the Rössler oscillator by taking parameters from both chaotic and periodic regions. While the periodic oscillator mimics most of the patterns in the previous phase oscillator model, the chaotic oscillator brings some fascinating states.

Weak coupling of neurons enables very high-frequency and ultra-fast oscillations through the interplay of synchronized phase shifts

Recently, in the past decade, high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), very high-frequency oscillations (VHFOs), and ultra-fast oscillations (UFOs) were reported in epileptic patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, to this day, the physiological origin of these events has yet to be understood. Our study establishes a mathematical framework based on bifurcation theory for investigating the occurrence of VHFOs and UFOs in depth EEG signals of patients with focal epilepsy, focusing on the potential role of reduced connection strength between neurons in an epileptic focus. We demonstrate that synchronization of a weakly coupled network can generate very and ultra high-frequency signals detectable by nearby microelectrodes. In particular, we show that a bistability region enables the persistence of phase-shift synchronized clusters of neurons. This phenomenon is observed for different hippocampal neuron models, including Morris-Lecar, Destexhe-Paré, and an interneuron model. The mechanism seems to be robust for small coupling, and it also persists with random noise affecting the external current. Our findings suggest that weakened neuronal connections could contribute to the production of oscillations with frequencies above 1000 Hz, which could advance our understanding of epilepsy pathology and potentially improve treatment strategies. However, further exploration of various coupling types and complex network models is needed.

Complete synchronization of three-layer Rulkov neuron network coupled by electrical and chemical synapses

This paper analyzes the complete synchronization of a three-layer Rulkov neuron network model connected by electrical synapses in the same layers and chemical synapses between adjacent layers. The outer coupling matrix of the network is not Laplacian as in linear coupling networks. We develop the master stability function method, in which the invariant manifold of the master stability equations (MSEs) does not correspond to the zero eigenvalues of the connection matrix. After giving the existence conditions of the synchronization manifold about the nonlinear chemical coupling, we investigate the dynamics of the synchronization manifold, which will be identical to that of a synchronous network by fixing the same parameters and initial values. The waveforms show that the transient chaotic windows and the transient approximate periodic windows with increased or decreased periods occur alternatively before asymptotic behaviors. Furthermore, the Lyapunov exponents of the MSEs indicate that the network with a periodic synchronization manifold can achieve complete synchronization, while the network with a chaotic synchronization manifold can not. Finally, we simulate the effects of small perturbations on the asymptotic regimes and the evolution routes for the synchronous periodic and the non-synchronous chaotic network.

Cluster formation due to repulsive spanning trees in attractively coupled networks

Ensembles of coupled nonlinear oscillators are a popular paradigm and an ideal benchmark for analyzing complex collective behaviors. The onset of cluster synchronization is found to be at the core of various technological and biological processes. The current literature has investigated cluster synchronization by focusing mostly on the case of attractive coupling among the oscillators. However, the case of two coexisting competing interactions is of practical interest due to their relevance in diverse natural settings, including neuronal networks consisting of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, the coevolving social model with voters of opposite opinions, and ecological plant communities with both facilitation and competition, to name a few. In the present article, we investigate the impact of repulsive spanning trees on cluster formation within a connected network of attractively coupled limit-cycle oscillators. We successfully predict which nodes belong to each cluster and the emergent frustration of the connected networks independent of the particular local dynamics at the network nodes. We also determine local asymptotic stability of the cluster states using an approach based on the formulation of a master stability function. We additionally validate the emergence of solitary states and antisynchronization for some specific choices of spanning trees and networks.

Phase chimera states on nonlocal hyperrings

Chimera states are dynamical states where regions of synchronous trajectories coexist with incoherent ones. A significant amount of research has been devoted to studying chimera states in systems of identical oscillators, nonlocally coupled through pairwise interactions. Nevertheless, there is increasing evidence, also supported by available data, that complex systems are composed of multiple units experiencing many-body interactions that can be modeled by using higher-order structures beyond the paradigm of classic pairwise networks. In this work we investigate whether phase chimera states appear in this framework, by focusing on a topology solely involving many-body, nonlocal, and nonregular interactions, hereby named nonlocal d-hyperring, (d+1) being the order of the interactions. We present the theory by using the paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators as node dynamics, and we show that phase chimera states emerge in a variety of structures and with different coupling functions. For comparison, we show that, when higher-order interactions are "flattened" to pairwise ones, the chimera behavior is weaker and more elusive.

Effect of higher-order interactions on chimera states in two populations of Kuramoto oscillators

We investigate the effect of the fraction of pairwise and higher-order interactions on the emergent dynamics of the two populations of globally coupled Kuramoto oscillators with phase-lag parameters. We find that the stable chimera exists between saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, while the breathing chimera lives between Hopf and homoclinic bifurcations in the two-parameter phase diagrams. The higher-order interaction facilitates the onset of the bifurcation transitions at a much lower disparity between the inter- and intra-population coupling strengths. Furthermore, the higher-order interaction facilitates the spread of breathing chimera in a large region of the parameter space while suppressing the spread of the stable chimera. A low degree of heterogeneity among the phase-lag parameters promotes the spread of both stable chimera and breathing chimera to a large region of the parameter space for a large fraction of the higher-order coupling. In contrast, a large degree of heterogeneity is found to decrease the spread of both chimera states for a large fraction of the higher-order coupling. A global synchronized state is observed above a critical value of heterogeneity among the phase-lag parameters. We have deduced the low-dimensional evolution equations for the macroscopic order parameters using the Ott-Antonsen Ansatz. We have also deduced the analytical saddle-node and Hopf bifurcation curves from the evolution equations for the macroscopic order parameters and found them to match with the bifurcation curves obtained using the software XPPAUT and with the simulation results.

Complex adaptive learning cortical neural network systems for solving time-fractional difference equations with bursting and mixed-mode oscillation behaviours

Complex networks have been programmed to mimic the input and output functions in multiple biophysical algorithms of cortical neurons at spiking resolution. Prior research has demonstrated that the ineffectual features of membranes can be taken into account by discrete fractional commensurate, non-commensurate and variable-order patterns, which may generate multiple kinds of memory-dependent behaviour. Firing structures involving regular resonator chattering, fast, chaotic spiking and chaotic bursts play important roles in cortical nerve cell insights and execution. Yet, it is unclear how extensively the behaviour of discrete fractional-order excited mechanisms can modify firing cell attributes. It is illustrated that the discrete fractional behaviour of the Izhikevich neuron framework can generate an assortment of resonances for cortical activity via the aforesaid scheme. We analyze the bifurcation using fragmenting periodic solutions to demonstrate the evolution of periods in the framework's behaviour. We investigate various bursting trends both conceptually and computationally with the fractional difference equation. Additionally, the consequences of an excitable and inhibited Izhikevich neuron network (INN) utilizing a regulated factor set exhibit distinctive dynamic actions depending on fractional exponents regulating over extended exchanges. Ultimately, dynamic controllers for stabilizing and synchronizing the suggested framework are shown. This special spiking activity and other properties of the fractional-order model are caused by the memory trace that emerges from the fractional-order dynamics and integrates all the past activities of the neuron. Our results suggest that the complex dynamics of spiking and bursting can be the result of the long-term dependence and interaction of intracellular and extracellular ionic currents.

Fractal basins as a mechanism for the nimble brain

An interesting feature of the brain is its ability to respond to disparate sensory signals from the environment in unique ways depending on the environmental context or current brain state. In dynamical systems, this is an example of multi-stability, the ability to switch between multiple stable states corresponding to specific patterns of brain activity/connectivity. In this article, we describe chimera states, which are patterns consisting of mixed synchrony and incoherence, in a brain-inspired dynamical systems model composed of a network with weak individual interactions and chaotic/periodic local dynamics. We illustrate the mechanism using synthetic time series interacting on a realistic anatomical brain network derived from human diffusion tensor imaging. We introduce the so-called vector pattern state (VPS) as an efficient way of identifying chimera states and mapping basin structures. Clustering similar VPSs for different initial conditions, we show that coexisting attractors of such states reveal intricately "mingled" fractal basin boundaries that are immediately reachable. This could explain the nimble brain's ability to rapidly switch patterns between coexisting attractors.

Breathing cluster in complex neuron-astrocyte networks

Brain activities are featured by spatially distributed neural clusters of coherent firings and a spontaneous slow switching of the clusters between the coherent and incoherent states. Evidences from recent in vivo experiments suggest that astrocytes, a type of glial cell regarded previously as providing only structural and metabolic supports to neurons, participate actively in brain functions by regulating the neural firing activities, yet the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, introducing astrocyte as a reservoir of the glutamate released from the neuron synapses, we propose the model of the complex neuron-astrocyte network, and investigate the roles of astrocytes in regulating the cluster synchronization behaviors of networked chaotic neurons. It is found that a specific set of neurons on the network are synchronized and form a cluster, while the remaining neurons are kept as desynchronized. Moreover, during the course of network evolution, the cluster is switching between the synchrony and asynchrony states in an intermittent fashion, henceforth the phenomenon of "breathing cluster." By the method of symmetry-based analysis, we conduct a theoretical investigation on the synchronizability of the cluster. It is revealed that the contents of the cluster are determined by the network symmetry, while the breathing of the cluster is attributed to the interplay between the neural network and the astrocyte. The phenomenon of breathing cluster is demonstrated in different network models, including networks with different sizes, nodal dynamics, and coupling functions. The findings shed light on the cellular mechanism of astrocytes in regulating neural activities and give insights into the state-switching of the neocortex.

Time-delay-induced spiral chimeras on a spherical surface of globally coupled oscillators

We consider globally coupled networks of identical oscillators, located on the surface of a sphere with interaction time delays, and show that the distance-dependent time delays play a key role for the spiral chimeras to occur as a generic state in different systems of coupled oscillators. For the phase oscillator system, we analyze the existence and stability of stationary solutions along the Ott-Antonsen invariant manifold to find the bifurcation structure of the spiral chimera state. We demonstrate via an extensive numerical experiment that the time-delay-induced spiral chimeras are also present for coupled networks of the Stuart-Landau and Van der Pol oscillators in the same parameter regime as that of phase oscillators, with a series of evenly spaced band-type regions. It is found that the spiral chimera state occurs as a consequence of a resonant-type interplay between the intrinsic period of an individual oscillator and the interaction time delay as a topological structure property.

Chimera states in a chain of superdiffusively coupled neurons

Two- and three-component systems of superdiffusion equations describing the dynamics of action potential propagation in a chain of non-locally interacting neurons with Hindmarsh-Rose nonlinear functions have been considered. Non-local couplings based on the fractional Laplace operator describing superdiffusion kinetics are found to support chimeras. In turn, the system with local couplings, based on the classical Laplace operator, shows synchronous behavior. For several parameters responsible for the activation properties of neurons, it is shown that the structure and evolution of chimera states depend significantly on the fractional Laplacian exponent, reflecting non-local properties of the couplings. For two-component systems, an anisotropic transition to full incoherence in the parameter space responsible for non-locality of the first and second variables is established. Introducing a third slow variable induces a gradual transition to incoherence via additional chimera states formation. We also discuss the possible causes of chimera states formation in such a system of non-locally interacting neurons and relate them with the properties of the fractional Laplace operator in a system with global coupling.

Effect of the electromagnetic induction on a modified memristive neural map model

The significance of discrete neural models lies in their mathematical simplicity and computational ease. This research focuses on enhancing a neural map model by incorporating a hyperbolic tangent-based memristor. The study extensively explores the impact of magnetic induction strength on the model's dynamics, analyzing bifurcation diagrams and the presence of multistability. Moreover, the investigation extends to the collective behavior of coupled memristive neural maps with electrical, chemical, and magnetic connections. The synchronization of these coupled memristive maps is examined, revealing that chemical coupling exhibits a broader synchronization area. Additionally, diverse chimera states and cluster synchronized states are identified and discussed.

The influence of synaptic pathways on the synchronization patterns of regularly structured mChialvo map network

Synchronization of interconnecting units is one of the hottest topics many researchers are interested in. In addition, this emerging phenomenon is responsible for many biological processes, and thus, the synchronization of interacting neurons is an important field of study in neuroscience. Employing the memristive Chialvo (mChialvo) neuron map, this paper investigates the effect of electrical, inner-linking, chemical, and hybrid coupling functions on the synchronization state of a neuronal network with regular structure. Master stability function (MSF) analysis is performed to obtain the necessary conditions for synchronizing the built networks. Afterward, the MSF-based results are confirmed by calculating the synchronization error. Besides, the dynamics of the synchronous neurons are discussed based on the bifurcation analysis. Our results suggest that, compared to the electrical and inner-linking functions, chemical synapses facilitate mChialvo neurons' synchronization since the neurons can achieve synchrony with a negligible chemical coupling strength. Further studies reveal that based on the active synapses, coupled mChialvo neurons can reach cluster synchronization, chimera state, sine-like synchronization, phase synchronization, and cluster phase synchronization.

Chimeras in globally coupled oscillators: A review

The surprising phenomenon of chimera in an ensemble of identical oscillators is no more strange behavior of network dynamics and reality. By this time, this symmetry breaking self-organized collective dynamics has been established in many networks, a ring of non-locally coupled oscillators, globally coupled networks, a three-dimensional network, and multi-layer networks. A variety of coupling and dynamical models in addition to the phase oscillators has been used for a successful observation of chimera patterns. Experimental verification has also been done using metronomes, pendula, chemical, and opto-electronic systems. The phenomenon has also been shown to appear in small networks, and hence, it is not size-dependent. We present here a brief review of the origin of chimera patterns restricting our discussions to networks of globally coupled identical oscillators only. The history of chimeras in globally coupled oscillators is older than what has been reported in nonlocally coupled phase oscillators much later. We elaborate the story of the origin of chimeras in globally coupled oscillators in a chronological order, within our limitations, and with brief descriptions of the significant contributions, including our personal experiences. We first introduce chimeras in non-locally coupled and other network configurations, in general, and then discuss about globally coupled networks in more detail.

Chimera resonance in networks of chaotic maps

We explore numerically the impact of additive Gaussian noise on the spatiotemporal dynamics of ring networks of nonlocally coupled chaotic maps. The local dynamics of network nodes is described by the logistic map, the Ricker map, and the Henon map. 2D distributions of the probability of observing chimera states are constructed in terms of the coupling strength and the noise intensity and for several choices of the local dynamics parameters. It is shown that the coupling strength range can be the widest at a certain optimum noise level at which chimera states are observed with a high probability for a large number of different realizations of randomly distributed initial conditions and noise sources. This phenomenon demonstrates a constructive role of noise in analogy with the effects of stochastic and coherence resonance and may be referred to as chimera resonance.

Antiphase synchronization in a population of swarmalators

Swarmalators are oscillatory systems endowed with a spatial component, whose spatial and phase dynamics affect each other. Such systems can demonstrate fascinating collective dynamics resembling many real-world processes. Through this work, we study a population of swarmalators where they are divided into different communities. The strengths of spatial attraction, repulsion, as well as phase interaction differ from one group to another. Also, they vary from intercommunity to intracommunity. We encounter, as a result of variation in the phase coupling strength, different routes to achieve the static synchronization state by choosing several parameter combinations. We observe that when the intercommunity phase coupling strength is sufficiently large, swarmalators settle in the static synchronization state. However, with a significant small phase coupling strength the state of antiphase synchronization as well as chimeralike coexistence of sync and async are realized. Apart from rigorous numerical results, we have been successful to provide semianalytical treatment for the existence and stability of global static sync and the antiphase sync states.

Phase transitions on a multiplex of swarmalators

Dynamics of bidirectionally coupled swarmalators subject to attractive and repulsive couplings is analyzed. The probability of two elements in different layers being connected strongly depends on a defined vision range r_{c} which appears to lead both layers in different patterns while varying its values. Particularly, the interlayer static sync π has been found and its stability is proven. First-order transitions are observed when the repulsive coupling strength σ_{r} is very small for a fixed r_{c} and, moreover, in the absence of the repulsive coupling, they also appear for sufficiently large values of r_{c}. For σ_{r}=0 and for sufficiently small values of r_{c}, both layers achieve a second-order transition in a surprising two steps that are characterized by the drop of the energy of the internal phases while increasing the value of the interlayer attractive coupling σ_{a} and later a smooth jump, up to high energy value where synchronization is achieved. During these transitions, the internal phases present rotating waves with counterclockwise and later clockwise directions until synchronization, as σ_{a} increases. These results are supported by simulations and animations added as supplemental materials.

Synchronization in simplicial complexes of memristive Rulkov neurons

Simplicial complexes are mathematical constructions that describe higher-order interactions within the interconnecting elements of a network. Such higher-order interactions become increasingly significant in neuronal networks since biological backgrounds and previous outcomes back them. In light of this, the current research explores a higher-order network of the memristive Rulkov model. To that end, the master stability functions are used to evaluate the synchronization of a network with pure pairwise hybrid (electrical and chemical) synapses alongside a network with two-node electrical and multi-node chemical connections. The findings provide good insight into the impact of incorporating higher-order interaction in a network. Compared to two-node chemical synapses, higher-order interactions adjust the synchronization patterns to lower multi-node chemical coupling parameter values. Furthermore, the effect of altering higher-order coupling parameter value on the dynamics of neurons in the synchronization state is researched. It is also shown how increasing network size can enhance synchronization by lowering the value of coupling parameters whereby synchronization occurs. Except for complete synchronization, cluster synchronization is detected for higher electrical coupling strength values wherein the neurons are out of the completed synchronization state.

Detecting partial synchrony in a complex oscillatory network using pseudovortices

Partial synchronization is an important dynamical process of coupled oscillators on various natural and artificial networks, which can remain undetected due to the system complexity. With an analogy between pairwise asynchrony of oscillators and topological defects, i.e., vortices, in the two-dimensional XY model, we propose a robust and data-driven method to identify the partial synchronization on complex networks. The proposed method is based on an integer matrix whose element is pseudovorticity that discretely quantifies asynchronous phase dynamics in every two oscillators, which results in graphical and entropic representations of partial synchrony. As a first trial, we apply our method to 200 FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons on a complex small-world network. Partially synchronized chimera states are revealed by discriminating synchronized states even with phase lags. Such phase lags also appear in partial synchronization in chimera states. Our topological, graphical, and entropic method is implemented solely with measurable phase dynamics data, which will lead to a straightforward application to general oscillatory networks including neural networks in the brain.

Three-dimensional memristive Morris-Lecar model with magnetic induction effects and its FPGA implementation

To characterize the magnetic induction flow induced by neuron membrane potential, a three-dimensional (3D) memristive Morris-Lecar (ML) neuron model is proposed in this paper. It is achieved using a memristor induction current to replace the slow modulation current in the existing 3D ML neuron model with fast-slow structure. The magnetic induction effects on firing activities are explained by the spiking/bursting firings with period-adding bifurcation and periodic/chaotic spiking-bursting patterns, and the bifurcation mechanisms of the bursting patterns are elaborated using the fast-slow analysis method to create two bifurcation sets. In particular, the 3D memristive ML model can also exhibit the homogeneous coexisting bursting patterns when switching the memristor initial states, which are effectively illustrated by the theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. Finally, a digitally FPGA-based hardware platform is developed for the 3D memristive ML model and the experimentally measured results well verify the numerical ones.

Self-induced-stochastic-resonance breathing chimeras

The study by Semenova et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 014102 (2016)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.117.014102] discovered a type of chimera state known as coherence-resonance chimera (CRC), which combines the effects of coherence resonance (CR) and the spatial property of classical chimeras. In this Letter, we present yet another form of chimera, which we refer to as self-induced-stochastic-resonance breathing chimera (SISR-BC), which differs fundamentally from the CRC in that it combines the mechanism and effects of self-induced stochastic resonance (SISR, previously shown by DeVille et al. [Phys. Rev. E 72, 031105 (2005)1539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.72.031105] to be intrinsically different from CR), the symmetry breaking in the rotational coupling between the slow and fast subsystems of the coupled oscillators, and the property of breathing chimera-a form of chimera state characterized by nonstationary periodic dynamics of coherent-incoherent patterns with a periodically oscillating global order parameter. Unlike other types of chimeras, including CRC, SISR-BC demonstrates remarkable resilience to a relatively wide range of stochastic perturbations and persists even when the purely excitable system is significantly distant from the Hopf bifurcation threshold-thanks to the mechanism of SISR-and globally attracts random distributions of initial conditions. Considering its potential impact on information processing in neuronal networks, SISR-BC could have special significance and applications.

Chimera states in a large laterally coupled laser array with four different waveguide structures

Chimera states are rich and fascinating phenomena existing in many networks, where the identical oscillators self-organize into spatially separated coexisting domains of coherent and incoherent oscillations. Here, we report these states in the large laterally coupled laser array with four different waveguiding structures, with which a variety of chimera patterns can be revealed. We present the bifurcation diagrams giving birth to them and find that the chimeras exist in the boundary of the steady state and multi-period oscillation solutions, which applies to all the prevalent waveguiding structures considered. We also find that the waveguiding structures play an important role in the chimera states, e.g., the array composed of the index antiguiding with gain-guiding has a wider chimera region compared to other waveguides considered. Additionally, the effects of the crucial parameters including the laser separation ratio, pump rate, frequency detuning, and linewidth enhancement factor on the observed phenomena are discussed. Our analysis shows that the frequency detuning between lasers and the linewidth enhancement factor affects the lifetime and pattern of chimeras. The results could guide the design of laser arrays or introduce more insight into a new understanding of the dynamical behaviors of networks.

Comparison of fluorescence biosensors and whole-cell patch clamp recording in detecting ACh, NE, and 5-HT

The communication between neurons and, in some cases, between neurons and non-neuronal cells, through neurotransmission plays a crucial role in various physiological and pathological processes. Despite its importance, the neuromodulatory transmission in most tissues and organs remains poorly understood due to the limitations of current tools for direct measurement of neuromodulatory transmitters. In order to study the functional roles of neuromodulatory transmitters in animal behaviors and brain disorders, new fluorescent sensors based on bacterial periplasmic binding proteins (PBPs) and G-protein coupled receptors have been developed, but their results have not been compared to or multiplexed with traditional methods such as electrophysiological recordings. In this study, a multiplexed method was developed to measure acetylcholine (ACh), norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin (5-HT) in cultured rat hippocampal slices using simultaneous whole-cell patch clamp recordings and genetically encoded fluorescence sensor imaging. The strengths and weaknesses of each technique were compared, and the results showed that both techniques did not interfere with each other. In general, genetically encoded sensors GRAB_NE and GRAB_5HT1.₀ showed better stability compared to electrophysiological recordings in detecting NE and 5-HT, while electrophysiological recordings had faster temporal kinetics in reporting ACh. Moreover, genetically encoded sensors mainly report the presynaptic neurotransmitter release while electrophysiological recordings provide more information of the activation of downstream receptors. In sum, this study demonstrates the use of combined techniques to measure neurotransmitter dynamics and highlights the potential for future multianalyte monitoring.

Sensitive dynamics of brain cognitive networks and its resource constraints

It is well known that brain functions are closely related to the synchronization of brain networks, but the underlying mechanisms are still not completely understood. To study this problem, we here focus on the synchronization of cognitive networks, in contrast to that of a global brain network, as individual brain functions are in fact performed by different cognitive networks but not the global network. In detail, we consider four different levels of brain networks and two approaches, i.e., either with or without resource constraints. For the case of without resource constraints, we find that global brain networks have fundamentally different behaviors from that of the cognitive networks; i.e., the former has a continuous synchronization transition, while the latter shows a novel transition of oscillatory synchronization. This feature of oscillation comes from the sparse links among the communities of cognitive networks, resulting in coupling sensitive dynamics of brain cognitive networks. While for the case of resource constraints, we find that at the global level, the synchronization transition becomes explosive, in contrast to the continuous synchronization for the case of without resource constraints. At the level of cognitive networks, the transition also becomes explosive and the coupling sensitivity is significantly reduced, thus guaranteeing the robustness and fast switch of brain functions. Moreover, a brief theoretical analysis is provided.

Chimera patterns in conservative Hamiltonian systems and Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms

Experimental realizations of chimera patterns, characterized by coexisting regions of phase coherence and incoherence, have so far been achieved for non-conservative systems with dissipation and exclusively in classical settings. The possibility of observing chimera patterns in quantum systems has rarely been studied and it remains an open question if chimera patterns can exist in closed, or conservative quantum systems. Here, we tackle these challenges by first proposing a conservative Hamiltonian system with nonlocal hopping, where the energy is well-defined and conserved. We show explicitly that such a system can exhibit chimera patterns. Then we propose a physical mechanism for the nonlocal hopping by using an additional mediating channel. This leads us to propose a possible experimentally realizable quantum system based on a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a spin-dependent optical lattice, where an untrapped component serves as the matter-wave mediating field. In this BEC system, nonlocal spatial hopping over tens of lattice sites can be achieved and simulations suggest that chimera patterns should be observable in certain parameter regimes.

In-phase and anti-phase bursting dynamics and synchronisation scenario in neural network by varying coupling phase

We have analysed the synchronisation scenario and the rich spatiotemporal patterns in the network of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons under the influence of self, mixed and cross coupling of state variables which are realised by varying coupling phase. We have introduced a coupling matrix in the model to vary coupling phase. The excitatory and inhibitory couplings in the membrane potential induce in-phase and anti-phase bursting dynamics, respectively, in the two coupled system. When the off-diagonal elements of the matrix are zero, the system shows self coupling of the three variables, which helps to attain synchrony. The off-diagonal elements give cross interactions between the variables, which reduces synchrony. The stability of the synchrony attained is analysed using Lyapunov function approach. In our study, we found that self coupling in three variables is sufficient to induce chimera states in non-local coupling. The strength of incoherence and discontinuity measure validates the existence of chimera and multichimera states. The inhibitor self coupling in local interaction induces interesting patterns like Mixed Oscillatory State and clusters. The results may help in understanding the spatiotemporal communications of the brain, within the limitations of the size of the network analysed in this study.

Study on characteristic of epileptic multi-electroencephalograph base on Hilbert-Huang transform and brain network dynamics

Lots of studies have been carried out on characteristic of epileptic Electroencephalograph (EEG). However, traditional EEG characteristic research methods lack exploration of spatial information. To study the characteristics of epileptic EEG signals from the perspective of the whole brain，this paper proposed combination methods of multi-channel characteristics from time-frequency and spatial domains. This paper was from two aspects: Firstly, signals were converted into 2D Hilbert Spectrum (HS) images which reflected the time-frequency characteristics by Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT). These images were identified by Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model whose sensitivity was 99.8%, accuracy was 98.7%, specificity was 97.4%, F1-score was 98.7%, and AUC-ROC was 99.9%. Secondly, the multi-channel signals were converted into brain networks which reflected the spatial characteristics by Symbolic Transfer Entropy (STE) among different channels EEG. And the results show that there are different network properties between ictal and interictal phase and the signals during the ictal enter the synchronization state more quickly, which was verified by Kuramoto model. To summarize, our results show that there was different characteristics among channels for the ictal and interictal phase, which can provide effective physical non-invasive indicators for the identification and prediction of epileptic seizures.

Chimera patterns with spatial random swings between periodic attractors in a network of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators

For the study of symmetry-breaking phenomena in neuronal networks, simplified versions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model are widely used. In this paper, these phenomena are investigated in a network of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators taken in the form of the original model and it is found that it exhibits diverse partial synchronization patterns that are unobserved in the networks with simplified models. Apart from the classical chimera, we report a new type of chimera pattern whose incoherent clusters are characterized by spatial random swings among a few fixed periodic attractors. Another peculiar hybrid state is found that combines the features of this chimera state and a solitary state such that the main coherent cluster is interspersed with some nodes with identical solitary dynamics. In addition, oscillation death including chimera death emerges in this network. A reduced model of the network is derived to study oscillation death, which helps explaining the transition from spatial chaos to oscillation death via the chimera state with a solitary state. This study deepens our understanding of chimera patterns in neuronal networks.

Sex, ducks, and rock "n" roll: Mathematical model of sexual response

In this paper, we derive and analyze a mathematical model of a sexual response. As a starting point, we discuss two studies that proposed a connection between a sexual response cycle and a cusp catastrophe and explain why that connection is incorrect but suggests an analogy with excitable systems. This then serves as a basis for derivation of a phenomenological mathematical model of a sexual response, in which the variables represent levels of physiological and psychological arousal. Bifurcation analysis is performed to identify stability properties of the model's steady state, and numerical simulations are performed to illustrate different types of behavior that can be observed in the model. Solutions corresponding to the dynamics associated with the Masters-Johnson sexual response cycle are represented by "canard"-like trajectories that follow an unstable slow manifold before making a large excursion in the phase space. We also consider a stochastic version of the model, for which spectrum, variance, and coherence of stochastic oscillations around a deterministically stable steady state are found analytically, and confidence regions are computed. Large deviation theory is used to explore the possibility of stochastic escape from the neighborhood of the deterministically stable steady state, and the methods of an action plot and quasi-potential are employed to compute most probable escape paths. We discuss implications of the results for facilitating better quantitative understanding of the dynamics of a human sexual response and for improving clinical practice.

Investigation of phase synchronization in functional brain networks of children with ADHD using nonlinear recurrence measure

Measuring the phase synchronization between different brain regions in functional brain networks is a common approach to investigate many psychological disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The emotional processing deficit in ADHD children is one of the main obstacles in their social interactions. In this study, the nonlinear Correlation between Probability of Recurrences (CPR) method is used for the first time to construct functional brain networks of 22 boys with ADHD and 22 healthy ones during watching four visual-emotional stimuli types. Topological features of brain networks, including shortest path length, clustering coefficient, and nodes strengths, are investigated in groups of ADHD and healthy. The results indicate a significantly (P-Values < 0.01) greater average clustering coefficient and lower shortest path length in the brain networks of ADHD individuals than the healthy ones. Accordingly, in the ADHD brain networks, the information exchange in both local and global scales is abnormally more than the healthy ones, leading to a hyper-synchronization in this group. The topological alterations of ADHD brain networks are mainly observed in the brain's frontal and occipital lobes, indicating impaired brain function of this group in emotional and visual processing. This survey demonstrates that the CPR method can be a good candidate for distinguishing the phase interactions of ADHD and healthy brain networks. Therefore, this study can contribute to further insights into the nonlinear dynamics analysis of brain networks in ADHD individuals.

From Turing patterns to chimera states in the 2D Brusselator model

The Brusselator has been used as a prototype model for autocatalytic reactions and, in particular, for the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. When coupled at the diffusive limit, the Brusselator undergoes a Turing bifurcation resulting in the formation of classical Turing patterns, such as spots, stripes, and spirals in two spatial dimensions. In the present study, we use generic nonlocally coupled Brusselators and show that in the limit of the coupling range R→1 (diffusive limit), the classical Turing patterns are recovered, while for intermediate coupling ranges and appropriate parameter values, chimera states are produced. This study demonstrates how the parameters of a typical nonlinear oscillator can be tuned so that the coupled system passes from spatially stable Turing structures to dynamical spatiotemporal chimera states.

Asymmetric spiral chimeras on a spheric surface of nonlocally coupled phase oscillators

The spiral chimera state shows a remarkable spatiotemporal pattern in a two-dimensional array of oscillators for which the coherent spiral arms coexist with incoherent cores. In this work, we report on an asymmetric spiral chimera having incoherent cores of different sizes on the spherical surface of identical phase oscillators with nonlocal coupling. This asymmetric spiral chimera exhibits a strongly symmetry-broken state in the sense that not only the coherent and incoherent domains coexist, but also their incoherent cores are nonidentical, although the underlying coupling structure is symmetric. On the basis of analyses along the Ott-Antonsen invariant manifold, the bifurcation conditions of asymmetric spiral chimeras are derived, which reveals that the asymmetric spiral chimera state emerges via a supercritical symmetry-breaking bifurcation from the symmetric spiral chimera. For the coupling function composed of two Legendre modes, rigorous stability analyses are carried out to present a complete stability diagram for different types of spiral chimeras, including the stationary symmetric and asymmetric spiral chimeras as well as breathing asymmetric spiral chimera. For the general coupling scheme the asymmetric spiral chimera occurs as a result of competition between the odd and even Legendre modes of the coupling function. Our theoretical findings are verified by using extensive numerical simulations of the model system.

Dynamics of a two-layer neuronal network with asymmetry in coupling

Investigating the effect of changes in neuronal connectivity on the brain's behavior is of interest in neuroscience studies. Complex network theory is one of the most capable tools to study the effects of these changes on collective brain behavior. By using complex networks, the neural structure, function, and dynamics can be analyzed. In this context, various frameworks can be used to mimic neural networks, among which multi-layer networks are a proper one. Compared to single-layer models, multi-layer networks can provide a more realistic model of the brain due to their high complexity and dimensionality. This paper examines the effect of changes in asymmetry coupling on the behaviors of a multi-layer neuronal network. To this aim, a two-layer network is considered as a minimum model of left and right cerebral hemispheres communicated with the corpus callosum. The chaotic model of Hindmarsh-Rose is taken as the dynamics of the nodes. Only two neurons of each layer connect two layers of the network. In this model, it is assumed that the layers have different coupling strengths, so the effect of each coupling change on network behavior can be analyzed. As a result, the projection of the nodes is plotted for several coupling strengths to investigate how the asymmetry coupling influences the network behaviors. It is observed that although no coexisting attractor is present in the Hindmarsh-Rose model, an asymmetry in couplings causes the emergence of different attractors. The bifurcation diagrams of one node of each layer are presented to show the variation of the dynamics due to coupling changes. For further analysis, the network synchronization is investigated by computing intra-layer and inter-layer errors. Calculating these errors shows that the network can be synchronized only for large enough symmetric coupling.

Effect of mobility on collective phase dynamics of nonlocally coupled oscillators with a phase lag

Nonlocally coupled oscillators with a phase lag self-organize into various patterns, such as global synchronization, the twisted state, and the chimera state. In this paper, we consider nonlocally coupled oscillators that move on a ring by randomly exchanging their positions with the neighbors and investigate the combined effects of phase lag and mobility on the collective phase dynamics. Spanning the whole range of phase lag and mobility, we show that mobility promotes synchronization for an attractive coupling, whereas it destroys coherence for a repulsive coupling. The transition behaviors are discussed in terms of the timescales of synchronization and diffusion of the oscillators. We also find a novel spatiotemporal pattern at the border between coherent and incoherent states.

Diverse coherence-resonance chimeras in coupled type-I excitable systems

Coherence-resonance chimera was discovered in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 014102 (2016)10.1103/PhysRevLett.117.014102], which combines the effect of coherence-resonance and classical chimeras in the presence of noise in a network of type-II excitable systems. However, the same in a network of type-I excitable units has not been observed yet. In this paper we report the occurrence of coherence-resonance chimera in coupled type-I excitable systems. We consider a paradigmatic model of type-I excitability, namely, the saddle-node infinite period model, and show that the coherence-resonance chimera appears over an optimum range of noise intensity. Moreover, we discover a unique chimera pattern that is a mixture of classical chimera and the coherence-resonance chimera. We support our results using quantitative measures and map them in parameter space. This study reveals that the coherence-resonance chimera is a general chimera pattern and thus it deepens our understanding of role of noise in coupled excitable systems.

Phase frustration induced remote synchronization

Remote synchronization (RS) may take an important role in brain functioning and its study has attracted much attention in recent years. So far, most studies of RS are focused on the Stuart-Landau oscillators with mean-field coupling. However, realistic cases may have more complicated couplings and behaviors, such as the brain networks. To make the study of RS a substantial progress toward realistic situations, we here present a model of RS with phase frustration and show that RS can be induced for those systems where no RS exists when there is no phase frustration. By numerical simulations on both the Stuart-Landau and Kuramoto oscillators, we find that the optimal range of RS depends on the match of phase frustrations between the hub and leaf nodes and a fixed relationship of this match is figured out. While for the non-optimal range of RS, we find that RS exists only in a linear band between the phase frustrations of the hub and leaf nodes. A brief theoretical analysis is provided to explain these results.

Taming non-stationary chimera states in locally coupled oscillators

The imperfect traveling chimera (ITC) state is a novel non-stationary chimera pattern in which the incoherent domain of oscillators spreads into the coherent domain. We investigate the ITC state in locally coupled pendulum oscillators with heterogeneous driving forces. We introduce the heterogeneous phase value in the driving forces by two different ways, namely, the random phase from uniform distribution and random phase directions with identical amplitude. We discover two transition mechanisms from ITC to coherent state through traveling chimera-like state by taking the two different phase heterogeneity. The transition phenomena are investigated using cylindrical and polar coordinate phase spaces. In the numerical study, we propose a quantitative measurement named "spatiotemporal consistency" strength for distinguishing the ITC from the traveling one. Our research facilitates the exploration of potential applications of heterogeneous interactions in neuroscience.

Noise-induced collective dynamics in the small-world network of photosensitive neurons

Photosensitive neurons can capture and convert external optical signals, and then realize the encoding signal. It is confirmed that a variety of firing modes could be induced under optical stimuli. As a result, it is interesting to explore the mode transitions of collective dynamics in the photosensitive neuron network under external stimuli. In this work, the collective dynamics of photosensitive neurons in a small-world network with non-synaptic coupling will be discussed with spatial diversity of noise and uniform noise applied on, respectively. The results prove that a variety of different collective electrical activities could be induced under different conditions. Under spatial diversity of noise applied on, a chimera state could be observed in the evolution, and steady cluster synchronization could be detected in the end; even the nodes in each cluster depend on the degree of each node. Under uniform noise applied on, the complete synchronization window could be observed alternately in the transient process, and steady complete synchronization could be detected finally. The potential mechanism is that continuous energy is pumped in the phototubes, and energy exchange and balance between neurons to form the resonance synchronization in the network with different noise applied on. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the evolution of collective dynamical behaviors in the network depends on the external stimuli on each node. Moreover, the bifurcation analysis for the single neuron model is calculated, and the results confirm that the electrical activities of single neuron are sensitive to different kinds of noise.

Stability Analysis for a Fractional-Order Coupled FitzHugh–Nagumo-Type Neuronal Model

The aim of this work is to describe the dynamics of a fractional-order coupled FitzHugh–Nagumo neuronal model. The equilibrium states are analyzed in terms of their stability properties, both dependently and independently of the fractional orders of the Caputo derivatives, based on recently established theoretical results. Numerical simulations are shown to clarify and exemplify the theoretical results.

Dynamical robustness of complex networks subject to long-range connectivity

In spite of a few attempts in understanding the dynamical robustness of complex networks, this extremely important subject of research is still in its dawn as compared to the other dynamical processes on networks. We hereby consider the concept of long-range interactions among the dynamical units of complex networks and demonstrate for the first time that such a characteristic can have noteworthy impacts on the dynamical robustness of networked systems, regardless of the underlying network topology. We present a comprehensive analysis of this phenomenon on top of diverse network architectures. Such dynamical damages being able to substantially affect the network performance, determining mechanisms that boost the robustness of networks becomes a fundamental question. In this work, we put forward a prescription based upon self-feedback that can efficiently resurrect global rhythmicity of complex networks composed of active and inactive dynamical units, and thus can enhance the network robustness. We have been able to delineate the whole proposition analytically while dealing with all d -path adjacency matrices, having an excellent agreement with the numerical results. For the numerical computations, we examine scale-free networks, Watts–Strogatz small-world model and also Erdös–Rényi random network, along with Landau–Stuart oscillators for casting the local dynamics.

Interlayer Connectivity Affects the Coherence Resonance and Population Activity Patterns in Two-Layered Networks of Excitatory and Inhibitory Neurons

The firing patterns of neuronal populations often exhibit emergent collective oscillations, which can display substantial regularity even though the dynamics of individual elements is very stochastic. One of the many phenomena that is often studied in this context is coherence resonance, where additional noise leads to improved regularity of spiking activity in neurons. In this work, we investigate how the coherence resonance phenomenon manifests itself in populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons. In our simulations, we use the coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators in the excitable regime and in the presence of neuronal noise. Formally, our model is based on the concept of a two-layered network, where one layer contains inhibitory neurons, the other excitatory neurons, and the interlayer connections represent heterotypic interactions. The neuronal activity is simulated in realistic coupling schemes in which neurons within each layer are connected with undirected connections, whereas neurons of different types are connected with directed interlayer connections. In this setting, we investigate how different neurophysiological determinants affect the coherence resonance. Specifically, we focus on the proportion of inhibitory neurons, the proportion of excitatory interlayer axons, and the architecture of interlayer connections between inhibitory and excitatory neurons. Our results reveal that the regularity of simulated neural activity can be increased by a stronger damping of the excitatory layer. This can be accomplished with a higher proportion of inhibitory neurons, a higher fraction of inhibitory interlayer axons, a stronger coupling between inhibitory axons, or by a heterogeneous configuration of interlayer connections. Our approach of modeling multilayered neuronal networks in combination with stochastic dynamics offers a novel perspective on how the neural architecture can affect neural information processing and provide possible applications in designing networks of artificial neural circuits to optimize their function via noise-induced phenomena.

Oscillation suppression and chimera states in time-varying networks

Complex network theory has offered a powerful platform for the study of several natural dynamic scenarios, based on the synergy between the interaction topology and the dynamics of its constituents. With research in network theory being developed so fast, it has become extremely necessary to move from simple network topologies to more sophisticated and realistic descriptions of the connectivity patterns. In this context, there is a significant amount of recent works that have emerged with enormous evidence establishing the time-varying nature of the connections among the constituents in a large number of physical, biological, and social systems. The recent review article by Ghosh et al. [Phys. Rep. 949, 1-63 (2022)] demonstrates the significance of the analysis of collective dynamics arising in temporal networks. Specifically, the authors put forward a detailed excerpt of results on the origin and stability of synchronization in time-varying networked systems. However, among the complex collective dynamical behaviors, the study of the phenomenon of oscillation suppression and that of other diverse aspects of synchronization are also considered to be central to our perception of the dynamical processes over networks. Through this review, we discuss the principal findings from the research studies dedicated to the exploration of the two collective states, namely, oscillation suppression and chimera on top of time-varying networks of both static and mobile nodes. We delineate how temporality in interactions can suppress oscillation and induce chimeric patterns in networked dynamical systems, from effective analytical approaches to computational aspects, which is described while addressing these two phenomena. We further sketch promising directions for future research on these emerging collective behaviors in time-varying networks.

Synchronization in a Multiplex Network of Nonidentical Fractional-Order Neurons

Fractional-order neuronal models that include memory effects can describe the rich dynamics of the firing of the neurons. This paper studies synchronization problems in a multiple network of Caputo–Fabrizio type fractional order neurons in which the orders of the derivatives in the layers are different. It is observed that the intralayer synchronization state occurs in weaker intralayer couplings when using nonidentical fractional-order derivatives rather than integer-order or identical fractional orders. Furthermore, the needed interlayer coupling strength for interlayer near synchronization decreases for lower fractional orders. The dynamics of the neurons in nonidentical layers are also considered. It is shown that in lower fractional orders, the neurons’ dynamics change to periodic when the near synchronization state occurs. Moreover, decreasing the derivative order leads to incrementing the frequency of the bursts in the synchronization manifold, which is in contrast to the behavior of the single neuron.

Extended mean-field approach for chimera states in random complex networks

Identical oscillators in the chimera state exhibit a mixture of coherent and incoherent patterns simultaneously. Nonlocal interactions and phase lag are critical factors in forming a chimera state within the Kuramoto model in Euclidean space. Here, we investigate the contributions of nonlocal interactions and phase lag to the formation of the chimera state in random networks. By developing an extended mean-field approximation and using a numerical approach, we find that the emergence of a chimera state in the Erdös-Rényi network is due mainly to degree heterogeneity with nonzero phase lag. For a regularly random network, although all nodes have the same degree, we find that disordered connections may yield the chimera state in the presence of long-range interactions. Furthermore, we show a nontrivial dynamic state in which all the oscillators drift more slowly than a defined frequency due to connectivity disorder at large phase lags beyond the mean-field solutions.

Intralayer and interlayer synchronization in multiplex network with higher-order interactions

Recent developments in complex systems have witnessed that many real-world scenarios, successfully represented as networks, are not always restricted to binary interactions but often include higher-order interactions among the nodes. These beyond pairwise interactions are preferably modeled by hypergraphs, where hyperedges represent higher-order interactions between a set of nodes. In this work, we consider a multiplex network where the intralayer connections are represented by hypergraphs, called the multiplex hypergraph. The hypergraph is constructed by mapping the maximal cliques of a scale-free network to hyperedges of suitable sizes. We investigate the intralayer and interlayer synchronizations of such multiplex structures. Our study unveils that the intralayer synchronization appreciably enhances when a higher-order structure is taken into consideration in spite of only pairwise connections. We derive the necessary condition for stable synchronization states by the master stability function approach, which perfectly agrees with the numerical results. We also explore the robustness of interlayer synchronization and find that for the multiplex structures with many-body interaction, the interlayer synchronization is more persistent than the multiplex networks with solely pairwise interaction.
