First characterization of an uranium(III) complex with a carbonyl-containing ligand: Syntheses and X-ray crystal structures of the homoleptic dimethylformamide complexes [M(dmf)n]I3 (M=Ce, Nd and n=8; M=La, Ce, U and n=9)

Syntheses and crystal structures of solvate complexes of alkaline earth and lanthanoid metal iodides with N,N-dimethylformamide

The solvate complexes that can be obtained by either dissolving metal iodides in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) or by synthesising them in DMF have the general composition [M(DMF) x ]I y . DMF shows to behave as simple monodentate ligand with low sterical impact, so that x in the composition follows the radius of M y+. We present here the crystal structures of the alkaline earth and lanthanoid metal iodide complexes [Mg(DMF)6]I2, [Ca(DMF)6]I2, [Sr(DMF)7]I2, [Ba(DMF)8]I2, [La(DMF)9]I3, [Ln(DMF)8]I3 (isotypic series for Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Gd, Er, Yb and Lu) and for the tris-triiodide complex salt [Sc(DMF)6](I3)3. Their different crystal structure types can be compared on the basis of the packing topologies of the nearly spherical cationic entities which show simple sphere packing motifs.

Oxidation of uranium(iv) thiocyanate complexes: cation–cation interactions in mixed-valent uranium coordination chains

Oxidation of Cs₄[U(NCS)₈] in different solvents results in two mixed-valent uranium compounds. Spectroscopic, magnetic and computational data support a unique [U^IVU^VU^IV][U^VI] oxidation state assignment in [U(DMF)₈(μ-O)U(NCS)₅(μ-O)U(DMF)₇(NCS)][UO₂(NCS)₅].

Solvation and association of 3:1 electrolytes in N,N-dimethylformamide

A detailed study has been made of the solvation and ion association of the trifluoromethanesulfonate (Tf(-)) salts of aluminum(III), scandium(III), and lanthanum(III) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 25 °C using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy over the frequency range of 0.1 ≲ ν/GHz ≤ 89. The spectra of all solutions exhibited either two (for ScTf3 and LaTf3) or three (for AlTf3) relaxation processes, a dominant mode centered at ∼15 GHz due to the solvent and one or (for AlTf3 solutions) two solute-related processes at lower frequencies (νmax ≲ 2 GHz). Effective solvation numbers, Zib, calculated from the solvent relaxation process indicated that all three cations were strongly solvated by DMF with Zib(0) values at infinite dilution in the order (Al(3+) ≈ Sc(3+) ≈ 10) < (La(3+) ≈ 13), consistent with at least partial formation of a second solvation shell around each cation. One solute-related mode for each set of salt solutions was assigned to the rotational diffusion of solvent-shared ion pairs (SIPs) of 1:1 stoicheometry; the additional slower process for AlTf3 solutions in DMF was attributed to the presence of double-solvent-separated IPs. The overall association constants at infinite dilution for the 1:1 IPs, KA°(MTf(2+)), were significant, but as expected from Debye-Hückel considerations, the KA values decreased rapidly with increasing solute concentration.

Crystal-to-crystal transformations in heterometallic yttrium(III)-copper(I) iodide derivatives in a confined solvent-free environment: influence of solvated yttrium cations on the nuclearity and dimensionality of iodocuprate clusters

The solvated yttrium iodide precursors [Y(L)(8)]I(3) (L = DMSO or DMF), prepared in situ by stirring YI(3)(Pr(i)OH)(4) in DMSO or DMF, react with CuI in the presence of NH(4)I to give ionic hetero-metallic species [Y(DMSO)(8)][Cu(2)(mu-I)I(4)] (1) and [Y(DMF)(8)][Cu(4)(mu(3)-I)(2)(mu-I)(3)I(2)] (2) in excellent yields. Re-crystallization of 1 from DMF afforded the mixed-solvate complex [Y(DMSO)(6)(DMF)(2)][CuI(3)][I] (3). Compounds 2 and 3 undergo unique crystal-to-crystal transformation via progressive substitution of DMF by water molecules in a confined, solvent-free environment. Thus, crystals of 3 transform into [Y(DMSO)(6)(H(2)O)(2)][CuI(3)][I] (4), whereas a discrete ion-pair assembly of 2 is first converted into a 1-D zig-zag structure [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(2)](3+)[Cu(7)(mu(4)-I)(3)(mu(3)-I)(2)(mu-I)(4)(I)](1infinity)(3-) (5) and finally into a 2-D sheet containing mixed-valent copper atoms, [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(3)](3+)[Cu(I)(7)Cu(II)(2)(mu(3)-I)(8)(mu-I)(6)](2infinity)(3-) (6). The bi- and tetrafurcate H-bonding between water ligands on yttrium and iodides of the Cu-I cluster plays a pivotal role in the evolution of structures 4-6. Formation of a wide range of iodocuprate structures in 1-6, from discrete mono-, di- or tetranuclear units to one- and two-dimensional extended arrays, reflects the influence of solvated yttrium cations on the nuclearity and dimensionality of Cu-I clusters. TG-DTA-MS studies and DFT calculations for these complexes have also been carried out in order to determine their thermal stability and have insight about aforesaid transformations.

From discrete [Y(DMF)8][Cu4(µ3-I)2(µ-I)3I2] ion pairs to extended [Y(DMF)6(H2O)2][Cu7(µ4-I)3(µ3-I)2(µ-I)4(I)]1∞and [Y(DMF)6(H2O)3][CuI7CuII2(µ3-I)8(µ-I)6]2∞arrays by H-bond templating in a confined solvent-free environment

An ionic heterometallic species [Y(DMF)(8)][Cu(4)(micro(3)-I)(2)(micro-I)(3)I(2)](1) was isolated from a solution of CuI, NH(4)I and YI(3)(Pr(i)OH)(4) in DMF-isopropoxyethanol, and was converted in a confined environment by progressive substitution of the DMF ligands with water molecules first into a 1D zig-zag structure [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(2)][Cu(7)(micro(4)-I)(3)(micro(3)-I)(2)(micro-I)(4)(I)](1infinity)(2) and finally into a 2D sheet [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(3)][Cu(I)(7)Cu(II)(2)(micro(3)-I)(8)(micro-I)(6)](2infinity)(3) by H-bond templating.
