Synthesis and study of Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes based on octachloro-1,10-phenanthroline: Towards deep red-to-NIR emitters

Red Light Absorption of [ReI(CO)3(α-diimine)Cl] Complexes through Extension of the 4,4'-Bipyrimidine Ligand's π-System

Rhenium(I) complexes of type [Re(CO)₃(NN)Cl] (NN = α-diimine) with MLCT absorption in the orange-red region of the visible spectrum have been synthesized and fully characterized, including single crystal X-ray diffraction on two complexes. The strong bathochromic shift of MLCT absorption was achieved through extension of the π-system of the electron-poor bidiazine ligand 4,4'-bipyrimidine by the addition of fused phenyl rings, resulting in 4,4'-biquinazoline. Furthermore, upon anionic cyclization of the twisted bidiazine, a new 4N-doped perylene ligand, namely, 1,3,10,12-tetraazaperylene, was obtained. Electrochemical characterization revealed a significant stabilization of the LUMO in this series, with the first reduction of the azaperylene found at E1/2(0/-) = -1.131 V vs. Fc⁺/Fc, which is the most anodic half-wave potential observed for N-doped perylene derivatives so far. The low LUMO energies were directly correlated to the photophysical properties of the respective complexes, resulting in a strongly red-shifted MLCT absorption band in chloroform with a λ_max = 586 nm and high extinction coefficients (ε_586nm > 5000 M^-1 cm^-1) ranging above 700 nm in the case of the tetraazaperylene complex. Such low-energy MLCT absorption is highly unusual for Re(I) α-diimine complexes, for which these bands are typically found in the near UV. The reported 1,3,10,12-tetraazaperylene complex displayed the [Re(CO)₃(α-diimine)Cl] complex with the strongest MLCT red shift ever reported. UV-Vis NIR spectroelectrochemical investigations gave further insights into the nature and stability of the reduced states. The electron-poor ligands explored herein open up a new path for designing metal complexes with strongly red-shifted absorption, thus enabling photocatalysis and photomedical applications with low-energy, tissue-penetrating red light in future.

Exploring the in vitro anticancer activities of Re(I) picolinic acid and its fluorinated complex derivatives on lung cancer cells: a structural study

Fifteen rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes of the form fac-[Re(N,O')(CO)₃(X)], where N,O'-bidentate ligand = 2-picolinic acid (Pico); 3,5-difluoropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Dfpc); 3-trifluoromethyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Tfpc) and X = H₂O; pyrazole (Pz); pyridine (Py); imidazole (Im); and methanol (CH₃OH) were synthesized using the '2 + 1' mixed ligand approach with an average yield of 84%. The complexes were characterized using the following spectroscopic techniques: IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, UV/Vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effect of the fluorine atoms on the backbone of the N,O'-bidentate ligand was investigated and a trend was noticed in the carbonyl stretching frequencies: with Pico < Tfpc < Dfpc. The in vitro biological screening on Vero (healthy mammalian), HeLa (cervical carcinoma) and A549 (lung cancer) cells revealed one toxic complex, fac-[Re(Pico)(CO)₃(H₂O)], with respective LC₅₀ values of 9.0 ± 0.9, 15.8 ± 4.9 (SI = 0.570) and 20.9 ± 0.8 (SI = 0.430) μg/mL. As a result, it can be used as a positive control drug of toxicity.

Near-Infrared Absorption Properties of Neutral Bis(1,2-dithiolene) Platinum(II) Complexes Using Density Functional Theory

Small metal complexes are highly interesting for bioimaging because of their excellent near-infrared (NIR) absorption properties. In this study, neutral complexes of platinum(II) connected to two monoreduced 1,3-diisopropylimidazoline-2,4,5-trithione ligands—namely, [Pt(iPr₂timdt)₂]—were investigated. Theoretical studies using the density functional theory (DFT) and GW-BSE approximation verified the effects of the geometry of the isopropyl moieties on the NIR absorption spectra. The calculated absorption spectra showed excellent correspondence with the experimental results. The geometry of the isopropyl groups considerably influenced the electronic structures of the metal complexes, which altered the absorption profiles of the respective geometries, as demonstrated in this research.
