Abstract
A new type of atropisomerism has recently been discovered in 1,3-benzoxazines, where the intramolecular repulsion between negatively charged oxygen atoms on the imide and the oxazine ring hinders the rotation about the C⁻N bond. The imide group offers a high degree of flexibility for functionalization, allowing a variety of functional groups to be attached, and producing different types of end-caps. In this work, the effects of end-caps on the atropisomerism, thermally activated polymerization of ortho-imide functional benzoxazines, and the associated properties of polybenzoxazines have been systematically investigated. Several end-caps, with different electronic characteristics and rigidities, were designed. ¹H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to obtain structural information, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were also performed to study the thermally activated polymerization process of benzoxazine monomers. We demonstrated that the atropisomerization can be switched on/off by the manipulation of the steric structure of the end-caps, and polymerization behaviors can be well-controlled by the electronic properties of the end-caps. Moreover, a trade-off effect were found between the thermal properties and the rigidity of the end-caps in polybenzoxazines.

Abstract
With unique advantages over inorganic aerogels including higher strengths and compressive moduli, greater toughness, and the ability to be fabricated as a flexible thin film, polymer aerogels have the potential to supplant inorganic aerogels in numerous applications. Among polymer aerogels, polyimide aerogels possess a high degree of high thermal stability as well as outstanding mechanical properties. However, while the onset of thermal decomposition for these materials is typically very high (greater than 500 °C), the polyimide aerogels undergo dramatic thermally induced shrinkage at temperatures well below their glass transition (Tg) or decomposition temperature, which limits their use. In this study, we show that shrinkage is reduced when a bulky moiety is incorporated in the polymer backbone. Twenty different formulations of polyimide aerogels were synthesized from 3,3,'4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4'-oxidianiline (ODA) or a combination of ODA and 9,9'-bis(4-aminophenyl)fluorene (BAPF) and cross-linked with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (BTC) in a statistically designed study. The polymer concentration, n-value, and molar concentration of ODA and BAPF were varied to demonstrate the effect of these variables on certain properties. Samples containing BAPF showed a reduction in shrinkage by as much as 50% after aging at elevated temperatures for 500 h compared to those made with ODA alone.

Abstract
Colorless polyimides with excellent thermal and mechanical properties were developed from 2R,5R,7S,10S-naphthanetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and their properties were systematically compared with those based on 1S,2R,4S,5R-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride.

Abstract
A novel pyridine-containing aromatic diamine monomer, 4-[4-hydroxyphenyl]-2,6-bis[4-(2-aminophenoxy)phenyl]pyridine (p,o-HAPP), was synthesized by a modified Chichibabin reaction of p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde and a substituted acetophenone, 4-(2-nitrophenoxy)acetophenone (p,o-NPAP), followed by a reduction of the resulting dinitro compound 4-[4-hydroxyphenyl]-2,6-bis[4-(2-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]pyridine with Pd/C and hydrazine monohydrate. The aromatic diamine was employed to prepare a series of pyridine-containing polyimides (PIs) by polycondensation with various aromatic dianhydrides in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) via the conventional two-step method. The inherent viscosities of the resulting poly(amic acids) and PIs were in range of 0.62-0.76 and 0.52-0.64 dL/g, respectively. The obtained novel PIs exhibited high solubility in common organic solvents, such as m-Cresol, DMF, N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulfoxide, N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), tetrahydrofuran, and chloroform. Meanwhile, flexible PI films were obtained, which had excellent thermal stability, with the glass transition temperature (T g) of 259.8-323.4 °C and the temperature at 10% weight loss of 485.5-576.4 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The protonated polymer showed UV-vis absorption in the region 200-400 nm and displayed strong fluorescence intensity (470 nm) in NMP solution.
