APERTRACK: A particle-tracking model to simulate radionuclide transport in the Arabian/Persian Gulf

Origin and pathway of a subsurface maximum of 137Cs detected in the winter of 2012 after the Fukushima accident

This study investigates the dispersion behavior of 137Cs and evaluates its origin (atmospheric deposition or direct ocean release) from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident using a Lagrangian particle tracking model. The ocean circulation fields based on the Modular Ocean Model Version 5 (MOM5) were adopted for the simulation. The MOM5 results represented the formation and migration of subtropical mode water (STMW) comparable with observations and reanalysis data. Particularly, anticyclonic eddies south of the Kuroshio extension promoted surface mixing over 300 m in the cooling season. The particle tracking simulation reproduced well the maximum subsurface activity between 142 and 146°E, where STMW is deep owing to anticyclonic eddies, compared to the activity found via measurements conducted around 149°E in the winter of 2012. It also demonstrated that the 137Cs of the tropical and subtropical regions (10-35°N, 142-146°E) in the winter of 2012 almost entirely originated from atmospheric deposition.

Sediments as sinks and sources of marine radionuclides: Implications for their use as ocean tracers

A Lagrangian transport model for the North Atlantic has been applied to simulate the historical releases of 137Cs, 129I and 236U from the European nuclear fuel reprocessing plants. Advection by currents, mixing and decay are included, as radionuclide interactions between water, sediments and suspended matter. The model was validated comparing predictions with measured radionuclide concentrations in water and sediments in several areas. 129I and 236U signals entering the Arctic Ocean have been compared with the input terms: the 236U signal is distorted, but the 129I signal preserves its shape. In the first moments after the releases, the sediments act as sinks for 236U, but not significantly for 129I and ultimately they become sources of 236U to the open sea. This results in a weaker correlation between input and output signals for 236U than for 129I. The same effects as for 236U have been found for 137Cs signal into the Arctic.

Viewpoint on the Integration of Geochemical Processes into Tracer Transport Models for the Marine Environment

Two types of models are used to describe the interactions of tracers dissolved in the ocean with marine sediments: equilibrium and dynamic models. A brief description of these models is given in this opinion paper, and some examples are presented to show that preference should be given to the dynamic descriptions in modern pollutant transport models to be used in emergencies as well as in the case of chronic tracer releases to the sea.
