Abstract
Single crystal X-ray structural characterisations are reported for adducts of the form [(L-O)Eu(O,O′-dpm)3] obtained by the crystallisation of tris(dipivaloylmethanato)europium(iii) (dpm=[HC(C(tBu).CO)2]−) from an array of dipolar aprotic oxygen-donor solvents L (L=N-methylpyrrolidinone (nmp), trimethylphosphate, (MeO)3PO, (tmp), hexamethylphosphoramide (hmpa), dimethylacetamide (dma), dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso), and the bidentate octamethylpyrophosphoramide (ompa). In all adducts, the resulting arrays contain seven-coordinate metal atoms, which adopt two different isomeric forms of the mono-capped trigonal prismatic stereochemistry, the L=dma and dmso adducts corresponding to one type, nmp and tmp the other. The adduct formed with ompa behaves as a pair of discrete metal environments bridged by the O-ompa-O′ ligand, thus; [(dpm-O,O′)3Eu(O-ompa-O′)Eu(O,O′-dpm)3], and is found in two forms, one in which both Eu environments is of the tmp type, the other of the dmso/dma type. In the hmpa adduct, the asymmetric unit of the structure is a disordered composite of both types. In none of the adducts is there any further solvation beyond coordination of a single L.

Abstract
Two dinuclear dysprosium complexes with the Dy(iii) ions bridged by the neutral bipyrimidine (BPYM) ligand were synthesized and magnetically characterized. They crystallized in a monoclinic and triclinic crystal system, respectively, with almost the same structural core, only differing in the lattice solvent molecules. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements revealed that they exhibit significant slow relaxation of magnetization until 25 K in the absence of a dc field. The single and double relaxation processes were assigned to one and two types of Dy(iii) environments in the two dimmers, respectively, with barriers of 266 and 345 K under zero field conditions. The magnetic hysteresis loops of 1 and 2 were both observed up to 2.5 K.

Abstract
A series of 2,2'-bipyrimidine-bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes with the general formula [Ln(tmhd)3]2bpm (tmhd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate, bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine, Ln = Gd(III), 1; Tb(III), 2; Dy(III), 3; Ho(III), 4 and Er(III), 5) has been synthesized and characterized. Sublimation of [Tb(tmhd)3]2bpm onto a Au(111) surface leads to the formation of a homogeneous film with hexagonal pattern, which was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The bulk magnetic properties of all complexes have been studied comprehensively. The dynamic magnetic behavior of the Dy(III) and Er(III) compounds clearly exhibits single molecule magnet (SMM) characteristics with an energy barrier of 97 and 25 K, respectively. Moreover, micro-SQUID measurements on single crystals confirm their SMM behavior with the presence of hysteresis loops.

Abstract
Seven new tris(β-diketonear-nate)ytterbium(III) complexes with the general formula [Yb(β-diketonate)3(5NO2phen)] (where the β-diketone is either 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione, 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-furyl)-1,3-butanedione, 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,4-pentanedione, 1,1,1-trifluoro-5,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexanedione, 1,1,1,5,5,6,6,7,7,7-decafluoro-2,4-heptanedione, 2,4-hexanedione or 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-heptanedione, and 5NO2phen = 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray structures have been determined for three fluorinated complexes and ground state geometries of the other four complexes have been predicted using the Sparkle/PM6 model. These experimental structures and those designed by semi-empirical models reveal octacoordination around the Yb(3+) ion. Photoluminescence studies and lifetime measurements show that the increase in the fluorinated β-diketonate chain length is associated with a decrease in Yb(3+) luminescence intensity of the (2)F5/2→(2)F7/2 transition at around 980 nm and the (2)F5/2 excited state lifetime, while the ligand lifetime value remains almost unaffected. Finally, fluorination of the ligands is only advised when the complexes are to be used for co-doping with isostructural Er(3+) complexes for optical amplifiers, since it leads to a slight decrease in luminescence intensity for the same β-diketonate chain length.

Abstract
This paper reviews the recent investigations undertaken on the use of 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpm) as a ligand for designing molecular complexes as well as polymeric lanthanide materials. A special emphasis is put on the ability of this polydentate neutral ligand to yield compounds of various dimensionalities, to act as a connector between these large ions, and influence their emissive and magnetic properties. This ligand can adopt a terminal or a bridging coordination mode with lanthanide ions, thus generating a wealth of frameworks of various topologies with the 4f elements. The main focus of this review is to show the originality brought by bpm in lanthanide structural chemistry and solid-state photophysics and magnetism.
