Exploring the latest trends in chemistry, structure, coordination, and diverse applications of 1-acyl-3-substituted thioureas: a comprehensive review

Acyl thioureas represent a privileged moiety with vast potential applicability across diverse fields, making them the subject of extensive research efforts. The inherent flexibility of thiourea facilitates the synthesis of a wide range of core structures with diverse functionalities and properties. The distinctive presence of hard and soft donor sites renders acyl thioureas inclined to act as versatile ligands, thereby engendering a diverse array of metal complexes incorporating acyl thiourea as a pivotal ligand. Extensive investigations into the synthesized acyl thioureas and their derivatives have culminated in the elucidation of their substantial potential across a spectrum of applications, spanning biological activities, materials chemistry, catalysis, and beyond. This literature review represents a continuation of our ongoing endeavor to compile comprehensive data on research endeavors concerning acyl thioureas over the past two years.

Palladium complexes containing NNN pincer type ligands and their activities in Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction

Five new NNN pincer-type ligands and their palladium complexes were successfully synthesised and characterised by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and UV-vis analyses. TEM analysis was used to observe the morphological character of the black residues obtained from the fourth cycle of the reusability test. Furthermore, suitable crystals of the N²,N⁶-bis(2-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide and its palladium complex were elucidated with the X-ray single crystal diffraction method. Both the ligand and its palladium complex crystallise in a monoclinic system with space group P2₁/c for the H₂L⁴ and C2/c for the palladium complex. The structure of the pincer ligand and its palladium complex were stabilised by intramolecular and intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅O, C-H⋅⋅⋅N, and N-H⋅⋅⋅N contacts. A Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and phenylboronic acid was used to assess the catalytic abilities of the palladium pincer complexes. All of the prepared complexes exhibited considerable catalytic activity. However, complexes 4 (Acetonitrile-N²,N⁶-bis(2-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamidopalladium(II)) and 5 (Acetonitrile-N²,N⁶-bis(2-nitrophenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamidopalladium(II)) provided almost 100% conversion with nearly 100% yield in the reaction between 4-bromotoluene and phenylboronic acid. Furthermore, these active complexes catalysed the reaction of the sterically hindered and deactivated substrates (1-Bromo-4-izobutylbenzene and 2-bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene) with phenylboronic acid, and complete conversion and yields up to 100% were achieved in a short time with the 2-bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene.

Columnar Liquid Crystals of Copper(I) Complexes with Ionic Conductivity and Solid State Emission

Two neutral copper(I) halide complexes ([Cu(BTU)₂X], X = Cl, Br) were prepared by the reduction of the corresponding copper(II) halides (chloride or bromide) with a benzoylthiourea (BTU, N-(3,4-diheptyloxybenzoyl)-N'-(4-heptadecafluorooctylphenyl)thiourea) ligand in ethanol. The two copper(I) complexes show a very interesting combination of 2D supramolecular structures, liquid crystalline, emission, and 1D ionic conduction properties. Their chemical structure was ascribed based on ESI-MS, elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies (¹H and ¹³C), while the mesomorphic behavior was analyzed through a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). These new copper(I) complexes have mesomorphic properties and exhibit a hexagonal columnar mesophase over a large temperature range, more than 100 K, as evidenced by DSC studies and POM observations. The thermogravimetric analysis (TG) indicated a very good thermal stability of these samples up to the isotropization temperatures and over the whole temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase existence. Both complexes displayed a solid-state emission with quantum yields up to 8% at ambient temperature. The electrical properties of the new metallomesogens were investigated by variable temperature dielectric spectroscopy over the entire temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase. It was found that the liquid crystal phases favoured anhydrous proton conduction provided by the hydrogen-bonding networks formed by the NH…X moieties (X = halide or oxygen) of the benzoylthiourea ligand in the copper(I) complexes. A proton conductivity of 2.97 × 10^-7 S·cm^-1 was achieved at 430 K for the chloro-complex and 1.37 × 10^-6 S·cm^-1 at 440K for the related bromo-complex.
