Synthesis and properties of new tetrachlorocobaltate (II) and tetrachloromanganate (II) anion salts with dicationic counterions

Clarifying the complex chemistry of cobalt(II) thiocyanate-based tests for cocaine using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques

Cobalt(II) thiocyanate-based tests are routinely used to screen cocaine products, with the formation of a blue species interpreted as a positive response. An array of other organic bases has been identified as false positives - including well-documented cocaine product adulterant lidocaine and its salt. False positives prompt continued test development, though improvements are hindered by unresolved product structures and reaction pathways. Toward greater clarity, cobalt(II) thiocyanate reactions with cocaine hydrochloride, along with lidocaine and its salt, were investigated using multiple analytical techniques. Reactions involving cocaine hydrochloride yielded glassy, amorphous blue material while reactions of lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate produced larger, needle-like crystals whose structure was determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction to be an ion pair (Hlidocaine+ )2 ([Co(SCN)4 ]2- )·H2 O. While the blue precipitate isolated from reactions involving cocaine hydrochloride was unsuitable for crystallographic structure determination, comparative ultraviolet-visible, attenuated total reflectance infrared, and Raman spectroscopic analysis - along with elemental analysis - supports that this solid is comprised of a comparable ion pair (Hcocaine+ )2 [Co(SCN)4 ]2- . Pink crystals isolated from lidocaine reaction vessels were identified as coordination compounds cis-[CoL2 (SCN)2 ] and trans-[CoL2 (SCN)2 ] where L = lidocaine, while pink crystals from both cocaine hydrochloride and lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate reaction vessels were the coordination polymer trans-[Co(H2 O)2 (SCN)2 ]·H2 O. The results presented herein enable reaction optimization to favor a desired product, whether ion pair or coordination species.

Enhanced stability and complex phase behaviour of organic-inorganic green-emitting ionic manganese halides

Light-emitting materials based on earth-abundant metals, such as manganese hold great promise as emitters for organic lighting devices. In order to apply such emitter materials and, in particular, to overcome the problem of self-quenching due to cross-relaxation, we investigated a series of tetrabromidomanganate ([MnBr₄]^2-) salts with bulky tetraalkylphosphonium counter cations [P_nnn]⁺, namely [P_nnnn]₂[MnBr₄] (n = 4 (1), 6 (2) and 8 (3)), which can be obtained by a straightforward reaction of the respective phosphonium bromide and MnBr₂. Variation of the cation size allows control of the properties of the resulting ionic materials. 1 and 3 qualify as ionic liquids (ILs), where 1 features a melting point of 68 °C, and 3 is liquid at room temperature and even at very low temperatures. Furthermore, 1 and 2 show the formation of higher-ordered thermotropic mesophases. For 1 a transition to a thermodynamically metastable smectic liquid crystalline phase can be observed at room temperature upon reheating from the metastable glassy state; 2 appears to form a plastic crystalline phase at ∼63 °C, which persists up to the melting point of 235 °C. The photoemission is greatly affected by phase behaviour and ion dynamics. A photoluminescence quantum yield of 61% could be achieved, by balancing the increase in Mn²⁺-Mn²⁺ separation and reducing self-quenching through increasingly large organic cations which leads to adverse increased vibrational quenching. Compared to analogous ammonium compounds, which have been promoted as ̈inorganic hybrid perovskites̈, the phosphonium salts show superior performance, with respect to photoluminescent quantum yield and thermal and air/humidity stability. As the presented compounds are not sensitive to the atmosphere, in particular moisture, and show strong visible electroluminescence in the green region of light, they are important emitter materials for use in organic light-emitting devices.

Low-Melting Manganese (II)-Based Ionic Liquids: Syntheses, Structures, Properties and Influence of Trace Impurities

The synthesis of more than 10 new magnetic ionic liquids with [MnX₄]^2- anions, X = Cl, NCS, NCO, is presented. Detailed structural information through single-crystal X-ray diffraction is given for (DMDIm)[Mn(NCS)₄], (BnEt₃N)₂[Mn(NCS)₄], and {(Ph₃P)₂N}₂[Mn(NCO₄)]·0.6H₂O, respectively. All compounds consist of discrete anions and cations with tetrahedrally coordinated Mn (II) atoms. They show paramagnetic behavior as expected for spin-only systems. Melting points are found for several systems below 100 °C classifying them as ionic liquids. Thermal properties are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The physicochemical properties of density, dynamic viscosity, electrolytic conductivity, and surface tension were measured temperature-dependent of selected samples. These properties are discussed in comparison to similar Co containing systems. An increasing amount of bromide impurity is found to affect the surface tension only up to 3.3%.

Synthesis and Properties of Magnetic Aryl-Imidazolium Ionic Liquids with Dual Brønsted/Lewis Acidity

A series of unique tunable aryl-imidazolium magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) with dual acidity that contain both Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites (abbreviated as B-L MILs) were synthesized and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Physical properties, such as thermal properties, magnetic susceptibility, and Brønsted and Lewis acidity, were measured. These properties were found to depend on the cation structure. These B-L MILs had good solubility in many organic solvents, good thermal stability, and low melting points, and exhibited magnet-like behavior. For these B-L MILs, the Brønsted acidity was measured using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and the Lewis acidity was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that B-L MILs with an electron-withdrawing group in the aryl-imidazolium moiety had higher Brønsted acidity, whereas those with an electron-donating group had higher Lewis acidity. This type of ionic liquid, with both Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites, is expected to be a useful solvent and catalyst for organic reactions.

Synthesis and investigation of physico-chemical properties of dicationic ionic liquids

A series of dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) including [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 were synthesized. Their thermal stability and melting points were analysed. It was found that dicationic ILs presented important implications in the design of homogeneous and heterogeneous system with water. A homogeneous system of dicationic ILs with water could be formed at a relatively high temperature and then a heterogeneous system was formed when the solution was cooled to a low temperature. The ILs recovered by altering the temperature were obtained in high percentage yields of [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.6%), [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.3%), [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 (98.0%) and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 (94.2%). On the other hand, [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 exhibited good solubility in acetonitrile and acetone. A homogeneous system could be achieved with imidazolium-based ILs with a relatively low amount of water and acetonitrile at room temperature. All of the properties of dicationic ILs have a strong correlation with the nature of dications, the linkage chain and the symmetry of dications. Dicationic ILs may provide a new opportunity for some specific applications in order to enable the effective separation and isolation of products.

Crystal structure of bis-(2-amino-5-chloro-pyridinium) tetra-chlorido-cobaltate(II)

In the structure of bis­(2-amino-5-chloro­pyridinium) tetra­chlorido­cobaltate(II), the essentially planar cations are connected through N—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds to the tetra­hedral anion.

The title salt, (C₅H₆ClN₂)₂[CoCl₄], was synthesized by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution at room temperature. The asymmetric unit consists of two essentially planar (C₅H₆ClN₂)⁺ cations [maximum deviations = 0.010 (3) and 0.014 (3) Å] that are nearly perpendicular to each other [dihedral angle = 84.12 (7)°]. They are bonded through N—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds to distorted [CoCl₄]²⁻ tetra­hedra, leading to the formation of undulating layers parallel to (100). The structure is isotypic with the Zn analogue [Kefi et. al (2011). Acta Cryst. E67, m355–m356.]
