Collaborative studies of thermo-oxidative degradation of styrene–isoprene diblock copolymer

Effective Interaction between Homo- and Heteropolymer Block of Poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate-r-styrene) Diblock Copolymers

We investigated the segregation behavior of a molten diblock copolymer, poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate-r-styrene) (PBA-b-P(MMA-r-S)), wherein styrene (S) is incorporated as a comonomer in the second block to modulate the effective interaction between homopolymer and a random copolymer block. The temperature dependence of the effective interaction parameter χeff between n-butyl acrylate (BA) and the average monomer of the MMA-r-S random block was evaluated from small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis using the random phase approximation (RPA) approach. The calculated χeff, as a function of the styrene fraction in the random copolymer block, shows a good agreement with the mean-field binary interaction model. This consistency indicates that the effective interaction between component BA and the average monomer of the random copolymer block is smaller than the interactions between pure components (χBA,MMA,χBA,S). The present study suggests that the introduction of a random copolymer block to a block copolymer can effectively reduce the degree of incompatibility of the block copolymer system without altering the constituent species, which may serve as a viable methodology in designing novel thermoplastic elastomers based on triblock or multiblock copolymers.

Abundance correction for mass discrimination effects in polymer mass spectra

RATIONALE

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) is frequently used to analyze homo- and copolymers, i.e. for computing copolymer fingerprints. However, the oligomer abundances are influenced by mass discrimination, i.e. mass- and composition-dependent ionization. We have developed a computational method to correct the abundance bias caused by the mass discrimination.

METHODS

MALDI-TOFMS in combination with computational methods was used to investigate three random copolymers with different ratios of styrene and isoprene. Furthermore, equimolar high- and low-mass styrene and isoprene homopolymers (2500 and 4200 Da) were mixed and also analyzed by MALDI-TOFMS. The abundances of both copolymers and homopolymers were corrected for mass discrimination effects with our new method.

RESULTS

The novel computational method was integrated into the existing COCONUT software. The method was demonstrated using the measured styrene and isoprene co- and homopolymers. First, the method was applied to homopolymer spectra. Subsequently, the copolymer fingerprint was computed from the copolymer MALDI mass spectra and the correcting function applied. The changes in the composition are plausible, indicating that correction of copolymer abundances was reasonable.

CONCLUSIONS

Our computational method may help to avoid erroneous conclusions when analyzing copolymer MS spectra. The software is freely available and represents a step towards comprehensive computational support in polymer science. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Diamino Telechelic Polybutadienes for Solventless Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) Triblock Copolymer Formation

High molecular weight, high functionality diamino telechelic polybutadienes (TPBs) were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of 1,5-cyclooctadiene (COD) in the presence of a chain transfer agent, 1,8-dicyano-4-octene, followed by lithium aluminum hydride reduction. Melt coupling of diamino TPB with anhydride-terminated polystyrene (PS-anh) resulted in the formation of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymers; ca. 80% maximum conversion of PS-anh was achieved within 30 seconds. The results from SAXS, TEM, and rheological measurements of the coupling products confirmed the formation of SBS triblock copolymers having lamellar morphology. A fluororesent-labeled PS-anh was used to study the coupling kinetics by diluting the reactants by the addition of non-functional PS.
