Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes containing ONNO tetradentate Schiff base ligand: Synthesis, crystal structure, spectral characterization, theoretical studies, and use of PdL as an efficient homogeneous catalyst for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

Recovery of Homogeneous Platinoid Catalysts from Pharmaceutical Media: Review on the Existing Treatments and the Perspectives of Membrane Processes

Catalyst recovery is a major challenge for reaching the objectives of green chemistry for industry. Indeed, catalysts enable quick and selective syntheses with high reaction yields. This is especially the case for homogeneous platinoid catalysts which are almost indispensable for cross-coupling reactions often used by the pharmaceutical industry. However, they are based on scarce, expensive, and toxic resources. In addition, they are quite sensitive and degrade over time at the end of the reaction. Once degraded, their regeneration is complex and hazardous to implement. Working on their recovery could lead to highly effective catalytic chemistries while limiting the environmental and economic impacts of their one-time uses. This review aims to describe and compare conventional processes for metal removal while discussing their advantages and drawbacks considering the objective of homogeneous catalyst recovery. Most of them lead to difficulty recycling active catalysts due to their ability to only treat metal ions or to chelate catalysts without the possibility to reverse the mechanism. However, membrane processes seem to offer some perspectives with limiting degradations. While membranes are not systematically the best option for recycling homogeneous catalysts, current development might help improve the separation between pharmaceutical active ingredients and catalysts and enable their recycling.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and Antibacterial Study of Pd(II) and Ni(II) Schiff Base Complexes Derived from Aliphatic Diamine

A Schiff base bearing two methyl substituents, namely, 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-((2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl) bis(azanylylidene)) bis(methanylylidene)) bis(2-methylphenol) [H₂AD1Me] was synthesized and characterized through physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses. Then, the Schiff base was complexed with Pd(II) and Ni(II) to form [Pd(AD1Me)] and [Ni(AD1Me)], respectively. Both metal complexes were successfully obtained and characterized through several analyses, viz., melting point, elemental analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, FTIR, ¹H NMR, UV-vis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. A quantitative analysis of the intermolecular interactions in the crystal structures has been performed using Hirshfeld surface analysis. Both metal complexes were crystallized in a monoclinic crystal system with the space group of P2₁/c. Additionally, the deprotonated phenolic oxygen atom (O1/O2) and azomethine nitrogen atom (N1/N2) of the ligand chelate the Pd(II) and Ni(II) ions, forming a slightly distorted square-planar complex containing three six-membered rings encircling the metal core with dsp² hybridization. The shift of ν(C=N) to a higher frequency in FTIR by 26-28 cm^-1 indicated that the complexation to Pd(II) and Ni(II) through the azomethine N was established. It was further supported through the shifting of the azomethine proton signal to higher or lower chemical shifts with Δδ = 0.43-1.15 ppm in ¹H NMR. In addition, the shifting of the n-π*(C=N) band in UV-vis spectra with Δλ = 24-40 nm indicated the involvement of azomethine nitrogen in the complexation. All the compounds showed no significant antibacterial activity against three bacterial strains, namely, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus Rosenbach (ATCC 6538), Streptococcus mutans Clarke (ATCC 700,610), and Proteus vulgaris (ATCC 6380), as the percent growth inhibition calculated was less than 90%.

New Bi-Nuclear Nickel(II) Complex-Based Salen Schiff Base: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Spectroscopic, Thermal, and Electrical Investigations

In this study, a new bi-nuclear nickel complex [Ni2HL2(EtOH)2](Cl)(EtOH) of a Schiff base ligand, 2-[3-[2-hydroxybenzylideneamino]propyliminomethyl]phenol, was synthesized and characterized using UV/Vis, IR, HRMS, and TGA/DTA analysis. The molecular structure of the obtained complex was corroborated by the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. It was found in the complex that two molecules of the ligand coordinate with two nickel atoms through azomethine-N and phenoxy-O, resulting in 6-coordinate distorted octahedral geometry, in which two ethanol molecules occupy the axial positions. The dielectric and electrical properties of the obtained samples were studied by impedance spectroscopy at different frequencies (from 1 Hz to 1 MHz) in the temperature range 298–343 K. It is found that the electrical conductivity of the Ni(II) complex is lower than that of the free ligand H2L, suggesting that the complexation traps the charge carriers contained in the ligand.
