Structure and property of unsymmetrical binuclear [(3,5-dimethylpyrazole)2Pd2(μ-3,5-dimethylpyrazolate)2(2,6-dipicolinate)] and mononuclear [Na2(H2O)4Pd(2,6-dipicolinate)2] complexes

From Simple Palladium(II) Monomers to 2D Heterometallic Sodium-Palladium(II) Coordination Networks with 2-Halonicotinates

The 2D heterometallic sodium-palladium(II) coordination polymers with 2-halonicotinates [2-chloropyridine-3-carboxylate (2-chloronicotinate), 2-Clnic- and 2-bromopyridine-3-carboxylate (2-bromonicotinate), 2-Brnic-], {[Na2(H2O)2(μ-H2O)4PdCl2(μ-2-Clnic-N:O')2]}n (1), and {[Na2(H2O)2(μ-H2O)4PdBr2(μ-2-Brnic-N:O')2]·2H2O}n (2) were prepared in aqueous solutions under the presence of NaHCO3, while palladium(II) monomers with the neutral 2-chloronicotinic and 2-bromonicotinic acid ligands, [PdCl2(2-ClnicH-N)2]·2DMF (3) and [PdCl2(2-BrnicH-N)2]·2DMF (4), were prepared in DMF/water mixtures (DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide). The zigzag chains of water-bridged sodium ions are in turn bridged by [PdCl2(2-Clnic)2]2- moieties in 1 or by [PdBr2(2-Brnic)2]2- moieties in 2, leading to the formation of the infinite 2D coordination networks of 1 or 2. The DFT calculations showed the halosubstituents type (Cl vs Br) does not have an influence on the formation of either trans or cis isomers. The trans isomers were found in all reported compounds; being more stable for about 10 to 15 kJ mol-1. The 2D coordination networks 1 and 2 are more stabilized by the formation of Na-Ocarboxylate bonds, comparing to the stabilization of palladium(II) monomers 3 and 4 by hydrogen-bonding with DMF molecules. The difference in DFT calculated energy stabilization for 1 and 2 is ascribed to the type of halosubstituents and to the presence/absence of lattice water molecules in 1 and 2. The compounds show no antibacterial activity toward reference strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and no antiproliferative activity toward bladder (T24) and lung (A549) cancer cell lines.

Antimicrobial activity of mono- and polynuclear platinum and palladium complexes

Introduction. Infectious diseases remain a serious threat to humanity worldwide as bacterial pathogens grow more diverse. Bacteria, fungi, and parasites develop resistance to clinically approved antimicrobials, which reduces the efficacy of available drugs and treatment measures. As a result, there is an ever growing demand for new highly effective pharmaceuticals. This review describes mono- and polynuclear platinum and palladium complexes with antimicrobial properties. We compared several groups of antibacterial agents: antibiotics, antioxidant biologically active substances, antimicrobial nanoparticles, nanocomposite materials, biopolymers, micellar systems, and plant extracts. Study objects and methods. The review covered relevant articles published in Web of Science, Scopus, and Russian Science Citation Index for the last decade. The list of descriptors included such terms as mononuclear and binuclear complexes of platinum, palladium, and antimicrobial activity. Results and discussion. Chelates of platinum, palladium, silver, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, cobalt, and nickel are popular therapeutic agents. Their antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms can be enhanced by increasing their bioavailability. Metalbased drugs facilitate the transport of organic ligands towards the bacterial cell. The nature of the ligand and its coordination change the thermodynamic stability, kinetic lability, and lipophilic properties of the complex, as well as the reactivity of the central atom. Polynuclear platinum and palladium complexes contain two or more bound metal (coordinate) centers. Covalent bonding with bacterial DNA enables them to form a type of DNA adducts, which is completely different from that of mononuclear complexes. Conclusion. Metal-based drugs with functional monodentate ligands exhibit a greater antimicrobial effect compared to free ligands. Poly- and heteronuclear complexes can increase the number of active centers that block the action of bacterial cells. When combined with other antibacterial agents, they provide a synergistic effect, which makes them a promising subject of further research.

Temperature and pressure variations of d-d luminescence band maxima of bis(pyridylalkenolato)palladium(II) complexes with different ligand substituents: opposite-signed trends

Luminescence spectra of two d(8)-configured bis(pyridylalkenolato)palladium(ii) complexes, [Pd{PyCHC(C3F7)O}2] and [Pd{PyCHC(CH3)O}2], are presented at variable temperature and pressure. Bands are assigned as d-d transitions. The heptafluoropropyl and methyl substituents on the ligands have different steric demands, influencing luminescence spectra. Broad bands with maxima at approximately 12 700 cm(-1) (790 nm) for ligands with heptafluoropropyl substituents and 12,100 cm(-1) (830 nm) for ligands with methyl substituents and widths of approximately 2100 cm(-1) for both complexes are observed at 80 K. Quenching of the luminescence is observed as temperature increases. The maxima of [Pd{PyCHC(C3F7)O}2] show a shift of -0.9 ± 0.1 cm(-1) K(-1) due to broadening of the spectra to lower energy. The luminescence maxima of [Pd{PyCHC(CH3)O}2] shift in the opposite direction by +7.2 ± 0.7 cm(-1) K(-1). Shifts with different signs are also obtained from variable-pressure luminescence spectra, with values of +13 ± 2 cm(-1) kbar(-1) and -15 ± 7 cm(-1) kbar(-1) for [Pd{PyCHC(C3F7)O}2] and [Pd{PyCHC(CH3)O}2], respectively. The pressure-induced decrease is unusual and likely caused by intermolecular interactions involving the palladium(ii) center and a vinylic proton of a neighboring complex.
