Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between depressive symptoms, leukocyte telomere length-a marker of cellular ageing, and survival amongst lung cancer patients. DESIGN Patients with non-small cell lung cancer were recruited from a university-affiliated cancer center clinic. MAIN OUTCOME Patients (N = 67) reported on depressive symptoms and provided a blood sample for leukocyte telomere length assessment at baseline and at a 3-month follow-up. Survival status was tracked over 3 years. RESULTS Age at diagnosis and depressive symptoms, as measured by the CES-D, were associated with shorter leukocyte telomere length (p < .05), although only age at diagnosis contributed statistical significance to the model. Depressive symptoms predicted shorter survival from date of diagnosis (p < .01). Patients who reported experiencing clinically meaningful levels of depressive symptoms (CES-D scores ≥ 16) demonstrated shorter survival than those who reported sub-clinical levels of depressive symptoms (p < .05). Leukocyte telomere length did not emerge as a predictor of shorter survival. CONCLUSION Clinically meaningful levels of depressive symptoms are associated with shorter survival amongst lung cancer patients. These findings support the on-going efforts to screen all cancer patients for low mood and to investigate mechanisms linking depressive symptoms and shorter survival in cancer contexts.

Abstract
Aging is associated with functional and metabolic decline and is a risk factor for all noncommunicable diseases. Even though mice are routinely used for modeling human aging and aging-related conditions, no comprehensive assessment to date has been conducted on normative mouse aging. To address this gap, the Study of Longitudinal Aging in Mice (SLAM) was designed and implemented by the National Institute on Aging (NIA/NIH) as the mouse counterpart to the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA). In this manuscript, we describe the premise, study design, methodologies, and technologies currently employed in SLAM. We also discuss current and future study directions. In this large population mouse study, inbred C57BL/6J and outbred UM-HET3 mice of both sexes are longitudinally evaluated for functional, phenotypic, and biological health, and collection of biospecimens is conducted throughout their life span. Within the longitudinal cohorts, a cross-sectional arm of the study has also been implemented for the well-controlled collection of tissues to generate a biorepository. SLAM and studies stemming from SLAM seek to identify and characterize phenotypic and biological predictors of mouse aging and age-associated conditions, examine the degrees of functional and biomolecular variability that occur within inbred and genetically heterogeneous mouse populations with age, and assess whether these changes are consistent with alterations observed in human aging in BLSA. The findings from these studies will be critical for evaluating the utility of mouse models for studying different aspects of aging, both in terms of interpreting prior findings and designing and implementing future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pentosidine (PEN), a well-defined advanced glycation end product (AGE), may be affected by psychological status, given the recent findings regarding AGE receptor functions. Because AGEs can be a factor in aging and in the development or worsening of many degenerative diseases, it is important to find a way to reduce the PEN levels in our body. This study aims to investigate novel factors associated with PEN levels. METHODS A cross-sectional study involving 106 female participants (aged 59-69) was conducted in a tea-producing district in Japan. The serum concentration of PEN was detected and evaluated in relation to the participants' psychological status, which was assessed using the Japanese version of the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and lifestyle factors. Factors that were significantly associated with PEN were analysed using multiple linear regression analyses. Significance was defined as p < .05. RESULTS The serum PEN concentrations were significantly and positively associated with the total GHQ scores and BMI after controlling for covariates (standardised beta coefficient (B) = 0.26, p < .01; B = 0.27, p < .01, respectively). In addition, the PEN levels were significantly lower in participants who consumed seven cups or more of green tea per day than those who consumed six or fewer cups per day (B = 0.19, p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Low GHQ scores (i.e. better psychological well-being) and green tea consumption may be helpful in decreasing AGEs.
