Syntheses, structures, luminescent properties and antibacterial activities of seven polymers based on an asymmetric triazole dicarboxylate ligand

Structural, vibrational spectroscopy, molecular docking, DFT studies and antibacterial activity of (E)-N1-(3-chlorobenzylidene)benzene-1,4-diamine

In this work, (E)-N1-(3-chlorobenzylidene)benzene-1,4-diamine (CBD) compound was synthesized with good yield. The spectral studies were recorded by FT-IR, FT-Raman, NMR and UV-Vis to determine structural parameters. The geometrical parameters were optimized using DFT calculations at 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The calculated structural parameters of the molecule were in line with the experimental data. The molecular orbitals of the compound were investigated through highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) analysis. The hyper conjugative interaction energy E(2) along with donor, acceptor electron densities (EDs) were determined by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), mulliken atomic charges, non-linear optical (NLO) properties and potential energy surface (PES) scan were also calculated. The 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts calculated using Gauge invariant atomic orbital (GIAO) method were compared with the experimental NMR chemical shifts. Thermogravimetry (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were carried out to characterise the thermal behaviour and stability of CBD molecule. In addition, PreADMET tool was also used to estimate ADME and Toxicity of CBD compound. The compound screened against four pathogens two gram positive and two gram negative had shown good anti-bacterial behaviour. The molecular docking studies executed against anti-bacterial target topoisomerase DNA gyrase enzyme (2XCT) emphasized good binding behaviour over the standard drug.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Manganese complexes and manganese-based metal-organic frameworks as contrast agents in MRI and chemotherapeutics agents: Applications and prospects

Manganese-based Metal-organic Frameworks (Mn-MOFs) represents a unique sub-class of MOFs with low toxicity, oxidative ability, and biocompatibility, which plays vital role in the application of this class of MOFs in medical field. Mn-MOFs show great potential in biomedical applications, and has been extensively studied as compared to other MOFs in transition metal series. They are important in medical applications because Mn(II) possess large electron spin number and longer electron relaxation time. They display fast water exchange rate and could be employed as a potential MRI contrast agent because of their strong targeting ability. Manganese complexes with different ligands also display prospective applications in area such as carrier for drug targeting in anti-tumor and antimicrobial therapy. In the review presented herewith, the application of Mn-based complexes and Mn-MOFs have been emphasized in the area such as imaging viz. MRI, multimodal imaging, antitumor activities such as chemodynamic therapy, photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy and antimicrobial applications. Also, how rational designing and syntheses of targeted Mn-based complexes and Mn-MOFs can engender desired applications.

Nanoapatites Doped and Co-Doped with Noble Metal Ions as Modern Antibiofilm Materials for Biomedical Applications against Drug-Resistant Clinical Strains of Enterococcus faecalis VRE and Staphylococcus aureus MRSA

The main aim of our research was to investigate antiadhesive and antibiofilm properties of nanocrystalline apatites doped and co-doped with noble metal ions (Ag⁺, Au⁺, and Pd²⁺) against selected drug-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. The materials with the structure of apatite (hydroxyapatite, nHAp; hydroxy-chlor-apatites, OH-Cl-Ap) containing 1 mol% and 2 mol% of dopants and co-dopants were successfully obtained by the wet chemistry method. The majority of them contained an additional phase of metallic nanoparticles, in particular, AuNPs and PdNPs, which was confirmed by the XRPD, FTIR, UV–Vis, and SEM–EDS techniques. Extensive microbiological tests of the nanoapatites were carried out determining their MIC, MBC value, and FICI. The antiadhesive and antibiofilm properties of the tested nanoapatites were determined in detail with the use of fluorescence microscopy and computer image analysis. The results showed that almost all tested nanoapatites strongly inhibit adhesion and biofilm production of the tested bacterial strains. Biomaterials have not shown any significant cytotoxic effect on fibroblasts and even increased their survival when co-incubated with bacterial biofilms. Performed analyses confirmed that the nanoapatites doped and co-doped with noble metal ions are safe and excellent antiadhesive and antibiofilm biomaterials with potential use in the future in medical sectors.

Alkali /alkaline earth-based metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications

With the steady development of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, this peculiar class of three-dimensional materials has found application prospects in a myriad of areas. The integration of different metals with various categories of ligands engendered a full gamut of frameworks, which of course are supplemented by diversified modification methods. Amongst many metal centers utilized to design and synthesize targeted MOFs, alkali/alkaline earth metal-based MOFs are gaining significant attention because these metal centers can be regarded as human endogenous metals. Numerous studies have shown that alkali/alkaline earth metal MOFs (A/A-E MOFs) tend to have better properties than other metals. This is because A/A-E MOFs offer better biocompatibility, so it is expected to be used in a broader field of biomedicine in the near future. This review mainly introduces the application of A/A-E MOF materials in drug delivery, sensing, and some materials with unique biomedical applications, and elaborates the challenges, obstacles and development of some A/A-E MOF materials in the biomedical field.

High Proton Conduction in Two Highly Water-Stable Lanthanide Coordination Polymers from a Triazole Multicarboxylate Ligand

Two lanthanide coordination polymers (CPs) {[Er(Hmtbd)(H₂mtbd)(H₂O)₃]·2H₂O}_n (1) and [Yb(Hmtbd)(H₂mtbd)(H₂O)₃]_n (2) carrying an N-heterocyclic carboxylate ligand 5-(3-methylformate-1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-methyl)benzen-1,3-dicarboxylate (H₃mtbd) were prepared under solvothermal conditions. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that 1 and 2 are isostructural and display 1D chain structure. Alternating current (AC) impedance measurements illustrate that the highest proton conductivities of 1 and 2 can attain 5.09 × 10^-3 and 3.09 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 at 100 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), respectively. The value of 1 exceeds those of most reported lanthanide-based crystalline materials and ranks second among the described Er-CPs under similar conditions, whereas the value for 2 is the highest proton conductivity among the previous Yb-CPs. Coupled with the structural analyses of the two CPs and H₂O vapor adsorption, the calculated E_a values help to deduce their proton conductive mechanisms. Notably, the N-heterocyclic units (triazole), carboxyl, and hydrogen-bonding network all play key roles in the proton-transfer process. The prominent proton conductive abilities of both CPs show great promise as efficient proton conductors.

A review: Pharmacological aspects of metal based 1,2,4-triazole derived Schiff bases

Clinical reports have highlighted the radical increase of antibiotic resistance. As a result, multidrug resistance has emerged as a serious threat to human health. Many organic compounds commonly used as drugs in the past, no longer have pure organic mode of action rather need bio-transformation or more activation. Bulk of research has shown that they need trace amount of metal ions incorporated within the chemistry of bioactive molecules for enhancement of their potentiality to fight aggressively against resistance. The deficiency of some metal ions can also be responsible for many diseases like growth retardation, pernicious anemia and heart diseases in infants. To overcome these problems, there is a need to introduce novel strategies which have new mechanism of action along with significant spectrum of biological activity, enhanced safety and efficacy. Bioinorganic compounds have played imperative role in developing the new strategy in the form of "Metal Based Drugs". In current years there have been momentous rise of interest in the application of metal based Schiff base compounds to treat various diseases which are difficult to be treated with conventional methodologies. The unique properties of metal chelates acting as an intermediate between conventional organic and inorganic compounds provided innovative opportunities in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry. In this review, we have exclusively focused on the search of metal based 1,2,4-triazole derived Schiff base compounds (synthesized, reported and reviewed in the past ten years) that possess various biological activities such as antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anthelmintic, anticancer, antiproliferative, cytotoxic and DNA-intercalation activity.

Structural diversity and magnetic properties of six ferrocenyl monocarboxylate Mn(ii), Ni(ii) and Co(ii) complexes with 1D aqua, carboxyl or dinuclear hydroxyl bridges

Six ferrocenyl monocarboxylate Mn(ii), Ni(ii) and Co(ii) complexes with different types of magnetic coupling bridges were synthesized successfully. 1–6 display intriguing structure diversity and magnetic properties.

Bi(iii) MOFs: syntheses, structures and applications

The synthesis methods, structures and applications of Bi(iii)-based MOFs in catalysis, adsorption, fluorescence, etc. are reviewed.

Terpyridine-metal complexes: effects of different substituents on their physico-chemical properties and density functional theory studies

A series of different substituted terpyridine (tpy)-based ligands have been synthesized by Kröhnke method. Their binding behaviour was evaluated by complexing them with Co(II), Fe(II) and Zn(II) ions, which resulted in interesting coordination compounds with formulae, [Zn(tpy)₂]PF₆, [Co(tpy)₂](PF₆)₂, [Fe(tpy)₂](PF₆)₂ and interesting spectroscopic properties. Their absorption and emission behaviours in dilute solutions were investigated in order to explain structure-property associations and demonstrate the impact of different aryl substituents on the terpyridine scaffold as well as the role of the metal on the complexes. Photo-luminescence analysis of the complexes in acetonitrile solution revealed a transition from hypsochromic to bathochromic shift. All the compounds displayed remarkable photo-luminescent properties and various maximum emission peaks owing to the different nature of the functional groups. Furthermore, the anti-microbial potential of ligands and complexes was evaluated with docking analyses carried out to investigate the binding affinity of terpyridine-based ligands along with corresponding proteins (shikimate dehydrogenase and penicillin-binding protein) binding sites. To obtain further insight into molecular orbital distributions and spectroscopic properties, density functional theory calculations were performed for representative complexes. The photophysical activity and interactions between chromophore structure and properties were both investigated experimentally as well as theoretically.

Eight Cd(ii) coordination polymers with persistent room-temperature phosphorescence: intriguing dual emission and time-resolved afterglow modulation

A new series of p-RTP CPs 1–8 were designed and successfully synthesized; 5–8, in particular, exhibited intriguing time-resolved afterglow modulation.

Two N,N'-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide coordination compounds

The molecular structures of tetra-aqua-[N,N'-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicar-boxamide]-sulfatomanganese(II) dihydrate, [Mn(SO4)(C17H13N5O2)(H2O)4]·2H2O or [Mn(H2L1)(SO4)(H2O)4]·2H2O, (I), and tetra-aqua-bis[N,N'-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicar-boxamide]cadmium(II) sulfate tetra-hydrate, [Cd(C17H13N5O2)2(H2O)4]SO4·4H2O or [Cd(H2O)4(H2L1)2]·SO4·4H2O, (II), both contain a central metal atom in a distorted octa-hedral geometry coordinated equatorially by four oxygen atoms from water mol-ecules. In (I), the axial positions are occupied by a nitro-gen atom from H2L1 and an oxygen atom from the sulfate anion, whereas in (II), the axial positions contain two nitro-gen atoms from two different H2L1 ligands and the sulfate anion acts as the charge-balancing ion. π-π stacking between pyridine rings and a network of hydrogen bonds involving the water molecules and the sulfate anions play a crucial role in the mol-ecular self-assembly of the two structures.
