Cyclodextrin-based adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from wastewater: a review

Water is a vital substance that constitutes biological structures and sustains life. However, water pollution is currently among the major environmental challenges and has attracted increasing study attention. How to handle contaminated water now mainly focuses on removing or reducing the pollutants from the wastewater. Cyclodextrin derivatives, possessing external hydrophilic and internal hydrophobic properties, have been recognized as new-generation adsorbents to exert positive effects on water pollution treatment. This article outlines recent contributions of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents on wastewater treatment, highlighting different adsorption mechanisms of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents under different influencing factors. The crosslinked and immobilized cyclodextrin-based adsorbents all displayed outstanding adsorption capacities. Particularly, according to specific pollutants including metal ions, organic chemicals, pesticides, and drugs in wastewater, this article has classified and organized various cyclodextrin-based adsorbents into tables, which could pave an intuitive shortcut for designing and developing efficient cyclodextrin-based adsorbents for targeted wastewater pollutants. Besides, this article specially discusses cost-effectiveness and regeneration performance of current cyclodextrin-based adsorbents. Finally, the challenges and future directions of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents are prospected in this article, which may shed substantial light on practical industrial applications of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents.

Highly efficient preparation of β-CD-based chiral monolithic column by "one-pot" hydroxymethyl polycondensation for enantioseparation in capillary liquid chromatography

A facile strategy for highly efficient fabrication of chiral monolithic column was carried out by the simple "one-pot" hydroxymethyl polycondensation of native β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and urea-formaldehyde (UF). In-situ rapid substitution of native β-CD and efficient polycondensation of β-CD products and UF oligomers was proposed and fulfilled in one pot. The feasibility, mechanism and key parameters of polycondensation reaction were discussed. The data on crosslinking polycondensation and reaction kinetics were further evaluated. Characteristics including the morphologies, permeability and structure stability of the resultant monolithic columns were also studied. Under the optimal conditions, the "one-pot" hydroxymethyl polycondensation was accomplished in an aqueous solution within only 10 mins. Satisfactory stability and repeatability were gained, and good enantioseparation of eight model enantiomers was successfully achieved with the resultant β-CD-based monolith. It was simple and highly efficient, and the organic solvents, special CD derivatives and tediously long-time polymerization reaction were successfully avoided, which might light a new access to rapid preparation of CD-chiral monolith for high-performance enantioseparation.

Novel cyclodextrin-based adsorbents for removing pollutants from wastewater: A critical review

Over the past few decades, cyclodextrin-based adsorbents have drawn worldwide attention as new-generation adsorbents for wastewater treatment due to its extraordinary physicochemical properties. This review outlined the recent development in the synthesis of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents as well as highlighted their applications in the removal of heavy metals, dyes, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and mixed pollutants from water. The cross-linked and immobilized cyclodextrin-based adsorbents exhibited excellent adsorption performances. The removal of dyes and heavy metals were effectively controlled by ion exchanging, mainly depending upon the pH; while the adsorptions of EDCs always occurred in cyclodextrin cavities and pH-independent. An easier separation process between aqueous and adsorbents could be achieved compared to native cyclodextrin, which promoted the application of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents in practical industry. This review could provide an inspiration for the advanced study in the development of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents for high efficiency wastewater treatment.

Molecular Assembly between Weak Crosslinking Cyclodextrin Polymer and trans-Cinnamaldehyde for Corrosion Inhibition towards Mild Steel in 3.5% NaCl Solution: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Constructing molecular assembly between a soluble cyclodextrin polymer (SCDP) and an anticorrosive component is conducive to increasing the availability of a corrosion inhibitor with low molecular polarity in aqueous solution. The SCDP was prepared via the weak crosslinking effect of glutaraldehyde using β-cyclodextrin as the subunit, whose structure was confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (¹H NMR), X-ray diffraction and morphology. An assembly between SCDP (host) and trans-cinnamaldehyde (guest, CA) was constructed, and the intermolecular interactions were disclosed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The corrosion inhibition of SCDP/CA assembly for mild steel in 3.5% NaCl solution was assessed through electrochemical and surface analyses. ¹H NMR results showed that exterior hydroxyls of β-cyclodextrin were the active sites for crosslinking. Hydrogen bonds might be the binding force between SCDP and CA according to FTIR analyses. Electrochemical measurements revealed that SCDP/CA assembly could suppress both cathodic and anodic reactions and enhance the polarization impedance for mild steel in the corrosive medium with a maximum efficiency of 92.2% at 30 °C. Surface analyses showed that CA molecules could be released from the assembly followed by the energy competition mechanism, and solely adsorb on the steel surface in parallel form, which was further evidenced by theoretical modeling.
