Characterization Techniques of Polymer Aging: From Beginning to End

Polymers have been widely applied in various fields in the daily routines and the manufacturing. Despite the awareness of the aggressive and inevitable aging for the polymers, it still remains a challenge to choose an appropriate characterization strategy for evaluating the aging behaviors. The difficulties lie in the fact that the polymer features from the different aging stages require different characterization methods. In this review, we present an overview of the characterization strategies preferable for the initial, accelerated, and late stages during polymer aging. The optimum strategies have been discussed to characterize the generation of radicals, variation of functional groups, substantial chain scission, formation of low-molecular products, and deterioration in the polymers' macro-performances. In view of the advantages and the limitations of these characterization techniques, their utilization in a strategic approach is considered. In addition, we highlight the structure-property relationship for the aged polymers and provide available guidance for lifetime prediction. This review could allow the readers to be knowledgeable of the features for the polymers in the different aging stages and provide access to choose the optimum characterization techniques. We believe that this review will attract the communities dedicated to materials science and chemistry.

Microporous surface containing flower-like molybdenum disulfide submicro-spheres of sulfonated polyimide with antibacterial effect and promoting bone regeneration and osteointegration

Implanted materials with both osteogenic and antibacterial functions are promising for facilitating osteointegration and preventing infection for orthopedic applications. In this work, we synthesized flower-like molybdenum disulfide (fMD) submicro-spheres containing nanosheets, which were incorporated onto the microporous surface of polyimide (PI) via concentrated sulfuric acid, suspending fMD contents of 5 wt% (SPM1) and 10 wt% (SPM2). Compared with sulfonated polyimide (SPM0), both SPM1 and SPM2 with microporous surfaces containing fMD exhibited nano-submicro-microporous surfaces, which improved the surface roughness, wettability, and surface energy. Due to there being more fMD submicro-spheres on the microporous surface, SPM2 revealed a better antibacterial effect than SPM1. In addition, compared with SPM1 and SPM0, SPM2 with more fMD significantly promoted rat bone marrow-derived stromal cell response in vitro. Moreover, SPM2 remarkably enhanced new bone formation and osteointegration in vivo. In summary, the combination of fMD with the microporous surface of SPM2 resulted in a nano-submicro-microporous surface with optimized surface performance, which possessed not only osteogenic bioactivity but also an antibacterial effect. As a bone implant, SPM2 with osteogenic and antibacterial functions may have enormous potential as a bone tissue substitute.

Amino acid derived biopolymers: Recent advances and biomedical applications

Over the past few years, amino acids (AA) have emerged as promising biomaterials for the synthesis of functional polymers. Owing to the diversity of functional groups in amino acids, various polymerization methods may be used to make a wide range of well-defined functional amino-acid/peptide-based optically active polymers with varying polymer lengths, compositions, and designs. When incorporated with chirality and self-assembly, they offer a wide range of applications and are particularly appealing in the field of drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensing. There are several classes of these polymers that include polyamides (PA), polyesters (PE), poly(ester-amide)s (PEA)s, polyurethanes (PU)s, poly(depsipeptide)s (PDP)s, etc. They offer the ability to control functionality, conjugation, crosslinking, stimuli responsiveness, and tuneable mechanical/thermal properties. In this review, we present the recent advancements in the synthesis strategies for obtaining these amino acid-derived bio-macromolecules, their self-assembly properties, and the wealth of prevalent applications.

Preparation and Chiral Applications of Optically Active Polyamides

Chirality is omnipresent in nature and plays vital roles in living organism, and has become a hot research topic across multidisciplinary fields including chemistry, biology, physics, and material science. Meanwhile, polyamides constitute an important class of polymers and have received significant attention owing to their outstanding properties and wide-ranging applications in many areas. Judiciously introducing chirality into polyamides will undoubtedly obtain attractive chiral polymers, namely, optically active polyamides. This review describes the preparation methods of chiral polyamides, including solution polycondensation, interfacial polycondensation, ring-open polymerization, and others; the newly emerging categories of chiral polyamides, i.e., helical polyamides, chiral polyamide-imides, are also presented. The applications of optically active polyamides in chiral research fields including asymmetric catalysis, membrane separation, and enantioselective crystallization are also summarized. In addition, current challenges in chiral polyamides are further presented and future perspectives in the field are proposed.

Effect of Homochirality of Dipeptide to Polymers’ Degradation

As natural polymer materials, proteins are readily biodegradable, interestingly, the synthetic polyamides (PAs) that are based on the same amide bonds (also called peptide bonds in proteins) are barely degradable. Whether did the chirality and configuration of the amino acids play an important role. By using different configuration of amino acids, 4 types of polyamide-imides (PAIs) containing dipeptides of LL, DL, LD, and DD configurations, respectively, were synthesized. It was found that the PAIs based on natural LL configuration of dipeptide structure are much more readily biodegradable than those based on non-natural LD, DL, and DD configuration of dipeptides. It was confirmed that the natural L-configuration of amino acids play a critical role in degradability of proteins. And it also suggested that different type and amount of peptide fragments can be introduced in polymer to create series of polymer materials that can be biodegraded at controllable speed.

The Thermal Properties and Degradability of Chiral Polyester-Imides Based on Several l/d-Amino Acids

Eight kinds of chiral diacid monomers were prepared with amino acids with different side groups or configurations. Polyester-imides (PEIs) were synthesized from these diacid monomers and diphenol monomers through polycondensation reaction, and the performances and properties were compared with the chiral polyamide-imides (PAIs) previously synthesized by our work group. Their thermal properties were analyzed by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA), and it was found that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PEI was mainly affected by the volume of side groups. Their degradability was studied through buffer degradation experiments, and the changes in their water contact angle, molecular weight, structure and appearance during the degradation process were characterized by contact angle tester, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With degradation, the hydrophilicity of PEI was improved, and when amino acids with larger side groups or D configuration were introduced into the backbone of PEI, the degradability decreased.

Dirhodium Coordination Polymers for Asymmetric Cyclopropanation of Diazooxindoles with Olefins: Synthesis and Spectroscopic Analysis

A facile approach is reported for the preparation of dirhodium coordination polymers [Rh₂ (L1)₂ ]_n (Rh₂ -L1) and [Rh₂ (L2)₂ ]_n (Rh₂ -L2; L1=N,N'-(pyromellitoyl)-bis-L-phenylalanine diacid anion, L2=bis-N,N'-(L-phenylalanyl) naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylate diimide) from chiral dicarboxylic acids by ligand exchange. Multiple techniques including FTIR, XPS, and ¹ H→¹³ C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy reveal the formation of the coordination polymers. ¹⁹ F MAS NMR was utilized to investigate the remaining TFA groups in the obtained coordination polymers, and demonstrated near-quantitative ligand exchange. DR-UV-vis and XPS confirm the oxidation state of the Rh center and that the Rh-single bond in the dirhodium node is maintained in the synthesis of Rh₂ -L1 and Rh₂ -L2. Both coordination polymers exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the asymmetric cyclopropanation reaction between styrene and diazooxindole. The catalysts can be easily recycled and reused without significant reduction in their catalytic efficiency.

Study on the Thermal Properties and Enzymatic Degradability of Chiral Polyamide-Imides Films Based on Amino Acids

Six kinds of chiral polyamide-imides (PAI3a–3f) have successfully been synthesized via direct polycondensation. The thermal properties of the materials were evaluated by the gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A thermal test was conducted and showed that the polymers have good thermal stability. The Tg values were affected by the volume effect of the side groups, the internal plasticizing effect and the isolation effect. Polyamide-imides (PAIs) with L configuration showed higher Tg values than PAIs with D configuration. In the enzymatic degradation experiments of PAI films, the results showed that the structure of amino acids have the greatest influence on the degradation performance of PAIs relative to chirality. The PAI films with simple side groups and L configurations were easier to degrade. The degradation rate of natural chiral PAIs were higher than those of non-natural chiral PAIs. This makes it possible to develop polymer materials with specific degradation rates.
