Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to determine the effect of hand-foot exercises on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy-related pain severity, falls, and quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS The study was conducted in the outpatient chemotherapy unit of a public hospital between 25 April-31 December 2022. The enrolled 39 patients were randomly assigned to the intervention (n:19) and control (n:20) groups. The hand-foot exercises program was applied to the intervention group in three sessions a day and three days a week fashion for 8 weeks at home. No intervention was applied to the control group other than routine treatment and care. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews in the first interview and the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th weeks. The exercise program adherence of the intervention group was followed up through telephone/face-to-face interviews in weeks 1-8. Data were collected using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale, Fall Follow-Up Form, the CIPNAT scale, EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-CR29 scales. Mann-Whitney U Test, Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed test, and Friedman test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The study found that as of week 4th, the intervention group experienced less pain severity than the control group (p < 0.001); at week 8th, the peripheral neuropathy symptoms of the intervention group decreased compared to the control group (p < 0.05); at weeks 2nd,4th,6th,8th, there was no statistically significant difference in falls (p > 0.05); at week 8th, while there was no significant difference between the groups regarding colorectal cancer quality of life (p > 0.05), the overall cancer quality of life improved in the intervention group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The hand-foot exercises program is effective in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy-related symptoms, pain severity, and overall cancer quality of life. TRIAL REGISTRATION www. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of proprioceptive training on hand dexterity, upper limb function, and quality of life (QoL) in people with Parkinson disease (PD) compared with no or other active interventions. DATA SOURCES Medline PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PEDro, and Web of Science databases were searched to identify published studies until February 2023. STUDY SELECTION Peer-reviewed English publications of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of proprioceptive training conducted among people with PD. DATA EXTRACTION Study characteristics, exercise program type and dosage, outcome of interest, and between-group comparisons of post-test results of intervention and comparison groups. DATA SYNTHESIS Eight RCTs were included, involving 344 people with PD. Six RCTs contributed to meta-analyses. There was very low certainty of evidence that proprioceptive training may improve dominant hand (standard mean difference [SMD] 0.34, 95% CI 0.08-0.60, P=.01) and non-dominant hand (SMD 0.36, 95% CI 0.10-0.63, P<.01) fine motor dexterity, and dominant hand gross manual dexterity (SMD 1.73, 95% CI 0.30-3.16, P=.02), following 2-8 weeks of proprioceptive training. There was no evidence of effects on non-dominant hand gross manual dexterity, upper limb function, and QoL after proprioceptive training. CONCLUSIONS Findings regarding the effect of proprioceptive training on hand dexterity in the short-term are inconclusive. The small sample size likely limited effect detection. Future large RCTs should compare proprioceptive training with no intervention and perform comprehensive biomechanical analysis to gain a clearer idea of its effects. Incorporating longer-duration proprioceptive training programs is also recommended to investigate long-lasting effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review primarily aims to identify the optimal physiotherapeutic intervention to improve hand dexterity in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients. The secondary objectives were to identify the hand dexterity physiotherapeutic interventions available for PD patients, and to determine the quality of these interventions. REVIEW METHODS Eight electronic databases were systematically searched to identify relevant randomized controlled trial full-text articles using the established search strategy. The primary outcomes of interest were measurements for hand dexterity and activities of daily living (ADL). RESULTS A total of 11 studies comprising 647 participants with PD were included. Most studies had a high risk of performance bias and an unclear risk of selection bias. The intervention training period ranged from a single session to 12 weeks. Compared to their respective control group, eight out of 11 studies revealed significant results in hand dexterity, two out of three studies reported positive effects on ADL, four of seven studies showed significant improvements in upper limb motor performance, and two studies perceived positive benefits in terms of overall quality of life. Five out of 11 studies that recorded the occurrence of adverse events reported no adverse events post-intervention. CONCLUSION The dearth of evidence made it difficult to support any one intervention as the best intervention when compared to the other PD treatments in upper limb rehabilitation. Regardless, a home-based dexterity rehabilitation programme is still a promising approach to enhance dexterity-related functional abilities.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effect of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on lower extremity dexterity in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) and to investigate the relationship between this effect and the effect of DBS on measures of different walking characteristics, and other features of Parkinson's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six PwPD were included. Assessment was performed twice with DBS "on" and DBS "off" state. RESULTS The LEDT scores of both extremities, the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale-motor section (UPDRS-III), the 10-Meter Walk Test (TMWT), the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), the Figure-of-Eight Walk Test (FEWT), and the Three-Meter Backward Walk Test (TMBWT) scores were significantly better in "on" DBS condition than "off" DBS condition. The effect of DBS on lower extremity dexterity is related to age and levodopa equivalent daily dosage (LEDD). The effect of DBS on lower extremity dexterity and the effect of DBS on the bradykinesia, TUG, the FEWT, and the TMBWT were also related. CONCLUSIONS DBS has a positive effect on lower extremity dexterity. Clinical characteristics such as age and LEDD and the effect of DBS on bradykinesia, walking with turning, curved walking, and backward walking is related with the effect of DBS on lower extremity dexterity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) may progressively reduce the upper limb's functionality. Currently, there is no standardized upper limb functional capacity assessment in PD in the rehabilitation field. OBJECTIVE To identify specific outcome measurements to assess upper limbs in PD and access functional capacity. METHODS We systematically reviewed and analyzed the literature in English published from August/2012 to August/2022 according to PRISMA. The following keywords were used in our search: "upper limbs" OR "upper extremity" and "Parkinson's disease." Two researchers searched independently, including studies accordingly to our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Registered at PROSPERO CRD42021254486. RESULTS We found 797 studies, and 50 were included in this review (n = 2.239 participants in H&Y stage 1-4). The most common upper limbs outcome measures found in the studies were: (i) UPDRS-III and MDS-UPDRS to assess the severity and progression of PD motor symptoms (tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity) (ii) Nine Hole Peg Test and Purdue Pegboard Test to assess manual dexterity; (iii) Spiral test and Funnel test to provoke and assess freezing of upper limbs; (iv) Technology assessment such as wearables sensors, apps, and other device were also found. CONCLUSION We found evidence to support upper limb impairments assessments in PD. However, there is still a large shortage of specific tests to assess the functional capacity of the upper limbs. The upper limbs' functional capacity is insufficiently investigated during the clinical and rehabilitation examination due to a lack of specific outcome measures to assess functionality.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present the latest available evidence on the effects of a VR-based therapy on the manual dexterity of PD subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS The search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and PEDro databases. Were included in the systematic review Randomized Clinical Trials, Pilot and Feasibility studies published up to December 2020. The studies should include at least one of the following assessments: Box and Blocks Test, 9-Hole Peg Test; Purdue Pegboard Test. PEDro Scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. RESULTS Eight studies were included in the review. Most studies have shown an improvement in outcomes for manual dexterity, but most of them presented a high risk of bias with low methodological quality. A high heterogeneity was observed in the protocols used for each study. CONCLUSION The results suggest that VR-based therapy has great potential and feasibility to be used as a manual dexterity rehabilitation protocol in PD subjects. However, these results must be interpreted carefully and studies with greater methodological rigor must be conducted.Implications For RehabilitationRehabilitation programs using virtual reality seem to have greater adherence to the user.Immersive virtual reality systems seem to do better in manual dexterity than non-immersive systems.It is plausible to use virtual reality systems in telerehabilitation for manual dexterity training in subjects with Parkinson's' Disease.The use of Virtual Reality by the therapist in a rehabilitation program allows him to modulate the exercises, enabling a wide variety of therapeutic options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex hormones affect the pathogenesis of Parkinson patients and it has been suggested that gender is the most important factor in the development and progression of Parkinson's disease. Studies have shown that the second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is affected by the prenatal testosterone and estrogen levels and can predict predisposition to disease. In addition, decreased muscle strength in people with Parkinson's has been repeatedly reported. Hand grip strength (HGS) is a suitable measure to evaluate the musculoskeletal system among the elderly and it is considered as an indicator of the overall strength of the body. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between Parkinson's disease and HGS and 2D:4D ratio. METHODS In this study 117 elderly men with Parkinson disease (mean age of 61.66 ± 11.28 years) and 156 healthy control subjects (mean age of 61.86 ± 6.29 years) participated. After determining the level of disability of Parkinson patients by a neurologist (level of disability in the range of 1-4), anthropometric indices (height, weight, length of the second and fourth fingers) and maximum HGS were measured. RESULTS Although 2D:4D ratios (right and left hand) of male patients with Parkinson's disease were higher than those of healthy males, this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.12, P = 0.40; respectively). Conversely, HGS for the right and left hands of Parkinson patients were significantly lower than those of healthy males (P = 0.02, P = 0.03; respectively). The results showed a significant negative relationship between Parkinson disease and the right and left HGS (R = -0.16, P = 0.005; R = -0.17, P = 0.003; respectively). Parkinson disease had no significant relationship with 2D:4D of the right hand, left hand, mean finger ratio and DR-L 2D:4D (P > 0.05). The regression results showed that the right and left HGS were not able to predict Parkinson disease (P = 0.25, P = 0.16; respectively). CONCLUSION We concluded that HGS was negatively associated with the Parkinson disease, but conversely, 2D:4D may not be a valuable biomarker of elevated risk of Parkinson in elderly males.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the feasibility and effects on manual dexterity and the quality of life (QoL) of a 12-week home calligraphic training program in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS A pilot study with participants recruited from the Movement Disorders consultation at the Hospital 12 de Octubre (Madrid). The main outcome, manual dexterity, was assessed using the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT). Secondary outcomes included clinical rating scales that contemplate aspects related to manual dexterity (DextQ-24, UPDRSII, UPDRSIII), and QoL (PDQ-39 and EuroQoL-5D). RESULTS Thirty PD patients (57% males) with a mean age of 66.11 (9.76) years and 93% adherence rate. The PPT scores improved significantly (p < 0.0001) from T0 (start of the study) to T1 (after 24 weeks). No statistically significant change was found in DextQ-24, UPDRS-II and UPDRS-III, but a clear improvement was observed in the QoL measurement: EuroQoL-5D (p < 0.0001), PDQ-39 (p < 0.0001) and modified PDQ-39 (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to demonstrate the feasibility and improvement in hand dexterity assessed by the PPT for patients diagnosed with PD after a 12-week home calligraphic training program. A significant improvement was noted in the QoL measurements, such as the PDQ-39, modified PDQ-39, and EuroQoL-5D.Implications for RehabilitationMost patients with Parkinson's disease suffer from impaired manual dexterity, making it difficult to perform activities of daily living such as eating, buttoning, or shaving.A 12-week home calligraphic training program could improve hand dexterity in these patients.The advantage of this home calligraphic trainingis is that it is an easy-to-perform, low-cost and no side effects.This training also improves their quality of life.

Abstract
Integrating physical activity interventions at the workplace can have positive effects on the employees' health. This study aimed to evaluate a physical activity break with coordinative exercises (PAB) including juggling and balance tasks and to assess its effects on motor abilities. Thirty-two university employees were randomly allocated to an intervention (IG:20) or a control (CG:12) group. The IG participated two times per week for 12 weeks in a PAB with a duration of 15 to 20 min. We measured the unimanual, bimanual finger, and hand dexterity with the Purdue Pegboard Test, the reaction time with the Fall Stick Test, and the dynamic balance with the Y Balance Test. Juggling performance was assessed by measuring the time(s) of performing a three-ball-cascade. Furthermore, an evaluation of the PAB was executed. Participants in the IG improved their juggling performance after six and twelve weeks. These increases were significantly different compared to the CG. However, no other parameters changed significantly. The evaluation showed that the PAB was enjoyable and led to subjective improvements in the participants health and working routine. To conclude, PAB can lead to improvements in juggling performance, subjective health, and the working routine.

Abstract
Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition, predominantly affecting older adults. Preference-based measures (PBMs) can be used to make decisions about the cost-utility of different treatments. There are currently no PBMs for health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for PD. A previous study identified important health domains for individuals with PD and developed an item pool from existing measures per domain. The current study aims to contribute to the development of a new disease-specific PBM of HRQoL for PD by reducing the current pool of items according to the preferences of individuals with PD. Methods Fifty-three participants completed a visual analogue scale (VAS) of self-perceived health, the prototype PBM measure, and an item importance rating. To reduce the item pool, the following were calculated: (1) inter-item correlations; (2) impact of each item based on item performance and importance rating; (3) directionality of response options by comparing the VAS scores against each item. Results Participants (male = 54.7%, age = 60.0 ± 10.2) had a median Hoehn and Yahr score of 2.5 (interquartile range = 1). Items supported for inclusion by this analysis were sleep, fatigue, tremor, mood, walking, memory, and dexterity. Items demonstrating a logical decrease in VAS score with each increasing severity level were sleep, memory, tremor, fatigue, and mood. Conclusion This PBM will be critical for informing decisions about the cost-utility of PD treatments, guiding the resource allocation within our healthcare system. Future research will include cognitive debriefing with individuals with PD to refine item response options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yang-ge dancing is a culturally specific exercise in which people are required to perform motor skills in coordination with rhythmic music. As an integrated exercise with both physical (decelerating the progression of aged-related motor function degeneration) and mental benefits, it has gained great popularity in China, especially among middle-aged and older adults. It remains largely unknown whether Yang-ge dancing (YG) can effectively improve main symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), while conventional exercise rehabilitation program has been recommended in the hospital setting. To this end, this study aimed to investigate the comparative effects of exercise therapy on motor function of PD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample of 51 PD patients were randomly assigned to Yang-ge dancing, conventional exercise, or conventional exercise with music. Participants in each group performed 60 min per session, five sessions per week of interventions for 4 weeks. All the participants were assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-motor examination, Berg balance test, timed up and go test, and Purdue pegboard test. Motor performances were examined before and after intervention. RESULTS All the three groups were benefited from exercise. Compared to conventional exercise, the Yang-ge dancing and conventional exercise with music had additional positive effects in mobility with reference to baseline.In addition, compared to the two conventional exercise groups (either with/without music), the Yang-ge dancing further enhanced manual dexterity. CONCLUSION Exercise with rhythmic auditory stimulation optimized mobility in PD, while YG dance specifically contributed to improvement in manual dexterity. Abstract
Motor impairments are among the most relevant, evident, and disabling symptoms of Parkinson’s disease that adversely affect quality of life, resulting in limited autonomy, independence, and safety. Recent studies have demonstrated the benefits of physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs specifically targeted to the needs of Parkinsonian patients in supporting drug treatments and improving motor control and coordination. However, due to the expected increase in patients in the coming years, traditional rehabilitation pathways in healthcare facilities could become unsustainable. Consequently, new strategies are needed, in which technologies play a key role in enabling more frequent, comprehensive, and out-of-hospital follow-up. The paper proposes a vision-based solution using the new Azure Kinect DK sensor to implement an integrated approach for remote assessment, monitoring, and rehabilitation of Parkinsonian patients, exploiting non-invasive 3D tracking of body movements to objectively and automatically characterize both standard evaluative motor tasks and virtual exergames. An experimental test involving 20 parkinsonian subjects and 15 healthy controls was organized. Preliminary results show the system’s ability to quantify specific and statistically significant (p < 0.05) features of motor performance, easily monitor changes as the disease progresses over time, and at the same time permit the use of exergames in virtual reality both for training and as a support for motor condition assessment (for example, detecting an average reduction in arm swing asymmetry of about 14% after arm training). The main innovation relies precisely on the integration of evaluative and rehabilitative aspects, which could be used as a closed loop to design new protocols for remote management of patients tailored to their actual conditions.

Abstract
A clinical practice guideline on Parkinson disease was developed by an American Physical Therapy Association volunteer guideline development group that consisted of physical therapists and a neurologist. The guideline was based on systematic reviews of current scientific and clinical information and accepted approaches for management of Parkinson disease. The Spanish version of this clinical practice guideline is available as a supplement (Suppl. Appendix 1).

Abstract
IMPORTANCE People with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience motor and functional impairment that can negatively affect daily living and participation. OBJECTIVE To examine the occupational performance and hand function outcomes of people with PD who participated in a Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG® program. DESIGN Retrospective record review. SETTING Outcomes were extracted from patient charts at a hospital outpatient clinic. PARTICIPANTS Sixty-six clinic outpatients with PD who completed the LSVT BIG program. INTERVENTION An occupational therapist and a physical therapist who were certified in LSVT BIG administration delivered the 16-session LSVT BIG program. Outcomes and Measures: The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), grip strength, and Minnesota Manual Dexterity Test (MMDT) were administered before and after participation in LSVT BIG training. RESULTS For participant-identified COPM goals, pre-post changes were significant, ranging from 3 to 6 points for performance and satisfaction (p < .001). Grip strength in both hands showed significant gains; median scores for the right hand increased from 55.0 lb (interquartile range [IQR] 41.0, 70.0) to 64.0 lb (IQR 46.0, 80.0; p < .001) and for the left hand from 52.0 lb (IQR 39.0, 64.0) to 63.0 lb (IQR 44.5, 79.5; p < .001). MMDT median scores for right to left also significantly improved, from 124.0 s (IQR 113.0, 181.0) to 119.5 s (IQR 105.5, 163.5; p = .014). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Participation in the LSVT BIG program can improve perceived occupational performance and satisfaction and produce gains in hand strength and dexterity for people with PD. What This Article Adds: This study is the first retrospective review of data on occupational performance and hand function outcomes after participation in the LSVT BIG program. The findings of beneficial outcomes support the use of LSVT BIG in occupational therapy services to increase functional abilities among people with PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reduced coordination of precise small movements of the hand, wrist and fingers in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been mostly solved by medications and deep brain stimulation. The effects have been evaluated by clinical tests only. OBJECTIVE Virtual reality-based exergaming may enhance fine movements, decrease the medications dosage and provide an additional non-subjective evaluation. METHODS 3D pick-and-place task (10Cubes) has been developed in a virtual world. The person placed the virtual cubes by the virtual hand, an avatar of the real hand tracked by a Leap Motion Controller (LMC). The system computed the time of manipulating the cube, the total time, the average time, the speed, and the distance. It counted and managed the number of cubes touched, and calculated the hand shake level, i.e. the average tremor index. A pilot test was carried out in a healthy neurologically intact person and a patient with PD using a 3D head-mounted device (HMD) or LCD screen. RESULTS The results indicate that substantial and also statistically significant (p< 0.05) differences exist between both participants in all objective parameters; the most noteworthy is the average tremor index. However, we found the parameters only marginally different with 2D equipment. CONCLUSIONS The evaluation system of 10Cubes has proved applicable at an unchanged medication plan, but its clinical effectiveness could be confirmed with a randomized study.

Abstract
Physical activity, together with its ameliorative effects on Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms, remains a relatively unappreciated factor which may be beneficial for the treatment outcome. Contemporary evidence supports the positive effects of non-pharmacological approaches to PD symptom management, in particular the effects of the exercise on both, motor and non-motor symptoms. The aim of the study was to review the mechanisms of exercise-induced amelioration of PD symptoms. Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were searched using the following key words: "Parkinson and physical activity" OR "Parkinson disease and exercise" OR "Parkinson disease and lifestyle factors" OR "Parkinson disease and longevity". A total of 97 studies which investigated PD genetics and various forms of exercise and their etiologic impact on PD were reviewed. The studies were subdivided into four topic groups: 1) genetics of PD, 2) exercise and the brain, 3) physical activity and PD, 4) mind-body interventions, and discussed accordingly. Adequate levels of physical activity are associated with higher quality of life in PD patients. Physical activity may have protective and stimulatory effects for better functional efficiency in higher-level cognitive networks. It can also improve balance and motor functions by improving muscle strength. Given the etiologic evidence of the beneficial effects of physical activity on PD, albeit tentative, a concerted effort to elucidate the processes and outcomes of physical activity on ameliorating symptoms of PD must be undertaken.

Abstract
Objective This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Wuqinxi after one session and 12-week intervention on hand dexterity in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods Forty-six elderly participants with mild-to-moderate PD were randomly assigned to the groups trained with Wuqinxi (n = 23) or stretching (n = 23). All participants practiced 60 min session of either of these exercises, 2 sessions a week for 12 weeks in standing position. The score of Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) and time for Soda Pop Test (SPT) were performed to assess hand dexterity and motor function along assessing the 39 items of Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire before and after 12-week interventions. In addition, the PPT scores were compared before vs. after one session of either of these two exercise modes. Results Single session with either Wuqinxi or stretching exercise tended to improve PPT scores in PD patients. Furthermore, the improved SPT time was significant (P < 0.01) following 12-week training interventions with Wuqinxi (−1.32 ± 0.38 sec) or stretching (−0.89 ± 0.16 sec), which showed no group difference (P=0.734). However, only the participants in Wuqinxi group significantly improved the PPT scores of the dominant hand (+0.61 ± 1.34), both hand (+1.83 ± 3.13) and assemble (+2.04 ± 3.44) performance after 12-week training intervention. In parallel with improved hand dexterity and motor function, 12-week Wuqinxi training also significantly improved the patient's emotional wellbeing. Conclusion The Wuqinxi intervention could be safely and effectively applied to improve hand dexterity following single-session exercise or 12-week training, which were accompanied by improved quality of life in patients with mild-to-moderate PD.

Abstract
Objective To review studies assessing the efficacy of occupational therapy interventions on quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. Method We followed the international guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. Databases (PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, OTsekeer, Scopus, Cinhal, and Web of Science) were searched to identify randomized controlled trials of occupational therapy interventions in patients with Parkinson's disease up to 2019 and with no restriction on language. The primary outcome of the meta-analysis was the evaluation of quality of life following occupational therapy interventions. Because of the heterogeneity of the studies, we examined the data by using a random effect model. Results We identified 15 randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria, and 4 of these were included in the meta-analysis. Studies with a follow-up of 2 to 3 months showed that occupational therapy interventions significantly improved the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease, with a mean difference of -2.08 (95% confidence interval, -2.52 to -1.64; P < 0.00001). Studies reporting a longer follow-up (6-12 months) also showed that occupational therapy interventions improved the quality of life, with a mean difference of -2.56 (95% confidence interval, -3.52 to -1.61; P < 0.00001). Conclusion Different occupational therapy interventions may be effective in improving the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. However, because of the limited number of studies available, the strength of the evidence should be considered moderate.

Progressive muscle-strength protocol for the functionality of upper limbs and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson's disease: Pilot study. Complement Ther Med 2020; 52:102432. Abstract
The effects of physical-therapy intervention on the motor function of upper limbs and the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are not fully understood. We evaluated the effects of a progressive muscle-strengthening protocol for upper limbs on the functionality and quality of life. Patients were divided into two groups: Intervention (n = 6) and Control (n = 7). Assessment tools used were: Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire, Nine-Hole Peg Test (9HPT), Test d'Évaluation des Membres Supérieurs de Personnes Âgées (TEMPA), 10-Repetition Maximum (10-RM) and handgrip dynamometer, which were applied pre- and post-intervention, with follow-up for one month after the last training session. Only, the Intervention group (post-intervention) showed significant statistical differences, with the following outcomes: UPDRS III (p = 0.042); 9HPT, right (p = 0.028) and left side (p = 0.028); TEMPA for total right side (p = 0.028), left side (p = 0.028) and total bilateral tasks (p = 0.028); TEMPA task 2 - open a jar and take a spoonful of coffee (p = 0.028), task 3 - pick up a pitcher and pour water into a glass for right (p = 0.046) and left side (p = 0.028), task 5 - write on an envelope and stick on a stamp (p = 0.028), and task 6 - shuffle and deal playing cards (p = 0.028). We observed significant statistical differences between groups (post-intervention) for TEMPA task 6 (p = 0.032), total right side (p = 0.032), and total bilateral tasks (p = 0.032). An increase in the maximum load in the post-intervention stage, based on the 10-RM test, was observed on the right (p = 0.003) and left (p = 0.007) sides. Our results showed an improvement in upper-limb functionality in PD patients submitted to progressive muscle-strength training, although not in quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ageing process and several health conditions may increase tremor and reduce force steadiness and dexterity, which can severely impact on function and quality of life. Resistance training can evoke a range of neuromuscular adaptions that may significantly reduce tremor and/or increase force steadiness and/or dexterity in older adults, irrespective of their health condition. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature to determine if a minimum of 4 weeks' resistance training can reduce postural tremor and improve force steadiness and/or dexterity in older adults, defined as aged 65 years and over. METHODS An electronic search using Ovid, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus and EMBASE was performed. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. RESULTS Fourteen studies met the eligibility criteria, including six randomised controlled trials and two quasi-randomised controlled trials. All eight studies that recruited healthy older adults reported significant reductions in postural tremor and/or improvements in force steadiness and dexterity. Five out of seven studies that examined older adults with a particular health condition reported some improvements in force steadiness and/or dexterity. Specifically, significant benefits were observed for older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and essential tremor; however, small or no changes were observed for individuals with osteoarthritis or stroke. CONCLUSIONS Resistance training is a non-pharmacological treatment that can reduce tremor and improve force steadiness and dexterity in a variety of older adult populations. Future research should employ randomised controlled trials with larger sample sizes, better describe training programme methods, and align exercise prescription to current recommendations for older adults.

Abstract
Exercises for diabetic peripheral neuropathy remain controversial, especially with regard to recommended precautions and weightbearing exercises for individuals. We aimed to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of simple hand, finger, and foot exercises in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. After randomization, exercise (n = 51) and control (n = 53) groups received usual care and diabetic foot care education; only the exercise group performed exercises. Primary outcomes, including activities of daily living (assessed using the Patient Neurotoxicity Questionnaire), neuropathy severity (monofilament and vibration test), and pain (behavioral rating scale and Visual Analog Scale), and secondary outcomes, including physical function of the hand and foot (grip, pinch, finger counting time, and Timed Up and Go tests), were assessed at baseline, after the 8-week intervention, and at the 16-week follow-up. The exercise group showed significantly stronger improvements in motor score and specific activities of daily living, such as climbing stairs and performing work or chores. Our exercises can be used to improve limb function in patients with diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A single group, repeated measures design was used. INTRODUCTION Tremor can lead to impaired hand function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). Difficulty with handwriting is a common complaint in these patients suffering from hand tremors. The effect of hand resistance exercise on handwriting is unknown. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To explore the influence of 6 weeks of home-based hand resistance exercise on handwriting in individuals with PD and ET. METHODS Nine individuals with PD and 9 with ET participated in the study. The average age was 65.3 (6.0) years with an average disease duration of 7.8 years. Participants were instructed to perform a home-based, hand and arm resistance exercise program 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Samples of the area of handwriting and maximal grip strength were measured at baseline and after 6 weeks of exercise. The area of the handwriting sample and maximal grip strength measured before and after 6 weeks were compared. RESULTS Mean grip strength of the participants with PD improved after 6 weeks of hand resistance exercise (P = .031), but grip strength did not change in ET (P = .091). The size of the handwriting samples (words and sentences) did not change after exercise in either participants with PD or ET. DISCUSSION Micrographia in patients with PD and macrographia in patients with ET represent complex fine motor skills. More research is needed to understand what therapies could be effective in modifying the size and quality of handwriting. CONCLUSIONS The purpose of this feasibility study was to explore the influence of home-based wrist resistance exercise on handwriting in individuals with PD and ET. Despite small gains in grip strength, the size of the handwriting samples (words and sentences) did not change for patients with PD or ET following a 6-week home-based hand resistance exercise program.

Abstract
Background Hand functionality and finger dexterity are impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). These disturbances lead to a dependency in activities of daily living (ADL) and poor quality of life (QoL). Objective We aimed to evaluate whether a specific occupational therapy (OT) program is effective in improving finger and hand dexterity and its impact on ADL in PD patients. Methods We retrospectively studied PD patients, hospitalized for a 4-week multidisciplinary intensive rehabilitation treatment (MIRT) between January 2015 and June 2018. All patients underwent 1 h/day OT treatment, 5 days a week. The primary outcome measure was the O'Connor finger dexterity test; secondary outcome measures were the Minnesota dexterity test, UPDRS II, and Self-Assessment Parkinson's Disease Disability Scale (SPDDS). These measures were assessed at admission (T0) and discharge (T1). Results Based on the Hoehn and Yahr scale (H&Y), patients were divided into two groups: 262 subjects in H&Y stage <3 (early-stage PD patients) and 220 in H&Y stage ≥3 (medium-advanced stage PD patients). As expected, at baseline, all measures were worse in higher H&Y stages. After treatment, both groups experienced significant improvements in all outcomes. Significant differences between early-stage and medium-advanced stage PD patients were observed only for the changes in UPDRS II, with a better improvement in patients in H&Y stage ≥3. Conclusions We showed that PD patients who underwent a rehabilitation protocol including OT experienced improvements in finger dexterity and hand functionality. Our results underline the relevance of OT in improving autonomy and QoL in PD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is related to a dysfunction of central nervous system that most frequently appears at the age of three years old. There is no certain cure for this disorder; however, decreasing complications can produce positive life changes. Increasing physical activity is an appealing method for reducing behavioral disorders in ASD. Since Tai Chi Chuan training improves focus, attention to internal cues and balance, it seems to be an effective system for autistic children. MATERIALS & METHODS 18 children with ASD in the age range between 6-12 years old were divided randomly into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in a six-week program of Tai Chi Chuan consisting of 18 sessions, limited to 60 min each. To assess motor skills, an M-ABC test was used during pre- and post-assessment. In order to analyze the data, dependent and independent T tests were used (with significance level of 0.05). RESULTS Results showed a significant difference in the subscales of ball skills and balance performance (P < 0.05) and no significant difference in the manual agility scale (P > 0.05) between the two groups. CONCLUSION According to the results, it may be concluded that forms of Tai Chi Chuan improve balance and motion coordination. Moreover, this training consists of slow motion workouts with strongly focused attention, which may lead to developed control of body motions with harmony and discipline. Therefore, Tai Chi Chuan training seems to be a helpful therapeutic program to reduce motor limitations, and these benefits can be transferred to daily life in autistic children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of outpatient multidisciplinary therapy, compared to usual care, on measures of physical function and muscle strength in patients with manifest Huntington's disease (HD). METHODS Twenty-two patients with clinically verified HD were randomized to receive 36 weeks of outpatient multidisciplinary therapy or usual care. Outpatient multidisciplinary therapy comprised 9 months of supervised exercise, cognitive therapy and self-directed home-based exercise. Usual care consisted of standard medical care. Patients were assessed at 0 and 36 weeks by blinded assessors. The primary outcome was changed in mobility as measured by the 10-m Timed Walk Test. Secondary outcome measures included changes in manual dexterity (Timed Nut and Bolt Test), balance (Berg Balance Scale), cardiorespiratory endurance (6-Minute Walk Test) and upper and lower extremity muscle strength (isokinetic and isometric muscle strength and 10 Repetition Sit-to-Stand Tests). RESULTS Patients receiving outpatient multidisciplinary therapy demonstrated significantly enhanced manual dexterity (P < 0.05) and lower extremity muscle strength (P < 0.05) than patients receiving usual care. No significant differences in mobility, balance, cardiorespiratory endurance and upper extremity strength outcomes were observed between groups after the intervention period. There were no adverse events associated with multidisciplinary therapy. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that outpatient multidisciplinary therapy has positive effects on manual dexterity and muscle strength, but no meaningful effects on mobility, balance, cardiorespiratory endurance and upper extremity muscle strength in patients with HD. Larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with Parkinson's disease exhibit disturbed manual dexterity. This impairment leads to difficulties in activities of daily living, such as buttoning a shirt or hand-writing. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a home-based dexterity program on fine motor skills in a single-blinded, randomized controlled trial, in patients with Parkinson's disease. METHODS One hundred and three patients with Parkinson's disease (aged between 48 and 80 years, Hoehn & Yahr stage I-IV) were randomized to either a home-based dexterity program (HOMEDEXT) or Thera-band program. All patients trained over a period of 4 weeks, 5 times/week, 30 min for each session. A baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up assessment (12 weeks later, time period without intervention) were done. The primary outcome measure was dexterity as measured with the Nine Hole peg test (9-HPT). Secondary outcome measures included strength, motor parkinsonian symptoms, dexterity-related activities of daily living (ADL) and Health-related Quality of Life (HrQoL). RESULTS There was a significant difference in favor of the HOMEDEXT group as compared to the Thera-band group on the primary outcome 9-HPT (p = 0.006) and dexterity-related ADL (p = 0.02) at post intervention. No significant differences were found for the other outcomes, nor at follow-up. CONCLUSION This is the first randomized controlled trial showing that an intensive, task specific home-based dexterity program significantly improved fine motor skills in Parkinson's disease. The effect generalized to dexterity-related ADL functions. As these improvements did not sustain, the finding suggest that continuous training is required to maintain the benefit.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of strength training, performed against a different resistance from body weight, in improving motor and nonmotor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The following electronic databases were searched: PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, and Web of Science. The review was conducted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA statement. Thirteen high-quality randomized controlled trials were included. Strength training performed against external resistance is well tolerated and appears to be a suitable physical activity to improve both physical parameters and quality of life parameters of PD subjects. However, although the study intervention included strength training, only a few selected studies assessed the improvement of muscle strength. Despite the encouraging results, it is difficult to establish a correlation between strength training and the improvements made. Our review highlights the lack of common intent in terms of study design and the presence of different primary and secondary outcomes. Accordingly, further studies are needed to support the beneficial effects of different types of strength training in PD subjects and to underline the superiority of strength training in PD patients with respect to other training.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is traditionally classified as a movement disorder because patients mainly complain about motor symptoms. Recently, non-motor symptoms of PD have been recognized by clinicians and scientists as early signs of PD, and they are detrimental factors in the quality of life in advanced PD patients. It is crucial to comprehensively understand the essence of behavioral assessments, from the simplest measurement of certain symptoms to complex neuropsychological tasks. We have recently reviewed behavioral assessments in PD research with animal models (Asakawa et al., 2016). As a companion volume, this article will systematically review the behavioral assessments of motor and non-motor PD symptoms of human patients in current research. The major aims of this article are: (1) promoting a comparative understanding of various behavioral assessments in terms of the principle and measuring indexes; (2) addressing the major strengths and weaknesses of these behavioral assessments for a better selection of tasks/tests in order to avoid biased conclusions due to inappropriate assessments; and (3) presenting new concepts regarding the development of wearable devices and mobile internet in future assessments. In conclusion we emphasize the importance of improving the assessments for non-motor symptoms because of their complex and unique mechanisms in human PD brains.
