Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric pain management is a constantly developing field. Despite extensive research, several studies have concluded that children's pain is still underestimated and undertreated. Nurses working with children have an important professional and ethical responsibility to possess up-to-date knowledge of pediatric pain management. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management in pediatric surgical wards and to investigate the short- and long-term effects of a tailored educational intervention. METHODS This study has a quasi-experimental design without a control group and uses a previously validated questionnaire, the Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain-Norwegian version (PNKAS-N). Nurses in four pediatric surgical wards in one university hospital in Norway answered the survey once before and three times after a tailored educational intervention. RESULTS Eighty-three nurses answered the PNKAS-N at baseline (response rate of 75%). The nurse's total PNKAS-N mean score was 27.8 (77.3%) at baseline. We identified knowledge and attitude deficits regarding items related to opioid doses, the risk of drug addiction, the risk of respiratory depression, and the choice of pain medication for children. The total PNKAS-N mean score was statistically significantly increased after the intervention, at T2 (85.2%), as compared to baseline, and this improvement was sustained at T3 (83.8%) and T4 (81.4%). CONCLUSION The tailored educational intervention had a significant effect on nurses' knowledge and attitudes about pediatric pain management.

Abstract
AIM To identify and compare factors associated with pain perception and management among paediatric nurses and nursing students using virtual human technology. DESIGN This study employed a comparative, cross-sectional design. METHODS Fifty-one paediatric nurses from a tertiary hospital and 50 senior nursing students from a nursing college, both located in South Korea, participated in the study. Virtual vignettes, including scenarios with virtual children and their clinical information, were used to assess participants' pain perception and management. The virtual children, created from real face photos, varied in age (young/old), sex (boy/girl) and facial expressions (smile/grimace). Participants rated perceived pain scores and selected management choices for eight virtual vignettes, which were randomly presented. The Korean version of the Paediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude Survey was completed along with demographic information. RESULTS Both paediatric nurses and nursing students rated pain scores lower than the actual pain scores reported by virtual children. Nurses rated higher pain scores and accordingly selected more medication doses compared to students. Beyond pain-related knowledge, the facial expression of the virtual child influenced pain rating and medication choices, while age and sex had no effect. CONCLUSION Nursing students were more sensitive to the facial expressions of virtual children when rating their pain compared to nurses. Future studies should explore how paediatric nurses' clinical experiences impact their assessment and management of child patient pain. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE Paediatric nurses' knowledge of pain is inadequate, necessitating ongoing education in pain management. Both nurses and nursing students should self-reflect on their pain assessment practices to ensure unbiased care regardless of child patients' characteristics. IMPACT Virtual human technology can be utilised to train nurses and students to identify and address any biases in their assessment of patients' pain perception. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Digital face photos of four healthy children were used as the fundamental material for creating virtual children, with their parents' consent.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In low- and middle- income countries like Rwanda, children are most likely to suffer from painful and life-limiting conditions due to various factors predominant in these settings. Adequate pre-licensure pain management training can improve pain relief nursing practices. Educators and nurses in practice have a responsibility to teach the soon-to- be nurses for holistic competent nursing care of children, emphasizing the importance of and addressing child's suffering, yet inconsistencies were reported in what was taught regarding pediatric pain management from a theoretical perspective by nurse educators as compared to their counterparts in clinical settings in Rwanda. DESIGN This study applied a qualitative approach using group discussions based on nominal group technique (NGT) to develop and validate a conceptual framework supporting the capacity enhancement of nurse educators and preceptors facilitating students' learning about pediatric pain management in Rwanda. METHODS NGT meetings were conducted with academic nurses (n = 8), nurse clinicians (n = 4), and nursing students (n = 2) during a 2-day workshop to identify strategies, discuss the relevance of each strategy and to agree on key concepts of a framework for improving the ability of nurse educators and preceptors to teach PPM to nursing students. After four weeks another round of NGT meetings were done with nursing faculty (n = 6), academic nurse leaders (n = 3), nurse preceptors (n = 2), clinical nurse leaders (n = 2), a nurse leader from a regulatory body (n = 1), and nursing student (n = 1) to validate the developed framework. FINDINGS Four main strategies corresponding to the key concepts were mapped in a framework. Participants had a consensual agreement on the importance of the developed framework, they confirmed its completeness and practicality. In addition, participants found that the developed framework is logical, and confirmed that it is applicable for its purpose. CONCLUSION The developed framework presents an opportunity to respond to the gaps in nursing pain education in the context of limited resources settings such as Rwanda. It can also be applied in nursing practice and nursing research, aligning with the need of improving the quality of care of suffering children. Furthermore, the framework can be adapted and utilized to meet the needs of healthcare professionals other than nurses. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Strategies are suggested to improve the ability of nurse educators and preceptors in clinical settings to facilitate the acquisition of pediatric pain management competencies by the next generation of nurses. Future Rwandan nurses could then use the competencies acquired to provide optimal health care to children with pain in the best way possible during their practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intramuscular injections, which children frequently experience during hospitalization, are one of the most significant causes of pain. Pain control is an important part of care. Therefore, it is necessary to provide practical methods in the field of nursing care to reduce injection-related pain. AIM This study aimed to determine the effect of the Helfer skin tap technique on pain, anxiety, and fear in children undergoing intramuscular injection. METHOD This randomized controlled clinical study (NCT05250804) was conducted in a pediatric emergency department between January and July 2022. A total of 64 children aged 4-10 years were randomly divided into two groups: 32 children in the Helfer skin tap group (HG), and 32 children in the control group (CG). Data were collected using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale, the Child Anxiety Scale-State, and the Child Fear Scale. RESULTS After the intramuscular injection, children in the HG had significantly lower levels of pain, anxiety, and fear than those in the CG, with mean scores of 3.25±1.50 versus 5.18±1.51, 5.87±1.56, versus 6.23±1.46, and 1.68±0.53 versus 3.15±0.76, respectively (p<0.001 for all scores). CONCLUSION The Helfer skin tap technique has positive effects on pain, anxiety, and fear in children during intramuscular injection. This technique can be used by nurses to reduce the pain, anxiety, and fear felt by children receiving an intramuscular injection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain management of vaso-occlusive crises is a fundamental priority in the lifelong care of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. AIM This study examined nurses' attitudes towards caring for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and SCD pain management in those with vaso-occlusive pain. METHOD A structured, self-reporting survey was provided to a convenience sample of 298 nurses across 10 hospitals serving Jordan's northern and middle regions. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for data analysis. RESULTS Most nurses (77%) perceived their experience caring for children with SCD as positive. Many nurses (65%) felt frustrated about caring for these children during painful episodes. Participants identified workload and inadequate time as limiting their ability to address the analgesic needs of children with SCD. Receiving structured education specialized in pain management and more years of experience in nursing significantly predicted less hesitancy in administering opioid-based analgesia. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study provided further insight into factors that potentially contribute to vaso-occlusive pain crises frequently being poorly managed and inadequately addressed among pediatric patients. Nurses' attitudes and understanding of SCD pain management must be addressed to advance the clinical practice of managing pain in children with SCD.

Abstract
With advances in biomedical sciences, a growing number of conditions affecting children have evolved from being considered life-limiting to almost chronic diseases. However, improvements in survival rates often come at a cost of increased medical complexity and lengthy hospitalizations, which can be associated with a poorer quality of life. This is where pediatric palliative care (PPC) can play a significant role. PPC is a specialty of healthcare that focuses on the prevention and relief of suffering in children with serious conditions. Unfortunately, despite the well-identified need for PPC services across pediatric specialties, multiple misconceptions persist. Common myths about palliative care are identified and deconstructed in light of the most recent evidenced-based references in the field to provide guidance to healthcare providers to address these. PPC is often associated with end-of-life care, loss of hope, and cancer. Some healthcare providers and parents also believe that information like diagnosis should be withheld from children for their emotional protection. These examples of misconceptions hinder the integration of pediatric palliative care and its additional layer of support and clinical expertise. PPC providers have advanced communication skills, are able to instill hope in the face of uncertainty, are trained to initiate and implement individualized pain and symptom management plans, and understand how to improve the quality of life in children with serious illnesses. Improved awareness about the scope of PPC is needed to ensure that children benefit from the maximum expertise and support throughout their complex health trajectories.

Abstract
Background Pain is the most disturbing and annoying symptom experienced by children. However, it obtains poor attention in low- and middle-income countries particularly. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude and factors associated with pediatric pain management among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia. Methodology : A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1 to April 30, 2021. The knowledge and attitude of nurses were measured by using Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitudes Survey regarding Pain (P-NKAS). Descriptive and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to determine factors associated with knowledge and attitude. The strength of the association was presented by using adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result A total of 234 (86.03% response rate) nurses were included and 67.1% of nurses had good knowledge and 89.3% had favorable attitudes towards pediatric pain management. The factors associated with good knowledge were having Bachelor’s Degree and above [AOR = 2.1, P = 0.015], having in-service training [AOR = 2.4, P = 0.008] and favorable attitude [AOR = 3.3, CI = 0.008]. The nurses who demonstrated good knowledge [AOR = 3.3, P = 0.003] and those who had Bachelor’s Degree and above [AOR = 2.8, P = 0.03] were found to have favorable attitude. Conclusion The nurses who were working in pediatrics care areas had good knowledge and favorable attitude towards pediatrics pain management. However, improvements are needed to eradicate misconceptions; particularly, on pediatrics pain perception, opioid analgesia, multimodal analgesia, and non-pharmacologic pain therapies. Nurses who had higher level of education, in-service training, favorable attitude were found to be knowledgeable. Furthermore, nurses who had higher levels of education and knowledge were found to have favorable attitude.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undertreatment of pain in children is an international problem as many children reports unresolved moderate to severe pain. One key factor which may contribute to under treatment of pain in children by nurses is lack of knowledge. In Ghana opportunities for nurses to learn about pediatric pain have been limited due to gaps in the undergraduate curriculum and inadequate continuing professional education post qualification. OBJECTIVE To assess tutors' knowledge and attitudes to pediatric pain management before and after an educational workshop. DESIGN Single group pre-test-post-test design. SETTING One Ghanaian Nursing Training College. PARTICIPANTS All (37) nursing tutors in the college. METHOD Total population sampling was used to access 37 tutors, data were collected using the Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain at 3 stages; pre-intervention, immediately after the train-the-trainer based Pediatric Pain Educational Workshop and at 3-months follow-up. Data from the survey were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS Results at pre-intervention showed low scores in the survey. However, post-intervention results at both the immediate and 3-months follow-up stages revealed a significant increase from pre-intervention: Mean (SD) of 20.35 (4.56), to immediate follow-up Mean (SD) 26.93 (5.02), and 3-months follow-up Mean (SD) 25.19 (5.80) and a p-value of <0.001. CONCLUSION The results suggest tutors' knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management can be directly improved through a nurse tutor focused educational program. However, knowledge declines with time and as such there is the need for regular update through Continuing Professional Development activities.

Abstract
PURPOSE Unrelieved pain among hospitalized children is a common problem that affects all aspects of children's health and their quality of life. Cultural and language differences between nurses and patients have been shown to impact the quality and safety of nursing care and management for children with pain. The aim of this study was to identify the cultural factors, barriers, and facilitators impacting the assessment and management of children's pain by expatriate nurses in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN AND METHODS A qualitative descriptive design was employed in this study. A sample of 16 nurses was conveniently recruited and interviewed through face-to-face semistructured interviews. Each interview lasted between 30 and 60 min and was audio-recorded. Content analysis was used to analyze the transcripts. Transcripts were carefully read, significant statements were highlighted, coded, categorized, and clustered thematically. RESULTS Three main themes were identified, namely, (I) low priority of children's pain, (II) culture and religious challenges, and (III) communication challenges. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Cultural and language differences described by expatriate nurses hindered their care of children with pain. A systematic education for expatriate nurses, children, and families is urgently needed to enhance inter/cross-cultural understandings and improve childcare in Saudi Arabia. This study identifies the unique challenges faced by expatriate nurses in Saudi Arabia. The findings reveal how a lack of knowledge about cultural values and beliefs can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts between nurses, children, and families and can have an impact on childcare and pain. It also highlights the need to improve pain management practices in multicultural healthcare settings, similar to those of Saudi Arabia and neighboring Arab nations, and across the globe.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the level of child and adolescent psychiatric staff's knowledge regarding pain management, to determine group differences between the medically more educated (physicians, nurses) and the less educated (psychologists, educators, special therapists) and to investigate the influence of gender, age, or professional experience as well as staff's own pain experiences. METHODS A total of 193 staff members from different professional backgrounds from three independent child and adolescent psychiatry clinics in Northern Germany were tested using the German version of the Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain Shriner's revision (PNKAS-Sr). RESULTS In total, the staff scored correctly 66% of the inventory questions. There was no difference between medically more educated and less educated staff members regarding the knowledge of pain management. The main factors influencing PNKAS score were age, profession, and pain education training. CONCLUSIONS Although chronic pain is not one of the main aspects of continuing education in child and adolescent psychiatry, the resulting level of knowledge was comparable to results of similar surveys with paediatric staffs. Nevertheless, further education is needed to enhance knowledge and understanding of children's pain in child psychiatry staff in order to professionally treat patients with chronic somatic and mental illnesses.

Abstract
Inadequate pain management affects the patient outcome. Pain assessment and management are fundamental in nursing care, and nurses must be equipped with adequate knowledge and a positive attitude toward pain assessment and management. This study aims to evaluate nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding pain assessment and management at King Fahad Hospital, Al-Madinah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey, using a self-administered questionnaire, was conducted from January to February 2020 with 660 registered nurses working in the Emergency Department, critical care units, inpatient and outpatient departments at King Fahad Hospital in Al-Medinah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Of the 660 nurses, 291 responded, resulting in a response rate of 44.09%. The participants’ scores ranged from 17.7% to 100%, with a mean score 45.29%. The majority of the participants (70.1%) had a poor level of knowledge and attitudes (score < 50%). Nurses working in the outpatient department scored significantly higher than the group working in the Emergency Department and inpatient wards. Deficient knowledge and negative attitudes were found and nurses continue to underassess and undertreat pain. Nursing school curricula and in-service continuous education must equip nurses with the required knowledge and attitudes to enable them to manage pain effectively.

Abstract
PURPOSE Community pharmacists (CPs) frequently attend to pediatric patients with pain but limited data exist regarding their knowledge of and attitude to effective management of pediatric pain in Nigeria. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of and attitude to pediatric pain management among CPs in Nigeria. PATIENTS AND METHODS A validated and pilot-tested questionnaire, the Community Pharmacists Survey on Pediatric Pain, was administered to 517 eligible participants at the 38th Annual National Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria. Independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used for inferential statistical analyses. RESULTS CPs with additional higher academic qualifications and clinically related additional academic degrees had significantly higher mean knowledge scores relative to first degree only holder counterpart (t= 4.33, p< 0.05, Eta2=0.05) and those without clinically related second degrees (t= 6.34, p< 0.05, Eta2=0.27). Pain knowledge among the study cohort also varied significantly by age group, years of practicing community pharmacy, ownership structure of premises, geographical location of practice and previous exposure to pain management training (F(4370)=2.858, p=0.025, Eta2=0.03; F(3371)=3.985, p=0.008, Eta2=0.03; F(2372)=3.643, p=0.027, Eta2=0.02; F(5369)=4.497, p=0.01, Eta2=0.06; F(2372)=3.587, p=0.029, Eta2=0.02), respectively. CONCLUSION Community pharmacists' knowledge of and attitude to pediatric pain management in Nigeria appeared sub-optimal, and requires regular targeted educational intervention to fill the identified gaps, improve service delivery and patient outcomes.

Abstract
Two million children are admitted to hospital every year in the UK and between 59% and 94% will experience pain, with 27-40% of them experiencing moderate to severe pain. Currently, there are a number of well-researched guidelines on children's pain available, yet pain prevalence is high. Despite the guidelines, there is a lack of an overall framework that includes the necessary components to deliver effective pain management. This study was built on previous work about key elements that support children's pain management, by exploring their relevance and practical application with 43 healthcare practitioners. We carried out focus groups with band 5 nurses (n = 6) and advanced nurse practitioners (n = 11) and semistructured interviews with pain nurses (n = 16) and consultants (n = 10). We also presented and discussed our findings with an advisory group. Findings demonstrated that the following elements were considered to be important: delivering pain management with confidence, supporting colleagues with protocols and guidance, empowering parents to be involved in pain management, and adopting an individual approach to a child and family. These elements formed the basis of a framework for children's pain management. Some practitioners indicated that pain management required education and more resources, and that the culture of an area could influence pain management practice. The framework brings together elements that have the potential to improve the management of children's pain through its use as an education tool. Each interrelated element of the framework plays an important part in the overall management of children's pain. The need now is to make the dissemination of the findings accessible to health care practitioners, parents, and educators. Next steps include the development of infographic posters, an animation, and a free online course, which will incorporate the use of Bloom's taxonomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The professional knowledge and personal attitudes of pediatric clinicians regarding pediatric pain are the most important factors impacting pediatric pain relief care. Few studies have investigated the knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management of clinicians in Taiwan. PURPOSE Research purposes were to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of pediatric clinicians regarding pain management and to describe the barriers of applying pain management across pediatric and neonatal settings. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive comparative design was used. Pediatric clinicians from two medical centers and three general hospitals in Taiwan were recruited to complete a questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 264 clinicians participated. On 33 questions measuring knowledge of pain management, the average correct response rate was 23.67. A significantly positive relationship was identified between clinicians' knowledge and prior training experience. Professional degree attainment significantly impacted clinicians' attitudes about pediatric pain management. Clinicians at pediatric wards showed more positive attitudes than did clinicians at either pediatric intensive care units or neonatal intensive care units. Five barriers to pediatric pain management were found. CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that pediatric clinicians in Taiwan need further education regarding pediatric pain management. This study will also helpful in implementing multidisciplinary pediatric pain management programs to improve the quality of pediatric practice in pediatric care settings of hospitals.

Abstract
Aim To explore the educational needs of nurses on children's pain management. Design A descriptive qualitative study. Methods Individual and group interviews were conducted among 28 nurses and four nurse managers at four hospitals in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The recorded interviews were later transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed based on a conceptual interest in the educational needs on paediatric pain management. Results Nurses were acquainted with pain assessment of children who can verbally communicate. They mainly used drugs in treating pain and were familiar with the use of some non-pharmacological interventions. Notwithstanding, they desired to know more about pain assessment for children with non-functional speech. Additionally, they were interested in learning more about both drug and nondrug pain relief methods for children. The sampled nurses and nurse managers indicated diverse preferences on the nature of the paediatric pain educational programme based on their personal choices and working dynamics.

Abstract
Background Acute pain is frequently encountered in the prehospital setting, and therefore, a fundamental aspect of quality emergency care. Research has shown a positive association between healthcare providers’ knowledge of, and attitudes towards pain and pain management practices. This study aimed to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of emergency care providers regarding acute pain assessment and management in the prehospital setting, in the Western Cape, South Africa. The specific objectives were to, identify gaps in pain knowledge; assess attitudes regarding pain assessment and management; describe pain assessment and management behaviours and practices; and identify barriers to and enablers of pain care. Methods A web-based descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among emergency care providers of all qualifications, using a face-validated Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Pain survey. Results Responses of 100 participants were included in the analysis. The survey response rate could not be calculated. The mean age of respondents was 34.74 (SD 8.13) years and the mean years’ experience 10.02 (SD 6.47). Most respondents were male (69%), employed in the public/government sector (93%) as operational practitioners (85%) with 54% of respondents having attended medical education on pain care in the last 2 years. The mean percentage for knowledge and attitudes regarding pain among emergency care providers was 58.01% (SD 15.66) with gaps identified in various aspects of pain and pain care. Practitioners with higher qualifications, more years’ experience and those who did not attend medical education on pain, achieved higher scores. Alcohol and drug use by patients were the most selected barrier to pain care while the availability of higher qualified practitioners was the most selected enabler. When asked to record pain scores, practitioners were less inclined to assign scores which were self-reported by the patients in the case scenarios. The participant dropout rate was 35%. Conclusion Our results suggest that there is suboptimal knowledge and attitudes regarding pain among emergency care providers in the Western Cape, South Africa. Gaps in pain knowledge, attitudes and practices were identified. Some barriers and enablers of pain care in the South African prehospital setting were identified but further research is indicated.

Abstract
Pain is one of the commonest reasons why children visit the hospital. Inadequately treated pain in children can negatively affect their physical, psychological, and social well-being; it also places financial burden on families of affected children and healthcare systems in general. Considering the eventual suffering of vulnerable children and their families if nursing students are insufficiently educated and ill-prepared, the current study aimed at assessing final year nursing student's knowledge and attitudes pertaining to pediatric pain. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 final year undergraduate nursing students at a private university college in Ghana. In addition to their ages and gender, the students responded to the 42 individual items on the Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey regarding pain (PNKAS) instrument. Descriptive statistical analysis was aided by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 software. The mean age of the final year nursing students was 29 years (range of 21 to 47 years); a majority of them were females (78%). Participants had an average (SD) correct answer score of 44.0% (10.6%). Good pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes were observed in items that were related to the individualized and multidimensional nature of the pain experience and its treatment, benefits of pre-emptive analgesia, pharmacodynamics, and pain assessment. Poor pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes occurred in items that focused on pain perceptions, opioid drug administration, useful pain medications, pain physiology, and nonpharmacological pain management interventions. Final year nursing students have insufficient knowledge and attitudes toward children's pain management. Areas of good and poor pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes should be considered when designing and implementing educational interventions on this subject. Curricular revisions should be made on existing nursing curriculum to lay more emphasis on children's pain management and use educational interventions that support knowledge translation for improved care.

Abstract
Despite the existence of protocols for effective pain control, pediatric pain is still high, due to scarce knowledge of its treatment, especially regarding opioids. This study aimed to evaluate doctors and nurses' knowledge of pain treatment and the use of opioids in children, before and after the implementation of Law 38/2010, that represented an important step in guaranteeing patients' rights to gain access to appropriate services for pain control and palliative care in Italy and in establishing the obligation of specific training programs in this matter for health professionals. An ad hoc questionnaire was developed and administered before (investigation A) and after (investigation B) the issuance of the Law. In B both doctors and nurses showed a slight but significant increase in correct answers and a reduction in incorrect ones, mainly concerning the category Myths and Prejudices. In both investigations doctors and nurses showed adequate general knowledge, yet there were some gaps regarding the specific knowledge of opioid drugs. Most of the participants were not familiar with the Law and its provisions.Investigation B showed an improvement in health professionals' knowledge, perhaps due to a hospital environment that followed the provisions of Law 38/2010. Nevertheless, the establishment of training courses according to the Law is needed to improve the knowledge of opioids, as well as to dispel deeply rooted myths and prejudices on pediatric pain.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nurses encounter children who report of pain of diverse and unknown causes in their professional work. The current study therefore assessed and compared nursing students and nurses' knowledge and attitudes pertaining to children's pain in the Ghanaian context. The goal of this was to have a baseline information to guide the development and implementation of the content for a sustainable educational programme (short-course) for nursing students and nurses in Ghana. METHODS Between October and December 2018, a cross-sectional study was carried out among 554 final year nursing students and 65 nurses in Ghana. The Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (PNKAS) was used to collect data from participants who were affiliated to four educational institutions and eight hospitals. Data were descriptively and inferentially analyzed using chi-square test of independence, independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS Our findings revealed that nursing students and nurses generally had unsatisfactory knowledge and attitudes towards pain management in children. Nursing students however, had significantly higher scores than nurses in the total PNKAS score and in 10 out of the 13 identified item-areas. Greater scores were obtained by nursing students in areas which were related to pain physiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology of analgesics and pain perceptions (p < .05). All the participating nurses could not accurately determine: the onset of action of orally administered analgesics, equianalgesia of orally administered morphine, and the right dosage of prescribed morphine for a child who consistently reported of moderate to severe pain. CONCLUSION Final year nursing students and nurses have unsatisfactory knowledge and attitudes regarding children's pain; which reiterates the need for urgent and effective educational efforts in this area. Regular in-service training should be offered to post-registration nurses to enhance their pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes for improved pain care in children.
