A 10-coordinate cerium(III) complex with a ferrocene-based terpyridine ligand exhibiting field-induced slow magnetic relaxation

Spin dynamics phenomena of a cerium(III) double-decker complex induced by intramolecular electron transfer

Switchable spin dynamic properties in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) via an applied stimulus have applications in single-molecule devices. Many SMMs containing heavy lanthanoid ions with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have been reported to exhibit SMM characteristics in the absence of an external magnetic field. On the other hand, SMMs containing light lanthanoid cerium(III) (Ce3+) ions exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. We investigated the chemical conversion of a diamagnetic Ce4+ ion (4f0) to a paramagnetic Ce3+ ion (4f1) in Ce-phthalocyaninato double-decker complexes (TBA+[Ce(obPc)2]- (1) and TBA+[Ce(Pc)2]- (2)) which exhibit field-induced SMM behaviour due to a 4f1 system. The phthalocyaninato ligands with electron-donating substituents (obPc2- = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octabutoxyphthalocyaninato) in 1 have a significant effect on the valence state of the Ce ion, which is reflected in its magnetic properties due to the mixed valence state of the Ce ion. Given that Ce double-decker complexes with π-conjugated ligands undergo intramolecular electron transfer (IET) to the Ce ion mixed valence state, characterised by a mixture of 4f0 and 4f1 configurations, we examined the dynamic disorder inherent in IET influencing magnetic relaxation.

Cerium(IV) Pyrasal Complexes: A pH-Dependent 8- to 10-Coordinate Cerium Chelate Switch

In this work, five cerium(IV) complexes were synthesized, three of which were structural isomorphs from the same pyrasal ligand with the solid-state result identified by structural analysis dependent on the initial pH of the reaction solution and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. The ligands explored here are pyrasal ligands, which are Schiff-base ligands formed by the condensation of 2,3-diaminopyrazine and a salicylaldehyde derivative. Pyrasal ligands have weaker binding than other salophen-type ligands due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the nitrogen atoms contained within the pyrazine ring. The weaker binding leaves the ligand more susceptible to the changes in pH and temperature that alternate the chelating environment from 8- to 10-coordinate. This electron-withdrawing effect of the pyrazine backbone also deactivates the second amine after the first condensation addition of salicylaldehyde. Without a metal to template the complex formation reaction, even with extended reaction times and the addition of a large excess of ligand, the result is the addition of only one salicylaldehyde.

Field-induced SIM behaviour in early lanthanide(III) organophosphates containing 18-crown-6

Single-ion magnets (SIMs) have attracted wide attention in recent years. Despite tremendous progress in late lanthanide SIMs, reports on early lanthanides exhibiting SIM characteristics are scarce. A series of five novel 18-crown-6 encapsulated mononuclear early lanthanide(III) organophosphates, [{(18-crown-6)Ln(dippH)₃}{(18-crown-6)Ln(dippH)₂(dippH₂)}]·[I₃] [Ln = Ce (1), Pr (2), Nd (3)] and [{Ln(18-crown-6)(dippH)₂(H₂O)}·{I₃}] [Ln = Sm (4) and Eu (5)], have been synthesised in the present study. 18-crown-6 coordinates to Ln(III) ions in an equatorial position while the axial positions are occupied by either three phosphate moieties as in 1-3 or two phosphate moieties and one water molecule as in 4 and 5, resulting in a muffin-shaped coordination geometry around the Ln(III) centres. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that Ce and Nd complexes are field-induced single-ion magnets with significant barrier heights. Furthermore, the ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations on complexes 1 and 3 reveal significant QTM in the ground state rationalising the field-induced single-ion magnetism behaviour of these complexes.

Insights into the Spin Dynamics of Mononuclear Cerium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Four novel Ce^III mononuclear complexes of formulas [Ce(ntfa)₃(MeOH)₂] (1), [Ce(ntfa)₃(5,5'-Me₂bipy)] (2), [Ce(ntfa)₃(terpy)] (3), and [Ce(ntfa)₃(bipy)₂] (4), where ntfa = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionato, 5,5'-Me₂bipy = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, have been synthesized and structurally characterized with Ce^III displaying coordination numbers of 8, 8, 9, and 10, respectively. Magnetic measurements indicate that all the complexes show a field-induced single-ion magnet behavior under a small applied dc field. The magnetic analysis shows the relevance of the different spin relaxation mechanisms in the magnetic relaxation of the Ce^III compounds, with special emphasis on the local-mode process. Multiconfigurational calculations were also performed to get more information on the axiality of the compounds.

Structural variations of trinitrato(terpyridine)lanthanoid complexes

The structural characterization of the newly synthesized trinitrato(terpyridine)lanthanoid complexes [Nd(NO3)3(pytpy)(H2O)] (1), [Eu(NO3)3(pytpy)(EtOH)]·EtOH (2·EtOH) and [Tb(NO3)3(ptpy)(EtOH)] (3), with the modified terpyridine ligands pytpy = 4′-(pyridin-3-yl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine and ptpy = 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, show all a coordination number of 10 at the metal ion with three bidentate nitrato ligands and an additional solvent ligand. The coordination polyhedra around the metal ions are highly irregular. Hirshfeld surface analyses of the intermolecular interactions show (C/O–)H⋯O bonding having the largest percentage contribution in all three structures, while there are remarkably few π-π interactions despite the numerous aryl rings.

High-Coordinate Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes: Synthetic Strategies and Magnetic Properties

Single-molecule magnets involving monometallic 4f complexes have been investigated extensively in last two decades to understand the factors that govern the slow magnetization relaxation behavior in these complexes and to establish a magneto-structural correlation. The prime goal in this direction is to suppress the temperature independent quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) effect via fine-tuning the coordination geometry/microenvironment. Among the various coordination geometries that have been pursued, complexes containing high coordination number around Ln(III) are sparse. Herein, we present a summary of the various synthetic strategies that were used for the assembly of 10- and 12-coordinated Ln(III) complexes. The magnetic properties of such complexes are also described.
