Complexes of aluminium, gallium and indium trifluorides with neutral oxygen donor ligands: Synthesis, properties and reactions

Recent advances in synthesis of organometallic complexes of indium

The indium complexes are being used in many applications like catalysis, optoelectronics, sensors, solar cells, biochemistry, medicine, infrared (IR) mirrors and thin-film transistors (TFTs). In organometallic complexes of indium, it forms different types of complexes with single, double, triple and tetra linkages by coordinating with numerous elements like C, N, O and S and also with some other elements like Se and Ru. So, the present study comprises all the possible ways to synthesize the indium complexes by reacting with different organic ligands; most of them are N-heterocyclic carbenes, amines, amides and phenols. The commonly used solvents for these syntheses are tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, toluene, benzene, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. According to the nature of the ligands, indium complexes were reported at different temperatures and stirring time. Because of their unique characteristics, the organometallic chemistry of group 13 metal indium complexes remains a subject of continuing interest in synthetic chemistry as well as material science.

Tertiary Phosphine and Arsine Complexes of Phosphorus Pentafluoride: Synthesis, Properties, and Electronic Structures

The reaction of PMe₃ or PPh₃ with PF₅ in anhydrous CH₂Cl₂ or hexane forms the white, moisture-sensitive complexes [PF₅(PR₃)] (R = Me, Ph). Similar reactions involving the diphosphines o-C₆H₄(PR₂)₂ afford the complexes [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PR₂)₂}][PF₆]. The X-ray structures of [PF₅(PR₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}][PF₆] show pseudo-octahedral fluorophosphorus centers. Multinuclear NMR spectra (¹H, ¹⁹F{¹H}, ³¹P{¹H}) show that in solution in CH₂Cl₂/CD₂Cl₂ the structures determined crystallographically are the only species present for [PF₅(PMe₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}][PF₆] but that [PF₅(PPh₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PPh₂)₂}][PF₆] exhibit reversible dissociation of the phosphine at ambient temperatures, although exchange slows at low temperatures. The complex ¹⁹F{¹H} and ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectra have been analyzed, including those of the cation [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}]⁺, which is a second-order AA'XX'B₂M spin system. The unstable [PF₅(AsMe₃)], which decomposes in a few hours at ambient temperatures, has also been isolated and spectroscopically characterized; neither AsPh₃ nor SbEt₃ forms similar complexes. The electronic structures of the PF₅ complexes have been explored by DFT calculations. The DFT optimized geometries for [PF₅(PMe₃)], [PF₅(PPh₃)], and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}]⁺ are in good agreement with their respective crystal structure geometries. DFT calculations on the PF₅-L complexes reveal the P-L bond strength falls with L in the order PMe₃ > PPh₃ > AsMe₃, consistent with the experimentally observed stabilities, and in the PF₅-L complexes, electron transfer from L to PF₅ on forming these complexes also follows the order PMe₃ > PPh₃ ≈ AsMe₃.

Synthesis of 18 F-radiolabeled diphenyl gallium dithiosemicarbazone using a novel halogen exchange method and in vivo biodistribution

¹⁸ F-radiolabeled diphenyl gallium thiosemicarbazone was prepared by [¹⁸ F] fluoride exchange of a nitrato anion under mild conditions. The diphenyl gallium thiosemicarbazone chloride is easily prepared in gram quantities and can be used at room temperature in the presence of oxygen. The corresponding nitrate complex is prepared using silver nitrate in methanol solvent and can be stored under nitrogen for weeks before radiolabeling. The biodistribution of this new tracer was studied in mice using positron emission tomography (PET).

α-methylation and α-fluorination electronic effects on the regioselectivity of carbonyl groups of uracil by H and triel bonds in the interaction of U, T and 5FU with HCl and TrH3 (Tr = B, Al)

Quantum chemical calculations at the ωB97XD/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory have been executed to investigate the effect of substituents via hydrogen-bonded and triel-bonded complexes between uracil (U), thymine (T) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) with HCl for the former complexes, and with BH₃ and AlH₃ for the latter complexes. These calculations are supported by single-point energy calculations at MP2/6-311++G(d,p) and CCSD/6-31 + G(d,p) levels of theory, Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) and Molecular Electrostatic Potentials (MEPs) analyses, and global/local reactivity descriptors. The results reveal that triel-bonded complexes are strongly bounded than hydrogen-bonded ones, and Al-containing dimers stronger than B-containing ones. In addition, as the central triel atom grows in size, B-containing dimers (B-O triel bond) are accompanied by weak B-H⋯O unconventional H-bonds. According to local reactivity descriptors, the B-O triel bond is hard-hard interaction that indicates that the association is primarily charge controlled, while the Al-O triel bond is soft-soft interaction that is primarily orbital controlled. In both Hydrogen as well as triel-bonded complexes, the α-methylation slightly overestimates the binding strength of U, while the α-fluorination exerts the opposite role by underestimating the binding strength of U. In overall, the effect of substituents on the bond strength and thus on the regioselectivity is very small, suggesting a competition between the two carbonyl groups in terms of structures and binding energies.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Indium(III) Bis-Thiosemicarbazone Complexes: 18F Incorporation for PET Imaging

Several structurally related indium chlorido complexes of bis-thiosemicarbazones were prepared, starting from the appropriately substituted bis-thiosemicarbazones, using sodium methoxide in methanol. Detailed NMR studies were conducted to assign the structure including COSY, HSQC, and HMBC techniques. The structures of all indium complexes were solved using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The chlorido ligand was present at the apex of the square pyramidal coordination sphere in all indium complexes. In some complexes, an intermolecular hydrogen bond was present between the chlorine atom and an NH group. Three different indium chlorido complexes were converted into the corresponding fluorido-derivative by a simple halide exchange method using K18F. These novel complexes, containing the positron emitting isotope 18F, may have potential applications in positron emission tomography (PET).

Group 3 metal trihalide complexes with neutral N-donor ligands - exploring their affinity towards fluoride

Fluorination of [ScCl3(Me3-tacn)] (Me3-tacn = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and [ScCl3(BnMe2-tacn)] (BnMe2-tacn = 1,4-dimethyl-7-benzyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) by Cl/F exchange with 3 mol. equiv. of anhydrous [NMe4]F in CH3CN solution yields the corresponding [ScF3(R3-tacn)] (R3 = Me3 or BnMe2). These are the first examples of scandium fluoride complexes containing neutral co-ligands. The fluorination occurs stepwise, and using a deficit of [NMe4]F produced [ScF2Cl(Me3-tacn)]. Attempts to fluorinate [YCl3(Me3-tacn)], [YI3(Me3-tacn)], [LaCl3(Me3-tacn)(OH2)] or [MCl3(terpy)] (M = Sc, Y or La; terpy = 2,2':6'2''-terpyridyl) using a similar method were unsuccessful, due to the Cl/F exchange being accompanied by loss of the neutral ligand from the metal centre. Fluorination of [ScCl3(Me3-tacn)] or [ScCl3(terpy)] with Me3SnF was also successful. The products were identified as the very unusual heterobimetallic [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl] and [Sc(terpy)F(μ-F)2(SnMe3Cl)2], in which the Me3SnCl formed in the reaction behaves as a weak Lewis acid towards the scandium fluoride complex, linked by Sc-F-Sn bridges. [Sc(terpy)F(μ-F)2(SnMe3Cl)2] decomposes irreversibly in solution but, whilst multinuclear NMR data show that [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl] is dissociated into the [ScF3(Me3-tacn)] and Me3SnCl in CH3CN solution, the bimetallic complex reforms upon evaporation of the solvent. The new scandium fluoride complexes and the chloride precursors have been characterised by microanalysis, IR and multinuclear NMR (1H, 19F, 45Sc) spectroscopy as appropriate. X-ray crystal structures provide unambiguous evidence for the identities of [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl], [ScF2Cl(Me3-tacn)], [YI3(Me3-tacn)], [{YI2(Me3-tacn)}2(μ-O)], [ScCl3(terpy)], [YCl3(terpy)(OH2)], and [{La(terpy)(OH2)Cl2}2(μ-Cl)2]. Once formed, the [ScF3(R3-tacn)] complexes are stable in water and unaffected by a ten-fold excess of Cl- or MeCO2-, although they are immediately decomposed by excess F-. The potential use of [ScF3(R3-tacn)] type complexes as platforms for 18F PET (positron emission tomography) radiopharmaceuticals is briefly discussed. Attempts to use the Group 3 fluoride "hydrates", MF3·xH2O, as precursors were unsuccessful; no reaction with R3-tacn or terpy occurred either on reflux in CH3CN or under hydrothermal conditions (H2O, 180° C, 15 h). PXRD data showed that these "hydrates" actually contain the anhydrous metal trifluorides with small amounts of surface or interstitial water.

Hydride-Triel Bonds

In this article, we present the results of our comprehensive studies of 72 dimers of the R3XXH⋯YR3Y type (X = Si, Ge; Y = B, Al, Ga; R^X  = H, Cl, Me; R^Y  = H, F, Cl, Me) and featuring hydride-triel bonds (i.e., charge-inverted hydrogen bonds). Influence of X and Y atoms as well as R^X and R^Y substituents on various properties of these dimers is investigated in detail. In particular the strength of the H⋯Y hydride-triel bonds is paid a close attention and it is shown that hydride-triel bonds can be strong enough to considerably determine structure and properties of molecular systems. In addition, properties of the investigated dimers are largely governed by the charge transfer from the Lewis base to the Lewis acid, which is particularly important if more bulky and polarizable R^Y and Y atoms are present in the YR3Y molecule. Several excellent linear (R² close to 1) and exponential correlations between pairs of diverse parameters are presented. Few instances are discussed where somewhat unexpected bond paths exist between two atoms featuring partial negative charges (e.g., between hydride hydrogen and halogen and between lateral sides of two halogens) showing that in some cases a bond path prefers to link two closely spaced electron-rich atoms instead of two atoms that are expected to form a bond. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A gel aging effect in the synthesis of open-framework gallium phosphates: structure solution and solid-state NMR of a large-pore, open-framework material

The templated zeolite-analogue GaPO-34 (CHA structure type) crystallises from a gel precursor Ga2O3 : 2H3PO4 : 1HF : 1.7SDA : 70H2O (where SDA = structure directing agent), treated hydrothermally for 24 hours at 170 °C using either pyridine or 1-methylimizadole as SDA and one of either poorly crystalline ε-Ga2O3 or γ-Ga2O3 as gallium precursor. If the same gels are stirred for periods shorter than 2 hours but treated under identical hydrothermal conditions, then a second phase crystallises, free of GaPO-34. If β-Ga2O3 is used as a reagent only the second phase is found to crystallise, irrespective of gel aging time. The competing phase, which we denote GaPO-34A, has been structurally characterised using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction for the pyridine material, GaPO-34A(pyr), and using single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the 1-methylimiazole material, GaPO-34A(mim). The structure of GaPO-34A(pyr), P1[combining macron], a = 10.22682(6) Å, b = 12.09585(7) Å, c = 13.86713(8) Å, α = 104.6531(4)°, β = 100.8111(6)°, γ = 102.5228(6)°, contains 7 unique gallium sites and 6 phosphorus sites, with empirical formula [Ga7P6O24(OH)2F3(H2O)2]·2(C5NH6). GaPO-34A(mim) is isostructural but is modelled as a half volume unit cell, P1[combining macron], a = 5.0991(2) Å, b = 12.0631(6) Å, c = 13.8405(9) Å, α = 104.626(5)°, β = 100.346(5)°, γ = 101.936(4)°, with a gallium and a bridging fluoride partially occupied and two partially occupied SDA sites. Solid-state 31P and 71Ga NMR spectroscopy confirms the structural complexity of GaPO-34A with signals resulting from overlapping lineshapes from multiple Ga and P sites, while 1H and 13C solid-state NMR spectra confirm the presence of the protonated SDA and provide evidence for disorder in the SDA. The protonated SDA is located in 14-ring one-dimensional channels with hydrogen bonding deduced from the SDA nitrogens to framework oxygen distances. Upon thermal treatment to investigate SDA removal, structure collapse occurs, which may be due the large number of bridging hydroxides and fluorides in the as-made material, and the unequal amounts of gallium and phosphorus present.

Structural chemistry of fluoride and mixed-ligand fluoride complexes of gallium(III)

This article covers the structural chemistry of fluoride and mixed-ligand fluoride complexes of gallium(III), discusses more than 140 known crystal structures of anionic fluoride and mixed-ligand fluoride complexes and continues the discussion initiated in previous reviews dedicated to the stereochemistry and structural chemistry of group III–V metals fluoride complexes. Most of these structures have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, but some were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction methods. This paper offers a discussion of the geometry of gallium and outer sphere cation coordination polyhedra, the association of gallium atoms in dimer and polymer formations, types of cation-anion interactions, and their contributions in actual three-dimensional crystal structures. The structural information has been compiled in a single table containing phase compositions and the corresponding standard crystallographic data (such as crystal system, space group, unit cell parameters, number of formula units per cell [Z], reliability factors [R1], Ga-F, and Ga-O bond lengths).

Revealing the physical nature and the strength of charge-inverted hydrogen bonds by SAPT(DFT), MP2, SCS-MP2, MP2C, and CCSD(T) methods

The physical nature of charge-inverted hydrogen bonds in H₃ XH ⋯YH₃ (X = Si, Ge; Y = Al, Ga) dimer systems is studied by means of the SAPT(DFT)-based decomposition of interaction energies and supermolecular interaction energies based on MP2, SCS-MP2, MP2C, and CCSD(T) methods utilizing dimer-centered aug-cc-pCVnZ (n = D, T, Q) basis sets as well as an extrapolation to the complete basis set limit. It is revealed that charge-inverted hydrogen bonds are inductive in nature, although dispersion is also important. Computed interaction energies form the following relation: EintSAPT<EintSCS-MP2≤EintMP2C<EintMP2≈EintCCSD(T). It is confirmed that the aug-cc-pCVDZ basis set performs poorly and that very accurate values of interaction and dispersion energies require basis sets of at least quadrupole-ζ quality. Considerably large binding energies suggest potential usefulness of charge-inverted hydrogen bonds as an important structural motif in molecular binding. Terminology applying to σ- and π-hole interactions as well as to triel and tetrel bonds is discussed. According to this new terminology the charge-inverted hydrogen bond would become the first described case of a hydride-triel bond. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
