Reactivity of metal dioxo complexes

Metal dioxo chemistry and its diverse reactivity are presented with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reactivity. Work from approximately the last decade is surveyed and organized by metal. In particular, the chemistry of cis-dioxo metal complexes is discussed at length. Reactions are grouped by generic type, including addition across a metal oxo bond, oxygen atom transfer, and radical atom transfer reactions. Attention is given to advances in deoxygenation chemistry, oxidation chemistry, and reductive transformations.

Neutral W(V) Complexes Featuring the W2O2(µ-O)2 Core and Amino Acids or EDTA Derivatives as Ligands: Synthesis and Structural Characterization

Multinuclear complexes of heavy metals, such as tungsten, have demonstrated considerable potential as candidates for advanced radiocontrast agents. Of particular interest is the development of stable non-ionic compounds with high metal content and reasonably low osmolality in solution. Accordingly, we have synthesized a series of neutral W(V) complexes that contain the W2O2(µ-O)2 core and amino acids or disubstituted EDTA derivatives as ligands. The compounds were prepared from the oxalatotungstate(V) complex via a convenient procedure utilizing microwave heating. Their detailed characterization was accomplished by electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS), 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Further experiments to evaluate the utility of the complexes as radiocontrast media were precluded by their poor aqueous solubility.

Replacement of Molybdenum by Tungsten in a Biomimetic Complex Leads to an Increase in Oxygen Atom Transfer Catalytic Activity

Upon replacement of molybdenum by tungsten in DMSO reductase isolated from the Rhodobacteraceae family, the derived enzyme catalyzes DMSO reduction faster. To better understand this behavior, we synthesized two tungsten(VI) dioxido complexes [W^VIO₂L₂] with pyridine- (PyS) and pyrimidine-2-thiolate (PymS) ligands, isostructural to analogous molybdenum complexes we reported recently. Higher oxygen atom transfer (OAT) catalytic activity was observed with [WO₂(PyS)₂] compared to the Mo species, independent of whether PMe₃ or PPh₃ was used as the oxygen acceptor. [W^VIO₂L₂] complexes undergo reduction with an excess of PMe₃, yielding the tungsten(IV) oxido species [WOL₂(PMe₃)₂], while with PPh₃, no reactions are observed. Although OAT reactions from DMSO to phosphines are known for tungsten complexes, [WOL₂(PMe₃)₂] are the first fully characterized phosphine-stabilized intermediates. By following the reaction of these reduced species with excess DMSO via UV-vis spectroscopy, we observed that tungsten compounds directly react to W^VIO₂ complexes while the Mo analogues first form μ-oxo Mo(V) dimers [Mo₂O₃L₄]. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the oxygen atom abstraction from W^VIO₂ is an endergonic process contrasting the respective reaction with molybdenum. Here, we suggest that depending on the sacrificial oxygen acceptor, the tungsten complex may participate in catalysis either via a redox reaction or as an electrophile.

Simple Hybrids Based on Mo or W Oxides and Diamines: Structure Determination and Catalytic Properties

Abstract

Crystalline hybrid catalysts based on molybdenum or tungsten oxide and aliphatic diamines were synthesized via simple, eco-friendly reproducible methodologies, starting from commercially available and relatively inexpensive organic and inorganic precursors, and using water as solvent under mild conditions. The crystal structures of the obtained fine powdered solids were solved ab initio from powder X-ray diffraction data. The type of organic component (1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane, 1,3-diaminopropane) may play a structure-directing role. On the other hand, different metals (M = Mo, W) may lead to isostructural one-dimensional hybrids of the type MO3(L) with the same bidentate diamine ligand L. The prepared catalysts were investigated for the liquid phase oxidation of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (cis-cyclooctene, cyclooctane), using different types of oxidants (O2, H2O2, tert-butyl hydroperoxide). Differences in catalytic performances associated with distinct structural features were investigated.

Recent Advances in Facile Liquid Phase Epoxidation of Light Olefins over Heterogeneous Molybdenum Catalysts

Molybdenum complexes are versatile and efficient for liquid phase olefin epoxidation reactions. Rational design of catalysts is critical to achieve high atom efficiency during epoxidation processes. Although liquid phase epoxidation has been a popular topic for decades, three key issues, (a) rational control of morphology of molybdenum nanoparticles, (b) manipulating metal-support interaction and (c) altering electronic configuration at molybdenum center remains unsolved in this area. Therefore, in this paper, we have critically revised recent research progress on heterogeneous molybdenum catalysts for facile liquid phase olefin epoxidation in terms of catalyst synthesis, surface characterization, catalytic performance and structure-function relationship. Furthermore, plausible reaction mechanisms will be systematically discussed with the aim to provide insights into fundamental understanding on novel epoxidation chemistry.
