Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent among older patients and is frequently associated with cognitive decline and a reduced quality of life. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques show promise for treating MDD, but their comparative efficacy and safety older populations remain unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and cognitive effects of various NIBS techniques in treating MDD in older patients. METHODS We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science core databases from inception to March 2024. Seventeen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. RESULTS Surfaces under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values were used to rank the interventions. The SUCRA rankings for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) outcomes indicated that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) (89.0 %) had the highest efficacy, followed by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (68.7 %). rTMS demonstrated significantly superior efficacy compared with bilateral electroconvulsive therapy (BL ECT) and right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (RUL ECT). Theta burst stimulation (TBS) had the highest response rate (69.6 %), followed by rTMS (61.8 %). Based on the Mini-Mental State Examination, rTMS (86.4 %) ranked the highest, with RUL ECT showing significantly better outcomes than BL ECT. CONCLUSION NIBS, particularly rTMS and TBS, may offer effective treatment options for older patients with MDD. Further research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods is required to validate these findings and inform clinical practice.

Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has, as a conventional treatment, pharmacological therapy with selective monoamine reuptake inhibitors. However, the medication does not always have a rapid action for exacerbated cases, and moreover, it is estimated that 15 to 30% of patients do not respond effectively to conventional treatment, leading to 'treatment-resistant depressive mood disorder' (TRD). Thus, it is necessary to search for new therapeutic methods for exacerbated and resistant cases. The objective of the study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of nitrous oxide (N2O) in patients with MDD and TRD. The study was characterized as a systematic review of randomized clinical trials. Search strategy was developed using the keywords "nitrous oxide," "treatment-resistant depression," "Depression disorder," and their synonyms, searched in the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, and American Psychological Association. Four articles were included in the systematic review, with two of them being utilized for the meta-analysis, which comprised a total of 23 patients with MDD and 86 with TRD. A standardized mean difference (SMD) for the HDRS score at 24 h of -2.36 was found, with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of -3.37 to -1.34 (p < 0.0001; I2 = 46%). For the evaluation of the score after one week, an SMD of -0.60, 95% CI of -1.13 to -0.07 (p = 0.03; I2 = 0%) was found. In conclusion, N2O has a rapid action for managing decompensated patients, with a potential therapeutic effect for TRD. However, more studies needed to determine N2O's effectiveness duration.

Abstract
This is a review of the literature on the main neuromodulation techniques, focusing on the possibility of introducing sensory threshold ULFTENS into them. Electro neuromodulation techniques have been in use for many years as promising methods of therapy for cognitive and emotional disorders. One of the most widely used forms of stimulation for orofacial pain is transcutaneous trigeminal stimulation on three levels: supraorbital area, dorsal surface of the tongue, and anterior skin area of the tragus. The purpose of this review is to trigger interest on using dental ULFTENS as an additional trigeminal neurostimulation and neuromodulation technique in the context of TMD. In particular, we point out the possibility of using ULFTENS at a lower activation level than that required to trigger a muscle contraction that is capable of triggering effects at the level of the autonomic nervous system, with extreme ease of execution and few side effects.

Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious mood disorder and leading cause of disability. Despite treatment advances, approximately 30% of individuals with MDD do not achieve adequate clinical response. Better understanding the biological mechanism(s) underlying clinical response to specific psychopharmacological interventions may help fine tune treatments in order to further modulate their underlying mechanisms of action. However, little is known regarding the effect of non-pharmacological treatments (NPTs) on candidate molecular biomarker levels in MDD. This review aims to identify molecular biomarkers that may elucidate NPT response for MDD. Methods We performed a systematic review and a multilevel linear mixed-effects meta-analyses, and a meta-regression. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO in October 2020 and July 2021. Results From 1387 retrieved articles, 17 and six studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analyses, respectively. Although there was little consensus associating molecular biomarker levels with symptomology and/or treatment response, brain metabolites accessed via molecular biomarker-focused neuroimaging techniques may provide promising information on whether an individual with MDD would respond positively to NPTs. Furthermore, non-invasive brain stimulation interventions significantly increased the expression of neurotrophic factors (NTFs) compared to sham/placebo, regardless of add-on pharmacological treatment. Conclusions NTFs are candidate biomarkers to fine-tune NIBS for MDD treatment.
