Ultrasound-Promoted Abatement of Formaldehyde in Liquid Phase with Electrospun Nanostructured Membranes: The Synergy of Combined AOPs

The present work investigates the effect of ultrasounds in the performance of combined advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) on the degradation of formaldehyde (HCHO)-polluted aqueous solutions for potential application in wastewater treatment. Different heterogeneous nanostructured catalysts based on TiO₂ and FeSO₄ for photocatalysis and the Fenton process were employed after electrospray deposition on electrospun nanofibrous membranes. Such systems were tested, without the use of any added hydrogen peroxide, by varying the combinations among the selected AOPs in a batch reactor configuration. The results show that, in the absence of a Fenton reaction, ultrasounds provided a significantly increased formaldehyde photocatalytic abatement, probably by increasing the concentration of active species through a different set of reactions while providing a favorable mass transfer regime by the cavitational effect. Due to the faster kinetics of the photo-Fenton process, thanks to its partial homogeneous nature, such a beneficial effect is more limited for the sono-photo-Fenton configuration. On the other hand, the employment of a sono-photocatalytic-Fenton process revealed a synergic effect that provided the best results, reducing the formaldehyde concentration to less than 99% after 240 min. Further analysis showed that, due to a mutual influence, only a tailored TiO₂/FeSO₄ ratio on the membranes was able to display the best performance.

The effect of metal oxide on the cure, morphology, thermal and mechanical characteristics of chloroprene and butadiene rubber blends

This paper discusses the role of metal oxides (MeO) in the cross-linking process and useful properties of chloroprene and butadiene rubber (CR/BR) blends. Iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), iron(II,III) oxide (Fe3O4), silver(I) oxide (Ag2O) or zinc oxide were used. It has found that every proposed metal oxide can be used as a cross-linking agent of the CR/BR blends. The degree of cross-linking was evaluated by means of vulcametric parameters, equilibrium swelling in selected solvents and Mooney–Rivlin elasticity constants. The properties of the cured CR/BR products, such as tensile strength, stress at elongation, tension set under constant elongation and compression set, were also investigated. The results revealed that all CR/BR/MeO vulcanizates were characterized by a high cross-linking degree and satisfying mechanical properties. The most important advantage of obtained rubber goods is very high resistance to flame. The increase in the oxygen index value for the CR/BR/Fe2O3, CR/BR/Fe3O4 and CR/BR/Ag2O vulcanizates compared to the standard cross-linked chloroprene rubber showed that presented metal oxides provided a positive effect on the resistance to flame of the new CR/BR/MeO composites. Satisfactory properties of the studied blends are related to the presence of the interelastomer bonding of both rubbers in the compositions.

Synthesis and Characterization of PPV Monomer for Subsequent Electropolymerization

Organic synthesis of the monomer of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) was performed starting by the 2,5-dimethylphenol compound. An iodine atom was added to one end of the aromatic ring and then the iodine atom was substituted by a cyano group. Opposite to the cyano group was added a chain of six carbon atoms and the end of the carbon chain has an added bromine atom. The characterizations of the obtained compounds were made by FTIR, GC-MS,1H, and13C NMR and showed that almost all of the proposed monomers were obtained in their totality.

Determining the Geometry and Magnetic Parameters of Fluorinated Radicals by Simulation of Powder ESR Spectra and DFT Calculations: The Case of the Radical RCF2CF2• in Nafion Perfluorinated Ionomers

The ESR spectrum of the chain-end radical RCF2CF2* detected in Nafion perfluorinated membranes exposed to the photo-Fenton reagent was accurately simulated by an automatic fitting procedure, using as input the hyperfine coupling tensors of the two F alpha and two F beta nuclei as well as the corresponding directions of the principal values from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. An accurate fit was obtained only for different orientations of the hyperfine coupling tensors for the two F alpha nuclei, indicating a nonplanar structure about the C alpha radical center. The fitted isotropic hyperfine splittings for the two F beta nuclei in the Nafion radical, 24.9 and 27.5 G, are significantly larger than those for the chain-end radical in Teflon (15 G), implying different radical conformations in the two systems. The excellent fit indicated that the geometry and electronic structure of free radicals can be obtained not only from single-crystal ESR spectroscopy, but also, in certain cases, from powder spectra, by combination with data from DFT calculations. The optimized structures obtained by DFT calculations for the CF3CF2CF2CF2* or CF3OCF2CF2* radicals as models provided additional support for the pyramidal structure determined from the spectral fit. Comparison and analysis of calculated and fitted values for the hyperfine splittings of the two F beta nuclei suggested that the radical detected by ESR in Nafion is ROCF2CF2*, which originates from attack of oxygen radicals on the Nafion side chain. The combination of spectrum fitting and DFT is considered important in terms of understanding the hyperfine splittings from 19F nuclei and the different conformations of fluorinated chain-end-type radicals RCF2CF2* in different systems, and also for elucidating the mechanism of Nafion fragmentation when exposed to oxygen radicals in fuel cell conditions.
