TGA/FTIR study on thermal degradation of polymethacrylates containing carboxylic groups

A sustainable nano-hybrid system of laccase@M-MWCNTs for multifunctional PAHs and PhACs removal from water, wastewater, and lake water

This study examined the use of modified multiwall carbon nanotubes (M-MWCNTs) with immobilized laccase (L@M-MWCNTs) for removing ciprofloxacin (Cip), carbamazepine (Cbz), diclofenac (Dcf), benzo[a]pyrene (Bap), and anthracene (Ant) from different water samples. The synthesized materials were characterized using an array of advanced analytical techniques. The physical immobilization of laccase onto M-MWCNTs was confirmed through Scanning electron microscope (SEM)-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis and Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area measurements. The specific surface area of M-MWCNTs decreased by 65% upon laccase immobilization. There was also an increase in nitrogen content seen by EDS analysis asserting successful immobilization. The results of Boehm titration and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) exhibited an increase in acidic functional groups after laccase immobilization. L@M-MWCNTs storage for two months maintained 77.8%, 61.6%, and 57.6% of its initial activity for 4 °C, 25 °C, and 35 °C, respectively. In contrast, the free laccase exhibited 55.3%, 37.5%, and 23.5% of its initial activity at 4 °C, 25 °C, and 35 °C, respectively. MWCNTs improved storability and widened the working temperature range of laccase. The optimum removal conditions of studied pollutants were pH 5, 25 °C, and 1.6 g/L of M-MWCNTs. These parameters led to >90% removal of the targeted pollutants for four treatment cycles of both synthetic water and spiked lake water. L@M-MWCNTs demonstrated consistent removal of >90% for up to five cycles even with spiked wastewater. The adsorption was endothermic and followed Langmuir isotherm. Oxidation, dehydrogenation, hydroxylation, and ring cleavage seem to be the dominant degradation mechanisms.

Preparation of reed fibers reinforced graft-modified starch-based adhesives based on quantum mechanical simulation and molecular dynamics simulation

Starch is a biomass polymer material with a high yield and comprehensive source. It is used as a raw material for preparing adhesives because of its highly active hydroxyl group. However, poor adhesion and water resistance hinder the application of starch-based adhesives (SBAs). Based on this, the starch was modified through graft copolymerization with itaconic acid as a cross-linking agent, methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate as copolymers. Additionally, reed fibers were synergistically modified with polydopamine deposition to prepare an environmentally friendly SBA used in plywood production. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) demonstrate that copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate with starch improves the shear strength, water resistance, and thermal stability of the SBA. Compared to unmodified starch, the modified SBA exhibits a 129 % increase in dry strength and achieves a wet strength of 1.36 MPa. Fukui function, Frontier orbit theory, and molecular dynamics simulation have shown that itaconic acid promotes the copolymerization of starch and acrylate monomers. The modified starch has fewer hydrogen bonds, less order, and a denser macromolecular network structure, which provides a reference for studying the molecular interaction mechanisms of SBAs.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as efficient catalytic tools for the oxidative degradation of 4-nonylphenol and its by-products

Water pollution is a current global concern caused by emerging pollutants like nonylphenol (NP). This endocrine disruptor cannot be efficiently removed with traditional wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the adsorption influence of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the oxidative degradation (ozone and ultraviolet irradiations) of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and its by-products as a coadjuvant in WTPs. MIPs were synthesized and characterized; the effect of the degradation rate under system operating conditions was studied by Box-Behnken response surface design of experiments. The variables evaluated were 4-NP concentration, ozone exposure time, pH, and MIP amount. Results show that the MIPs synthesized by co-precipitation and bulk polymerizations obtained the highest retention rates (> 90%). The maximum adsorption capacities for 4-NP were 201.1 mg L-1 and 500 mg L-1, respectively. The degradation percentages under O3 and UV conditions reached 98-100% at 120 s of exposure at different pHs. The degradation products of 4-NP were compounds with carboxylic and ketonic acids, and the MIP adsorption was between 50 and 60%. Our results present the first application of MIPs in oxidation processes for 4-NP, representing starting points for the use of highly selective materials to identify and remove emerging pollutants and their degradation by-products in environmental matrices.

Comprehensive analysis of common polymers using hyphenated TGA-FTIR-GC/MS and Raman spectroscopy towards a database for micro- and nanoplastics identification, characterization, and quantitation

Environmental contamination by micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) is well documented with potential for their increased accumulation globally. Growing public concern over environmental, ecological, and human exposure to MNPs has led to exponential increase in publications, news articles, and reports (Casillas et al., 2023). Significant knowledge gap exists in standardized analytical methods for the identification and quantification of MNPs from real world environmental samples. Here, we report comprehensive datasets utilizing thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) coupled to a Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and a gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) with corresponding Raman spectral data for the most common polymers documented to be present in the environment (35 plastics of 12 polymer types), to serve as a base line reference for the identification and quantitation of MNPs. Various parameters for TGA-FTIR-GC/MS data acquisition were optimized. Commercial consumer plastic product compositions were identified using this analytical database. Case studies to showcase the utility of the method for polymer mixtures analysis is included. This dataset would serve towards the development of a collaborative, global, comprehensive, and curated public database for the identification of various MNPs and mixtures.

Carbonate treated coffee powder (CTCP) for selective sorption of Pu4+ over Am3+, Np4+, NpO22+, and PuO22+ from aqueous acidic solution: Investigation on mechanism, kinetics, thermodynamics, stripping and radiolytic stability

An attempt was made for understanding the sorption behaviour of different actinide ions Pu⁴⁺, PuO₂²⁺, Am³⁺, Np⁴⁺, and NpO₂²⁺ on carbonate treated exhausted coffee powder (CTCP). Very efficient sorption of Pu⁴⁺ over other actinide ions from aqueous acidic medium was observed. Almost 4 h were required for achieving equilibrium. Experimental results for Pu⁺⁴ were fitted into different sorption isotherm model: Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm, D.R, isotherm and Temkin isotherm. Based on the linear regression, it was found that, Freundlich isotherm was predominantly operative. Pseudo 2nd order kinetics was found to be effective for the sorption of Pu⁺⁴. More than 80 % of loaded Pu⁴⁺ was found to desorb by 0.25 M oxalic acid solution. CTCP exhibited relatively good radiation stability. Sorption of Pu⁺⁴ on CTCP was exothermic, and spontaneous in nature. The sorption process was simple, cost effective and environmentally benign, as it did not involve any sophisticated, multi-step, sorbent synthesis.

Accurate detection of enzymatic degradation processes of gelatin-alginate microcapsule by 1H NMR spectroscopy: Probing biodegradation mechanism and kinetics

With an increase in the severity of environmental pollution caused by microbeads, the development of biodegradable microcapsules that can be applied in diverse fields has attracted significant attention. The degradation processes are directly related to biodegradable microcapsule creation with high stability and persistence. In this study, biodegradable microcapsules are synthesized via a complex coacervation approach using gelatin and alginate as the capsule main wall materials; additionally, enzyme-induced decomposition mechanisms are proposed by observing spectral changes in proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) analyses. Additional analytical techniques confirm the chemical structure, morphology, and size distribution of the synthesized capsules; these uniform spherical microcapsules are 20-30 μm in size and possess a smooth surface. In addition to characterization, the microcapsules were exposed to targeted enzymes to investigate enzymatic effects using short-term and long-term degradation kinetics. Close inspection reveals that determination of the degradation rate constant of the major components in the capsule is feasible, and suggests two types of 4-stage degradation mechanisms that are enzyme-specific. These investigations demonstrate that capsule degradation can be explored in detail using ¹H NMR spectroscopy to provide a viable strategy for monitoring degradation properties in the development of new biodegradable polymers.

Design and application of molecularly imprinted polymers for adsorption and environmental assessment of anti-inflammatory drugs in wastewater samples

In this study, a series of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been synthesized using separately diclofenac, naproxen, and ibuprofen as templates with three different polymerization approaches. Two functional monomers, methacrylic acid (MAA) and 2-vinylpyridine (2-VP), were tested and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was used as crosslinker; also, template-free polymers (NIPs) were synthesized. It was found that the MIP with the highest retention percentage for diclofenac was the one prepared by the emulsion approach and with MAA (98.3%); for naproxen, the one prepared by the bulk polymerization with MAA (99%); and for ibuprofen, the one synthesized by bulk with 2-VP (97.7%). These three MIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric test, Fourier transform infrared, specific area measurements, and surface charge. It was found that the emulsion method allowed particle size control, while the bulk method gave heterogeneous particles. The three evaluated MIPs exhibited thermal stability up to 300 °C, and it was observed that 2-VP confers greater stability to the material. From the BET analysis, it was demonstrated that the MIPs and NIPs evaluated are mesoporous materials with a pore size between 10 and 20 nm. In addition, the monomer influenced the surface charge of the material, since the MAA conferred an acidic point of zero charge (PZC), while the 2-VP conferred a PZC of basic character. Through adsorption isotherms, it was determined  that there is a higher adsorption capacity of the MIPs at acidic pH following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, the MIPs were used to determine the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) understudy in San Luis Potosí, México, wastewater, finding concentrations of 0.642, 0.985, and 0.403 mg L^-1 for DCF, NPX, and IBP, respectively.

Self-Assembled Nanoparticles Based on Block-Copolymers of Poly(2-Deoxy-2-methacrylamido-d-glucose)/Poly(N-Vinyl Succinamic Acid) with Poly(O-Cholesteryl Methacrylate) for Delivery of Hydrophobic Drugs

The self-assembly of amphiphilic block-copolymers is a convenient way to obtain soft nanomaterials of different morphology and scale. In turn, the use of a biomimetic approach makes it possible to synthesize polymers with fragments similar to natural macromolecules but more resistant to biodegradation. In this study, we synthesized the novel bio-inspired amphiphilic block-copolymers consisting of poly(N-methacrylamido-d-glucose) or poly(N-vinyl succinamic acid) as a hydrophilic fragment and poly(O-cholesteryl methacrylate) as a hydrophobic fragment. Block-copolymers were synthesized by radical addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization using dithiobenzoate or trithiocarbonate chain-transfer agent depending on the first monomer, further forming the hydrophilic block. Both homopolymers and copolymers were characterized by ¹H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as thermogravimetric analysis. The obtained copolymers had low dispersity (1.05-1.37) and molecular weights in the range of ~13,000-32,000. The amphiphilic copolymers demonstrated enhanced thermal stability in comparison with hydrophilic precursors. According to dynamic light scattering and nanoparticle tracking analysis, the obtained amphiphilic copolymers were able to self-assemble in aqueous media into nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 200 nm. An investigation of nanoparticles by transmission electron microscopy revealed their spherical shape. The obtained nanoparticles did not demonstrate cytotoxicity against human embryonic kidney (HEK293) and bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells, and they were characterized by a low uptake by macrophages in vitro. Paclitaxel loaded into the developed polymer nanoparticles retained biological activity against lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells (A549).

Thermal Processing of a Degradable Carboxylic Acid-Functionalized Polycarbonate into Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering

Degradable polymers are often desirable for the fabrication of medical implants, but thermal processing of these polymers is a challenge. We describe here how these problems can be addressed by discussing the extrusion of fibers and injection molding of bone pins from a hydrolytically degradable tyrosine-derived polycarbonate. Our initial attempts produced fibers and pins with bubbles, voids, and discoloration, and resulted in the formation of large polymer plugs that seized screws and blocked extruder dies. The material and process parameters that contribute to these issues were investigated by studying the physical and chemical changes that occur during processing. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) scans and thermogravimetric analysis combined with IR (TGA-IR) analysis revealed the role of residual moisture and residual solvents that in conjunction with heat cause degradation and crosslinking as indicated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Rheology and melt-flow index measurements were useful in characterizing the extent of dependence of polymer viscosity on temperature and molecular weight. With these insights, we could process our polymer into fibers and rods by controlling residual moisture, time and temperature, and by adjusting processing parameters in real-time. The systematic approach described here is applicable to other degradable polymers that are difficult to process.

Properties of Poplar Fiber/PLA Composites: Comparison on the Effect of Maleic Anhydride and KH550 Modification of Poplar Fiber

To improve the interfacial adhesion and dispersion of a poplar fiber in a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix, maleic anhydride (MA) and a silane coupling agent (KH550) were used to modify the poplar fiber. The poplar fiber/PLA composites were produced with different modifier contents. The mechanical, thermal, rheological, and physical properties of composites were investigated. A comparison of different natural fiber modifications on the properties of composites was also analyzed. The results showed that both MA and KH550 could improve the interfacial adhesion between the poplar fiber and PLA, resulting in the enhanced mechanical properties of the composite, with 17% and 23% increases of tensile strength for 0.5% MA and 2% KH550, respectively. The thermal properties of the composites were improved at 6% KH550 (a 9% enhancement of T90%) and decreased at 0.5% MA (a 6% decrement of T90%). The wettability of the composites obtained a 11.3% improvement at 4% KH550 and a 5% reduction at 4% MA. Therefore, factors such as mechanical properties, economic efficiency, and durability should be carefully considered when choosing the modifier to improve the property of the composite.

Possibility of removing cadmium pollution from the environment using a newly synthesized material coal fly ash

Coal fly ash (FA) is a solid waste produced in coal combustion. This study focused on the removal of Cd²⁺ from wastewater by a newly synthesized adsorbent material, the low-temperature and sodium hydroxide-modified fly ash (SHM-FA). The SEM and BET analyses of SHM-FA demonstrated that the adsorbent was porous and had a huge specific surface area. The XRF, XRD, FTIR and TGA characterization showed that SHM-FA has an amorphous structure and the Si-O and Al-O in the fly ash dissolved into the solution, which improved the adsorption capacity of Cd. The results indicated that SHM-FA has desired adsorption performance. The adsorption performance was significantly affected by the dosage, starting pH, Cd²⁺ initial concentrations, and temperature, as well as adsorption time. In the optimal conditions, the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of Cd²⁺ by SHM-FA were 95.76% and 31.79 mg g^-1, respectively. The experiment provided clearly explained adsorption kinetics and isotherms. And the results confirmed that the adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model, which means that the adsorption of Cd²⁺ was controlled by SHM-FA through surface reaction and external diffusion process. In addition, the recycling of SHM-FA for reuse after Cd²⁺ adsorption showed high removal efficiency up to six times of use. Therefore, it can be concluded that SHM-FA is a low-cost adsorbent for Cd²⁺ removal from wastewater.

Improving enzymatic hydrolysis of acid-pretreated bamboo residues using amphiphilic surfactant derived from dehydroabietic acid

In this work, amphiphilic surfactant was obtained using dehydroabietic acid from pine rosin and then pre-adsorbed with acid-pretreated bamboo residues (AP-BR) to block the residual lignin adsorption site, which is expected to improve its enzymatic digestibility. Results from cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) indicated amphiphilic surfactant with PEG with polymerization degree of 34 (D-34) aggregated to form worm-like micelles, which improved enzymatic hydrolysis yield of AP-BR from 24.3% to 71.9% by pre-adsorbing with 0.8 g/L. Amphiphilic surfactants pre-adsorbed on AP-BR could reduce hydrophobicity of AP-BR, adsorption affinity and adsorption capacity of lignin for cellulase from 0.51 L/g to 0.48-0.32 L/g, from 2.9 mL/mg to 1.8-1.4 mL/mg, and from 122.3 mg/g to 101.9-21.4 mg/g, respectively. These changed properties showed compelling positive contributions (R² > 0.9) for free enzymes in the supernatants and sequently for final enzymatic hydrolysis yield, which was caused by blocking non-productively hydrophobic adsorption between lignin and cellulase.

Rapid Polymerization of Aromatic Vinyl Monomers to Porous Organic Polymers via Acid Catalysis at Mild Condition

Porous organic polymers (POPs) have enormous applications in various fields and thus have received a lot of research attention in recent decades. Numerous synthetic methods have been developed, but mild synthesis conditions and fast polymerization rate are highly desired. Herein, high porous POPs with high surface areas from aromatic vinyl monomers by using acid catalysis method is reported. The polymerization is ultrafast and could be accomplished even in 5 min at room temperature. Furthermore, the surface area can be tuned by using various acid catalysts and controlling the reaction time. Due to the high surface area, these POPs show promising adsorption of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, respectively. Furthermore, the large π-system of the building block and high surface area of the POPs also make them show potential applications in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution as well as promising catalyst support for metal nanoparticles.

Tuning the Gas Selectivity of Tröger's Base Polyimide Membranes by Using Carboxylic Acid and Tertiary Base Interactions

Polyimide-based materials provide attractive chemistries for the development of gas-separation membranes. Modification of inter- and intra-chain interactions is a route to improve the separation performance. In this work, copolyimides with Tröger's base (TB) monomers are designed and synthesized. In particular, a series of copolyimides is synthesized with different contents of carboxylic acid groups (0-50 wt %) to alter the inter- and intra-chain interactions and enhance the basicity of the TB-polyimides. A detailed thermal and structural analysis is provided for the new copolyimides. Gas permeation data reveal a tunable trend in separation performance with increasing carboxylic acid group content. Importantly, this is one of the few examples of copolyimide membranes materials that show enhanced plasticization resistance to high-pressure gas feeds through physical cross-linking.

Identifying thermal breakdown products of thermoplastics

Polymers processed to produce plastic articles are subjected to temperatures between 150°C and 450°C or more during overheated processing and breakdowns. Heat-based processing of this nature can lead to emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the thermoplastic processing shop. In this study, laboratory experiments, qualitative and quantitative emissions measurement in thermoplastic factories were carried out. The first step was to identify the compounds released depending on the thermoplastic nature, the temperature and the type of process. Then a thermal degradation protocol that can extrapolate the laboratory results to industry scenarios was developed. The influence of three parameters on released thermal breakdown products was studied: the sample preparation methods-manual cutting, ambient, or cold grinding-the heating rate during thermal degradation-5, 10 20, and 50°C/min-and the decomposition method-thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis. Laboratory results were compared to atmospheric measurements taken at 13 companies to validate the protocol and thereby ensure its representativeness of industrial thermal processing. This protocol was applied to most commonly used thermoplastics to determine their thermal breakdown products and their thermal behaviour. Emissions data collected by personal exposure monitoring and sampling at the process emission area show airborne concentrations of detected compounds to be in the range of 0-3 mg/m³ under normal operating conditions. Laser cutting or purging operations generate higher pollution levels in particular formaldehyde which was found in some cases at a concentration above the workplace exposure limit.

Recycling of Cooking Oil Waste into Reactive Polyurethane for Blending with Thermoplastic Polyethylene

Driven by the need of growing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future, this research is started by mixing in-house produced biorenewable polymers (BP) from waste cooking oil with the standard low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) via melt-mixing at low ratios. These mixtures are then compounded via injection molding to produce tensile samples. By using the quality of individual compounds injected, the parameters obtained for all ratios of LDPE/BP were the same with neat LDPE whereas some adjustments were required for the HDPE/BP compounds. The corresponding mechanical behaviors of each ratio were also examined and the results showed that both tensile strength and strain of the LDPE/BP were better than neat LDPE. On the other hand, increasing the BP content in HDPE/BP will increase the toughness of the compound if compared to neat HDPE. Therefore, not only does the presence of BP provide renewable properties, but it also improves the mechanical properties. Moreover, the processing temperature and composition of BP will both influence the quality and mechanical behavior of the product made. Thus, this study may aid any intention on processing these in-house produced polymers by injection molding.

Thermal Degradation and Damping Characteristic of UV Irradiated Biopolymer

Biopolymer made from renewable material is one of the most important groups of polymer because of its versatility in application. In this study, biopolymers based on waste vegetable oil were synthesized and cross-link with commercial polymethane polyphenyl isocyanate (known as BF). The BF was compressed by using hot compression moulding technique at 90°C based on the evaporation of volatile matter, known as compress biopolymer (CB). Treatment with titanium dioxide (TiO2) was found to affect the physical property of compressed biopolymer composite (CBC). The characterization of thermal degradation, activation energy, morphology structure, density, vibration, and damping of CB were determined after UV irradiation exposure. This is to evaluate the photo- and thermal stability of the treated CB or CBC. The vibration and damping characteristic of CBC samples is significantly increased with the increasing of UV irradiation time, lowest thickness, and percentages of TiO2loading at the frequency range of 15–25 Hz due to the potential of the sample to dissipate energy during the oscillation harmonic system. The damping property of CBC was improved markedly upon prolonged exposure to UV irradiation.

Toxicity assessment of silica nanoparticles, functionalised silica nanoparticles, and HASE-grafted silica nanoparticles

Numerous nanomaterials have recently been developed, and numerous practical applications have been found in water treatment, medicine, cosmetics, and engineering. Associative polymers, such as hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) systems are involved in several applications and have been extensively studied due to their ability to form three-dimensional networked gels. However, the data on the potential environmental effects of this polymers are scarce. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of functionalisation of silica nanoparticles, and coupling of functionalised silica nanoparticles to the associative polymer HASE on their toxicity. Thus, acute and chronic toxicity tests included a modified acute test (72 h) using daphnies, algae, and plants as model organisms. Gradient of toxicity varied with the tested organisms. Our results revealed that the functionalised nanoparticules and NP grafted polymer cause a global decrease in toxicity compared to commercial nanoparticule and HASE polymer.
