Adsorption and immobilization of actinides using novel SiO2–ZrO2-calcium alginate aerogels from high level liquid waste

Highly efficient removal of strontium from contaminated wastewater by a porous zirconium phosphate material

Effective and efficient disposal of radioactive pollution has been crucial for responding to unexpected nuclear accidents and guaranteeing the sustainable development of nuclear energy. In this study, a kind of porous zirconium phosphate was synthesized with a sol-gel process followed by a post-synthesis modification to remove the radioactive Sr²⁺ from wastewater. The prepared materials were characterized by different technologies including FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS, and then the adsorption performance was evaluated in batch and column modes. Experimental results suggested that the porous zirconium phosphate adsorbent was successfully prepared with Na⁺ dispersed in the channels for exchange. It inherited the excellent properties of zirconium dioxide aerogel and exhibited mesoporous structure and large specific surface area. Compared with traditional zirconium phosphate, the adsorption kinetics and the adsorption capacity were improved simultaneously. Especially, it showed excellent selectivity towards Sr²⁺ among different cations, and even could remove the low-level Sr²⁺ from natural seawater efficiently, which powerfully demonstrated that the prepared material could be applied in the treatment of practical wastewater. Spectra studies uncovered that the adsorption activities were dominated by the ion exchange mechanism between external Sr²⁺ and interlaminar Na⁺ or H⁺. In conclusion, this paper not only reports a novel synthesis strategy for the acquisition of porous zirconium phosphate, but also presents a promising adsorbent for the Sr²⁺ removal.

Environmental Remediation with Functional Aerogels and Xerogels

Several different types of aerogels and xerogels are demonstrated as effective sorbents for the capture and/or immobilization of radionuclides and other contaminants in gaseous form [e.g., Hg(g), I2(g), Xe, Kr] as well as ionic form (e.g., Cd2+, Ce4+, Cs+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, I-, IO3 -, Kr, Pb2+, Rb+, Sr2+, 99Tc7+, U6+, Zn2+). These sorbents have unique properties, which include high specific surface areas, high pore volumes, a range of pore sizes, and functionalities that provide methods for binding radionuclides and other contaminants, generally through physisorption, chemisorption, or a combination thereof. This combination of properties and functionalities makes these types of materials ideal for use as sorbents for capturing radionuclides. The primary base materials that will be discussed in this paper include Ag0-functionalized silica aerogels, Ag+-impregnated aluminosilicate aerogels, Ag0-functionalized aluminosilicate aerogels, metal-impregnated (non-Ag) aluminosilicate aerogels and xerogels, sulfide-based aerogels, and carbon-based aerogel composites. For the capture of I2(g), the materials reported herein show some of the highest iodine loadings ever reported for inorganic sorbents. For the capture of ionic species, these materials also show promise as next-generation materials for active radionuclide remediation. This progress report describes materials fabrication, general properties, and environmental remediation applications.

Titanium Pyrophosphate for Removal of Trivalent Heavy Metals and Actinides Simulated by Retention of Europium

This work addresses the synthesis of titanium pyrophosphate, as well as the characterization and evaluation of the sorption process of europium, for removal of trivalent heavy metals and actinides simulate. The evaluation of the surface properties of titanium pyrophosphate was carried out determining the surface roughness and surface acidity constants. The values obtained from the determination of the surface roughness of the synthesized solid indicate that the surface of the material presents itself as slightly smooth. The FITEQL program was used to fit the experimental titration curves to obtain the surface acidity constants: log⁡K⁺ = 3.59 ± 0.06 and log⁡K^- = -3.90 ± 0.05. The results of sorption kinetics evidenced that the pseudo-order model explains the retention process of europium, in which the initial sorption velocity was 8.3 × 10^-4 mg g^-1 min^-1 and kinetic constant was 1.8 × 10^-3g mg min^-1. The maximum sorption capacity was 0.6 mg g^-1. The results obtained from sorption edge showed the existence of two bidentate complexes on the surface.

Improvingthecatalytic properties and stability of immobilized γ-glutamyltranspeptidase by post-immobilization with PharmalyteMT 8-10.5

γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) is a dimeric protein that specifically catalyzes the transfer of γ-glutamyl in the optimum pH range of 8.5-9.0, but has poor in vitro stability under the alkaline conditions. In the present work, GGT was immobilized on a mesoporoustitania oxide whisker (MTWs) carrier to afford MTWs-GGT that was further modified with Pharmalyte^MT (Phar) 8.0-10.5 to yield MTWs-GGT-Phar. Phar absorbed on MTWs-GGT to form a buffering layer with an isoelectric point of ∼9.2 that isolated the immobilized enzyme from the liquid bulk and significantly in proved the pH tolerance and stability of the immobilized GGT. The MTWs-GGT-Phar exhibited a stable enzyme activity in the pH range of 6.0-11.0 and an optimum temperature 10°C higher than GGT. Its pH stability at pH 11.0 and thermal stability at 50°C were respectively 23.7 times and 19.4 times higher than those of GGT. In addition, the affinity constant of MTWs-GGT-Phar towards GpNA (K_m) was 0.597mM, slightly lower than that of free GGT, indicating that Phar had a protective effect on the structure of GGT.

Preparation of magnetic porous NiFe2O4/SiO2 composite xerogels for potential application in adsorption of Ce(iv) ions from aqueous solution

In this work, a novel magnetic porous adsorbent was prepared via a sol–gel method for the removal of Ce(iv) from aqueous solution.
