Phosphorus-Containing Polybenzoxazine Aerogels with Efficient Flame Retardation and Thermal Insulation

Bisphenol A type benzoxazine (Ba) monomers and 10-(2, 5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10- hydrogen-9- oxygen-10- phosphine-10- oxide (DOPO-HQ) were employed to prepare flame retardant and heat insulated polybenzoxazine (PBa) composite aerogels. The successful preparation of PBa composite aerogels was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal degradation behavior and flame-retardant properties of the pristine PBa and PBa composite aerogels were investigated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter. The initial decomposition temperature of PBa decreased slightly after incorporating DOPO-HQ, increasing the char residue amount. The incorporation of 5% DOPO-HQ into PBa led to a decrease of 33.1% at the peak of the heat-release rate and a decrease of 58.7% in the TSP. The flame-retardant mechanism of PBa composite aerogels was investigated by SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA coupled with infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR). The aerogel has advantages such as a simple synthesis procedure, easy amplification, lightweight, low thermal conductivity, and good flame retardancy.

Cardanol and Eugenol Sourced Sustainable Non-halogen Flame Retardants for Enhanced Stability of Renewable Polybenzoxazines

Olefin bonds participate in co-reaction with the benzoxazine functionality of the monomer and are one of the strategies used to affect the crosslink density of a polybenzoxazine network. In general, the double bond incorporation in starting material is usually catalyzed by expensive, rare earth metals affecting the sustainability of the reaction. The natural abundance of feedstocks with inherent double bonds may be a powerful platform for the development of novel greener structures, with potential applications in polymers. Here, we report the design, synthesis, and characterization of a biobased non-halogen flame retardant, consisting of naturally occurring phenols, eugenol (E), and cardanol (C). The presence of a covalently linked phosphazene (P) core allowed the synthesis of hexa-functional flame retardant molecules, abbreviated as EP and CP. The chemical structures of the synthesized EP and CP were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P NMR), and single crystal XRD (only in the case of EP). Their polymerization with cardanol sourced tri-oxazine benzoxazine monomer, C-trisapm, was followed by FTIR, NMR, and DSC studies. The thermal stability and flame retardant properties of the hybrid phosphazene-benzoxazine copolymers was determined by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning, and smoke density analyses. SEM images of the char residues of the polymers with or without the addition of reactive phosphazene molecules confirmed the intumescent flame retarding mechanism. Current work highlights the utility of sustainable origin non-halogen flame retardant (FR) molecules and their utility in polybenzoxazine chemistry.

A Novel Acetylene-Functional/Silicon-Containing Benzoxazine Resin: Preparation, Curing Kinetics and Thermal Properties

Benzoxazine resin has been paid more attention in the fields of aviation, electronics, automobiles and new energy industries because of its excellent comprehensive performance. Further application is limited, however, by shortcomings such as high brittleness and high curing temperature. Furthermore, higher thermal stability is imperiously demanded in special areas. Incorporating both an acetylene group and silicon into the benzoxazine monomer is a promising possible solution to improve the curing processability, thermal properties and toughness of benzoxazine. In this paper, an acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine monomer was prepared by two-step synthesis, and acetylene-functional benzoxazine was also prepared as a comparison. FTIR and ¹H NMR confirmed the molecular structure of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that the initial and peak degradation temperatures of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine were decreased by 21 °C and 18 °C compared with acetylene-functional benzoxazine, respectively. The apparent activation energy of the curing reaction of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine was 83.1 kJ/mol, which was slightly lower than acetylene-functional benzoxazine (84.7 kJ/mol). TGA results showed that the acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine had a higher thermal stability than acetylene-functional benzoxazine. The temperatures of 5% weight loss of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine were 380 °C in nitrogen and 485 °C in air, and the char yield at 1000 °C was 80% in nitrogen and 21% in air, respectively. The results of mechanical properties showed that the impact strength of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine was higher than acetylene-functional benzoxazine by 35.4%. The tensile and flexural strengths of acetylene-functional/silicon-containing benzoxazine were slightly higher than that of acetylene-functional benzoxazine.

Phosphorus-containing polymers from THPS. IV: Synthesis and properties of phosphorus-containing polybenzoxazines as a green route for recycling toxic phosphine (PH3) tail gas

A convenient route to convert the highly toxic phosphine (PH₃) tail gas into high-performance polybenzoxazines was first described in this paper. Two aliphatic polyamines, namely tris(aminomethyl)phosphine oxide and bis(aminomethyl)phenylphosphine oxide, were synthesized from tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS), a green derivative of PH₃ tail gas. And then two novel phosphorus-containing benzoxazine monomers, tris(3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazin-3-yl-methyl)phosphine oxide (TBOz) and benzylbis(3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazin-3-yl-methyl) phosphine oxide (BBOz) were prepared by three-steps procedure. FT-IR and DSC technologies were adopted to study the thermal-initiated polymerization behaviors of two benzoxazine monomers. Thermal properties of these crosslinked polymers were studied by TGA and DMA. The results display that the polybenzoxazines (PTBOz and PBBOz) exhibite good thermal stabilities and high glass transition temperatures. The char yield of polybanzoxazine is high as 47% and indiactes that phosphorus-containing polybenzoxazines show high fire-retardancy. The surface free energies of the PTBOz and PBBOz are 37.1 and 40.4mJm^-2 by Owens two-liquid method. The dielectric properties of the PTBOz and PBBOz remaine near constant in the experimental frequency range.
