A functional anionic metal–organic framework for selective adsorption and separation of organic dyes

Investigation into the Adsorption of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange by UiO-66-NO2 Nanoparticles

In this work, the adsorptive removal of methylene blue and methyl orange by UiO-66-NO₂ nanoparticles was studied. The influence of pH on the adsorption capacity was assessed. The kinetics of the adsorption process were investigated and compared with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle models. The kinetics of the adsorption fits moderately with the pseudo-first-order, but perfectly fits with pseudo-second-order models, and has a very good fit with the Elovich and intraparticle models. The adsorption isotherms were measured and compared with the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption capacity of methyl orange (MO) on UiO-66-NO₂ nanoparticles (142.9 mg/g) was over three times higher than that of methylene blue (MB) on the nanoparticles (41.7 mg/g). The discrepancy between these capacities was attributed to the presence of the -NO₂ functional group, which caused a strong negative mesomeric effect in the metal-organic framework structure.

Deployment of metal-organic frameworks as robust materials for sustainable catalysis and remediation of pollutants in environmental settings

From metal-organic chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of supreme interest for catalysis and environmental settings. Owing to anthropogenic sources and booming industrial practices, the most challenging issue is increased water pollution and environmental insecurity. For instance, several types of synthetic dyes are toxic up to a certain extent, as emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) pose adverse environmental and potential health consequences. A gradual increase in the contamination sources and unpredictable environmental changes in terms of anthropogenic pollution severely affect both water availability and distribution. Therefore, the treatment of dyes containing wastewater matrices for water resource generation is one of the most important tasks, which must be addressed effectively. With structural tunability, MOFs have been appearing as a robust tool for remediating toxic pollutants from wastewater matrices. Moreover, the promising functionality, structural tunability, robust catalytic attributes, compatibility, large surface area, stability in water, and ease in surface functionalization make MOFs one of the considerable materials of interest. This review work spotlights the present-day progress related to MOFs and their catalytic and adsorptive chemistry for a sustainable environment. Following a brief introduction, the characteristic rendering MOFs, as adsorbents, are given with prominent examples. Next, several synthesis routes as a roadmap to engineer MOFs are discussed. From the applied perspective, the adsorptive and catalytic potentialities of MOFs as given by addressing sustainable mitigation of toxic dyes. The last section of the work illustrates key challenging issues and future directions by considering the suiting importance of MOFs.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks as adsorbent materials for hazardous dye molecules

Water is vital for the sustenance of all forms of life. Hence, water pollution is a universal crisis for the survival for all forms of life and a hurdle in sustainable development. Textile industry is one of the anthropogenic activities that severely pollutes water bodies. Inefficient dyeing processes result in thousands of tons of synthetic dyes being dumped in water bodies every year. Therefore, the efficient removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater has become a challenging research field. Owing to their tuneable structure-property aspects, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising adsorbents for the adsorptive removal of dyes from wastewater and textile effluents. In this perspective, we highlight recent studies involving the application of MOFs for the adsorptive removal of hazardous dye molecules. We also classify the developed MOFs into cationic, anionic, and neutral framework categories to comprehend their suitability for the removal of a given class of dyes.

Adsorption of dicamba and MCPA onto MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework: response surface methodology and artificial neural network model studies

An aluminium-based metal–organic framework ((MOF), MIL-53(Al)), was hydrothermally synthesized, characterized and applied for the remediation of the herbicides dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxy benzoic acid) and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) in aqueous medium. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to design, optimize and predict the non-linear relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The shared interaction of the effects of key response parameters on the adsorption capacity were assessed using the central composite design-RSM and ANN optimization models. The optimum adsorption capacities for dicamba and MCPA are 228.5 and 231.9 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The RSM ANOVA results showed significant p-values, with coefficients of determination (R²) = 0.988 and 0.987 and R² adjusted = 0.974 and 0.976 for dicamba and MCPA, respectively. The ANN prediction model gave R² = 0.999 and 0.999, R² adjusted = 0.997 and 0.995 and root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.001 and 0.004 for dicamba and MCPA, respectively. In each set of experimental conditions used for the study, the ANN gave better prediction than the RSM, with high accuracy and minimal error. The rapid removal (∼25 min), reusability (5 times) and good agreement between the experimental findings and simulation results suggest the great potential of MIL-53(Al) for the remediation of dicamba and MCPA from water matrices.

Zinc-tetracarboxylate framework material with nano-cages and one-dimensional channels for excellent selective and effective adsorption of methyl blue dye

An example of a zinc-tetracarboxylate framework material (FJI-11) was solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. FJI-11 presented 3D cage-stacking frameworks with octahedral cages, cuboctahedral cages and two kinds of 1D channel along the c-axis. In addition, FJI-11 exhibited the excellent selective and effective adsorption of methyl blue (MB) dye by guest molecule exchange, and its adsorption process was in accordance with the second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model.

Assembly of four new cobalt coordination polymers modulated by N-coligands: sensitive and selective sensing of nitroaromatics, Fe3+and Cr2O72−in water

Four new Co-CPs (1to4) have been obtained with the modulation of N-coligands.2and3can serve as multi-responsive sensors for rapid and sensitive detection of nitroaromatics, Fe³⁺and Cr₂O₇²⁻in water.

Biosorption of Methylene Blue Dye Using Natural Biosorbents Made from Weeds

The purpose of this work is to make use of vegetables that, although widely found in nature, there are few applications. The weeds used here, Cyanthilium cinereum (L.) H. Rob (CCLHR) and Paspalum maritimum (PMT) found in the Amazon region of Belém state of Pará-Brazil, contribute to the problem of water contamination by the removal of the methylene blue dye through the biosorption process, taking advantage of other materials for economic viability and processing. The influences of parameters such as, biosorbent dose, contact time, and initial concentration of dye were examined. The characterizations were realized using SEM to verify the morphology of the material and spectroscopy in the FTIR region. As for the adsorption mechanism, the physical adsorption mechanism prevailed. The time required for the system to reach equilibrium for both biosorbents was from 50 min, following a kinetics described by the pseudo-second order model. The adsorption isotherm data for PMT were better adjusted to the Langmuir model and the biosorption capacity (qmax) value was (56.1798 mg/g). CCLHR was better adjusted to the Freundlich model and its maximum biosorption capacity was 76.3359 mg/g. Thus, these weed species are promising for the biosorption of methylene blue dye in effluents.
