Characterization Techniques of Polymer Aging: From Beginning to End

Polymers have been widely applied in various fields in the daily routines and the manufacturing. Despite the awareness of the aggressive and inevitable aging for the polymers, it still remains a challenge to choose an appropriate characterization strategy for evaluating the aging behaviors. The difficulties lie in the fact that the polymer features from the different aging stages require different characterization methods. In this review, we present an overview of the characterization strategies preferable for the initial, accelerated, and late stages during polymer aging. The optimum strategies have been discussed to characterize the generation of radicals, variation of functional groups, substantial chain scission, formation of low-molecular products, and deterioration in the polymers' macro-performances. In view of the advantages and the limitations of these characterization techniques, their utilization in a strategic approach is considered. In addition, we highlight the structure-property relationship for the aged polymers and provide available guidance for lifetime prediction. This review could allow the readers to be knowledgeable of the features for the polymers in the different aging stages and provide access to choose the optimum characterization techniques. We believe that this review will attract the communities dedicated to materials science and chemistry.

Defluorination of Polytetrafluoroethylene Surface by Hydrogen Plasma

Defluorination of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface film is a suitable technique for tailoring its surface properties. The influence of discharge parameters on the surface chemistry was investigated systematically using radio-frequency inductively coupled H₂ plasma sustained in the E- and H-modes at various powers, pressures and treatment times. The surface finish was probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The measurements of water contact angles (WCA) showed increased wettability of the pristine PTFE; however, they did not reveal remarkable modification in the surface chemistry of the samples treated at various discharge parameters. By contrast, the combination of XPS and ToF-SIMS, however, revealed important differences in the surface chemistry between the E- and H-modes. A well-expressed minimum in the fluorine to carbon ratio F/C as low as 0.2 was observed at the treatment time as short as 1 s when plasma was in the H-mode. More gradual surface chemistry was observed when plasma was in the E-mode, and the minimal achievable F/C ratio was about 0.6. The results were explained by the synergistic effects of hydrogen atoms and vacuum ultraviolet radiation.

Frequency-Agile Low-Temperature Solution-Processed Alumina Dielectrics for Inorganic and Organic Electronics Enhanced by Fluoride Doping

The frequency-dependent capacitance of low-temperature solution-processed metal oxide (MO) dielectrics typically yields unreliable and unstable thin-film transistor (TFT) performance metrics, which hinders the development of next-generation roll-to-roll MO electronics and obscures intercomparisons between processing methodologies. Here, capacitance values stable over a wide frequency range are achieved in low-temperature combustion-synthesized aluminum oxide (AlO_x) dielectric films by fluoride doping. For an optimal F incorporation of ∼3.7 atomic % F, the F:AlO_x film capacitance of 166 ± 11 nF/cm² is stable over a 10^-1-10⁴ Hz frequency range, far more stable than that of neat AlO_x films (capacitance = 336 ± 201 nF/cm²) which falls from 781 ± 85 nF/cm² to 104 ± 4 nF/cm² over this frequency range. Importantly, both n-type/inorganic and p-type/organic TFTs exhibit reliable electrical characteristics with minimum hysteresis when employing the F:AlO_x dielectric with ∼3.7 atomic % F. Systematic characterization of film microstructural/compositional and electronic/dielectric properties by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-fight secondary ion mass spectrometry, cross-section transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy reveal that fluoride doping generates AlOF, which strongly reduces the mobile hydrogen content, suppressing polarization mechanisms at low frequencies. Thus, this work provides a broadly applicable anion doping strategy for the realization of high-performance solution-processed metal oxide dielectrics for both organic and inorganic electronics applications.

Design of Chemical Surface Treatment for Laser-Textured Metal Alloys to Achieve Extreme Wetting Behavior

Extreme wetting activities of laser-textured metal alloys have received significant interest due to their superior performance in a wide range of commercial applications and fundamental research studies. Fundamentally, extreme wettability of structured metal alloys depends on both the surface structure and surface chemistry. However, compared with the generation of physical topology on the surface, the role of surface chemistry is less explored for the laser texturing processes of metal alloys to tune the wettability. This work introduces a systematic design approach to modify the surface chemistry of laser textured metal alloys to achieve various extreme wettabilities, including superhydrophobicity/superoleophobicity, superhydrophilicity/superoleophilicity, and coexistence of superoleophobicity and superhydrophilicity. Microscale trenches are first created on the aluminum alloy 6061 surfaces by nanosecond pulse laser surface texturing. Subsequently, the textured surface is immersion-treated in several chemical solutions to attach target functional groups on the surface to achieve the final extreme wettability. Anchoring fluorinated groups (-CF₂- and -CF₃) with very low dispersive and nondispersive surface energy leads to superoleophobicity and superhydrophobicity, resulting in repelling both water and diiodomethane. Attachment of the polar nitrile (-C≡N) group with very high nondispersive and high dispersive surface energy achieves superhydrophilicity and superoleophilicity by drawing water and diiodomethane molecules in the laser-textured capillaries. At last, anchoring fluorinated groups (-CF₂- and -CF₃) and polar sodium carboxylate (-COONa) together leads to very low dispersive and very high nondispersive surface energy components. It results in the coexistence of superoleophobicity and superhydrophilicity, where the treated surface attracts water but repels diiodomethane.

Gas-Phase Fluorination on PLA Improves Cell Adhesion and Spreading

For the regeneration or creation of functional tissues, biodegradable biomaterials including polylactic acid (PLA) are widely preferred. Modifications of the material surface are quite common to improve cell-material interactions and thereby support the biological outcome. Typical approaches include a wet chemical treatment with mostly hazardous substances or a functionalization with plasma. In the present study, gas-phase fluorination was applied to functionalize the PLA surfaces in a simple and one-step process. The biological response including biocompatibility, cell adhesion, cell spreading, and proliferation was analyzed in cell culture experiments with fibroblasts L929 and correlated with changes in the surface properties. Surface characterization methods including surface energy and isoelectric point measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were applied to identify the effects of fluorination on PLA. Gas-phase fluorination causes the formation of C-F bonds in the PLA backbone, which induce a shift to a more hydrophilic and polar surface. The slightly negatively charged surface dramatically improves cell adhesion and spreading of cells on the PLA even with low fluorine content. The results indicate that this improved biological response is protein- but not integrin-dependent. Gas-phase fluorination is therefore an efficient technique to improve cellular response to biomaterial surfaces without losing cytocompatibility.

Semiempirical Peak Fitting Guided by ab Initio Calculations of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Narrow Scans of Chemisorbed, Fluorinated Silanes

Here, we address the issue of finding correct CF₂/CF₃ area ratios from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) C 1s narrow scans of materials containing -CH₂CH₂(CF₂)_nCF₃ (n = 0, 1, 2, ...) moieties. For this work, we modified silicon wafers with four different fluorosilanes. The smallest had a trifluoropropyl (n = 0) moiety, followed by nonafluorohexyl (n = 3), tridecafluoro (n = 5), and finally, heptadecafluoro (n = 7) moieties. Monolayer deposition of the fluorosilanes was confirmed by spectroscopic ellipsometry, wetting, and XPS. Analysis of the trifluoropropyl (n = 0) surface and a sample of polytetrafluoroethylene provided pure-component XPS spectra for -CF₃ and -(CF₂)_n- moieties, respectively. Initial XPS C 1s peak fitting, which follows the literature precedent, was not entirely adequate. To address this issue, six different fitting approaches with increasing complexity and/or input from the Hartree-Fock theory (HF) were considered. Ultimately, we show that by combining HF results with empirical analyses, we obtain more accurate CF₂/CF₃ area ratios while maintaining high-quality fits.

Influence of Water on Tribolayer Growth When Lubricating Steel with a Fluorinated Phosphonium Dicyanamide Ionic Liquid

This work aims to elucidate the role of environmental humidity on the tribological behavior of steel surfaces lubricated with an ionic liquid comprised of a fluorinated phosphonium cation—tributyl-3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluoro-octyl-phosphonium—and a dicyanamide anion (i.e. N(CN)2−). Ball-on-disk tribotests were carried out at room temperature and at various levels of relative humidity (RH). Water was found to be required to promote the formation of a tribofilm over the contact area. The reaction layer exhibited a patchy morphology, which resembles that observed formed with conventional antiwear additives such as ZnDTP. A surface-chemical analysis of the tribofilm indicated that the tribofilm is composed of fluorides, oxides, and phosphates, pointing to a stress-induced degradation of the ions and corrosion of the sliding counterparts, which is enabled by the presence of water at the sliding interface.

How Do We Measure Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) at the Surface of Consumer Products?: Environmental Science and Technology LETTERS

Exposures to poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been linked to metabolic disruption, immunotoxicity and cancer in humans. PFASs are known to be present in diverse consumer products including textiles and food packaging. Here we present a new method for quantifying the atomic percent fluorine (% F) in the surficial 0.01 μm of consumer products using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface of food contact materials and textiles measured in this study contained up to 28% F and 45% F, respectively. PTFE tape was measured to demonstrate XPS accuracy and precision. Depth profiles of fluorine content in consumer products measured using XPS showed highest levels at the upper-most surface in contact with the surrounding environment and a decrease below the surface. PFASs released in methanol extracts and quantified using traditional liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry typically accounted for <1% of the fluorine measured with XPS in consumer products. We conclude that XPS is a useful technique for characterizing PFASs in consumer products because it can precisely quantify the surficial fluorine content of materials. XPS also allows identification of CF₂ and CF₃ groups in materials and can elucidate the depth dependent distribution of fluorine in products.

Mechanisms and Characterization of the Pulsed Electron-Induced Grafting of Styrene onto Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) to Prepare a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane

During the pulsed-electron beam direct grafting of neat styrene onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) substrate, the radiolytically-produced styryl and carbon-centered FEP radicals undergo various desired and undesired competing reactions. In this study, a high-dose rate is used to impede the undesired free radical homopolymerization of styrene and ensure uniform covalent grafting through 125-μm FEP films. This outweighs the enhancement of the undesired crosslinking reactions of carbon-centered FEP radicals and the dimerization of the styryl radicals. The degree of uniform grafting through 125-μm FEP films increases from ≈8%, immediately after pulsed electron irradiation to 33% with the subsequent thermal treatment exceeding the glass transition temperature of FEP of 39°C. On the contrary, steady-state radiolysis using 60Co gamma radiolysis, shows that the undesired homopolymerization of the styrene has become the predominant reaction with a negligible degree of grafting. Time-resolved fast kinetic measurements on pulsed neat styrene show that the styryl radicals undergo fast decays via propagation homopolymerization and termination reactions at an observed reaction rate constant of 5 × 108 l · mol-1 · s-1. The proton conductivity of 25-μm film at 80°C is 0.29 ± 0.01 s cm-1 and 0.007 s cm-1 at relative humidity of 92% and 28%, respectively. The aims of this work are: 1. electrolyte membranes are prepared via grafting initiated by a pulsed electron beam; 2. postirradiation heat-treated membranes are uniformly grafted, ideal for industry; 3. High dose rate is the primary parameter to promote the desired reactions; 4. measurement of kinetics of undesired radiation-induced styrene homopolymerization; and 5. The conductivity of prepared membranes is on par or higher than industry standards.

Protection of normal cells from irradiation bystander effects by silica-flufenamic acid nanoparticles

The development of a myriad of nanoparticles types has opened new possibilities for the diagnostics and treatment of many diseases, especially for cancer. However, most of the researches done so far do not focus on the protection of normal cells surrounding a tumor from irradiation bystander effects that might lead to cancer recurrence. Gap-junctions are known to be involved in this process, which leads to genomic instability of neighboring normal cells, and flufenamic acid (FFA) is included in a new group of gap-junction blockers recently discovered. The present work explores the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles MCM-41 functionalized with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) for anchoring the flufenamic acid for its prolonged and controlled release and protection from radiation bystander effects. MCM-41 and functionalized samples were structurally and chemically characterized with multiple techniques. The biocompatibility of all samples was tested in a live/dead assay performed in cultured MRC-5 and HeLa cells. HeLa cells cultured were exposed to 50 Gy of gamma-rays and the media transferred to fibroblast cells cultured separately. Our results show that MCM-41 and functionalized samples have high biocompatibility with MCR-5 and HeLa cells, and most importantly, the FFA delivered by these NPs was able to halt apoptosis, one of main bystander effects.

Enhancement on the Surface Hydrophobicity and Oleophobicity of an Organosilicon Film by Conformity Deposition and Surface Fluorination Etching

In this work, the surface morphology of a hydrophobic organosilicon film was modified as it was deposited onto a silver seed layer with nanoparticles. The surface hydrophobicity evaluated by the water contact angle was significantly increased from 100° to 128° originating from the surface of the organosilicon film becoming roughened, and was deeply relevant to the Ag seed layer conform deposition. In addition, the organosilicon film became surface oleophobic and the surface hydrophobicity was improved due to the formation of the inactive C-F chemical on the surface after the carbon tetrafluoride glow discharge etching. The surface hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of the organosilicon film could be further optimized with water and oleic contact angles of about 138° and 61°, respectively, after an adequate fluorination etching.

Antifouling Properties of Fluoropolymer Brushes toward Organic Polymers: The Influence of Composition, Thickness, Brush Architecture, and Annealing

Fluoropolymer brushes are widely used to prevent nonspecific adsorption of commercial polymeric or biological materials due to their strongly hydrophobic character. Herein, a series of fluoropolymer brushes with different compositions, thicknesses and molecular architectures was prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Subsequently, the antifouling properties of these fluoropolymer brushes against organic polymers were studied in detail using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements and polystyrene as a representative fouling polymer. Among all of the molecular architectures studied, homopolymerized methacrylate-based fluoropolymer brushes (PMAF17) show the best antifouling properties. Annealing the fluoropolymer brushes improves the antifouling property dramatically due to the reregulated surface composition. These fluoropolymer brushes can be combined with, e.g., micro- and nanostructuring and other advanced materials properties to yield even better long-term antifouling behavior under harsh environments.

Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Fluoropolymer Brushes as Highly Protein-Repellent Coatings

Superhydrophobic surfaces with micro/nanostructures are widely used to prevent nonspecific adsorption of commercial polymeric and/or biological materials. Herein, a self-healing superhydrophobic and highly protein-repellent fluoropolymer brush was grafted onto nanostructured silicon by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Both the superhydrophobicity and antifouling properties (as indicated for isolated protein solutions and for 10% blood plasma) are well repaired upon serious chemical degradation (by e.g. air plasma). This brush still maintains excellent superhydrophobicity and good antifouling properties even after 5 damage-repair cycles, which opens a new door to fabricate long-term antifouling coatings on various substrates that can be used in harsh environments.

Degradation of Albumin on Plasma-Treated Polystyrene by Soft X-ray Exposure

Thin films of human serum albumin (HSA) were immobilized on polystyrene (PS) substrates previously functionalized either with polar or nonpolar functional groups. The functionalization was performed by treatment with cold gaseous plasma created in pure oxygen and tetrafluoromethane (CF₄) plasmas, respectively. Samples were examined with soft X-rays in the photon energy range of 520 to 710 eV in the ANTARES beam line at SOLEIL Synchrotron. NEXAFS spectra of O K-edge and F K-edge were collected at different spots of the sample, and measurements at each spot were repeated many times. A strong degradation of the HSA protein was observed. The weakly irradiated samples exhibited strong absorption at 531.5 eV associated with the O 1s→π*_amide transitions, and a broad non distinctive peak at 540 eV was attributed to the O 1s→σ*_C–O transitions. Both peaks decreased with increasing irradiation time until they were completely replaced by a broad non-distinctive peak at around 532 eV, indicating the destruction of the original protein conformation. The shortage of the amide groups indicated breakage of the peptide bonds.

Thermal and UV Hydrosilylation of Alcohol-Based Bifunctional Alkynes on Si (111) surfaces: How surface radicals influence surface bond formation

Using two different hydrosilylation methods, low temperature thermal and UV initiation, silicon (111) hydrogenated surfaces were functionalized in presence of an OH-terminated alkyne, a CF₃-terminated alkyne and a mixed equimolar ratio of the two alkynes. XPS studies revealed that in the absence of premeditated surface radical through low temperature hydrosilylation, the surface grafting proceeded to form a Si-O-C linkage via nucleophilic reaction through the OH group of the alkyne. This led to a small increase in surface roughness as well as an increase in hydrophobicity and this effect was attributed to the surficial etching of silicon to form nanosize pores (~1–3 nm) by residual water/oxygen as a result of changes to surface polarity from the grafting. Furthermore in the radical-free thermal environment, a mix in equimolar of these two short alkynes can achieve a high contact angle of ~102°, comparable to long alkyl chains grafting reported in literature although surface roughness was relatively mild (rms = ~1 nm). On the other hand, UV initiation on silicon totally reversed the chemical linkages to predominantly Si-C without further compromising the surface roughness, highlighting the importance of surface radicals determining the reactivity of the silicon surface to the selected alkynes.

Fluoro-functionalized polymeric N-heterocyclic carbene-zinc complexes: efficient catalyst for formylation and methylation of amines with CO2 as a C1-building block

A heterogeneous fluoro-functionalized polymeric N-heterocyclic carbene-zinc complex (F-PNHC-Zn) was designed and prepared for the formylation and methylation of N-methylanilines using CO₂ as a C1 building block in the presence of organosilane.

Fluoroethylene carbonate as an important component in electrolyte solutions for high-voltage lithium batteries: role of surface chemistry on the cathode

The effect of fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC) as a cosolvent in alkyl carbonates/LiPF6 on the cycling performance of high-voltage (5 V) cathodes for Li-ion batteries was investigated using electrochemical tools, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). An excellent cycling stability of LiCoPO4/Li, LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Si, and LiCoPO4/Si cells and a reasonable cycling of LiCoPO4/Si cells was achieved by replacing the commonly used cosolvent ethylene carbonate (EC) by FEC in electrolyte solutions for high-voltage Li-ion batteries. The roles of FEC in the improvement of the cycling performance of high-voltage Li-ion cells and of surface chemistry on the cathode are discussed.

Chemical characterization with XPS of the surface of polymer microparticles loaded with morphine

Hydrophilic matrices are a potentially useful option for the development of oral controlled-release formulations. The porous surface of these particles makes it possible to control or modify release of the active principle after administration. As a result, such formulations can be used in liquid controlled-release pharmaceutical formulations. We investigated a method of spontaneous drug encapsulation to prepare ethylcellulose polymer microparticles (since the polymer is synthetic rather than natural the final suspension is called pseudolatex) filled with morphine hydrochloride. Morphine is incorporated to water during the synthesis process and thus it is microencapsulated inside the micelles that give rise to the final microparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a technique that can identify elements in a sample without destroying it, was used for the chemical analysis of the surface of these microspheres. The results demonstrated the complete absence of morphine from the microsphere surface, which was taken as evidence that the drug had been completely encapsulated.
